The Human Rights Commission condemns Kanyama killings

3

The Human Rights Commission has strongly condemned the killing of two suspected Patriotic Front (PF) supporters in Kanyama Township in Lusaka on July 30, 2021.

Human Rights Commission Spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya has described the killing as a horrendous act of depriving the victims of their right to life and has called for the perpetrators to be punished in accordance with the law in order to end impunity and prevent further criminal acts and grave violations or abuse of human rights.

“The brutal killing of the duo is repugnant to the fact that all human beings are endowed with reason and conscience and must act towards each other in a humane manner,” he said.

Mr. Muleya has advised that the country seriously assess the negative impact of drug abuse on crime and violation of human rights and develop a robust national rehabilitation programme, to create a humane society as a long term solution to the violence.

He said it is extremely regrettable that the apparent politically-related murder happened barely three days after the Commission called on all political party leaders to order their supporters to lay down their weapons of violence and stop all forms of violence.

Mr. Muleya has commended the Zambia Police Service for swiftly arresting the suspected perpetrators.

“The Commission commiserates with the families of the deceased male citizens. It is regrettable that life deprived can never be restored but the Commission prays that the unfettered wheels of justice will contribute to compensating their pain caused by the unbearable loss,” he said.

Mr. Muleya has appealed to various interest groups and institutions to allow Police to professionally and independently deal with the criminal matter without any form of interference or influence.

He has reiterated the commission’s call to all political party leaders to order their supporters to stop all acts of political and electoral violence and contribute to creating a peaceful environment for democratic and popular participation of the electorate to vote for candidates of their choice on August 12, 2021.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front (PF) member of the Central Committee, Brian Mundubile has condemned the violence which took place in Lusaka’s Kanyama Constituency that led to the death of two members of the party.

Mr. Mundubile said such barbaric behaviour must be condemned in the strongest terms. He said it is sad that lives could be lost in such a manner adding that no elective position is worth human blood.

“It is unacceptable that human life could be lost in that manner. No seat is worth blood. This cannot be condoned,” said Mr. Mundubile Mr. Mundubile, who is also PF Mporokoso Parliamentary candidate, has challenged opposition party leaders to emulate President Edgar Lungu who has strongly condemned violence.

He noted that the peace agreement that was signed by the political parties will not be meaningful, if leaders do not take responsibility to curb violence.

“If political leaders don’t take it upon themselves to stop violence, the peace accord that was signed will remain an academic exercise,” he said.

President Lungu happy with church-Sumaili

Former Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs, Godfridah Sumaili says President Edgar Lungu is happy that the church has collaborated well with the government in executing the country’s programs.

Reverend Sumaili says this is the reason the voice of the church is critical on national matters.

ZANIS reports that Reverend Sumaili was speaking during a meeting with the pastor’s fellowship in Mongu district of the Western province today.

She said President Lungu is aware that the church has ensured people are kept morally upright and that it should continue to preach peace.

“The voice of the church has been coming out clearly on issues of national interest hence President Lungu saw it fit to collaborate with the clergy in running the affairs of this nation,” Rev. Sumaili said.

“We are in an election year; the church being in the forefront should ensure there is no violence, insults of demining each other, character assassination. The church should be summoning politicians involved in politics of violence,” said Rev. Sumaili.

And Jesus Anointed Ministry Overseer and advocate for the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation, Billy Mfula said the functions of the church have been enhanced by President Lungu through the creation of the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs in the country.

Bishop Mfula said Zambia is poised for economic recovery because it is a beacon of peace in the World.

“It is now 30 years when Zambia was declared a Christian nation. This is a great year for Zambia, as it has reached maturity to demonstrate its achievements,” said Bishop Mfula.

Meanwhile, Western province Pastor’s Fellowship Chairperson, Alick Kalonga appealed to both President Lungu and Vice president Inonge Wina to shepherd the people of Zambia in peace and love during this period of campaigns in the country.

Reverend Sumaili is in western province to encourage church leaders to preach peace during this campaign period.

