Government to setup ethanol plants in provincial centres

12

The Government will next year start constructing ethanol plants in provincial centres for blending fuel, as a measure to reduce the cost of petroleum in the country.

Minister of Energy Peter Kapala said this today in Kasenengwa District when he paid a courtesy call on Chief Saili and Senior Induna Kapichila ahead of commissioning the 7 million litre capacity Fuel Depot.

The Minister told the traditional rulers that the Ministry of Energy has plans to start producing cheaper blended fuel using ethanol.

Eng. Kapala stated that the blended fuel will use ethanol from cassava, although the wish was to use maize but that is not an option because it could threaten the national food security.

He said the blending of fuel is a strategy to reduce the fuel cost in the economy, which will reduce the cost of doing business and also facilitate the creation of more jobs for the youths.

Speaking earlier, Chief Saili, who represented Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people, said it is hoped that more capital projects will be established in the province to create jobs for young people.

The traditional ruler appealed to the Minister of Energy to ensure that the US$40 million depot that was being commissioned today will create jobs for local people and not those from outside.

The chief also thanked Government for establishing the fuel depots and hoped that the infrastructure which will act as a strategic fuel storage facility will lead to the reduction of fuel in the province.

The Minister of Energy, Peter Kapala, will later this afternoon commission the US$40 million Chipata fuel depot which is located in the Kasenengwa District.

A Presidential Perspective On Mumbi Phiri’s Incarceration

35

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. In his commentary when he featured on a Hot FM radio program yesterday, President Hakainde Hichilema stated that the reason Mumbi Phiri was arrested and charged with murder is because she issued a statement that she was present when the alleged victim; Lawrence Banda was shot. And also that she said Lawrence Banda was shot because he had tried to grab a hand bag.

2. Well, if what the President said is the only evidence which the State has against Mumbi Phiri, then why was she arrested and charged with murder? Because at the most, her alleged statement makes her a witness to the alleged crime, and not an accessory or a perpetrator.

3. President Hakainde Hichilema went on to say that Mumbi Phiri should have been arrested way before the UPND ascended to power, because she had admitted to being present when Lawrence Banda was shot. Is the President now telling us that merely being present when an alleged murder is taking place makes one a murderer too?

4. Additionally, you could see the amount of disdain in the President’s eyes when he spoke about Mumbi Phiri, which shows that he personally hates Mumbi Phiri with a passion. Suffice to mention that such apparent deep-rooted hatred by a person who wields so much power as a Republican President, against an ordinary citizen, is extremely dangerous. The President has so many avenues available to inflict pain and suffering on Mumbi Phiri, in furtherance of his hate for her.

5. Evidently, President Hakainde Hichilema decided to use his powers to cloth Mumbi Phiri with a murder charge based on very flimsy grounds, going by the evidence adduced by the President himself yesterday on Hot FM radio. It appears that the President then went on to directly or indirectly ensure that Mumbi Phiri is not taken for trial any time soon, so that she can suffer in prison as much as possible, before the courts acquit her.

6. Indeed, if the only evidence which the State has against Mumbi Phiri is what President Hakainde Hichilema stated on radio yesterday, then there is no doubt that when Mumbi Phiri is finally taken for trial, she will be acquitted. Or in order to save face, the State will enter a nolle prosequi against her. However, even when that happens, Hakainde Hichilema will still be a happy man because he would have already inflicted adequate extra-judicial punishment on Mumbi Phiri, by incarcerating her without trial for close to a year.

7. It is a shame that instead of using the power that was bestowed on him by the people of Zambia on 12th August 2021, to improve the people’s welfare, President Hakainde Hichilema is using his presidential powers to fight petty battles against his perceived enemies. Instead of pursuing development, he is pursuing vengeance. But for how long will the people of Zambia feed on Hakainde’s persecution of his opponents, given that there is a lot of hunger and growing anger among the masses due to lack of employment and increasing cost of living? Only time will tell.

