Search at my private residence was illegal and no Money was found-Valden Findlay

25

Lusaka businessman Valden Findlay says no money was found at his private residence during the search by the police. In a statement to the media, Mr. Findlay said the search was illegal and conducted in his absence.

Mr said that the falsehoods being perpetrated on social media that money was found at his residence and stolen by police officers are false.

“In response to the recent events that have been distorted by social media, I would like to state and correct the position. A search was carried out by the relevant government authorities at my private residence, I take issue with the legality of the Search, which was conducted in my absence and despite the officers being advised by my Lawyers that this was illegal, they proceeded anyway. However, to be clear no money was found at my residence or allegedly stolen by any police officers. This is all “fake news,” Mr. Findlay said.

Mr. Findlay added that he is saddened that in an attempt to tarnish his name and reputation and possibly sell their stories the relevant social media platforms, have not only deliberately published lies about him, but also attacked the integrity of the Zambia Police Service.

“It is indeed sad that such ‘fake news’ undermines public confidence in the truthfulness of journalism by publishing lies that can never be substantiated. Social media has become a common place to attack and settle scores with individuals just because one can. It is unfair in an attempt to gain followers social media platforms have resort to publishing lies about me, knowingly are untrue with no shred of evidence or truth to support these,” he said.

“It is expected that any reputable journalist would verify their source before taking to publishing, why mislead the public and publish rumors, knowing you have no credible source. Most of these social media platforms get away with their fake content because they cannot be taken to task in court due to their virtual existence, they get away with publishing content that is irreparable to an individual,” he added.

He emphasized that he has not committed any crime, but that he has been judged, found guilty, and condemned in the public domain, adding that his silence has been taken advantage of.

“We undermine the power of social media and how it can destroy any individual, their life and affect their family. Our society has been indoctrinated to believe anything that has been published in the social media simply because it has been published,” Mr. Findlay said.

“I would like to state loud and clear that none of the stories published in the social media about me are true, they have been deliberately distorted in an attempt to gain followers. We ought to be mindful that such bad publicity and cyberbullying can happen to anyone and that such baseless rumors have the potential of destroying lives. To date, no shred of evidence to substantiate any of the allegations published has been brought forth. The recent story of money allegedly found at my residence with a police officer on the run and my having paid a bribe is all lies,” he said.

He said the respective authorities should correct the position by issuing a public statement to that effect, as this is not only affecting him as an individual, his family, and his reputation, but also the integrity of our Zambia Police Service worldwide.

Zambians celebrate First Independence day without KK

12

Zambians yesterday celebrated the country’s 57th Independence Aniversary for the first time without the founding president Dr Kenneth Kaunda who passed on this year, with National Heritage Conservation Commission Executive Director CCollins Chipote saying that there is need to uphold the values that Zambia’s founding President stood for.

Mr. Chipote said that patriotism, national unity and peace must be championed and passed on to the generations to come, when he launched the KENNETH KAUNDA youth business tourism and education hub which will be led by the Kelvin Nyirongo Hope Foundation at the Chilenje National Monument in Lusaka.

In Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao said that the government is committed to promoting tenets of good governance that will spur economic growth.

Mr Mbao also stated that it is important for Zambians to live in harmony with each other to promote development.

He said peace is an important ingredient for development as no meaningful development can be achieved without it.

He has since challenged Zambians to uphold the peace that the country’s forefathers fought for during the independence struggle.

Mr Mbao said this when he officiated at the Independence Day celebrations in Kasama that was held at the civic Centre grounds.

He added that it is the desire of the new dawn government to see that people live in harmony with each other.

“We need to learn to coexist. We need to embrace each other regardless of our political, religious or ethnic background,” he said

And Northern Province Freedom Fighters Association Chairperson Teddy Mwenya also emphasized on the need for Zambian to uphold the peace and unity.

Mr Mwenya said people should build on the foundation that the forefathers laid to promote unity in line with the country’s motto of One Zambia one nation.