President Lungu deploys soldiers as violence escalates two weeks before elections

53

President Edgar Lungu has ordered the Defence Forces to help the Zambia Police Service deal with political violence ahead of the August 12th General polls.

President Lungu said maintaining law and order in the country is not only the job of the police but also other security wings.

He wrote on his Facebook page that the soldiers have so far been deployed in Lusaka and will be deployed in other parts of the country if the situation demands so.

“Fellow citizens, In order to curb the polical violence we have witnessed in the past two days, I have allowed the Zambia Army, Zambia Air Force and Zambia National Service to help the Zambia Police in dealing with the security situation,” President Lungu said.

“Maintaining law and order is a daily chore of the police, but sometimes they need help from other security wings. Defence wing personnel have already been deployed in some parts of Lusaka and will be deployed in other parts of the country if the situation demands so,” President Lungu stated.

He said this step has been taken in order to ensure that the work of the Electoral Commission of Zambia is not interfered with.

“The events in Kanyama where two of our members were allegedly killed in political violence makes me very sad. I’m sad not because the victims were members of my party, but because they were Zambians who didn’t deserve to die in that manner,” he said.

He said government will not allow what happened in Kanyama to be repeated anywhere else in our country.

“We cannot shed any more blood. I expect all political players to exercise maximum restraint, even under provocation and allow the law to take its course. Let us not forget who we are – one Zambia, one nation,” said President Lungu.

He added:”I can only promise that we will do much better. Everyone is ready to finish in the top six. We are ready and I think everyone is ready.”

ECZ says Investigations in Kanyama violence is underway and there will be consequences

The Electoral Commission of Zambia(ECZ), has instituted investigations into the violent incident that occurred in Kanyama Constituency in Lusaka, which resulted in loss of lives.

Speaking during a press briefing in Chongwe District, ECZ Acting Chief Electoral Officer, Royd Katongo warned that appropriate action will be taken against those involved in the alleged murder of the two Patriotic Front (PF) supporters.

Mr. Katongo noted that the Commission strongly condemns the barbaric act which has led to loss of lives and violation of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

He said ECZ is disappointed with the continued acts of violence among political parties even after issuing warnings in the recent past.

“ECZ is deeply saddened by the incident in Kanyama Constituency in Lusaka in which the lives of two Patriotic Front (PF) supporters were allegedly murdered,” Mr. Katongo stated.

He reminded that the Commission has in recent past issued warnings to political players to conduct themselves in line with provisions of the electoral code of conduct.

Mr. Katongo appealed to all political stakeholders to remain calm and avoid any retaliatory acts as the Commission was carrying out investigations for appropriate actions.

Meanwhile, Vice president, Inonge Wina has commended the people of Bwacha Constituency in Kabwe in Central Province, for conducting peaceful campaigns.

Mrs. Wina said it is important that peace is maintained in the country during and after the August 12 general elections.

She stated that President Edgar Lungu has on many occasions condemned violence during elections hence the need for peace to prevail.

Mrs wina said the President Lungu has indicated that it is not violence that wins an election, but a vote that will change the scenario of political leadership.

Speaking when she held a meeting with aspiring candidates for Bwacha constituency in the August 12 elections, for both constituency and local government in Kabwe this morning, Mrs. Wina said the country has committed itself to upholding the democratic tenets of governance.

Mrs Wina said Zambia should pride itself for the stance the forefathers took of uniting people under the one Zambia one Nation motto.

” It was not easy during the colonial time, the country was divided into tribes which came into urban centres. That’s why the late Kenneth Kaunda came up with the idea of unifying us as a country,” she said.

And the Vice president has encouraged the Patriotic Front members to be reporting the perpetrators of violence.

Mrs. Wina said she has observed that PF members always take a back sit in reporting violence and its perpetrators.

” Let us report violence acts to election conflict management committees so that we take account of what happened during the campaign. It is very important for the government to know what is going on during and after elections,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bwacha Constituency Parliamentary candidate, Sydney Mushanga said the party has worked well since the inception of campaigns.

