Government expresses concern with the number of youths not accessing tertiary education

5

The government say it is concerned that most youths in the region are unable to further their education after grade 12.

Northwestern province Permanent Secretary, Grandson Katambi points out that lack of pre-requisite skills and knowledge are the main hindrances most youths especially from rural areas face from accessing tertiary education.

This why the government has partnered with ICOF Africa colleges, Seminary and Universities in order to give vulnerable youths free access to education and training under the community scholarship programme, Colonel Katambi said.

Speaking during the official opening of the first residential school for 300 students from across the province in Solwezi yesterday, Col. Katambi said the government wants to give an opportunity to all youths to have education regardless of their social status as they are the backbone for socio-economic development.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the youth of this country because the education being imparted today will not only benefit this province but the entire nation,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary stated that there is need for all stakeholders to find ways of urgently building capacity in young people and preparing them for the future.

Speaking earlier, ICOF Africa Vice President Charles Mwape said the free education programme being offered by ICOF Africa is not political but a fulfillment of the new dawn government’s vision of offering free education to all.

Professor Mwape said ICOF Africa is grateful to the government for the opportunity to impart knowledge in the over 27 000 youths that will be trained in the next five years.

And Elizabeth Ngoma , an ICOF Africa student of Public Administration, has thanked the government for the free scholarships that have been given to vulnerable youths to enable them have access to education.

Ms Ngoma said the opportunity has lifted the financial burdens on most families who had no means of sending their children for tertiary education because of vulnerability.

About 503 vulnerable students are expected to benefit from the free scholarships being given by ICOF Africa in partnership with the ministry of Youth, Sports and Art under the community scholarship programme.

Government commits to stabilize the country’s fiscal environment to enable the financial markets provide impetus for growth

1

Government has re-affirmed its commitment to stabilize the country’s fiscal environment to enable the financial markets provide impetus for growth.

Ministry of Finance and National Planning Permanent Secretary for Budget and Economic Affairs Mukuli Chikuba said government is focusing on growing the economy through key sectors in order to increase Foreign Direct Investment into the Country.

Speaking when he featured the Quarterly economic review discussion hosted by the Zambia National Commercial Bank, Mr. Chikuba said the Country’s economy is projected to grow by 3 to 4 percent in the medium term and that this should improve as Foreign Direct Investment continues to come into the Country.

“Part of the policy trajectory or the components that make up the policy trajectory from where we are going forward is in the first year to attain macro-economic stability and stabilize the fiscal environment so that in the medium to long term the financial markets can provide the needed impetuous for growth.

“We are stabilizing the economy because we want investments to come in and improve further our macroeconomic projection going forward. We expect the economy to grow by 3-4 percent in the medium term, “ he said.

FDI is coming back into the country will further these projections.

The Permanent Secretary pointed out that what has happened in the mining sector with First Quantum Ltd announcing its investment of $1.5 billion is as

a result of the stability that government has established.

Mr. Chikuba emphatically stated that for this sector to grow, there was need for FDI to come in.

And speaking during the same discussion, Bank of Zambia Head of Economics Jonathan Chipili said the positive shifts in the micro- economic environment of the country, the cost of borrowing is expected to be lowered.

Mr Chipili expressed optimism that this will trigger a positive impact on economic growth.

“With the shift in the macro-economic environment, borrowing costs should begin to come down. Despite remaining sticky, there is a bit of curvature in lending rates, pointing downwards.

“ With this, borrowers should begin to see the benefits, ” he said

Meanwhile, ZANACO Head Economic Research Patrick Chileshe said the Kwacha’s strong performance is keeping prices of imported consumer goods stable.

Mr Chileshe said that the trend is at the same time muting production costs adding that positivity in the economy is helping to counter capital flight risk from rising external interest rates.

“The exchange rate is the most important factor in Zambia’s inflation dynamics. Zambia’s consumer basket is heavily tilted towards imported consumer items, which are usually priced in US Dollar so when the currency is appreciating, the direct effects are that the kwacha price of imported items start going down, although sometimes there is inertia by traders who maintain the same prices,” he said.

The quarterly economic review discussion panelists consisted of Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary in charge of Budget and Economic Affairs, Mukuli Chikuba, Bank of Zambia ( BOZ ) Head of Economics Dr. Jonathan Chipili, ZANACO Chief Risk Officer Mutisunge Zulu and ZANACO Head Economic Research, Dr Patrick Chileshe.