“Let us learn to coexist because before anything else we are Zambians and we should uphold the one Nation motto,” he noted

Mr Mwenya has also expressed happiness with the turn up of youths at this year’s Independence Day celebrations

In Muchinga Province Minister Henry Sikazwe yesterday led scores of residents in celebrating this year’s independence with call to renounce political and religious affiliation but instead promote love for continued peace and unity.

Mr Sikazwe made the call at Chinsali’s president park this morning during this year’s 57th Independence Day celebrations.

He said government recognizes that poverty is among the challenges affecting people and pledged that government will provide an enabling environment for prosperity.

Mr Sikazwe noted that government will work towards fulfilling the promises echoed during the campaigns that of creating employment and opening business opportunity.

He cited the creation of the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment as well as the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise as game changer for the youths and women.

He encouraged the youths and women to form companies and cooperatives in order to benefit from the programmes government will be rolling out soon.

“Government will make sure that it fulfils its campaign promises of job creation and business opportunities,” he added.

Meanwhile, a senior citizen, Hearings Sabi, has called on residents of Chinsali to give the UPND time to put things in order before the results of development begin to show results.

Mr Sabi expressed confidence that the region will witness unprecedented development in all sectors.

He observed that this year’s Independence Day celebration is unique as it is being celebrated for the first time without Zambia’s founding presidents Kenneth Kaunda who fought for the freedom.

Meanwhile, other freedom fighters in Chinsali district have called on government to consider having a representation of freedom fighters in Parliament as well as putting each of them on a monthly salary.

Freedom fighters Provincial vice Secretary Andrew Mulenga said only a few benefited in the past and hence called for the need to recognize the remaining fighters.

Earlier the Provincial Minister led service chief and government officials in laying of wreaths at Chinsali’s cenotaph.

This year’s Independence Day celebrations is being held under the theme “Celebrating a New dawn Anchored on Good Governance, National Unity and Development”

The celebrations were characterized by songs, dances and poems from various schools and community based theatre groups.

Tambatamba tells people to renounce political differences

8

Labour and social security Minister, Brenda Tambatamba has urged Zambians to put aside all their political differences and work together for the common good of the country.

Speaking during the independence celebrations in Kasempa district yesterday, Ms Tambatamba disclosed that the United Party for National Development (UPND) administration is determined to unify the country.

She said the vigor to renounce political difference is evidenced by President Hakainde Hichilema’s zero discrimination tolerance policy.

Ms Tambatamba who is also Kasempa Member of Parliament said the President has indicated his commitment towards zero tolerance to discrimination against language, political or religious affiliation

“We are determined to achieve the Zambia we want, an all-inclusive Zambia, a prosperous Zambia and a peaceful Zambia,” she said.

“President Hakainde Hichilema is committed to encouraging that no one is discriminated against based on where they came from, the language they speak or the faith they hold or indeed political affiliation,” she said

Meanwhile, Kasempa freedom fighters Association Secretary, Stanley Kyungupengu congratulated President Hichilema for winning the August 12, 2021 general elections.

“We thank President Hakainde Hichilema for your leadership by changing the old government to a new one,” Mr Kyungupengu said.

This year’s independence celebrations is being commemorated under the theme ‘celebrating a new dawn anchored on good governance, national unity and development’.

Zambia, Turkey discuss investment

4

Turkey’s Minister of Trade, Mehmet Mus has called for intensified collaboration between the Turkish private sector and the Zambian business community.

He indicated that more interaction between the two countries will help to reverse the low trade volume which stood at US$26 million in 2019 and US$25 million last year, which was not impressive.

Mr Mus was speaking during a bilateral meeting with Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga on the sidelines of the just-ended 3rd Turkey-Africa Economic and Business Forum in Turkey’s commercial and industrial hub of Istanbul.

He noted that the low volume in figures is as result of lack of knowledge by many business people in Turkey and sub-Saharan African countries like Zambia.

‘’We need to organize events such as business forums to make our people meet so that they can have more knowledge about the country and make informed decisions to invest,” he said.

Mr Mus also called for early conclusion of negotiations between Zambia and Turkey on Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (ADTA) between the two countries.

And Mr Mulenga said the new dawn government is seeking investment that can promote value addition to raw materials through sustainable partnerships with Zambians.

