President Lungu should quickly heal and join hands with President Hichilema in fostering unity

25

By Dr Nevers Mumba

I have listened to the statement made by 6th Republican President Mr. Edgar Lungu at the funeral of our fallen 4th Republican President, President Rupiah Bwezani Banda which brought into debate the word, “HYPOCRISY.” Last night, I could only post the definition of hypocrisy on my face book to give myself time to fully appreciate the meaning and put it into context.

His statement has largely been understood or seen from two contexts.

That as Zambians, we are generally hypocritical and that there has been a growing trend of hypocricy in the country where people especially leaders, are only appreciated when they die, rather than while they are still with us.

That President Hichilema is a hypocrite who has been allegedly saying good things publicly and doing bad things behind the scenes as related to how the former PF leaders are being treated.

Regardless of what President Lungu could have meant, we believe this statement has stirred up a lot of debate, some healthy and some proving rather unfortunate.

Healthy in the sense that, it has laid bare a growing concern in which we, as a people never appreciate our leaders while they are alive. We saw this with our Gabon Soccer Heroes, both the class of 1993 Heroes as well as the Class of 2012 Heroes. We saw it with President Kaunda, with President Chiluba to a greater extent, perhaps, we also saw it with Late President Mwanawasa and now, President Banda. On this score, I think we must self-introspect as individual citizens and improve as a nation and accord some semblance of respect to our Leaders, especially after they leave office.

On the other hand, the statement has also caused a negative stir in that the event used to make such a statement was inappropriate. It was a presidential funeral at which words used by leaders must contribute to strengthening national unity and comforting the nation. In addition, in the pursuit of reconciliation and national unity, President Lungu must never underestimate the damage his regime inflicted on Zambians. The damage to democracy. Damage to the economy. Damage to the bond that has held the 72 tribes together. Damage to Zambia’s international image. We are of the view that such intentional damage done to a nation must become prosecutable in future.

Thirdly, President Lungu and PF must never underestimate the grace and restraint that President Hichilema has had to exercise in handling former PF leaders.

To President Hichilema, we applaud you for being magnanimous in the manner in which you have gracefully handled power, and the people that manhandled you. It is you, who reached out to president Lungu to attend the funeral for RB. This gesture has unfortunately been rewarded with the biting accusation of hypocrisy. But in our quest for national unity, we urge you not to take offense but to continue with efforts to unite the nation, including embracing President Lungu.

To President Lungu, it is not too late. The loss of President Banda and just last year, President Kenneth Kaunda has naturally presented to you, an opportunity to step into a role that is larger than partisan divisions, I urge you, sir, to seek God’s strength and face the Zambian people. Ask them to forgive you for any pain your administration could have caused them knowingly or unknowingly. Do not listen to those naysayers that want to continue using your name to advance their own PF agenda, your role is now Zambian. Most assuredly, Both God and the people of Zambia shall forgive you. We know that if you can quickly heal and move on to step into your new role, you can be a huge blessing and an instrument to Join hands with President Hichilema to foster peace, unity and development for our beloved nation.

To continue to complain that you are being mistreated currently does not sit well with most Zambians. Most Zambians believe you should be held accountable.

HELP US TO HEAL AND LET US FOSTER NATIONAL UNITY TOGETHER.

Red Arrows Open Eight Point Lead

Red Arrows on Saturday opened an eight point lead at the summit of the FAZ Super League after a Lusaka derby win over Lusaka Dynamos.

Arrows beat Dynamos 1-0 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Ricky Banda scored the games only goal to see Arrows move to 55 points with seven games left to play.

But Arrows kept their healthy lead due to two factors.

The first one, second placed Zesco United are inactive because they have eight players away on national team duty; seven lone with Zambia and one with South Sudan.

Secondly, third placed Green Eagles could only manage a 0-0 away draw at Kansanshi Dynamos in Solwezi.

That draw saw Eagles join Zesco on 47 points but with an inferior goal difference.

Meanwhile, fourth placed Nkana and fifth positioned Green Buffaloes meet on Sunday at Edwin Emboela Stadium in Lusaka.

Nkana and Buffaloes head into the match on 40 and 38 points respectively.

Kariba water level increase-ZRA

8

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has recorded an increase in the Lake Kariba water level from 478.35m as at January 1, 2022 to 478 52m as at March 18, 2022.

In a statement made available to ZANIS, the increase of water level at the beginning of January 2022 was mainly due to sustained rainfall activity in the Kariba Lower Catchment but that the lake receded due to a reduction in rainfall activity.