This is according to a press statement released by ZANACO Head Communications Verona Nkolola.

The HH Kasompe Demolition Disaster: Lunshi Pamaafi Tasela

23

By Kapya Kaoma

Unlike most of you, I grew up deep in the village and the natural world taught me life lessons. So when I heard some UPND cadres support the demolition of over 500 houses in Kasompe, Chingola, I made sense of the adage, lunshi pamafi tasela (house flies always gather around feces).

Don’t get me wrong. Zambia has been heaven on earth since President HH took power. Is the Kwacha not 16 to a US dollar? Only fools believe that the economy is biting. Even then, one wonders if we are living in the same country. That’s not my fault. We are all entitled to our own pockets. If you can’t afford what I could, bad for you. As for now, shout aloud and I will shout back–HH is making Zambia heaven on earth!

Back to over 500 demolished houses in Kasompe. Who doesn’t know Chingola was once the cleanest town in Zambia? Yes! We were proud of it until PF thugs came along. They ruined it. But maybe I am too harsh to blame it on Lungu. It began with the shortest man to rule Zambia. I am short too and I don’t mean short people are short mannered. But FTJ was just that–he destroyed Chingola and gave houses away like toilet paper. It is he who caused the housing crisis in the once peaceful and cleanest jewel of Zambia. Retirees didn’t pay their land dues and we watched helplessly as street after street crumbled and bins disappeared before our eyes. House flies and rats took over the streets, and then piles of trash started sharing our streets with us. It wasn’t long before pot holes became dams and all our pride disappeared. To read those words, “Welcome to Chingola, the Cleanest Town In Zambia,” after Kasompe turn-off, made us put our tails between our legs!

But we didn’t stop marrying and giving birth. The spirit of Chingola went on. The Brave Rangers we supported, but we never won anything. As the population grew, we needed more land, nonetheless where could we get it? Across the mining areas new structures were born–of course they were illegal. But they were better than nothing. People started building wherever they could find space. Health hazards these atrocious structures became, but who cared as long as one had a place to call home. It was the MMD to blame I guess–Chiluba to be specific. So when President HH praised his legacy, I wondered if he knew the damage he caused to Chingola.

To mining kids, Kasompe was like a ghetto. But not until Chiluba changed things–mining bosses who retired didn’t leave Kabundi or the famous numbered Streets of Nchanga South–they were proudly married to Nchanga South Hospital and their Golf course. So new ones had to start investing outside the city–something that led to new areas being established. Kasompe became marketable and illegal land deals took off. Unsuspecting citizens were sold plots that they developed–only to discover they were not legitimate. The Great Bally fix it–erased over 500 houses down!

Simple questions. Did President HH ask the value of the airstrip and ask the owners of those houses to negotiate with the original owner to buy back the land? Did the President ask the city to consider alternative land for the airstrip which owners of those houses would have purchased? Did the President consider compensating the original owner using the CDF as opposed to causing unnecessary pain on citizens? There is no doubt the decision was legally justified; but it was not ethical. In short, there’s a difference between what is legal and what is ethical. A leader must carry his people in his heart as opposed to abandon them when they need him most. President HH can claim whatever he wants, but he betrayed the people of Kasompe! This is highly disturbing and despicable.

I know his files are brainwashed to justify whatever he does without question. This is because balunshi (flies) gather around the feces left behind by someone–they don’t follow the one who dumped them there. So it is in politics. When politicians make fecal decisions like this one, cadres defend such inhumane policies with senseless slogans. And as soon as the old feces dry up, and the fresh ones come, flies jump ship–it is the circle of Zambian politics. Balunshi bamuMMD became balunshi bamuPF. As we speak, balunshi bamuPF are joining UPND.

Ala lunshi pamafi tasela!

We are supposed to review the curriculum every after 5 years-BETUZ

1

The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) commends the New Dawn Administration for being keen on setting up new policies in the education sector that will bring about changes in the school curriculum.

BETUZ Secretary General Henry Sinkala noted that the efforts being put in place by the New Dawn Government must be appreciated because the last time there was a new curriculum review was in 2013 which was later implemented in 2014.

“By our standards as a country as a sector we are supposed to review the curriculum every after five (5) years, so I would safely say that it’s been long overdue,” he said

Mr Sinkala added that the impact of the Free Education Policy has been very positive and enormous and every Zambian has appreciated the New Dawn Government policy on free education visa-vi trying to enhance quality and accessible education by employing over 30,000 teachers.