Mr. Mushanga thanked government for the support rendered to the Parliamentary and local government aspiring candidates during the campaign period and assured PF victory in the fourth coming elections.

Chief Simamba castigates people who took part in the privatization exercise in the late 90s.

28

Chief Simamba of Siavonga District has castigated those who took part in the privatization exercise in the late 90’s.

Speaking when the PF Presidential running mate Professor Nkandu Luo paid a courtesy call on him at his palace Chief Simamba said a few unpatriotic Zambians enriched themselves and left a lot of Zambians in misery

He said the architects of privatization did not study to see whether it was workable or not.

“There is no way you can sell national assets to foreigners. A lot of Zambians were left in misery because the privatization exercise was badly implemented. They did not study whether the exercise was workable or not,” Chief Simamba said.

“It’s only Zambians who can develop this country and we need to make Zambia a better place. Let’s work as a team and develop Zambia,” he said.

And the traditional leader called on Zambians to put politics aside and focus on development. He said politics cannot exist without development. Chief Simamba said as a traditional leader he has put development as a top priority because he wants to see an improvement in the lives of his people.

“Southern province is a province for all the 73 tribes and every Zambian is free to come and settle and invest here. As Zambians let’s put politics aside and focus on development. Politics will not exist without development and development is my first priority,” Chief Simamba said.

“A lot of development has taken place here in Siavonga. We had no electricity but this time we have and companies are coming up. I want to leave a legacy and make a difference in my chiefdom hence my desire to work with the Government of the day,” the traditional leader said.

PF Presidential running mate Professor Nkandu Luo

And PF Presidential running mate Professor Nkandu Luo said the major focus of the Patriotic Front is to develop Zambia. Professor Luo said Zambians should continue with the PF because it is the only party with a tested leadership, adding voting for the opposition party will take the country backward.

“We have laid a strong foundation in infrastructure development in agriculture, energy and people are seeing the fruits. We have a tested Government in place and it is time for our wealth to be enjoyed by Zambians. We will continue deliver,” Professor Luo said.

“Change in the early 90’s was not premised on research.Voting for UPND will take the country backwards because all national assets will be in the hands of foreigners. We can only develop if the assets are in the hands of Zambians, otherwise we will always remain spectators,” She said.

” Let’s not experiment with leadership, our friends, the UPND got 100 vehicles from their funders in exchange for national assets should they win the elections, ” Professor Luo said.

I Survived the Corona Virus in Zambia, I have lived with the Survivor’s Guilt

21

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D. Emeritus Professor of Sociology

I was having the best time of my life for five months at the Mwizenge Sustainable Model Village in Chongwe in rural Lusaka the Capital City of Zambia in Southern Africa. I was living a full life with about 15 men and women every day in the African wilderness finally doing the research work I have loved and craved for all my forty years of working life since I was a Research Fellow at the then Institute of African Studies of the University of Zambia in 1977.

I woke up early that morning in Chongwe in June as usual and had my breakfast of large slices of juicy red tomatoes on brown bread with hot black tea. At 7.25am I suddenly felt so awful, ill and weak in my entire body that I intuitively knew I had to call a taxi to urgently take me to the Clinic in Chongwe 16 miles or 27 Kms away. I felt so weak I could not carry my 30lb or 13.60Kg backpack. Instead, I asked one of the young men village residents, to carry my backpack to the taxi. He looked so puzzled at me that even he realized something was seriously wrong – village residents knew I refused help and always carried my own heavy large backpack and often walked the 5 Kms to the main road.

The young doctor at the Chongwe private clinic said I had a bacterial infection and gave me antibiotics. I went back home and spent a night in utter misery of sickness of fever so high that sweat-drenched my bedsheets. My brother decided we should travel 41miles or 67 kms to Lusaka to South Point Hospital where the doctors had access to cutting edge medical lab technology. The battery of tests revealed I had such serious case of malaria that I had to be hospitalized and admitted immediately. The experienced nurses in the small ten-bed hospital ward immediately frantically started to administer the drips for the 3 bags of fluids since I was dangerously dehydrated. The expensive cocktail of doses of intravenous malaria drug courses were quickly administered. Two days later I was discharged feeling great. I went back to my hut in the model village in Chongwe.