President Hichilema counsels Ambassadors, High Commissioners

5

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged Ambassadors and High Commissioners assigned to foreign missions to ensure that they create warm bilateral relations with the respective countries where they are serving to foster investments for the country.

President Hichilema says warm relations with other countries is important for the county’s development.

The President was speaking when he swore-in Zambia’s Ambassador to Turkey, William Sikazwe, Zambia’s Ambassador to Tanzania, Mathews Jere and Zambia’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Derick Livune at State House yesterday.

President Hichilema urged the newly appointed Ambassador to Turkey Lieutenant General William Sikazwe to ensure that Zambia becomes part of the solution to the tension in neighbouring Ukraine, which has brought disruptions to the world.

“As an embassy and as an economic diplomat, the three of you, none of you is a pure political diplomat. Relationships and warm relations with these countries are very important. Carry your diaries and check the things that need to be resolved and do what we agreed to do,” he said.

The Head of State further said Turkey is an important and strategic partner for Zambia hence the reason to strengthen the existing relationship.

“Turkey is important to Zambia, because of its geographic position for example it is a route to the European markets for Agriculture products, construction, and infrastructure,” President Hichilema said.

And President Hichilema has further tasked newly appointed Ambassador to Tanzania, Mathews Jere to ensure that concerns over the congestion at the Nakonde Border Post are resolved among other issues.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema urged newly sworn-in Zambia’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Derick Livune to use the rich history between the two countries to enhance bilateral relations.

New Dawn administration keen on economic development – President Hichilema

5

President Hakainde Hichilema says his government has prioritized economic development in order to improve the welfare of the Zambian people.

President Hichilema explained that his administration will ensure all available resources are channeled to more important projects as a way of ramping up the economy.

Speaking when he featured on the Hot FM red hot breakfast show special interview, President Hichilema noted that the country has experienced a collapsed economy that dropped from 6 percent per year to the negatives.

He assured that government is on the road to recovering the economy through implementation of strategic programmes in a more transparent way, thereby projecting a 3.5 percent economic growth per year.

He noted that the mismanagement of resources will be a thing of the past as he expects business to be done systematically to achieve the vision of the Zambian people.

President Hichilema assured that government will also increase funding to communities so that people in rural areas can also benefit from public services, citing all health facilities to have maternity wings and availability of water.

“Responsibility leadership means that we do the rights to the damages of the country in a sustainable way so that others can build on it, we have brought the economy to stabilize by setting our priorities clear,” President Hichilema stated.

The Head of State also dispelled the allegations that government engaged China on the debt issue at a later stage than other creditors.

President Hichilema explained that his administration needed to understand how much the country owed the creditors and balance with what’s in records so that the restructuring process could be strategic.

He noted that the government’s objective was to be strategic and assured citizens to look out for a better deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Head of state also touched on the issue of abolishing by-elections saying that it is a waste of resources that can be used for more important projects.

He also indicated that people in the public service are free to retire early if they wish, disclosing that he has even signed some letters to allow those who applied for early retirement because it is their right.

The Head of State further promised to address the concerns raised by callers which included issues of employment, transparency and the economy.

As his administration clocks one year, President Hichilema urged Zambians to rate his governance in comparison with the party manifesto noting it is the only way citizens will differentiate unlike listening to information without proper basis.

Continued Detention of Mumbi Phiri without Trial is unacceptable-HH

40

President Hakainde Hichilema has described the continued detention of former Patriotic Front-PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi phiri without trial as unacceptable and has suggested judicial reforms to address such injustices.

The head of state however disclosed that Mrs Phiri’s arrest was pending before the change of government last year and has accused the police command then, of playing double standards by not following the law on the matter while disclosing that he too, has been asking questions around her prolonged detention without seeing a judge.

