Why the Truth about KK’s 27 Year Brutal Reign is Critical to His Greatness

65

By Kapya Kaoma.

While his passing has broken people’s hearts across the globe, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, aka KK, was first and foremost the president of Zambia.

If one is to paint an honest portrait of KK’s life, it wouldn’t be full of roses as bishops, politicians, academics and even columnists want us to paint–but a mirage of light swallowed by 27 years of progressive darkness slowly emerging into three decades of an inviting glow of torch of life-giving light.

I endured the last part of 27 years of the KK regime. Unlike many Zambians, I don’t want to lie–the Kaunda days were hell; he ruled Zambia with an iron fist. Like all dictators, intimidation was his biggest weapon. They first went for Alice Lenshina and the Lumpa Church. My parents cared less. Then UNIP came for the ANC. The UPP followed. Finally, they came for all of us.

I was in Grade 10 when I was first detained and had an AK 47 pointed at me simply for questioning military presence on Zambian roads. Young people don’t even know what “Military roadblocks” mean; we were searched daily like criminals in our own nation. Guns were pointed at us and we were detained at will–it was the State of Emergency. We shouted “kumulu niLesa, panshi ni Kaunda. ” That slogan says it all! Then came the vigilantees–we called them, “ba ByAir.” Under KK’s watch, they terrorized us and beat the hell out of us. His OPs were equally brutal. Praise God. Afro-amnesia is real after all–it is now water under the bridge.

We were taught about freedom fighters. But not the fact that after rotting in colonial jails, KK also locked them up for publicly expressing opposition to his rule. To the Regime, anyone who aspired to become president of Zambia became a public enemy regardless of how close one was to KK. He disgraced Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula simply to secure his right to rule unchallenged. His hunger for power blinded him from seeing the humanity of his political opponents. The military, the police and every aspect of the government served to secure his hold on power.

Sadly, this is not the KK Africa knew. Kaunda was one of its greatest political philosophers, but like Nkurumah, his leadership style betrayed his own philosophy. A Pan Africanist to the bone KK was; a great father to fellow Africans. He fought Americans and the British for supporting the Boers in South Africa. He battled Botha for locking up Nelson Mandela and outlawing the ANC in South Africa. Alas. He saw nothing wrong with outlawing the Nkumbula-led ANC and the Kapwepwe-led UPP and locking up their leaders in his own nation. He opposed laws that limited freedom of expression in South Africa and Rhodesia, but Zambians who spoke up against him were locked up or ended up dead. In short, Zimbabweans, South Africans, Namibians and other African nations had a very different picture of Dr. Kaunda from those who endured his brutal reign.

I disagree with those who want to ignore this historical truth. Doing so is not only dishonestly immoral, but also dishonorable to this son of the Soil. I believe KK discovered himself in those 27 years and realized that Zambia belonged to all of us. (The passing of his friends could have been a factor) He became dignified and humane enough to put Zambia above his own interests by facing the riots and tension of the late 1980s. Unlike other African Nationalist leaders and POST-KK Zambian Presidents, he cut his term by 3 years and called for early elections in 1991. Even before all the votes were counted, he conceded to F. T. J. Chiluba and allowed the peaceful transition of power–becoming the first Nationalist leader in Africa to give up power in a democratic election.

Despite being miserably mistreated and being denied a chance to contest the 1996 election by the Chiluba administration–the election he would have likely won, the mature KK put Zambia first–he remained a common citizen or “a peasant farmer,” as he introduced himself in that fake coup trial manufactured by then desperate President Chiluba.

Dr. Kaunda became even bigger by dedicating the rest of his life to fighting HIV–the subject most of us were ashamed to talk about. To me this is the quality of ubuntu I mourn in KK.

I don’t want to bury his political leadership, it was brutal. I admire his Pan Africanist Philosophy, it is mere words. Nonetheless his reading of the times and willingness to put Zambia first in 1991, and more still his post-Presidential actions were humane and inspirational–he used his name and personality to help us talk and do things to address HIV across the world.

He employed his wisdom and grand humility to show us that power is not in Plot 1; rather in the person we become for the rest of our lives. We all have much to learn from KK. It is not how we begin that matters, but how we end. May we grow to make a difference with what has remained of our time on earth. Farewell Son of the Soil! Welcome us when we follow.

Covid cases rising in Muchinga

6

The demand for COVID-19 testing has risen in Muchinga Province.