He explained that before inviting stakeholders in the education sector to make their submissions on the expectations to be included in the new curriculum, there’s need to conduct a revision of the current curriculum to ascertain what worked best and what didn’t work, as this will help to build on what should be included in the new curriculum going forward.

“The Free Education Policy is one of the tangent features that the new curriculum is already embarking on,” he said

Mr Sinkala said that after the review of the old curriculum, divergent views from various stakeholders can be submitted.

He stated that the sexual reproductive system is one of the components which for the past three (3) years has been inconsistency especially with the divergent views from the church and other organisations who felt left out in terms of consultation during the introduction of the sexual health reproductive system in schools.

“I think this would be the best time for every stakeholder to make contributions on what type of curriculum they would want to see being introduced in our public schools,” he said

Mr Sinkala mention that the appointment of a Director for Curriculum at the Ministry of Education is the first in the structure of the Ministry and the formulation of this position will see to it that there are consultative reviews with the Director which will help in forming a curriculum that meets the aspirations of all Zambians.

Mr Sinkala explained that the failures of the curriculum that was introduced in 2014 where that, end users, the teachers where not retained in the new curriculum, because there were not enough but there was a need for teachers to be retrained in line with the new curriculum so that they could handle subjects in a manner that befits the dictate of the new curriculum but unfortunately that was not done.

“For the end users who are the teachers, they never knew what to do as they started learning the new curriculum at the same time with the pupils which was a challenge,” Mr Sinkala explained

Mr Sinkala stated that before the new curriculum is introduced by the New Dawn Administration, it will be paramount that the end users’ teachers are tamed by providing them with adequate information which will enable them to teach in a manner that would provide or help achieve the provision of offering quality education in schools.

Mr Sinkala cited the need for end users (teachers) to be fully engaged by making them part and parcel of the people who will be consulted rather than just being in the receiving end while being sidelined when conducting curriculum revisions.

“It’s important that teachers across the country are identified and are part of these revisions because these are some of the gaps that had been noted when new curriculum was introduced in 2014,” he cited

He alluded that despite being in an era of ICT and technology in this 21st Century, the major challenge of implementing ICT especially in the rural area is the lack of electricity as 70% of the country is in the rural with a number of schools without access to electricity as they are not connected to the national power grid.

Mr Sinkala has since called on the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) to work in close collaboration with BETUZ in ensuring that schools in the rural areas could have access and connection to the national power grid.

“With REA coming on board, we will see a number of our schools being connected to our national power grid and with that done I think the implementation of ICT will be smooth sailing like it is in other countries,” he said

He added that in terms of the funding, the funding levels where very low for primary schools that they could not afford things such as computers and other fundamentals, but with the new funding system put in place by the New Dawn Government where schools are funded quarterly, funding wouldn’t be a big issue as long as the Government continues on this good trajectory of funding the schools as stipulated.

“Lack of funding was a challenge because the new curriculum demanded that certain materials are procured and we didn’t have enough funds especially in Primary schools,” he said

Zesco United Battle to Exorcise Red Arrows Ghost

0

Zesco United coach Mumamba  Numba says they are determined to put a smile on the faces of their supporters this Saturday when they host bogey side and defending FAZ Super League champions Red Arrows in a Week 2 fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Arrows collected back-to-back league win over Zesco in the 2021/2022 season that saw the latter surrender the title on their way to finishing first and second respectively.

The humiliation didn’t end there for Zesco, as Arrows went on to beat them 3-0 on August 1 in a pre-season tournament in Lusaka.

“For us, we are looking at Red Arrows with wounds that we are still nursing. They beat us last season in the league both home and away and during the four-team tournament so this is an opportunity for us to put a smile on the faces of our supporters,” Numba said.

Both teams head into their second game of the season after starting the campaign with a point each.

Arrows were held 0-0 at home by promoted Napsa Stars while Zesco blew away a one-nil first half lead away to Prison Leopards where they finished 1-1 in Kabwe.

Both sides are playing continental football this season with Arrows participating in the CAF Champions League where they will play Angolan club CD Primeiro Agosto.

Zesco is in the CAF Confederation Cup where they are on bye from September’s preliminary stage.

They will enter the competition in the second where they await the winner of the Royal AM of South Africa versus Eswatini club Mbabane Highlanders first round tie.

