Rally behind the candidature of UPND Alliance Presidential candidate, Hakainde Hichilema-Mwaliteta

UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson, Obvious Mwaliteta has called on the people of Kafue town to rally behind the candidature of UPND Alliance Presidential candidate, Hakainde Hichilema in the forthcoming elections.

Zambia goes to the polls on 12th August to elect her 7th Republican President.

Speaking when drumming up support for the UPND Kafue parliamentary candidate, Mirriam Chonya and her town Council, Buumba Malambo in Mungu Ward yesterday, Mr Mwaliteta stated that voting for the UPND in the forthcoming elections would ensure development in the town.

He stressed that resuscitating defunct state parastatals in Kafue town was top of the UPND’s development agenda, adding that Mr Hichilema had a well-thought-out plan on how to develop the area.

He noted that the PF’s failure to tap into the town’s economic potential has led to mass unemployment and untold misery amongst the people of Kafue.

Chipolopolo at COSAFA Cup Crossroad

2

Defending champions Chipolopolo face Botswana today in a last ditch effort to save their fading interests in the 2021 COSAFA Cup.

Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s side is on the brink of a first round exit as hopes of tying with Zimbabwe with a record-equalling sixth COSAFA Cup title fade.

Zambia are fifth and bottom of  Group A on zero points from two games played and with two matches left to play while Botswana are third and tied on 3 points with fourth placed Lesotho.

Leaders South Africa and second placed Eswatini are level on 6 points from two and three games played respectively.

The top two finishers from Group A and Group B qualify to the semifinals on July 16.

“We are still only theoretically in the tournament and we have two matches ahead of us and we need to win both matches convincingly in order to have any chance of qualifying,” Micho said.

Six points are all Chipolopolo can gather and that too may not be enough with Eswatini and South Africa needing just a draw each to eliminate Zambia from the equation.

Meanwhile, Zambia have been unconvincing even when blessed with their strongest-ever assembled COSAFA side since 2007.

Chipolopolo threw away a one-nil halftime lead to lose 1-0 to Lesotho in their opening Group A game on July 8 before a blunt display on July 10 against Eswatini who beat them 1-0.

That sequence of results saw Chipolopolo for the first time suffer back-to-back defeats at COSAFA.

Expectations were high that Chipolopolo could redeem themselves at COSAFA after their 2022 AFCON qualification failure and a humbling 2021 CHAN quarterfinal exit.

But the salvage job at COSAFA where preliminary stage elimination is looming has so far raised more   questions than answers as September’s 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers loom.

“The Club thanks Mutapa for his professionalism prior to and after he was placed on administrative leave and wishes the coach well in his future endeavours.”

The Kitwe side finished tenth in the Super Division.

DIV 1 PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Makwaza’s Jumulo Kicks Off With Win

Copperbelt champions Jumulo and Quattro Kalumbila have recorded wins on the first day of the FAZ National Division One play-offs being staged in Lusaka this week.

Coach Linos Makwaza’s Jumulo have taken an early lead in Group A after thumping Young Raiders 3-0 at Margaret Mwanakatwe Stadium.

Kunda Mazinga, Tito Ndoli and Kalu Banda contributed a goal each for Jumulo.

North Western side Quattro Kalumbila edged Real Nakonde 2-1 in the opening Group A match.

Jumulo and Quattro are tied at the top on three points each.

The other Group A team Sinazongwe United were on bye on day one.

Meanwhile, draws characterised Group B on day one as Lusaka champions Young Buffaloes were held to a goalless stalemate by Luapula outfits ZNS Luamfumu at Crested Crane Academy Grounds.

Malalo Police drew 2-2 with Luena Buffaloes in the other Group B match at Crested Crane Academy Grounds.

Sinda United, who are in Group B, were on bye on Monday.

HH, 5 others apply for judgment in default of defence against state in false imprisonment suit

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and five others have asked the Lusaka High Court to enter judgement in default against the state for failing to enter defense and appearance in a matter where they have sued it demanding compensation for false imprisonment.