Speaking at State House during a special edition of the Red Hot Breakfast Show this morning, President Hichilema wondered why she was not arrested sooner based on the video in which she insinuated that she was at the crime scene and that her failure to report the crime was in itself a crime as well.

The President says there is need to unblock the justice delivery, offload the back log of cases and to ensure each high court at least has a resident judge as opposed to currently where there are no resident judges in many places.

And the President has reiterated the need for constitutional reforms to stop by elections and ensure parliamentary tenure of office runs for a full 5 years, disclosed that cabinet has approved changes to the public order act which is currently under consultations and that the Constituency Development Fund-CDF act will be amended to speak to current needs with enhanced CDF.

Meanwhile, the President has advised those summoned by the joint investigative team to explain the source of their wealth, to answer queries saying he too was answerable several times when in opposition once during which the death of Nsama Nsama and Joseph Kaunda occurred.

FAWEZA demands girl-child re-entry policy turned into law

0

THE Forum for African Women Educationalists Zambia chapter (FAWEZA) says it wants the girl child re-entry policy to be turned into law.

FAWEZA executive director, Costern Kanchele  observes that the girl child re-entry policy which was introduced in 1997 has no force on its own to compel guardians and parents to take back their siblings resulting to low levels of girl child retention in most learning institution in the country.

ZANIS reports that Mr Kanchele disclosed this at a media engagement meeting attended by several journalists drawn from different media houses which was officially opened by Southern province information officer, Charles Mangwato.

“The re-entry policy is not law so it is not effective as it is not mandatory. So we want to come up with a framework for it to be turned into a statutory instrument (SI) so that it is law that can penalize those who would not comply to it.

“ We are a consortium of civil society organizations and we have knocked on the doors of the parliamentary committee on education and they are excited about it,” Kanchele says.

FAWEZA in partnership with FAWE-Africa, SAT and Plan International with financial support from the Dutch government has embarked on a five year advocacy project (2021-25) dubbed : ‘Break Free’ whose objective is to reduce child marriages and teenage pregnancies in the country.

It cites inadequate awareness on gender based violence and sexual reproductive human rights (SRHR), high cost of education, poverty, traditional norms, the impact of COVID-19 and the ineffective implementation of laws and policies, particularly the re-entry policy as drivers that perpetuate child marriages and teenage pregnancies.

The project has so far managed to retrieve 190 girls through its established grassroots advocacy structures in the selected five schools per each district of Kalomo, Kazungula and Monze of Southern province.

In the last four years over 15,000 teenage pregnancies and child marriages under the age of 18 have been reported, the media engagement meeting learnt.

The Break Free project interventions are also being implemented in Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi and Rwanda.

It seeks to see a reduction of child marriages and teenage pregnancies and to contribute to an improved implementation retention mechanism of the girl child policy in the selected 15 schools of the three districts of Southern province.

Infernos at Kapiri and Ndola markets acts of sabotage – Nanjuwa

8

Central Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, says it is highly suspicious that there could be an

inferno at Kapiri Mposhi and Ndola markets, almost simultaneously.

Mr. Nanjuwa has since directed the security wings to thoroughly investigate the fire incidents that destroyed goods worth thousands of

Kwacha at Riverside market in Kapiri and Ndola on the Copperbelt.

Speaking when he called on Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner Francis Hasalama today market an act he described as an act of sabotage.

“It is highly suspicious that there could be fires at a market in Kapiri and Ndola at the same time. We must satisfy ourselves by having thorough investigations to erase any doubt,” Mr. Nanjuwa said.

The minister said culprits behind the fire, they must be brought to book adding that it is not easy for people to just lose their source of Livelihoods.

On Monday fire swept through several shops destroying cereals and other goods valued at K615,000.

Earlier, Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner, Francis Hasalama, said there could be foul play though no truth has been established.

Mr. Hasalama said the assumption is based  on the fact that where the fire started from there was no source that could ignite the fire.