Christian Churches Monitoring Group to monitor the By- Elections

The Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) has declared that it will monitor the by elections in Luangwa, Kabushi and Kwacha slated for 15 September, 2022.

Candidates filed their nomination papers on Thursday ahead of the Luangwa Council Chairperson by-election and the Parliamentary by elections in Kabushi Constituency in Ndola and Kitwe’s Kwacha Constituency.

In a statement, CCMG – Steering Committee Chairperson Bishop Andrew Mwenda said the group has deployed Long-Term Observers who will monitor and report on the pre-election environment including, voter education activities by stakeholders, adherence to the Electoral Code of Conduct by political parties or candidates and media coverage of political candidate campaign activities.

Bishop Mwenda said CCMG wants proper enforcement of the Electoral Code of Conduct by both the Electoral Commission of Zambia and law enforcement agencies.

“CCMG will monitor the forthcoming by-elections by deploying Long-Term Observers who will monitor and report on the pre-election environment including, voter education activities by stakeholders, adherence to the Electoral Code of Conduct by political parties or candidates and media coverage of political party or candidate campaign activities. For Election Day, CCMG will recruit, train and deploy Election Day monitors to monitor adherence to Election Day procedures including opening and setup, voting, and counting procedures, and the official announcement of results. CCMG has several expectations of stakeholders as follows: 1. Monitors or Observers Accreditation and Access: CCMG expects the ECZ to provide sufficient kits and time for accreditation of monitors, observers and party agents, and the media,” Bishop Mwenda said.

Bishop Mwenda said CCMG is also proposing that Ministers being appointed as campaign managers or members of campaign teams by the ruling party should take unpaid leave from their official government duties.

“Appointment of Ministers as Campaign Managers: While the ruling party may be free to appoint its members who are Ministers as campaign managers or members of campaign teams, CCMG expects that where Ministers are appointed as campaign managers or members of campaign teams, they should take unpaid leave from their official government duties. This will ensure that they are not drawing a salary for the time they spent serving their party and not the people of Zambia. Further we expect that where such leave has been sought or given, a public record be kept and a public notice be issued for avoidance of doubt and in the interest of transparency,” Bishop Mwenda said.

Bishop Mwenda added:” Civil Servants and Government Agencies: Civil servants are required to be politically neutral and not take part in partisan politics. CCMG expects that all civil servants will remain politically neutral and not engage in partisan politics. Further, we expect that government agencies such as the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) will suspend all its activities of service to the Zambian people in arrears where by-elections are taking place. DMMU was in the past seen to be active in areas where by-elections were being held and, in some cases, its senior staff were spotted at political party events. Campaign Schedules: It is CCMG’s expectation that all political parties, and specifically the UPND, will factor into their campaign schedules any foreseen and planned campaign activity by the party President who is the Head of State and the Vice President to avoid instances where the Head of State’s campaign activities outside of the agreed to campaign schedule affect other political party campaign activities. We expect that all political parties and candidates for the three (3) by elections will work with the ECZ and the Police to develop campaign schedules and will adhere to the same in order to facilitate an equitable and even campaign environment.”

Bishop Mwenda further called for more citizen participation in the by-elections.

He added that CCMG expects the media, particularly public media, to provide equal coverage to all candidates in the coming by-elections as provided for in the Electoral Process Act.

“CCMG recognizes the role that the media plays in shaping opinion of society and thus expects that the media will remain politically neutral and balanced in their programing related to the by-elections. CCMG expects the media, particularly public media, to provide equal coverage to all candidates in the coming by-elections as provided for in the Electoral Process Act. Additionally, CCMG expects the media to provide voter information to enhance citizens’ participation in the coming by-elections. In conclusion, we would like to encourage eligible citizens to turn out in numbers and exercise their right to vote. CCMG will continue to play its active role in monitoring electoral processes and elections including the Luangwa Council Chairperson, Kabushi parliamentary, and Kwacha parliamentary by-elections and provide information through statements and its social media platforms,” Bishop Mwenda stated.

Bishop Mwenda signed the statement alongside CCMG Steering Committee Spokesperson Fr. Alex Muyebe of JCTR, Fr. Emmanuel Chikoya, the Steering Committee Member from Council of Churches in Zambia and CCMG Steering Committee Member Fr. Francis Mukosa, the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) Secretary General.

Five candidates have successfully filed in their nominations for the forthcoming Kwacha Constituency

Five (5) candidates have successfully filed in their nominations for the forthcoming Kwacha Constituency by-election in Kitwe on the Copperbelt.