He stated that government is determined to transform Zambia into a value addition and production hub.

Mr Mulenga assured that Turkish investment in Zambia was secure in line with the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) signed between the two countries.

He also added that Zambia would remain consistent in terms of business legislation and policies for the mutual benefit of the Zambian people and investors.

‘’Zambia remains an investment destination of choice due to peace, stability and legislation that enables businesses to thrive,’’ noted Mr Mulenga.

‘’By investing in Zambia, the Turkish private sector, would also be tapping into the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) markets with a combined population of over 600 million people,’’ he explained.

The Turkey-Africa Economic and Business Forum was held under the theme: “Deepening Turkey-Africa Partnership: Trade, Investment, Technology and Logistics.”

This is contained in a statement issued to the media by the Zambian Embassy in Turkey, First Secretary Jeremy Munthali.

Interpreting the meaning of PF win in the East

20

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

After suffering shock defeat in the August 2021 general elections, PF is at least consoled, in what Republican Vice President Mutale Nalumango aptly refers to as, ‘retaining’ their seats in Eastern province in the recently held by-elections. PF leaders were of course quick to pop the champagne and pat themselves on their backs as they reveled in this sweet victory!

While congratulating her team for winning the elections, as if she’s the Alfa and the Omega, FDD leader Edith Nawakwi charged that President Hakainde Hichilema will only rule for one term; further accusing him of winning the August elections by fluke!

And speaking after Dr. Mwanza was declared winner, PF Central Committee Member in charge of Information and Publicity Rapheal Nakachinda claimed the victory is the beginning of UPND losing the 2026 general elections.

Widely respected scholar Sishuwa Sishuwa equally shared his views in his article aptly titled, “Why the PF won the Kaumbwe parliamentary election.” He argued that the PF’s campaign message of ethnic marginalisation proved effective or found fertile ground in Kaumbwe. Sishuwa further observed that the other reason why PF secured the Kaumbwe parliamentary seat is that the constituency has been a stronghold of the former ruling party for some time now.

He went on to state that the UPND had a poor or ineffective campaign strategy in Kaumbwe built around party chairperson for elections Gary Nkombo, a non-Easterner, and opportunistic PF members such as Peter Daka and Moses Mawere. He concluded by emphasizing that the PF did a good job identifying a candidate who commanded greater grassroots support and had established a lot of community projects in the area.

While we may concur with Sishuwa’s assumptions in a certain way, it’s also important to delve into the annals of recent history to better understand the systematic voting patterns in the region. This would definitely help us better understand why PF managed to pull this one off.

During the much-anticipated 1991 general elections when the nation rejected the one-party rule and instead opted to settle for multiparty politics, final results gave the MMD 125 seats, with UNIP winning the remaining 25. Out of these, UNIP retained all the 19 parliamentary seats in Eastern province, managing to salvage the remaining 6 seats in selected parts of the country.

Fast forward 1996 when the Chiluba regime tampered with the constitution to bar UNIP leader, Dr. Kenneth D. Kaunda, from participating in the elections due to the parentage clause, the party would commit political suicide by boycotting the polls! With UNIP out of the race, MMD would easily amass131 parliamentary seats countrywide, leaving 3 other political parties and Independents to share the remaining 19 seats amongst themselves.

And by 2001 when the electorate trooped back to the polls, MMD’s lion’s share of seats would be reduced to a paltry 69 seats; thanks to the baby born with teeth in the mouth, the UPND which would wrestle impressive 49 slots! By this time, UNIP had long awakened from slumber, managing to re-claim 13 seats in its traditional stronghold of Eastern province.

However, during the 2006 elections, UNIP would go into an alliance with other political parties in an attempt to improve its fortunes. MMD would completely annihilate UNIP in the Eastern block and proceed to thump other opposition political parties; confining the likes of PF to Northern, Luapula, Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces and UPND to Western, Southern and Central provinces and Copperbelt rural.