ZRA Public Relations Manager Selusiwe Sibanda disclosed that as of March 14 2022, the Lake was at 3.03 meters above the minimum operating level of 475.50m translating into 13.66 billion cubic meters of stored usable water that is available for power generation.

He however noted that last year in March, the Lake level was higher at 481.44m with 27.62 of stored usable water.

The Authority has since assured that due the upper catchment rainfall activity, the lake would start increasing likely reaching a peak of 480.30m above the minimum operating level

The statement further indicated that the Authority has maintained water allocation for power generation at Kariba Dam for 2022 at forty-five billion cubic meters of water allocated to ZESCO Limited and Zimbabwe Power Company for their respective power generation operations.

“The Authority has continued and will continue to monitor and analyse the available hydrological data and hereby wishes to assure the public that a significant lake level rise is anticipated by mid-April 2022. This will result in an increase in stored usable water for power generation at Kariba,” read part of the statement.

Zambians urged to emulate late Mulundika-Hichilema

Zambia’s Freedom Fighter, Christine Mulundika has been put to rest at Leopards Memorial Park in Lusaka today.

Mulundika, who died last week on Sunday March 13,2022 aged 80, was buried at the Leopards Memorial Park, after a church service at St Ignatius in Lusaka.

Vice President Mutale Nalumango represented President Hakainde Hichilema in leading other mourners to witness the burial, who included Cabinet ministers and other government officials.

President Hakainde Hichilema in a speech read on his behalf by Vice President Mutale Nalumango said the former freedom fighter will not just be mourned but celebrated because of the exemplary life she lived.

President Hichilema said Late Mulundika spent a large part of her youth actively supporting the independence struggle of mother Zambia.

“We lost two eminent persons whom we will forever remain indebted to for their great contributions and sacrifice to the independence struggle of our country,” he said.

President Hichilema further noted that in the post independent Zambia, Mulundika was among the few women who served in high leadership positions in UNIP until 1991.

He added that the late Mulundika’s career in the public service began in the late 1960’s and was among the first few Indigenous women to be trained as a Teacher at Minga Teachers training College.

The President also explained that late Mulundika was an ardent freedom fighter that exhibited her commitment to the welfare of other people.

He said Mulundika ventured into Unionism, which was predominantly a preserve of the male folk at that time.

“Late Mulundika will go down in the history of our country as an architect of the emancipation of women in the workplace,” he said.

He urged Zambians to emulate the late Mulundika’s patriotism and contributions to the development of the country and honour her legacy.

The President said the legacy left by Mulundika will continue to inspire the current crop of leaders as she promoted peace and unity.

And giving a vote of thanks, Chieftainess Nkomesha urged upcoming politicians to serve the interest of the people like what late Mulundika fought for.

She praised late Mulundika for fighting for the liberation of Zambia to gain independence.

ZANIS reports that the late Mulundika is well known for the 1995 Supreme Court judgement dubbed: ‘Mulundika and seven others on the Public Order Act (POA)’. In this case, the appellants challenged the constitutionality of certain provisions of the POA Chapter 104 of the Laws of Zambia (now Chapter 113), especially section 5 (4).

Pilato releases “Ku Kopala”

Zambian rapper and renowned activist PilAto has returned on the music scene with visuals for titled “Ku Kopala” produced by produced Kiss B. Ku Kopala is a single from the LIFELESS project under the BERTHA CHALLENGE FELLOWSHIP.

Ku Kopala- Translated as “On the Copperbelt” is a song that shares some unpopular realities faced by families on the Copperbelt. The protection of groundwater resources is of great importance in many semi-arid and sub-tropical environments. The Copperbelt of Zambia is one such environment and due to the high proportion of tailings impoundments, residue heaps, high-density informal settlements and extensive sulfidic ore deposits in the region, its groundwater resources are under threat of anthropogenic or geogenic pollution. Air and water pollution are among the most significant environmental problems facing the communities living in and around the copper mining areas in Zambia. It is a complex issue, which cuts across the environmental, social, economic, and political dimensions. Despite recent investments and technological improvements to capture sulphur dioxide emissions and minimize the discharge of mine effluents into natural streams, there are still numerous reports that cite air and water pollution problems.

Asanovic:Chipolopolo Did Its Best

3

Chipolopolo coach Aljosa Asanovic says the home based squad did it’s best despite succumbing to a 3-1 loss to Iraq in Friday evening’s away international friendly match at Al Madina Stadium in Baghdad.