The successful candidates include Jaya Ashani, the only female candidate from the Economic Freedom Fighters Party.

Ms. Ashani, a former PF Member, pledged to empower women of Kwacha through agriculture

She is a Zambian of Asian origin.

Prof Oliver Silumbe filed his nomination for the Kwacha Parliamentary by election on the Leadership Movement Party ticket and described the process as challenging

Prof. Silumbe of the Leadership Movement finally successfully filed his nominations for the Kwacha Parliamentary by-election in Kitwe after a delay of more than five hours.

Prof. Silumbe had earlier in the morning turned up at the nomination center without certified copies of the National Registration Card.

He managed to complete the nomination process late in the afternoon after bringing certified copies of the National Registration Card.

Independent candidate Lawrence Kasonde was the last to file his nomination for the race to the National Assembly.

Former university student’s union leader Shadreck Mumba is the candidate for the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia Party for the Kwacha Parliamentary by-election.

Mr. Mumba expressed his confidence immediately after filing his nomination papers for the by-election.

The ruling UPND candidate Able Mulenga also filed his nomination paper successfully before Kwacha Constituency Brian Mbula.

Meanwhile, National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Nicholas Chali, who allegedly forged his adoption certificate, did not show up for nomination after ECZ gave him a chance to produce the original document earlier.

Mr. Mbula closed the nomination center at exactly 15:00 hours.

The Returning Officer had earlier rejected the nomination of Joseph Malanji of Patriotic Front citing article 72 (4) of the constitution which states that any candidate who causes a vacancy in the National Assembly was not eligible to stand in a by-election.

Mr. Malanji has since challenged the ECZ’s decision to reject his nomination in court.

SANAC disappointed with LAZ statement on Lusambo and Malanji eligibility

23

The Southern Africa Network Against Corruption (SANAC) has expressed displeasure over the statement issued by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) on the rejection of the nomination papers for Joe Malanji and Bowman Lusambo citing that it lacked legal backing as the Association failed to refer to any Constitutional provisions in their submission.

The Southern Africa Network Against Corruption Executive Director Gregory Chifire noted that it is worrying when LAZ starts to make pedestrian statements such as the one on the illegibility of Mr Lusambo and Mr Malanji when there mandate according section 4 of the Law Association of Zambia Act Chapter 31 is to promote constitutionalism, rights of citizens and the rule of law, therefore, LAZ must never veer off from its sacred mandate as it stands to lose its credibility.

“Such statements can fuel anarchy,” Mr Chifire noted

Mr Chifire stated that LAZ needs to put itself in order and there is need for urgent reforms so as to retain the place of integrity and good standing the Association has enjoyed in the eyes of the general public.

“We humbly ask senior lawyers to help in this regard,” he said

He highlighted that it is disappointing that LAZ in their submission failed to cite any Constitutional provision when it is a matter of common sense that issues concerning the Constitution must be debated using the Constitution.

Mr Chifire added that Zambia has a constitution, which is a Supreme Law of the Land and any other law that contravenes with the Constitution is null and void according to (Article 1[1]) of the Constitution.

He said that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was actually being charitable by informing the Patriotic Front well in advance that it will not accept the nominations of Mr Malanji to recontest in the Kwacha Constituency seat and Mr Lusambo to recontest on the Kabushi Constituency seat in the upcoming Parliamentary By-Elections slated for the 15th of September, 2022, in order for the party to consider finding replacements in the twilight.

He mentioned that the Patriotic Front just wanted to attract sympathy because if they were serious, they could have replaced their candidates.

“As it stands, they have lost those two seats, thanks to their arrogance that was backed by ill advice from LAZ,” Mr Chifire mentioned

Mr Chifire explained that the next time LAZ debates on the Constitution, they should be ready to make reference to the same because whatever a lawyer submits that has no authority, amounts to nothing regardless of volume of submission.

“What LAZ submitted on the matter at hand is nothing, it has no legal backing thus it is as good as a tavern discussion,” he said

He said that it is an open secret that LAZ has had few internal challenges such as issues involving its members that were being used during the Patriotic Front (PF) regime as conduits for money laundering and the Association has failed to deliberate on that issue.

Mr Chifire added that there is an allegation in the public domain that Equitas Legal Practitioners, the firm where the current LAZ President, Lungisani Zulu is a partner, was used for payments in excess of K5 million that raised a red flag.