During the 2011 scintillating general elections that would see MMD being deposed from power, PF would comfortably bag 60 seats in Northern, Copperbelt, Luapula and Lusaka provinces, while MMD would retain 55 seats in Eastern, Luapula and Northern provinces. UPND would manage to win 28 seats in Southern, North western and Western provinces and Copperbelt rural.

With the country very much polarized due to tribal rhetoric spewed by reckless and selfish politicians, the 2016 general elections would reveal a country divided into two regions – much of north-east regions would go to PF, while south-west would go to UPND.

And by the time elections were held in 2021, the political terrain would remain pretty much the same; save for the UPND penetrating into hitherto PF strongholds, claiming victory in urbanized provinces such as Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces. The party would equally perform well at the Presidential level in some parts of northern and eastern regions although the party would lose lamentably at parliamentary level due to floating unpopular candidates.

Is it therefore correct to insinuate that a win for PF in Eastern province is simply a harbinger for better things to come for the former ruling party, while a loss for ruling UPND entails a quick departure from State House come 2026?Wrong!

If you referred back to our history, you would appreciate that Eastern province remained loyal to UNIP for a long time even as other regions were hankering for change. There’s actually a shared belief that it actually took years for those in rural areas to realize that KK had long been extracted from power! And finally, when people got fed up of MMD and chose to eject the same from power, easterners would stick with MMD for a while. It’s hardly surprising that ba kumawa have elected to continue flirting with PF even the rest of the country is embracing change as demonstrated by the results from by-elections held in different parts of the country at the same time.

You got to respect Easterners for who they are. They are a highly conservative lot, not easily moved by ‘ichimwela.’ Once the UPND starts delivering to their satisfaction, particularly in the agriculture sector, the entire province including Petauke where Lungu supposedly hails from would have switched camp pronto! Watch this space!

ACC gets support from Transparency International Zambia over Faith Musonda’s Deal

9

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) has backed the stance taken by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to enter into a seizure agreement regarding the Faith Musonda matter.

TIZ said that it is of the view that had the Faith Musonda case been taken to court, it was going to take time to be concluded and chances are that she could have won the case because she would have hired good lawyers to represent her.

TIZ president Sampa Kalunga in an interview with phoenix news has also reminded those condemning the move taken by the ACC to enter into a seizure agreement that this law is provided for in section 80 (3) (a) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.

Mr. Kalunga added that the government should actually be commended that within a month, it has managed to recover K65 million, US$57,000 and a house worth about K6 million which were dubiously acquired.

He further adds that with the ACC not well funded and have a history of not winning such high-profile cases, it was only prudent that the commission entered into the seizure agreement with the suspect so that the assets are given back to the state.

Nkwazi Beat Power Dynamos to Go Second

0

Nkwazi reclaimed second place on the FAZ Super League table following a 1-0 home win over Power Dynamos at Edwin Emboela Stadium in Lusaka.

The Policemens’ victory knocked  defending FAZ Super League champions Zesco United from number  two where they had sneaked into 24 hours earlier following a 1-1  away draw with Green Buffaloes in  Lusaka.

But it took until the 83rd minute for Nkwazi to collect the win through a White Mwanambaba own-goal.

Mwanambaba’s heroic but futile attempt  with a diving header to keep out unmarked Bernard Kumwenda’s  shot went horribly  wrong when the defender stood in for Power goalkeeper Justin Kakunta who was nowhere in sight.

Nkwazi  rise to 15 points,  after  demoting  Zesco  to third on  12 points and are  now five points  behind leaders  Buffaloes  at the end of round eight.

Power are third  from bottom with  5 points at the end of Week 8 as reality sunk in for new coach  Mwenya Chipepo after winning his first game last weekend of how tough his mandate to revive the  stuttering six-times  fortunes are.

Meanwhile,  new boys  Kafue  Celtic extended  their unbeaten  run to  five games  after  the fifth placed side held  Lusaka Dynamos  to a 1-1 draw  in the lunchtime kickoff of the Emboela  doubleheader.

Marvin Jere  put  Lusaka  Dynamos ahead in  the  47th minute but  Celtic won a 7th minute penalty  that  was  converted  by Mwiza Siwale.

Celtic have 12 points after collecting two draws and three wins as they prepare to host Nkana this Saturday at the same venue.