The friendly marked Asanovic’s debut match in charge following his appointment in January on a four-year deal.

In a post-match interview, Asanovic said his local players gave 100% even though some of them were debutants at the international stage.

“After the result of 3-1, no one is happy especially me and my players. What I said after the game, I told my players that they have given 100%. They did their best, but we conceded a goal in 10 minutes which is a penalty which does not exist but anyway it is not an excuse,” he said.

“You know after that we conceded another goal through a set piece. From that we scored a goal to make it 2-1 and we went to second half. We changed the formation a bit and introduced new players, we controlled the game, but we were not dangerous,” Asanovic said.

Asanovic said the loss to Iraq was a lesson to his team.

“Some of the players it was the first time to see the ground with 40, 000 people. We are working hard; we know what we want. The energy I saw today was very good. This is a school for my boys we need more games, we need to find more opponents,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zambia has a tentative date against Angola on March 25 in Portugal and a confirmed friendly against Guinea on March 29 in Paris, France.

Family members, friends pay tribute to RB

14

Family and friends of the late fourth republican President Rupiah Banda have described him as a selfless man who fought for the development of Zambia and the entire African region.

Speaking during the state funeral service of the late Mr. Banda at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka yesterday, the widow, Thandiwe Banda said she was blessed to have shared her life with her late husband.

Mrs. Banda said she will remember her late husband as a kind, warm and friendly person who was a father to many.

The former first lady said this in a speech read on her behalf by her close friend Alice Banda.

Mrs. Banda stated that she shared an interesting and supportive life with her late husband who always protected his family and everyone close to him.

She disclosed that she shared many memories with the late Mr. Banda, among them travelling around the world, watching soccer and listening to music together and celebrating many birthdays together.

‘’You enjoyed sharing old memories with me as we created new ones together such as travelling the world and showing me so many places as we tried out many delicacies. You were my lover, protector and husband,’’ she said.

And late Mr. Banda’s son, Dingani, described his late father as a liberal man who was open to family and friends.

Dingani said his late father was the greatest cheer leader who always celebrated his family’s achievements.

He said the late former President shared a unique father and daughter in- law relationship with his in-laws and made sure they were free to talk to him and comfortable around him.

“My father destroyed the barriers of in-laws’ relationship, he made sure that his daughters in-law felt comfortable with him and shared a unique father-daughter in-laws relationship with them,’’ he said.

And in a special tribute, late Mr. Banda’s daughter, Duniya, broke down in a song dedicated to her father.

Duniya said during the days when her father was hospitalised, she and the late Mr. Banda would together sing a song called ‘Loliwe’ done by a South African singer Zahara.

This sent the majority of the mourners in the Cathedral of the Holy Congress into tears.

Meanwhile, the late Mr. Banda’s longest childhood friend, Jacob Mwanza, described the late fourth President as a generous and modest man who started serving humanity at a very young age.

Mr. Mwanza said the late fourth head of state was a generous man who contributed to empowering various small scale farmers by giving them farming inputs.

He said the late Mr. Banda also donated materials to various schools and hospitals, a gesture which he never wanted to publicise.

“Mr. Banda was a talented modest business man and a farmer who donated fertiliser and seeds to small scale farmers and never wanted to be praised for the good that he did for others, he has left a huge gap in his family and the whole country,’’ added Mr. Mwanza.

The late Mr. Banda was born on February 19, 1937 in Gwanda, Northern Rhodesia then but now called Zimbabwe. He received his secondary education at Munali secondary school in Zambia and later studies in various universities outside Zambia.

The late Mr. Banda joined politics at a young age and actively participated during the first republican president Kenneth Kaunda’s regime.

He served as the fourth President of Zambia from 2008 to 2011, taking over from late third President Levy Mwanawasa who died as the sitting President in 2008.

The late Mr. Banda died on March 11, 2022 after suffering from colon cancer.

He is survived by a widow, Thandiwe, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

People have said a lot of good things. May those good things become part of us

Former President Edgar Lungu has bemoaned the hypocrisy that is being seen where people say good things and then do what he described as bad things.

Speaking to ZNBC after the burial ceremony of the lat fourth President Rupiah Banda, Mr. Lungu said that if Zambians learned to dialogue with one another as was experienced during the days of mourning, the country would probably get somewhere.

“If we learn to dialogue with one another as we have experienced during the days of mourning, probably we can get somewhere as a country.

“Dialogue, genuine dialogue between all of us. Those who were in government before, and those who are in now. But what we are seeing is hypocrisy. Where people say good things and then do bad things.