They prayed that their reliefs be granted as the state has not shown interest to defend the matter.

The six were falsely imprisoned on allegations that they committed treason when Mr. Hichilema’s convoy allegedly failed to give way to President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade on the Mongu-Limulunga road in April 2017.

According to a notice dated July, 2021, judge Yangailo indicated that she would strike out the matter from the active cause list within seven days if Mr. Hichilema and others do not take any step.

In their affidavit in support of summons for leave to enter judgement in default, the plaintiffs said on May 13, their lawyer Kamuwanga Phiri served the state a letter enclosing writ of summons, statement of claim, list of documents, list of witnesses and copies of the letter of demand.

They said despite being served with the said originating process, the state has neither entered appearance nor filed its defense.

“Leave of this honourable court to enter judgement in default of appearance and defence ought to be obtained before filing the same. The intended judgement in default of appearance and defence is ready to be filed if this application is granted. Need has now arisen to make this application for leave to enter judgement in default of appearance and defence,” said Mr. Hichilema and others.

In this matter, Mr Hichilema, Hamusonde Hamaleka, Pretorius Haloba, Wallace Chakawa, Laston Mulilanduba and Muleya Hachinda want the Lusaka High Court to compel the state to indemnify them damages equivalent in value to the money and personal belongings lost when they were apprehended at Mr. Hichilema’s home in new Kasama.

Mr Hichilema is seeking remuneration for the money he lost and property that was looted, damaged and destroyed at his home four years ago during the unlawful operation to arrest him on April 10 and 11, 2017.

Mr. Hichilema and his aides further want recompense for unlawful detention, unlawful prosecution, assault and battery, special damages for loss of income during the entire period of their incarceration, and damages for the injury.

They also want damages for trespassing, loss of use of motor vehicle a Toyota hilux ALZ 2757 and ALZ 2710 for 34 days when they were in detention among other reliefs.

Hichilema, Hamaleka, Chakawa, Mulilabduba and Hachinda stated that they were jointly charged with treason, disobeying lawful orders and statutory duty while Haloba was not told the reason for his detention.

The complainants said charges of disobeying lawful and statutory orders were dropped by the state by way of nolle prosequi between May and June 2017.

“On August 14, 2017 the state maliciously laid an amended information before the High Court against the plaintiffs of treason contrary to section 43(1)(d) of the penal code,” the plaintiffs stated.

“On August 14 the plaintiffs took fresh plea on the charge of treason and all of them denied the charge. On August 16, 2017 the appointed date for commencement of trial, the state terminated proceedings against all the plaintiffs citing Article 180(7)of the Constitution and the plaintiffs were released.”

Hichilema and others contended that their prosecution and the unsanitary and inhuman conditions they were subjected to during their detention subjected them to humiliation and disgrace as well as brought them into ridicule and contempt both in Zambia and internationally.

“The plaintiffs will aver that they were wrongly imprisoned and deprived of their liberty, were maliciously prosecuted, greatly injured in their credit, character, reputation and they suffered considerable mental and body pain, anguish, considerable trouble, inconvenience, anxiety and expense that they have been greatly injured in their business and they have suffered loss and damage,” they said.

Hichilema, Hamaleka, Haloba, Chakawa, Mulilanduba and Hachinda said particulars of malice were that the treason charge lacked overt acts as it was not thoroughly investigated.

The complainants added that the admission by the state that the charge of treason was bad at law while insisting to prosecute them was malicious, an abuse of the criminal justice process and injurious on their dignity.

Declare Covid-19 pandemic in Zambia a national disaster-HH

UPND Alliance Presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema has outlined the party’s strategic plan once elected into office.

Mr. Hichilema announced that the Alliance would once ushered into office immediately declare the Covid pandemic a national disaster and create a directorate under the President’s office to bring the pandemic under control.

He observed that the current leadership of the PF government has failed the people of Zambia during the pandemic adding that many vibrant lives have been lost because the government failed to provide decent healthcare.