Project to protect children launched in Itezhitezhi

0

Government has launched the ‘Aim Youth Power Project (AYP)’ in Itezhi Tezhi, with the goal of strengthening the social accountability capacities of youth-led and youth-focused non-governmental organizations.

The project, which is being implemented in six provinces and is being funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft Fur International Zusammernarbeit GmbH (GIZ), will work to increase civic engagement as well as transparency and accountability of government actions and policies in Zambia.

Speaking at the launch, Project Coordinator Chika Chilekwa stated that the project will empower Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to hold duty bearers accountable for youth-related services.

“We are having meetings here in Itezhi Tezhi with gate keepers, parents and guardians because there is a huge problem of child marriages and high school drop outs” Chilekwa said.

Restless Development is educating parents and traditional leaders on the importance of ensuring that children attend school.

The  meetings serve as a platform for duty bearers to encourage communities to hold them accountable for promises made.

Itezhi Tezhi Member of Parliament (MP)  Twaambo Mutinta  ,who graced the launch said government attaches importance to child protection by ensuring that all children‘s rights are protected and promoted.

Mr Mutinta said government was providing social cash transfers through the social welfare department in order to reduce intergenerational poverty.

“The department also facilitates rights based and all-inclusive policies to promote the best interest of every child in the country by equipping juveniles justice system to effectively and efficiently provide quality justice services.” Mr. Mutinta said.

He said that the government was implementing the Keeping Girls in School (KGS) program to promote girls’ education, as well as providing free education to all children to ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive an education.

The project will strengthen the local CSO’s ability to hold leaders accountable, support child protection issues, and eliminate all forms of Gender Based Violence.

The Lawmaker stated that the project has attracted participation from various government departments such as the Victim Support Unit (VSU), CSOs and Social Welfare .

During the launch events in Nachisenga and Nakabangwe, young people expressed varying perspectives on how they will meaningfully participate in the project’s implementation.

Ruth Mangango, a Nachisenga resident, has expressed gratitude for the Itezhi Tezhi project.

She said that the issue of child marriages in Itezhi Tezhi was extremely serious, with children as young as 12 being forced to participate in initiation ceremonies.

The Ministry of Community Development and Social services, Itezhi Tezhi Candle Light Community Response Organisation (ICCRO), Soul Aid, and Restless Development Zambia will carry out the project.

UPND suspects Foul play in the fire incident at Kapalala Market

9

The governing United Party for National Development (UPND) Deputy National Youth Chairman Trevor Mwiinde says his youth wing suspects foul play in the fire incident at Kapalala Market in Ndola.

Over 1000 traders have been affected by the fire which hit the wholesale area for tomatoes, cassava, charcoal and some makeshift restaurants.

Police and Ndola City Council say the cause of the fire at Kapalala Market in Masala Township, Ndola is not yet known.

After visiting Kapalala Market, Mr. Mwiinde said law enforcement agencies should investigate the cause of fire at Kapalala and bring the culprits to book.

Mr. Sialunga said UPND youths are concerned over the fire incident at Kapalala and Kapiri Mposhi Markets this week.

The UPND youth leader has told Radio Icengelo News in Ndola that fire incidents are sending many traders into suffering.

“As UPND youths we are very disturbed by the suffering the people of Kabushi Constituency are going through. We thought Kabushi Constituency was the bedroom for our colleagues PF not too long ago but look at how people are suffering. We are here to look at challenges the people of Kabushi Constituency are going through including the burning of Kapalala Market here in Masala, Ndola. It is sad to see the market burnt. It is sad for our mothers and many youths affected by the fire here at Kapalala Market. I feel the best way as a Zambian who believes in making our country prosper after seeing that they have started burning markets again like they gassed us, I want the government to look into this fire issue here at Kapalala and another fire reported at Kapiri Mposhi Market. They started by burning a market in Kapiri and now they have extended to Kapalala. We are not happy as people who want progress in the lives of people,” Mr. Mwiinde said.