He further added that in a situation as one involving the firm for the President of LAZ, Zambians would be inclined to conclude that in making the statement on the issue of Mr Malanji and Mr Lusambo, Mr Zulu’s judgment was influenced by the relationship his firm enjoyed with the former Ruling Party.

“It is only natural that as human beings we seldom take positions that seemingly disadvantage our paymasters, current or former,” Mr Chifire said

Children living with Autism, have unlimited potential – Mutinta

7

First Lady Mutinta Hichilema says children living with Autism, just like any other child, have unlimited potential that must be fully developed and allowed to blossom.

Mrs. Hichilema noted that children living with autism need specialized developmental healing and nurturing techniques, specifically structures designed to lessen their physical limitations in order to make it easier for them to perform regular daily functions as well as fully utilize their abilities.

Mrs. Hichilema was speaking in Kabwe district during the ground breaking ceremony for the Caleb Centre for children living with autism.

The First Lady arrived in Kabwe to officiate at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a centre in Luasanse ward for children living with Autism.

Provincial Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe led other government and UPND officials to welcome  Mrs  Hichilema  ahead of her official engagements.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition.

Other causes are not yet known. Scientists believe there are multiple causes of ASD that act together to change the most common ways people develop.

People still have much to learn about these causes and how they impact people with ASD.

People with ASD may behave, communicate, interact, and learn in ways that are different from most other people.

There is often nothing about how they look that sets them apart from other people.

The abilities of people with ASD can vary significantly. For example, some people with ASD may have advanced conversation skills whereas others may be nonverbal.

Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others can work and live with little to no support.

Three Children die after unknown gadget they were playing with exploded

6

Three children of Kasasa village in Mpulungu district have died in unclear circumstances while two adults are nursing serious injuries in hospital.

The three children aged nine, five and two years old met their fate while playing with an unknown gadget which exploded killing them instantly and injuring the other two persons.

Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao, who rushed to the scene and later visited the victims at the hospital, confirmed the incident to ZANIS which happened yesterday.

Mr. Mbao, who is also Mpulungu area Member of Parliament, described the incident as regrettable.

He said investigations to establish the cause of the explosion have been instituted.

And Mpulungu District Commissioner, Geard Sikazwe, who accompanied the minister, identified the deceased as Promise Simusokwe aged two, Philip Simbeye aged nine and five year old Richard Sinkala.

Mr. Sikazwe also named the casualties as Everlyn Nachilima aged 44 and Ronald Simutowe aged 24 years, a census enumerator who was on duty.

Meanwhile, Laban Musonda, a nurse who was found attending to the victims, informed the minister that the two sustained multiple fractures but are in a stable condition.

Government has put in place fundamentals to revive the Zambia’s economy-Matambo

2

Copperbelt Province Minister, Elisha Matambo has said that the government has put in place several macroeconomic fundamentals to revive the country’s economy.

Mr Matambo said the new administration has put in place a tax administration system that has given a positive investment signal that Zambia is ready for business in the mining sector.

Mr Matambo said this when Bank of Zambia Governor, Denny Kalyalya called on him at his office in Ndola yesterday.

He stated that strides have also been made to revive the economy of the Copperbelt stating that government is working with various stakeholders to revamp the industrial area in Ndola to create more jobs for the local people.

Mr Matambo said despite some industries not being operational, Copperbelt remains the engine of the country’s economy.

He commended Dr. Kalyalya and his team for ensuring that government’s agenda to revive the economy is attained.

Mr. Matambo cited the single digit inflation rate attainment, stability of the Kwacha and the friendly business environment as key macro-economic indicators currently prevailing.

And Dr. Kalyalya said he is pleased to note that a lot of economic activities are happening on the Copperbelt.

Dr. Kalyalya said an increase in economic activities is an indication of economic growth.

He is accompanied to the Copperbelt by his deputy operations, Francis Chipimo.

Zambia expects to raise US$92 million from tobacco sales

4

Zambia expects to increase its tobacco harvest by a quarter and generate $92 million from leaf sales at the close of the marketing season in September.

By August 12 2022, the country’s tobacco growers had sold 35 million kg of leaf through the approval sales floors against projected sales of 33 million kg.

Flue-cured Virginia accounted for 27 million kg and burley represented 6 million kg of the leaf sales.

Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo Phiri told the International Tobacco Growers Association’s Africa Congress in Lusaka that the sector had performed well during the season despite various headwinds coupled with low investment.