Mr. Hichilema described as unfortunate that donations towards the covid fight have been misappropriated by those who were tasked to manage the pandemic and allowed it to get to the current level where hospitals are congested with no bed space and people dying in large numbers.

The UPND Alliance presidential candidate was speaking at a Press briefing in Lusaka that was attended by among others Alliance Chairperson who is also Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD) President Charles Milupi, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Felix Mutati and National Democratic Congress President Joseph Akafumba.

The UPND Alliance says it is ready to manage the pandemic in a responsible manner by among others recruiting doctors and nurses who have been either fired or retired so as to ensure all facilities are managed by health experts.

Mr. Hichilema said the new government will further create provincial oxygen supplying industries to ensure that all patients get the required oxygen and are not left to die as has been the case by the PF government.

He added that under the plan, the new government would make use of auditoriums and stadiums to create the necessary bed spaces for patients who are currently being sent home as a result for no bed spaces in medical facilities.

Mr Hichilema said his government would further engage the local leadership and religious leaders at all levels to educate the masses on the importance of vaccinations.

He further noted that there would be mandatory quarantine at ports of entry so as to reduce the infection rates in the country.

And the UPND leader has wondered why the PF government leadership was content with road shows and rallies which are super spreader of covid saying this was a clear demonstration of lack of leadership.

Edith Nawakwi Challenges HH to state his position on Continuation of Zambia as a Christian Nation

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi
Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi
Forum for Democracy and Development FDD Leader Edith Nawakwi has Challenged the opposition UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema to come out in the open and state his position on Zambia continuing to exist as a Christian Nation if he was to be elected.

Mrs Nawakwi said she has never heard the Opposition leader campaign on the declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.

“Never has he pronounced himself whether Zambia would continue to exist as a Christian Nation if he were to be elected during this year’s general election,” she said.

Mrs Nawakwi said this is unlike President Edgar Chagwa Lungu who has continued to preach about the importance of defending the declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.
She said President Edgar Lungu has started building the house of prayer which is commendable.

Mrs Nawakwi said President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s works in the church are visible.

“We see him support all congregations and preaching peace and unity. President Lungu’s presence in the churches is seen,” she added.

He has a heart for the people of Zambia therefore deserves to be re elected as president during this year’s polls.

Meanwhile, Mrs Nawakwi donated 150 bags of mealie meal worth 18 thousand Kwacha to three churches in Matero namely; United Church of Zambia, Anglican Church and the Methodist Church.

She said this is to help with the funerals that have overburdened people in the area as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Mrs Nawakwi further urged the people to adhere to the stipulated health guidelines set by the Ministry of Health.

Government ommissions Mwandi’s Lutaba Mini hospital in Western Province

Vice President Inonge Wina says government seeks to ensure that all citizens in the country have access to affordable and quality health care services.

Speaking when she commissioned Lutaba Mini Hospital in Mwandi district today, Mrs. Wina said government under President Edgar Lungu has placed great emphasis on securing the health and wellbeing of the people of Zambia as one of the key priorities in the development agenda of the country.

“This is in line with the Patriotic Front manifesto which has put effort in ensuring that a healthy population becomes the backbone for a human resource base,” she said.

Mrs. Wina stated that a good human resource base is key in turning the country into a prosperous and middle income nation by 2030 hence the reason government embarked on transforming the health sector.

“We are improving the services in the health sector through constructing and equipping mini hospitals and first level hospitals countrywide,” she said.

The Vice President emphasized that the aim of transforming the health sector is to achieve universal health coverage of taking services closer to the people by shortening the distance that they walk to access health facilities.

She expressed gratitude that the people of Mwandi district have been empowered with a mini hospital, which she said is a clear demonstration of the commitment of the Patriotic Party and government to deliver on the targets outlined in the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP).

“I am glad that this facility will provide basic health services, first level referral services, conducting of minor surgical procedures as well as offering maternal and child health services,” she said.

Mrs. Wina has meanwhile thanked the Barotse Royal Establishment’s (BRE) Mboo Kuta in Mwandi for providing land where the mini hospital has been constructed.