“We don’t like to see people complaining or suffering as a result of this sabotage as the New Dawn government. The New Dawn government has a vision of fostering justice among all people through poverty reduction and education. Our mothers were buying books and pencils for their children through those businesses destroyed by fire at Kapalala Market. We know that many of the retirees are also here at the market selling things like salaula in order to survive. It is very unfortunate that some people have gone back to the old tactics of the PF of burning markets and disturbing the people. We as UPND youths are sworn to make sure that we live among the Zambians and deliver to their expectations,” he said.

“Our campaign message and our leader President Hakainde Hichilema, who is the Republican President, has been very clear that he doesn’t condone barbaric acts. To those involved in the burning of markets this is a shame and disappointing act if at all they are found wanting by law enforcement agencies. I don’t care which political party they are coming from, I won’t feel pity for them. Whatever has come to your mind, how can you burn a market? As UPND youths we are not happy and we will work with the government to put politics aside from markets because trading is a source of living for many people,” Mr. Mwiinde added.

Kapalala Market was again gutted by fire in August, 2017.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwiinde has saluted a team of ministers that has visited Kapalala Market to console the aggrieved traders.

The team included Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe, Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe, Green Economy Minister Collins Nzovu, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo, Community Development Minister Dorin Mwamba, Small and Medium enterprises Minister Elias Mubanga and Lusaka Province Minister Shelly Mulyata.

“And we don’t want anyone to politicise this issue. We thank ministers for taking their time to console the traders at Kapalala Market. The ministers did well to check on how the people at Kapalala are suffering after the fire incident. This is very disheartening and counterproductive,” Mr. Mwiinde said.

Police must stop the mischief over the robbery at ECL’s residence

29

Patriotic Front (PF) Lusaka Provincial Chairman Christopher Shakafuswa notes with concern the statement issued by the Zambia Police claiming that two Party cadres broke into the house of Former President’s Edgar Lungu and stole two Television sets.

Mr Shakafuswe bemoaned that the statement by the Police Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba to be very careless, unsatisfactory and quite unprofessional.

“For the record, we want to categorically state the fact that the purported suspects that the police claim to have arrested are NOT members of the Patriotic Front as we have checked and verified our Party registers and we can confirm that there are no such names in our records,” he noted

He added that it is shocking that the Police could be dragging the name of the Party in the mud when they could have simply reached out to the Party Secretariat to verify whether or not the said suspects are indeed members of the Patriotic Front.

Mr Shakafuswa explained that the Party wants to make it clear that there are no PF cadres who are found at President Lungu’s residence as the former President has retired from active politics and he has nothing to do with party cadres, and members of the Patriotic Front go to the Party Secretariat and not the residence of President Lungu thus, the Police should desist from putting the name of President Lungu into public odium.

He stated that the Police must pursue suspected criminals for their alleged crimes and not for their purported or perceived political affiliation, which is an unprofessional conduct and such utterances that have made the Zambia Police to be ranked among the worst in the World.

“No wonder up to now they have failed to track and bring to book the criminals that abducted the named mobile money operator,” he said

“How could they issue a statement attaching criminal suspects to an organisation they don’t belong to when a simple check with the Party Secretariat could have revealed the truth about the identity of the said suspects?” he stated

Mr Shakafuswa has since challenged the police to be professional and not to be used as political tools for propaganda purposes, as this is the reason why people are losing trust and confidence in the Police because of such unwarranted statements and unethical conduct by some women and women in uniform.

“The other day, the country was treated to an embarrassing circus at Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) were DEC officers scampered in all directions for their dear lives, when a suspect brandished a gun in their own offices, how can such people who fail to even put a simple metal detector or a simple scanner be trusted with investigative duties of a nation? Shame!” he cited

Mr Shakafuswa alluded that this excuse of a government should instead be exonerating itself and explaining to the Zambians why it is failing to provide security for a Former Head of State.