A few days later I went back to the South Point Hospital for a medical review where the medical staff warmly welcomed me. I had no idea something was going to happen that would drastically change my life forever. The doctor said my lab tests showed the malaria parasite was still there. They would treat it with yet another round of the cocktail of intravenous drugs. This time I would be an outpatient. The doctor casually suggested I get the rapid Corona Virus test. When the test results came back, I will never forget that moment, the doctor very casually told me:

“Your Corona Virus test came out positive,” he looked at me. “How are you feeling? Any shortness of breath?”

“I feel fine,” shrugging my shoulders. “I have been wearing a mask all the time. I have a small cough; nothing serious.”

“You must be one of those asymptomatic Corona Virus people.”

The doctor gave me Corona Virus prescription drugs that I was to take for 10 days. I was staying at a lodge. I took my first dose. That night my whole body broke up into hives and rushes. I could not sleep. I badly wanted to scratch all over my body. My fever was drenching my bed covers with sweat every night. My aunt and uncle who used to live in the City of Lusaka passed away several years ago. My nearest relatives were 372 miles or 600kms away in the remote Eastern Province in Lundazi district. My wife and children were 10,000 miles or 16,000 Kms away in Bridgewater in the United States. I would fight this battle alone in a lodge.

When Derrick Chauvin the white police officer had his knee on Gorge Floyd’s neck for nine minutes in the United States, George knew he was going to die. He cried for his mother. During the worst times of my Corona Virus illness, I cried for my late mother who passed in 2018. When I was young, my mother once said: “There are times my son in your life when you will be alone and suffering very far away from home. You will have to be strong. and pray to God. Other kind people will help you.”

My mouth felt so bad that the sight and thought of eating food felt disgusting. I lost my sense of taste and smell of food. My 35-year-old taxi driver Mulenga who said he had also been sick and recovering from the Corona Virus became my inspiration. “Ba Shikuru (old man) you will be alright” he kept encouraging and reassuring me every day as the battle continued.

The hospital could not issue me the international Corona Virus travel certificate yet as my Corona Virus test was still positive so I could not fly back home to the United States even after 10 days of taking medications. I was depressed. Would I ever fly back home any time soon?

Slowly I began to eat. I first ate nshima with lumanda delele. One day, the hospital issued my international Corona Virus travel certificate as the test was finally negative. After 17 hours of grueling flying, the massive plane landed at Dulles Airport in the United States. When I emerged at the international arrival lounge, my tall mask less son was waiting:

“Welcome home Dad!” He had had both vaccinations. I was so happy.

I have lived with the survivor’s guilt. I was one of the lucky ones. I did not need a Corona Virus hospital bed and a ventilator. People are dying of the virus in Lusaka and among 17 million Zambians. But I was able to fly away. There is lots of suffering and death from the dangerous Corona Virus among my 17 million fellow Zambians.

Zambia commits to supporting the national education sector

5

Zambia has committed to supporting the national education sector by protecting and increasing the share of the national budget dedicated to education towards the global 20 percent benchmark.

According to a press statement released to the media by Abigail Chaponda, the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambia High Commission in the United Kingdom,
Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary, Jabbin Mulwanda made the commitment in a video, during a two-day Global Partnership for Education (GPE) summit held in South-West London.

“The Republic of Zambia is committed to supporting our national education sector by protecting and increasing the share of the national budget dedicated to Education towards the global 20% benchmark. The education shares in 2021 was 11.8 percent, in 2022, it will be at 13.19 percent and by 2023, we commit to increasing this by 14.25 percent. These projections are aligned to the country’s medium term expenditure framework,” he said.

The Summit was attended by a host of developing world leaders and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK had pledged £430 million last month to the global partnership for education (GPE) in the face of “difficult financial circumstances” after the coronavirus pandemic.