“And if we can expunge the hypocrisy from our lives and just say it as it is, between now and embarking into the future, it’s a lesson we are learning from Rupiah Banda’s legacy. People have said a lot of good things.

“May those good things become part of us, the president said

Chissano urges Zambians to maintain unity, peace

He was speaking before departure at Kenneth Kaunda international Airport this afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Chissano attended the funeral church service of late Mr. Banda, who died on March 11, 2022.

There is a need to quickly address the chaos at the Black Mountain

7

Copperbelt based good governance activist Peter Mulenga is calling for peace and harmony to prevail as cooperatives and hand-pickers operate at the Kitwe mineral dump site commonly known the Black Mountain.

Confusion this week characterized operations at the Black Mountain as hand pickers also referred to as scavengers fought for their share at the mineral dump site.

Police on Tuesday and Thursday fought running battles with scavengers after they were denied entry into the Black Mountain area.

The scavengers blocked the Kitwe-Ndola Road with tyres, logs and stones in protest.

The scavengers mostly youths want access to the Black Mountain as well despite not being in cooperatives.

In an interview with Lusaka Times, Mr. Mulenga said there is a need to quickly address the chaos at the Black Mountain.

Mr. Mulenga said the situation at the Black Mountain in its current form is a disaster in the making.

He noted that among the scavengers there are genuine individuals who deserve a chance to operate at the Black Mountain despite not belonging to the much talked about cooperatives.

Mr. Mulenga, however, said some people causing confusion at the Black Mountain in the name of being scavengers must be dealt with according to the law.

“The issue of the so called “scavengers” at the Black Mountain is a delicate matter. These are youths who genuinely want to share a piece of cake from their country’s national resources. We hear they are not in cooperatives as per guidelines. Is it difficult to help them form the so called cooperatives? We also hear they are only given a few hours to allow them operating. Why can’t each team be given designated days in which to operate? In this way pickers will have separate days to work and also the ones with machinery will equally have their days to operate,” Mr. Mulenga said.

He proposed that the Government through Ministry of Mines and Mineral Development should come up with a proper scheduled that would allow hand pickers and those in cooperatives operate separately to end confusion.

“Can government and all stake holders devise a workable solution to this feud? Come up with safe work procedures that will strictly be adhered to. Seek advice from mining houses like Kansanshi, Mopani Copper Mines or Konkola Copper Mines who have safety and mining experts. The situation at the black mountain in its current form is a disaster in the making. As the situation stands, the so called scavengers are very distraught about the prospect of been left out,” Mr. Mulenga said.

“Let the hand pickers be organized and let the Government secure them at the site as well without segregation. But also I sense that the Scavengers are used so if they want to go the root of lawlessness then let the law take its course. The scavengers do really matter and can’t be ignored. Let’s let what’s happening at the mountain not to happen again so all parties at the Black Mountain must be engaged. Even those who behind this behaviour, take this opportunity to engage, there is no immediate cause of concern. Let’s make sure all parties are satisfied,” Mr. Mulenga said.

The Government last month officially handed over 30 % of the Kitwe Mineral Slag Dump commonly known as Black Mountain to cooperatives owned by the local youth and women.

The Black Mountain located between Wusakile and Nkana West is owned by Nkana Alloy, who are the major shareholders with the Government having a minor stake.

When handing over the 30% portion of the Black Mountain in February, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe told the cooperatives to begin operations with immediate effect.

Some Zambians are on social media 24/7 accusing HH of incompetence, is it social media abuse?

19

By Venus N Msyani

Some Zambians are always on social media accusing president Hakainde Hichilema of incompetence. Is it social media abuse? Would strongly agree with those who argue that it is not.

On Friday 11th of March 2022, when delivering his first state of the nation address to parliament on the application of national values and principles, President Hichilema threatened that UPND administration will vigorously enforce laws on social media.

To justify his threat, the president is accusing social media of promoting hate speech, cybercrime and bullying, and circulating fake news and obscene materials. The same excuse former Patriotic Front (PF) government used to muzzle social media.

It is not clear which laws the Zambian president is referring to as his administration has not produced any cyber law yet.

Most of the time, where there is a law there is a warning. By issuing a warning it means President Hakainde is ready to enforce existing Patriotic Front (PF) crafted cyber laws.

These laws left Zambians who posted and commented on social media in a language that appeared to offend the previous government live in fear and UPND victory was a relief.

Unfortunately, not for a long time. HH warning has messed up the relief. The president has planted the seed of fear. Social media fans will no longer be able to engage on social media freely.