“We are worried and concerned about the safety and privacy of the Former President and we demand that the Government accord him the kind of security and respect he deserves as a Former Head of State,” Mr Shakafuswa said

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police Lemmy Kajoba updated the nation yesterday that on Saturday 13th August, 2022, Police managed to trace one known Patriotic Front (PF) Party Cadre Angel Chipasha of Lusaka’s Chipata Compound who was linked to the theft of two Televisions sets stolen from Former President Edgar Lungu’s resident on 9th August, 2022.

Mr Kajoba noted that the Police raided Angel Chipasha’s home but drew a blank because he had shifted during the day to an unknown location, however, Police managed to trace him in Ten Miles where he had relocated.

He explained that on Sunday 14th August, 2022, Police Officers raided his new place and successfully managed to arrest the suspect and, in the process, recovered one of the stolen Television and upon interrogation, he alleged that a colleague of his Emmanuel Bwalya, commonly known as Emma also a PF Cadre, had the other Television set.

“The two suspects are known to have been frequenting the residence of the Former Head of State, Police is aware that Emmanuel Bwalya is currently on the Copperbelt where he is suspected to have sold the other Television Set,” he said

Mr Kajoba has since appealed to members of the public who could have bought the Television or may have been approached to purchase the stolen Television to report to the nearest Police Station, as failure to do so may lead to the arrest and prosecution of any person who will be found in Possession of the Stolen Television.

He noted that the Police have since launched a manhunt for Emmanuel Bwalya so that he is brought to book and possibly recover the remaining Television Set.

“Investigations are on-going and more details will be availed to members of the public accordingly,” he stated

What Should Students Learn on University Campuses?

3

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D. Emeritus Professor of Sociology

Millions of students are flocking to colleges and universities now for Fall term amidst tumultuous politics on college campuses and in the United States. What should the students learn on campus that might help the nation resolve this political crisis? This has reignited memories of the tumultuous student days I experienced as an undergraduate at University of Zambia in Southern Africa in 1972. This was fifty years ago. That’s so ancient. We are now in a new millennium with the internet. Most readers probably anticipate my revisiting the over used cliché of an older person recalling to their child; “when I was your age, I walked to school every day for 5 kms barefoot in sizzling October heat.” Most young people today roll their eyes in derision when they hear this cliché. This is not that kind of story.

When I finally arrived at University of Zambia as a wide-eyed freshman, I was primed to learn. I was consumed with curiosity. During my Form V year at Chizongwe Secondary or High School in 1971, the University of Zambia had been closed briefly due to student demonstrations and clashes with the police over the then racist apartheid policy in South Africa. I wanted to know about science, philosophy, politics, and most of all the exciting but mysterious world of ideas. Why was there racism? Why was there European colonialism in Africa? What was the Vietnam War? Why did America dominate the world? Why did men desire sex more than women? What was Marxism? What was capitalism?

Then there were the students and faculty of the University of Zambia. During my freshman orientation, the upperclassman or senior student who was showing us around campus stopped and said: “You are in university ….knowledge and ideas are neutral here. You can challenge existing ideas so long as you can create a convincing argument. Your professor is a mere mediator of this knowledge.” My jaw almost dropped to the ground. You mean “teachers” and let alone Professors or lecturers were not Gods? My lecturers or professors who were from Australia, USA, Britain, France, Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, India and many countries of the world later reiterated this same significant message during the subsequent freshman lectures. The idea stuck with me throughout my academic career.

The notion that ideas “are neutral and you could think of persuasive well developed research and arguments to express different perspective” flourished on campus and was taken at heart by most students. We may not have known it at the time but those were the academic and social heydays among the University of Zambia students.