The Vice President also took time to remind the people of Mwandi to remain vigilant and steadfast in adhering to Covid-19 prevention measures, adding that the pandemic is now the biggest threat to the health of the citizens and is spreading rapidly across the country.

And Western Province Medical Health Director Francis Liywali said the newly constructed Lutaba Mini Hospital is a fully fledged hospital that will cater for about 12,000 immediate population.

“I am happy that government came up with the construction of this mini hospital that will help a lot of people that used to walk long distances to access health services,” he said.

Dr. Liywali said the facility will also reduce the high maternal mortality that affected the mothers in the area.

“This facility will also reduce on child mortality and will provide immunization services among others,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Barotse Royal Establishment in Mwandi has appreciated the developmental strides that government has made in all areas.

Representing Mboo Kuta acting Leashimba – Lawrence Sitiboha, said the commissioned Lutaba mini hospital will reduce the many challenges that the people of Lutaba used to face.

The Kuta has since pledged to support the development in the area by ensuring that no one vandalizes the facility.

“We are now counting three mini hospitals in our establishment namely Mulobezi, Katima and Lutaba hence we shall ensure that these facilities are well managed,” he said.

The traditional leaders have meanwhile appealed to aspiring candidates to ensure that there is no record of violence in the district as they conduct campaigns for the August 12, 2021 general elections.

He said the Mboo Kuta has urged all its indunas not to tolerate violence but instead intervene by giving parental guidance whenever political parties differ.

The Arrogance of Insulting a People and Expecting Their Vote

16

By Dr Parkie Mbozi

As a Tonga by birth and Lenje by residence, I wish I didn’t have to be one of those defending the Tonga people from the on-going targeted on-slaught.

However, I am comforted by the words of one wise man by the name of Dr Ludwig Sondashi. When he was minister of Labour in the FTJ Ciluba government, there were complaints that he was appointing people from North Western province, His answer went like, “If I don’t appoint my people, who will?” Fortunately, the whole nation and a people molded by founding statesman Dr Kenneth Kaunda (RIP) have risen to the defense of an innocent people that has been a target of abuse by tactless political amateurs within the Patriotic Front.

Anyhow, the ECZ has suspended PF cadre Chishimba Kambwili for systematically campaigning on tribal lines and for hate speech. This may be viewed (justifiably so) as too little too late on the part of the Commission. However, it is good that at last the ‘referee’ has awoken from the slumber to do just what he needed to be doing all along.

ECZ’s Patrick Nshindano said “the Commission has noted with concern the breach of the electoral code of conduct by Mr. Kambwili’s use of hate speech and holding of campaign rallies despite the guidance provided.” Earlier a number of organizations – had also voiced their concerns over Kambwili’s mission of hate speech, which has the blessings of his party. He has said openly that his mission is to ‘sell’ the PF in this election and his boss – Edgar Lungu – has not disavowed or condemned him.

LAZ said it had “observed, with deep concern, the continued issuance of tribal remarks by politicians as they jostle for support ahead of the upcoming Presidential and General Elections. Former Cabinet Minister and member of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF), Mr. Chishimba Kambwili, for instance, has been captured on video making tribal remarks against Tonga speaking people.”

I proffer that Kambwili;s tirade of hate speech against the people of Southern Province is not an isolated case. Demonisation of ethnic groups that don’t agree with them is in the PF’s DNA. They have done it against the people of North Western province whom its founder Michael Sata once called buttocks. In 2015, way before the 2016 general election, Davies Mwila – then PF Secretary General –insulted the people of Southern province. He refused to apologise and the President refused to admonish or fire him.

Chama was quoted saying, Tongas will never rule the country, unless maybe in 100 years’ time if they multiply themselves since they were polygamous by nature. He uttered these words simply out of hate for Hakainde Hichilema, their political opponent. Chama refused to apologise, Lungu refused to fire him but come 2016 general election, they expected votes from people of southern province. What arrogance!