GPE has launched an ambitious financing campaign to raise at least US $5 billion over 5 years to change children’s lives through education. The funds will help transform education systems in up to 90 countries and territories, which are home to more than 1 billion children and more than 80% of the world’s out-of-school children. An equally important campaign goal is to ensure that domestic education expenditure is protected.

Fully-funded, GPE will leverage the partnerships and mobilize the resources needed to enable 175 million girls and boys to learn, reach 140 million more students with professionally trained teachers, enroll 88 million more children in school – including 46 million more girls – and help governments save $16 billion through more efficient spending.

GPE calls on countries to prioritize, protect and increase domestic financing towards the global benchmark of 20% of total public expenditure to leave no one behind and mitigate potential for huge losses in human capital.

GPE is also calling on countries to ensure education budgets are more equitable, allocated and spent to reach the most marginalized, and efficient, every dollar spent goes as far as possible to improve learning.

The Verification Process of Ballot Papers for the August 12, 2021 General Elections is now Complete

15

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has completed the verification process of ballot papers for the August 12, 2021 general elections.

ECZ Acting Chief Electoral Officer, Royd Katongo said the Commission invited various political parties, Civil Society Organisations, the media among other stakeholders to witness the process.

Mr. Katongo was speaking during the verification process of ballot papersat the ECZ Warehouse in Silverest of Chongwe District,

He said the process is meant to verify and ensure that all the necessary documents for the August 12, 2021 elections are in the boxes before being distributed to other provinces.

Mr. Katongo stated that they only sampled ballot papers from one polling station from each of the 10 provinces due to nature of how they were packed.

He explained that the ballot papers have been packed in such a way that all documents for a particular constituency have been put in one pallet.

“The ballot papers have been packed per constituency, meaning that all the polling stations for a particular constituency, have been packed in a particular pallet. So the stakeholders together with ECZ have agreed to sample one box from a pallet of their choice from all the provinces,” Mr. Katongo indicated.

He further explained that each box for particular polling station, has ballot papers for all the four elections types which includes presidential, National Assembly, Mayoral or Chairperson as well as Councillor.

Mr. Katongo added that other materials include posters, Gen.20 and a list of registered voters for a specific polling station among the documents being checked.

And ECZ Vice Chairperson, Emily Sikazwe was happy that the stakeholders were satisfied with the materials received.

Ms Sikazwe said the Commission had done its part of availing the ballot papers, hence tasked political parties to ensure that they enhance voter education to avoid voter apathy.

“We are very grateful to you for undergoing this process to your satisfaction, we are partners in this and together we can make our elections credible,” Ms. Sikazwe stated.

The verification process at the ECZ warehouse has since been completed and the Commission, is expected to start distributing the ballot papers to other parts of the country by next week.

Fashion Makes Winning League Start at Glasgow Rangers

0

Chipolopolo striker Fashion Sakala on Saturday afternoon made a modest but winning start on his competitive debut for Glasgow Rangers who kicked-off their Scottish Premiership title defence with a home victory.

Rangers beat visiting Livingston 3-0 at Ibrox to make a flying start to their league campaign.

Fashion started the match but played a very quiet role before he was substituted in the second half.

His only great opportunity came in the 28th minute from close-range that was easily read by Livingston’s Polish goalkeeper Maksymillian Stryjek.

His attempt came after Rangers had taken the lead in the 8th minute through Ianis Hagi that saw the hosts take a 1-0 halftime lead.

Fashion also had a brief moment under the spotlight on the stroke of halftime when he made galloping run wide on the left but his cross was easily collected by Stryjek.

He then made way for Kemar Roofe in the 70th minute who scored Rangers’ final goal in stoppage time after Scott Write scored the second goal in the 78th minute.

Meanwhile, Fashion will get his first taste of UEFA Champions League action in a Rangers shirt this Tuesday when they travel to Sweden to play Malmo in a third round, first leg tie.