This passionate curiosity created an atmosphere in which we students felt empowered as what went on in class reverberated in student life most especially in student newspapers and campus politics as well as student participation in national politics. Before the reader creates the image of student zombies copying ideas from their Sociology, Psychology, Economics, or Political Science 101 essays and passively regurgitating and slapping them on to a student newspaper, I must hasten to add that some of the most creative use of ideas and command of the English language appeared in the student newspapers. Student written plays in the Chikwakwa Student theater society, often incorporated ideas from campus social life and politics. The student newspaper’s English, tone, and news, never read like that of the national mainstream newspapers which we students read every day. Our student newspapers had hard core campus news, editorials and lots of often provocative and also down right humorous frivolity. The student newspapers always sold out within minutes on campus. They were so popular. The mere memory of this gives me goosebumps. What did this all have to do with the serious objective of getting my college degree?

My suspicion is that all of this probably never added an iota to the improvement of student course grades or what income students earned after graduation. When I was a freshman there was only one student paper. When I was a Junior, a group of friends and I decided to start a second student newspaper. There were four student newspapers by the time I graduated; ranging from radical to more moderate. All of this extracurricular activity created excitement, gave students a feeling of empowerment, active involvement, and being part of a unique and special community. I remember and cherish memories from those experiences more than some of the Cs, Bs and the few As I got in my coursework.

CEC raise concern over non payments from KCM and Mopani for Power Supplied

27

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has bemoaned the prolonged non-settlement of debts by Konkola Copper Mines and Mopani Copper Mines for power supplied to the Mining Companies.

CEC is currently owed a total of US$177.2million as at August 18, 2022and the debt continues accumulating as the power utility continues supplying power to the mining company.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe yesterday, CEC Chief Projects Officer Vincent Nyirenda said the debt has constrained the working capital of the power utility.

Mr. Nyirenda said the huge accumulated debt means that the company is operating with less working capital.

“The KCM debt has not been recovered and the matter is now before the court, there is an arbitration process that CEC has stated in order to recover the money owed by KCM and that process has not been concluded,” he said.

And on Mopani, another Mine that owes CEC arears for power supplied, Mr. Nyirenda said progress has been made to recover the money through a payment plan that has been agreed.

He noted that the recovery of the debt from the two mining companies will help put the power utility back on a comfortable working capital.

In 2020, when government took over the running of Konkola Copper Mines following the liquidation of the mine, the company begun abrogating the power supply agreement it had with CEC by refusing to pay bills for the power supplied until it escalated to huge sums.

And Mopani Copper Mine started defaulting on the payment conditions after Glencoe, the immediate past owners of the Mopani left the mine under unfavourable financial conditions.

And Mr. Nyirenda has complained of continued vandalism on its infrastructure.

He said the increased vandalism on its infrastructure is one of the key challenges the company has been grappling with over the past few years.

He however said the company has engaged the police in fighting the scourge which has resulted in apprehension of some culprits.

Vice President dates Copperbelt to meet marketeers at Kapalala market

6

Vice President, Mutale Nalumango will tomorrow be in Ndola where she is expected to meet marketeers at Kapalala market whose goads and property were gutted in an inferno.

Over 1,200 marketeers have lost their goods and merchandise in the fire that swept through the entire market yesterday.

ZANIS reports that Copperbelt Province Minister, Elisha Matambo told the marketeers today that the Vice President will interact and give guidelines on how government intends to handle their matter.

Mr. Matambo said Mrs. Nalumango will land at Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport in Ndola at 09 hours, before proceeding to Kapalala market in Masala Township.

Meanwhile, Mr Matambo said government has decided to reallocate the marketeers to the newly constructed Kapalala market on Saturday this week and preparation have since advanced.

He added that government is taking measures aimed at preventing the reoccurrence of the same problem adding that permanent structures will be constructed.

Earlier traders’ representative, Teddy Mulenga said the traders have resolved to remain at Kapalala and have no plans to be moved to the new market.

Mr. Mulenga appealed for improved permanent structures at the gutted market.