Later the same year Chama boasted that President Lungu was a very strong person who resisted the pressure to fire him over his Tonga remarks. “President Lungu is the strongest person I have ever met in my lifetime because ine ngabali kolopa kale (I would have been mopped out already). You remember the problems I brought to the President and the party about the Tonga issue? Although I didn’t do it, the media was bombarding and the President was under pressure, but he is such a strong person.”

At a meeting held on 19th July 2015, dubbed Chuungu Chaitwa, to discuss Chama’s remarks, various chiefs called on Lungu to disciple Chama but these calls fell on deaf ears.

Chief Nalubamba of Namwala district said, “my appeal is that I want, on behalf of other chiefs and everybody in Southern Province, the President to discipline the secretary general. If anything, let him be fired so that other people will learn a lesson because if he (President Lungu) does not do that, we’ll have difficulties, as people of Southern Province, working with the government of the day. If the President fires him, we’ll know that he is not for that idea but if he keeps quiet, then we’ll have problems believing him.”

Nalubamba gave very wise and timely advice that, “It is very shallow to insult other tribes just because you are in power. If anything, it does not bring supporters near your party.” He added, “You need these people to be your supporters; whether you like it or not [but] how do you attract them to your party with insults of that nature?”
“The man (Chama) is very shallow indeed and I don’t think he is going to be welcome in Southern Province… Is he sure that the entire Southern Province is anti-PF? They have got even an MP in Livingstone (Evans Lawrence); he didn’t vote for himself and they have got a councillor in Namwala, did he vote for himself?”, added Nalubamba,
Chief Chipepo said, “We called some Bemba chiefs about this issue but they said they don’t have any idea where this hatred is coming from. He didn’t insult (Tonga) politicians but he is insulting Tonga chiefs because they are the custodians of the people of Southern Province.” He added, “He has insulted the Bantu Botatwe and he is not fit to be a leader.”

In an article titled “Not Too Late for Davies the Charmer”, Lusaka lawyer Sakwiba Sikota, a known PF supporter, wrote, “It would be nice for the President His Excellency Edgar Lungu to take the role of Head Teacher and try to tutor Davies Chama. If Davies proves to be slow to learn or simply headstrong and stubborn, Head Teacher Lungu could apply some corporal punishment on naughty Davies. I know the law was changed and outlawed corporal punishment but there is always an exception to the rule.”
Despite all these calls, Chama survived and was rewarded with the Presidential nomination of Member of Parliament and subsequently appointed Minister of Defence, one of the top most cabinet portfolios. Kambwili, then chief Government Spokesperson, arrogantly told the Southern province chiefs that Chama had refused to apologise so they should kill him if they wanted.

I said earlier that Kambwili’s recent crusade against the Tonga people is not new and an isolated case. On 25th July 2016, while campaigning at Kabundi ground in Chingola, the same Kambwili was on a warpath telling the crowd that “Tongas in Southern Province only vote for UPND and tribesman Hichilema with a view to being ruled by a Tonga.” At a campaign meeting during the Chilubi by-election in February 2020, Nkandu Luo, now Lungu’s running mate, told voters that there was no way a Tonga from Monze would come to ‘pyana’(replace) her, a Bisa. These comments were indirectly targeted at the UPND candidate, a local, but was in apparent reference to Hichilema the UPND leader who hails from Monze. Hachilema was not even on the ballot. That’s as bad as it can be.

The video is available on: https://www.zambianobserver.com/video-nkandu-luo-joins-tribal-hatred-against-tongas/

On 27th July 2019 Lungu said, “We will one day have a Tonga President but certainly not the current aspirant.” A Richard Waga answered back: “President Edgar Lungu’s sentiment that one day a Tonga will be president but not UPND President Hakainde Hichilema are condescending, tribal and divisive. He is telling Zambians that tribe is a factor when choosing leaders. He is telling Zambians the electoral system is not open enough for anyone to aspire for office. He is confirming the tribal narrative we hear among some PF flunkies who hate the idea of a Tonga president.”