Meanwhile at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola, Indeni and Konkola Blades shared the spoils in this all-promotion clash.

Clement Mulenga put Indeni ahead in the 50th minute but his team mate and defender conceded a 61st minute own-goal to see Blades head back to Chililabombwe with a share of the points.

Indeni and Blades are amongst five sides on 10 points in 10th and 6th place respectively.

Former vice Presidents denounce political hatred

5

Former Republican Vice Presidents have called for respect of divergent views and upholding of peace among politicians in the country.

Immediate past Vice President Inonge Wina said both the old and youthful population should uphold national values and principles in order to foster peace and tranquility.

Mrs Wina who served as Vice President under the Patriotic Front government from 2015 to 2021, explained that people should desist from using social media to demonize others.

The longest serving Republican Vice President pointed out that politicians should embrace national unity and development now that elections are over.

ZANIS reports that Mrs Wina also called on youths to be champions of national peace and unity as they are key players in the democratic governance.

“Let us not use social media to demonize others politically for we are all one Zambia one nation and there is no country that will call Zambia apart from this mother land. Elections are now past us, let all forge ahead and be united so that peace and unity prevail in our only country,” she stressed.

She emphasized that women countrywide need to be commended for working tirelessly to provide food for the families through the businesses they run in markets.

And Enock Kavindele also explained that for the past 57 years, Zambia has demonstrated that peace and unity are tools that can propel social and economic development.

Mr Kavindele who served as Vice President in the late Levy Patrick Mwanawasa’s administration from May 4, 2001 to May 29, 2003 stated that Independence Day is the unifying day for all people from the cross section of society.

He called on politicians to quickly resolve their differences whenever they do not agree in order to pave way for economic development.

“So far our politicians are doing fine where resolving conflicts is concerned and October is the month we should use to iron out any differences and foster peace and unity. We should all co-exists for the country to record massive development,” he charged.

Meanwhile, Nevers Mumba said former office bearers are key pillars of national unity and peace.

Dr Mumba who served as Vice President from 2003 to 2004 placed emphasis on political party leaders to only differ intellectually.

He further said attending the independence celebrations was part of refocusing Zambia where all the people will economically and politically be stable and free.

Zambia is today celebrated the Independence attained on October 24th 1964 under the theme “Celebrating a New Dawn Anchored on Good Governance, National Unity and Development”

Zambians in the diaspora charged to promote economic diplomacy

9

Zambia’s outgoing Ambassador to Germany, Anthony Mukwita has urged Zambians living in the diaspora to play a critical role in promoting economic diplomacy.

He indicated that economic diplomacy, as championed by President Hakainde Hichilema is intended to foster development in Zambia.

Mr Mukwita said this when he officiated at the virtual celebration of Zambia’s 57th Independency anniversary organized by Zambians living in Germany and attended virtually and in person by scores of members of the diaspora.

He stated that this year’s independence celebration theme “Celebrating a new dawn anchored on good governance” provides the foundation needed to anchor economic diplomacy.

Mr Mukwita explained that in his experience, foreign investors inquire about good governance, national unity and development as prerequisites for investment.

He noted that good governance ensures that there is a fair judicial system that protects investment, national unity and ensures that there is peace and stability.

Mr Mukwita said that the leadership of President Hichilema is committing itself to these ideals and asking the citizens to hold it accountable to them.

‘’This year’s theme for independency is a call on the Diaspora to commit themselves to the ideals of good governance, national unity and development wherever they may be, these ideals must be a mark of distinction and identity so much so that they become synonymous with Zambia”, he said.

Mr Mukwita also paid tribute to the diaspora for their commitment to development of their motherland, noting that the virtual independence celebration was his final official engagement as Ambassador to Germany since October 2017.

“Some of you have humanitarian activities that include building schools, donating educational materials, supporting efforts to combat COVID-19, assisting widows and orphans, and many other worthy causes”, said Mr Mukwita.

This is contained in a statement issued to ZANIS by First Secretary, Press and Public Relations to Zambia’s Ambassador to Germany, Kellys Kaunda.