ECZ should disqualify UPND Parliamentary Candidate for Kanyama Constituency for perpetrating violence-Ntewewe

Democracy and Motherland Defenders Coalition (DMDC) has called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to disqualify UPND Parliamentary Candidate for Kanyama Constituency for perpetrating violence.
This comes following the murder of two members of the Patriotic Front (PF) by thugs believed to be UPND cadres.

Andrew Ntewewe, who is also Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) president said during a briefing in Lusaka today that the banning of campaigns by the Commission if not enough to curb violence.

“We call on ECZ to disqualify candidates where violence is taking place. It is sad that ECZ would just ban campaigns in Nkeyema and Sioma without any appropriate action being taken,” he said.
“Today, we have woken up to the gruesome murders for PF members in Kanyama Constituency. These individuals were seated at their campsite and unfortunately, they were murdered in cold blood. We wonder what ECZ is going to say today given the escalated levels of violence.“

Mr Ntewewe further mentioned that criminals behind the said murders must be brought to book without further delay. He said ECZ cannot sit back and simply ban campaigns and watch while citizens are being killed in cold blood.

“But for us we want to appeal to ECZ and put it on recorded that is it important that criminals of these gruesome murders must be brought to book without any further delay and that candidates who have turned themselves into warlords, threatening the lives of our citizens, must be disqualified,” he said.

“So we call on ECZ directly to disqualify the Kanyama UPND candidate. We cannot sit back and talk about violence and simply condemn violence without any action. ECZ cannot sit back and simply ban campaigns and watch while citizens are being killed in cold blood, that is unacceptable.”

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Member of Central Committee (MCC) Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) Member of Central Committee (MCC) Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba

Meanwhile, PF Member of Central Committee (MCC) Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba is disappointed with United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema for not condemning the brutal murder of two PF cadres by UPND cadres in Lusaka’s Kanyama township.

The PF cadres were murdered in cold blood using axes and machetes at a command centre in Ward 13 of Kanyama Constituency in Lusaka.

Mr Mwamba said it was unfortunate that Mr Hichilema is on record as having encouraged his supporters to use violence as a guise of defending themselves.

Sensing an imminent sixth election loss in the forthcoming general elections , Mr Hichilema’s supporters have been instructed to create chaos and havoc through indiscriminate attacks and macabre killings of innocent citizens,Mr Mwamba alleged.

Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch have condemned Mr Hichilema and his leadership for not raising concerns among its flock.

Mr Mwamba pointed out that the UPND is known for shifting the blame on PF and other opposition political have clearly exposed their inadequacies politically and administratively.

PF must stop abusing the Inspector General of Police-UPND

United Party for National Development(UPND) Chairman Gilbert Liswaniso has advised the Patriotic Front to stop abusing the Inspector General of Police on the democratic change of government people want.
And Mr Liswaniso has continued to implore the UPND youths to continue mobilising the party and protect votes together with the citizens.

At a mobilisation meeting held in Matero, Friday, he said it is unfair that the police has continued to distract the UPND presidential alliance candidate Hakainde Hichilema’s national wide face mask distribution.

“PF SG Davies Mwila and Edgar Lungu stop abusing your colleague the IG, teargassing innocent citizens and distracting HH’s national wide distribution of face masks are unfair.
Here in Matero the police should know that people want change.

They swiftly came to listen to us the government in waiting on building and reuniting Zambia but it is too late they decided years back to support HH and UPND .

Let all political parties continue interacting with the people”A straight talking Liswaniso said.

The UPND National Youth Chairman has predicted more teargassing on innocent citizens by the police but encouraged them not to be afraid.

“Do not be afraid to safeguard change, Police is using maximum force to discourage you know that PF is under pressure and using them not to listen to the UPND alliance message of peace, unity and economic turn around as such remain calm” he said.

And Mr Liswaniso has urged all Zambians to turn up in large numbers on 12 th August 2021 to vote for Hakainde Hichilema and all the UPND alliance candidates.

“Limbani, be strong and remain united with peace as always guided by our peaceful president Hakainde Hichilema.