That has been the hallmark of the PF. The chiefs and other commentators called Chama and his likes ‘shallow’, ‘sick’ etc. I call them tackles, clueless, statesman-less politicians, who have no clue that when you target to victimize a people, they coalesce as a survival strategy. They have no clue how to woo voters other than by force. Statesmen before them listened to regions and managed to pull the nation together even after a divisive election. They paddled through political storms and signed accords to pull the country together under One Zambia One Nation.

So says the bible, ‘you shall know them by their actions.” Indeed we have known their true colours through their actions in appointments and allocation of opportunities. After falling out with the PF in 2016 Kambwili went to Southern province to apologise. It’s now clear it was a fake apology. It is in their DNA. They can’t even manage to pretend.
For the information of those without capacity to read political history, though some call themselves ‘Dr’ Chakuti, Tonga’s are not tribal nor selfish. In 1959 Mainza Choma founded UNIP but ceded power to Kenneth Kaunda once he was released from jail. In 1953 ‘Old Major’ Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula and his ANC had to team up with Kaunda;s UNIP to defeat colonial party and win our independence. In 1972 Nkumbula again ceded power and signed the unity accord for a one party state even though he didn’t have to. He didn’t even take any post in the unified UNIP government. That is how the fierce rivalry between Kaunda and Simon Kapwepwe, whose base was Bembaland, eased. Legend also has it that when the freedom fighters were invited to London to negotiate our independence, Southerners sold their cattle to make the trip possible.

In 1991 Southern Province gave Frederick Chiluba, a Bemba, 100%. Again 1996, even with his incarceration of Dean Mungomba and Princess Nakatindi Wina et al and, worse, barring of Dr Kaunda from standing, Southern Province still gave Chiluba another 100%. Further, in 2001, 2006 and even 2011, there were other Tonga presidential candidates, the likes of Shamapande, Magande, etc, but the non-Tonga – Rupiah Banda and Michael Sata, still got better votes than these Tonga candidates.

So, if the Tongas and their allies decide to have a share ofthe political cakes, what’s wrong with that? And if the Southerners and their allies see quality in candidates other than yours, what’s wrong with that? The same hypocrites’ keep saying Anderson Mazoka was the best man for the job in 2001 but fall shot to state which regions failed him. Did you hear the Tongas and their allies accuse certain regions of tribalism? Before blaming people’s choices, answer in honest, who had better credentials and personal accomplishments for the job between Lungu and Hichilema in 2015, 2016 and even now?

Finally at a personal level, come and see whom we live with, whom our loved ones are, whom we do business with, whom we employ on our farms, homes and businesses, come and see whom we have children with, whom our friends are, etc. HOW DARE YOU. By the way, why have you failed to publicize your commission’s report on voting patterns?

President Lungu urged to deploy soldiers ahead of 12 August Election

38

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has been urged to deploy the Zambia Army in hotspot areas of Mandevu, Kanyama and Chawama Constituency if violence is to end.

Speaking after a convoy of UPND cadres attacked him and other roadusers along Kasangula Road on Monday afternoon, Governance Activist Isaac Mwanza said it has become apparent that the Zambia Police Service has failed to deal with violence and will not manage to save lives ahead of 2021 elections.

Mr Mwanza who was in the vehicle Registration No. ALD 8901 driven by Mr Bebe with 2 other passengers was caught up in the violent attacks near Petroda Filling Station on Kasangula Road and was among the people and motorists that have been attacked and their vehicles damaged.

Mr Mwanza who recently joined the Patriotic Front has been a target of attacks by UPND Members.

Mr Mwanza was once attacked at the Supreme Court building by UPND cadres who were in the company of Sylvia Masebo but was also attacked after leaving a programme at Radio Phoenix in Lusaka.

While Mr Mwanza called on Police to respond to violent attacks that have been unleashed by the Opposition UPND Youths, he said the Zambia Police appear to be powerless to prevent the violence during this election.

“President Lungu must act not to save the lives of innocent people from the barbaric behaviour from cadres. He must not place the trust on the police to keep peace because the violence going on is bigger than what the Police can handle,” he said.