It is not true that Zambians are abusing social media. Hate speech, cybercrime and bullying, fake news and obscene materials are scapegoats.

Most Zambians are online 24/7 because of disappointment. UPND is failing to deliver change they prayed and voted for.

Defamation of the president law is perceived by most Zambians to undermine freedom of expression. Nevertheless, UPND has opted to keep it. Citizens are being arrested for insulting HH. It is not the change most Zambians voted for.

Selective fight against corruption is not the change most Zambians voted for. About 99% of corruption cases being delt with in the country at the moment involve the opposition. Not because the rest are not corrupt but because corruption allegations involving the new dawn administration receive no serious attention.

Civil servants continue to be harassed and attacked by cadres. It is not the change Zambians prayed and voted for.

The president is now threating to vigorously enforce condemned PF crafted cyber laws. Again, it is not the change Zambians prayed and voted for. The list is endless.

The point is that President Hakainde should let social media be. Spending 24/7 online accusing him of incompetence is not social media abuse. It is freedom of expression Zambians voted for on August 12th 2021.

Iraq Beat Chipolopolo

6

Chipolopolo lost 3-1 to Iraq on Friday evening in a friendly match played in Baghdad.

Zambia trailed two-one into halftime in which the first three goals of the match all came on the opening half-hour.

Dhurgham Ismail put Iraq ahead from the penalty shot in the 10th minute and Ahmad Ibrahim extended the host lead thirteen minutes later while a 29th minute Saad Natiq own-goal handed Zambia their only goal of the match.

But the home-based players Zambia team went on to control the second half but just lacked the final touch upfront.

Chipolopolo came close to equalizing in the 71st minute but midfielder Kelvin Mubanga’s fine volley from outside the box went inches wide of the right post.

Iraq then stretched their lead out of the blues through Ayem Hussein who beat Dominic Chanda and Prosper Chiluya on the edge of the area to fire in the ball past goalkeeper Charles Kalumba.

Chipolopolo defender Solomon Sakala then ghosted into the area in the 84th minute but his cheeky shot from a Mubanga cross was gathered by Iraq goalkeeper Mohammed Hameed.

Meanwhile, the friendly marked Chipolopolo coach Aljosa Asanovic’s debut match in charge following his appointment in January.

Asanovic is now set to trim his home-based team with part of the side returning home while the other heads to Europe to join his overseas call-ups for two more friendlies next week.

Zambia has a tentative date against Angola on March 25 in Portugal and a confirmed friendly against Guinea on March 29 in Paris.

Mrs. Kabende said the Dubai 2020 expo has raised her aspirations as a fashion designer.

There is currently a short supply of dollars in Zambia-BOZ Chief

16

Bank of Zambia Governor, Denny Kalyalya has acknowledged that there is currently a short supply of dollars in the country.

In an interview Dr. Kalyalya has attributed the short supply to the transition period and settling in of the new dawn government, stating that some business players that contribute to the supply of dollars in the market had halted their operations in the country during the said period.

He however stated that the central bank is constantly surveying the market and doing what it can to address the situation.

The central bank governor further stated that things seem to be looking up as several players are getting back and beginning to undertake several activities with investors expressing interest to invest in the country.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kalyalya has cautioned that the effects of the Russia and Ukraine war will have a long-lasting impact on most economies including Zambia.

He is hopeful that the war will soon end but was quick to mention that Zambia will have to do what it can to survive the period.

76- year- old man assaulted by his wife and children on allegations practicing witchcraft.

6

A 76- year- old man of Poya village in Shiwang’andu district has been assaulted by his wife and biological children on allegations that he was practicing witchcraft.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Lucky Munkondya, has confirmed the incident in an interview with Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Shiwang’andu today.

Ms. Munkondya has identified the victim as Bernard Malama 76, of Poya village in chief Nkula’s chiefdom in Shiwang’andu and said the incident occurred on 15th March 2022.

She said Malama was beaten by his biological children and his wife of the same residence following allegations of him practicing witchcraft.

Ms. Munkondya said sticks are alleged to have been used to assault the victim who sustained painful arms, painful legs, a cut on the lower lip, headache, a cut on left cheek, and general body pains.

She said brief facts are that for a long time, the children have been suspecting their father to have been the one behind various ailments they were suffering from.

Ms. Munkondya explained that on the material day, the children and their mother confronted Malama and took the law into their hands by beating him.

She said four suspects, including Malama’s wife, have since been arrested and they will appear in court soon.