The UPND alliance is peaceful and as such we shall continue to maintain peace”Mr Liswaniso said.

Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit incurring huge costs in transporting Stranded cadres

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit DMMU says the unit is incurring a huge cost of transporting political party cadres who are left behind after party events.

DMMU National Coordinator, Chanda Kabwe disclosed that the trend of transporting cadres has proved to be a huge cost to DMMU as cadres are left stranded after the events.

Mr. Chanda has called on political parties to desist from ferrying cadres from one district to the other if they have no means of taking them back.

“The government through DMMU is compelled to transport stranded cadres back to their various districts after being used and left stranded by mostly the opposition political parties,” he said.

He said political parties should be responsible enough to take care of their cadres after their political activities as opposed to what has been happening where cadres are left stranded with no food and transport.

Mr. Kabwe mentioned incidents such as the nominations of Presidential candidates for the August 2021 elections where the DMMU repatriated over 100 cadres to Northwestern Province after they were left stranded by a named party leader and the recent incident in Chipata where the Unit has had to make arrangements to repatriate cadres to various districts of Eastern Province after they were left stranded.

He has since directed Eastern Province DMMU Regional Coordinator and Chipata District Commissioner who is the District Disaster Management Committee Chairperson to identify where the stranded cadres hail from and the cost implication for their repatriation.

Mr. Kabwe has since appealed to members of the public not to fall prey to political parties whose aim is to use them to show popularity and later dump them on the streets.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kabwe has expressed regret at the political violence which led to the demise of two alleged Patriotic Front (PF) cadres in Lusaka’s Kanyama Township, allegedly murdered by cadres from a named opposition political party saying government will render support to the two families.

This was contained in a statement issued in Lusaka today by Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit Senior Communications Officer, Mathews Musukwa.

Police night raid nets 43 party cadres and recover machetes, knives, as well as some various illicit drugs

Forty-three people have been apprehended, after police raids last night in various parts of Lusaka, following yesterday’s killing of two people in Kanyama, during rival political party cadres clash.

Police have also apprehended 4 suspects, in connection with the Kanyama murder case, in which 2 male adults, aged between 20 and 30, were killed, during the violent political clash. During the raid, police also recovered various offensive weapons, among them machetes and knives, as well as some various illicit drugs.

Lusaka Province Police Commissioner, Luckson Sakala has confirmed last night’s police operation, saying the apprehended suspects include 3 females and 1 male, who was found in a military uniform.

Mr. Sakala has also confirmed the apprehending of the 4 suspects, in connection with the Kanyama murder, who he says are members of a named political party. He has explained that earlier yesterday, the political rival groups clashed around 16.30 hours in Kanyama’s Mbasela area, during which the two deceased were hacked to death.

Speaking today, when he addressed the media, Mr. Sakala has said that 2 of the murder suspects were apprehended by members of the public and the other 2 by police, who rushed to the scene. Mr. Sakala has since warned against political violence, saying police will continue conducting operations to maintain law and order.

Yesterday, two Patriotic Front Members in Lusaka’s Kanyama Township were allegedly murdered by suspected UPND cadres after sustaining multiple deep cuts. Deputy Inspector General of Police Charity Katanga disclosed to ZNBC News last evening that the two were murdered in their camp as they prepared lunch .

Mrs. Katanga said that Police rushed to the scene after reports of a clash between PF and UPND to disperse the cadres. She has identified the deceased as Danny and Teddy both aged between 20 and 30.

Mrs. Katanga says the police have since arrested 4 UPND suspects for the murder of which 2 are in hospital after the public descended on them while 2 are in police custody. Those arrested include Geoffrey Chikoti, Samson Mumba, Namushi Chikunona and Francis Chabala.

Mrs. Katanga explained that the police will ensure that all those behind any form of violence are held accountable for their action.

And, Mrs. Katanga said it is unfortunate that some political parties continue to engage in forms of violence. She has since advised political parties to tame their cadres so that such incidences are not recorded.