Mr Mwanza said the peace accords being signed by parties will achieve nothing and are just a waste of time as these cadres are being armed by the same leaders who are signing peace agreements.

FRA pays out K2.4 m to south farmers

11

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has so far bought 803.55 metric tonnes of white maize and paid out more than K2.4 million to small scale farmers who supplied the commodity in region ‘B’ comprising six districts of Southern province.

In a telephone interview today, Region ‘B’ Marketing Manager Stephen Liato told ZANIS that the agency expects to buy a total of 21,450 metric tonnes of white maize from 74 satellite depots in Mazabuka, Monze, Namwala, Pemba, Gwembe and Chikankata districts.

Mr. Liato however said the FRA has not yet started buying maize in Pemba because the moisture content is still at about 14 per cent.

He explained that the 12.5 percent maize moisture content was one of the parametres that FRA uses to buy maize from farmers to ensure safe storage.

For Monze district, Mr. Liato explained that the FRA expects to purchase 5,500 metric tonnes of white maize in 20 satellite depots.

“So far the agency has bought 803.5 metric tonnes, of white maize and paid a total of K2, 410,650 million to small scale farmers who supplied the commodity and we have also bought 27.15 metric tonnes of soya beans worth K271, 500 from farmers in the entire region B,” he explained.

He has since advised farmers in districts such as Pemba where the maize moisture content was still above the recommended 12.5 per cent to expose their grain to the sun in order to expedite the drying process.

Mr. Liato has meanwhile assured farmers that the payment process has been enhanced adding that all farmers who supplied grain to the agency will get their dues within five days.

“The delays experienced in payments to farmers who supplied the commodity in the previous marketing seasons is a thing of the past as we are now able to process payments between two and five days which is almost tantamount to giving farmers cash on delivery,” he said.

But Monze Farmers’ Cooperative chairperson Edward Mudenda has urged the FRA to always consult local stakeholders (small scale farmers) when coming up with the floor price of maize so as to reach a win-win situation.

Mr. Mudenda argued that the prices of inputs such as fertiliser keep escalating without a corresponding considerable increase in maize prices.

He said the current situation makes farmers unable to meet production costs.

He has since appealed to the government to seriously look into the prices of fertiliser and also consult widely among small scale farmers on the maize floor price.

“Right now as I speak to you the price of fertiliser is K800 and yet we expect to sell our maize at K150 per 50 kilogramme bag of maize. My humble appeal is for the government to seriously look at the prices of inputs as well as consult widely among small scale farmers to come up with a reasonable grain floor price,” he said.

PF land policy will benefit the church-Kapata

Patriotic Front presidential running-mate deputy campaign manager, Jean Kapata says the ruling party has developed a robust land policy to empower Zambians, including churches to easily acquire land and obtain title deeds for their property.

Ms. Kapata says through the PF initiated land policy, churches will be able to obtain title deeds which they can use as collateral to access finance to venture into various income generating activities.

She said this will help churches to improve the lives of congregants and the needy people in society.

She was speaking when she met members of the clergy in Kapiri Mposhi today.

Ms. Kapata said the national land titling programme will empower churches to obtain loan facilities from financial institutions against their church buildings because the PF government and President Edgar Lungu regard land as a prerequisite to national economic development and wealth creation for citizens.

The former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources said from 1964, Zambia has never had a land policy to alienate land and systematically empower citizens with title deeds.

“When I was Minister of Lands, President Lungu tasked me to develop a National Land Policy and to commence the systematic National Land Titling Programme through which over 53,000 title deeds were issued by the end of 2020,” Ms. Kapata said.

Ms Kapata explained that in its 2021-2026 manifesto, the PF intends to produce and issue over four million certificates of title to public and private land owners.

“The National Land Titling Programme is empowerment for all of us … for those who want to do business, churches inclusive, they can borrow using their property,” Ms. Kapata said.

And Ms. Kapata has challenged the church to educate their congregants on the importance of voting in order to reduce voter apathy in the August 12, 2021 general elections.

Ms. Kapata also urged the clergy to guide their congregants on how to vote and ticking on the ballot for their votes to count.

“The problem that we have in this country is that people don’t come out to vote so you as the clergy you have the power to stand on the pulpit and tell people to go and vote on the 12th of August,” Ms. Kapata said.

She further urged the church to continue praying for the country and providing guidance for Zambia to hold peaceful elections.

“President Lungu is building a house according to the Bible. He went further to building a national place of worship and as the clergy, we need to pray and provide guidance for the country and its leadership as we head for elections,” she said.

And PF presidential running-mate campaign team member, Sensio Banda has implored the church to guard against the removal of the clause on the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation.

Mr. Banda charged that some leaders of certain political parties contesting the August polls were planning to remove the Christian Nation declaration from the constitution and declare Zambia as a secular state if elected to form government.

The former Kasenengwa Member of Parliament urged the church to support President Lungu as he had vowed to maintain the declaration.

“President Lungu reaffirmed the Christian nation values and principles by enshrining them in the constitution cognisant of the fact that nothing happens unless God says so, meaning that God should be at the centre of our lives,” Mr. Banda said.

And Kapiri Mposhi District Ministers’ Fellowship Chairman Japheth Msoni has re-affirmed the church’s commitment to preach peace, unity and love ahead of the 2021 general elections.

“The Church in Kapiri Mposhi condemns violence, hate speech and tribal remarks that may plunge the country into chaos. Political parties should conduct peaceful campaigns,” Bishop Msoni said.

He has since called on government to provide a peaceful platform during campaigns and elections for the August 12 polls.

KK’s death reminded Zambians about ‘One Zambia, One Nation ‘ motto-Lungu

President Edgar Lungu says the death of first republican President Kenneth Kaunda has reminded Zambian citizens about the importance of the ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ motto.

President Lungu said unfortunately, Dr. Kaunda’s death came at a time when every citizen needed to reflect on the importance of oneness.

Dr. Lungu said this when he met six traditional leaders from Mwinilunga district in Northwestern province today.

Meanwhile, President Lungu has asked traditional leaders in the area to encourage their subjects to choose leaders who have the interests of the people above self.

“Choose responsible people who will speak for your needs not their bellies,” he said.

President Lungu said the region has seen less development because of allegedly choosing leaders who are antagonistic.

He alleged that most representatives of the people in the region have not been willing to work with the government but have instead been opposing everything government does.

And speaking on behalf of other chiefs, senior chief Sailunga thanked the President for the constant visits to the district.

Senior chief Sailunga said President Lungu is the only head of state who has visited the district more times.

He said traditional leaders in the area will reciprocate the gesture by supporting Dr. Lungu.

“As royal highnesses in this district we will support you. May God bless you,” he said.

The traditional leaders however presented some challenges their chiefdoms are faced with.

Among the challenges are the poor road network, damaged bridges and lack of internet facilities.

And senior chief Kanong’esha praised President Lungu for his good leadership.

He further commended the President for constructing a fruit processing plant which he said has already started yielding results through job creation.

The Head of State, who is in the province for a two-day working visit, also toured the local market before holding a meeting with party officials.

President Lungu calls for innovative leaders

President Edgar Lungu has called on the electorate in Ikelenge district to elect leaders that will push the development agenda in the district.

President Lungu says leaders such as Members of Parliament should spearhead development in their constituencies by engaging relevant departments and ensure that projects are completed.

“Elect leaders that will spearhead your development agenda”, President Lungu said.

ZANIS reports that the Republican President said this when he inspected Ikelenge District Hospital whose works have stalked since 2015.

And Provincial Infrastructure Development Officer, Engineer, Paul Lusaka explained to the President that about K31 million is needed to complete the hospital project.

Meanwhile, North-western province Permanent Secretary, Willies Mangimela said a new contractor will soon be engaged adding that all the workers that are owed by the previous contractor will be paid.

Among the projects whose works have stalled include Ikelenge secondary school.

President Lungu has also toured Ikelenge main market where he took time to interact with the marketers and distribute masks.