The Ministry of Health says the province has seen an increase in the number of people requesting to be tested for COVID-19 since the third wave begun.

Speaking during in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today, Provincial Health Director (PHD) Nero Chilembo attributed to rise in demand for the test to the increase in COVID -19 cases countrywide.

Dr Chilembo said the increase in the number of people requesting to be tested at various health centers is also due to the severeness of the disease and rise in the death toll with Muchinga not having been spared.

He said during the COVID -19 third wave the province has equally recorded a high number of COVID -19 cases especially during the month of June as it was anticipated.

” What is happening now was expected as we projected an increase in active cases especially around mid-June,” he stated .

Dr Chilembo added that due to the current situation the ministry in the province has heightened measures for both patients and those at Out Patient Department (OPD) coming with respiratory problems.

” We are now testing patients who are admitted and those coming with respiratory issues at the OPD as a measure to stem the further spread of the virus,” he said.

He said in Muchinga Province case record is rising adding that the province during this third wave is now recording above 150 active cases per day, admissions and deaths as compared to the second wave.

The PHD however, bemoaned the disengagement level of compliance by members of the community to the COVID -19 health guidelines.

He said it is worrisome that most people in communities are not adhering to the measures that have been put in place by Government through the Ministry of health despite the number of cases rising.

Dr Chilembo added that if the trend continues, the risks are high of having a majority of its population infected and record an increase in deaths due to seriousness of the pandemic.

He said the focus of attention should be on prevention , monitoring and treatment in order to save lives and the country’s economy.

He has since called on the community members to combine efforts with Government in the fight against COVID- 19 which keeps claiming lives.

Dr Chilembo charged that the fight against COVID should not be left to the health sector alone if the war has to be won and called for more concerted efforts from all.

“We all have a role to play at individual, family, institutional and community levels,” he added.

As at yesterday Muchinga Province recorded 149 new cases and positivity rate of 18 percent.

Meanwhile, youths have been called upon to take the pandemic seriously.

Joanna Nayeme said it is saddening that young lives are being lost due to COVID-19.

Ms Nayeme added that youths are the future leaders but if the entire general is whipped out as a result of Covid what will become of mother Zambia.

She said it is because of the vital play that youths play in the country that they should safeguard their lives by adhere to the public health and social guidelines that are in place in order to halt the spread of Covid.

” Am calling on all my fellow youths to follow the five golden rules and prevent the further loss of lives in our nation,” she added.

REPUBLICAN Vice-President Mrs Inonge Mutukwa Wina has noted that late First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda supported the independence struggles in the region. Mrs Wina said that Dr Kaunda believed that Zambia was not independent until the rest of the region was liberated.

The Vice-president said this during the funeral procession of Dr Kaunda at the Solwezi Independence Stadium today.

“It was in this regard that Dr Kaunda headed and coordinated the accommodation of refugees in the region by creating the Maheba Refugee Resettlements in Kalumbila District in 1971, which is the largest refugee resettlement in Zambia,” Mrs Wina said.

She said a number of freedom fighters suffered arbitrary arrests and incarceration but they never gave up because of the fight for independence.

“One time Dr Kaunda spent time in Kabombo District under restriction in 1959, during liberation struggles under house arrest and we call that house the Kabompo House which has since been declared a national monument,” Mrs Wina recalled.

And Mrs Wina has stated that the Zambian people and the world are saddened and heartbroken by the passing of the founding father of the nation.

“Indeed death is never an easy concept to grasp. Our great nation has truly lost an exemplary leader whose dedication to his country and people formed the very foundation of our beloved Mother Zambia,” she said.

She added that it was therefore very important that the people of North-Western Province and Zambia at large should honour the memorable works and sacrifices that he made for the nation especially in key sectors like education, infrastructure and industries and humanism promoted oneness, unity and peace.

And a representative for the bereaved family Lt. Col Panko Kaunda has urged politicians to desire from perpetrating violence and divisions among Zambians for their political gains.

He has also called on their Royal Highnesses the Chiefs in the area to rise up against tribalism and regionalism in their chiefdoms because they had the power to stop the vices.

“The motto of One Zambia One Nation has united all tribes and kept Zambia together but today we are trying to divide ourselves as tribes and this is being done us politicians in the name of their Royal Highnesses,” Lt. Col Kaunda said.

And speaking on behalf of the Chiefs in North-Western Province, His Royal Highness Chief Ishiwa the traditional leadership in the area were celebrating the life of Dr Kaunda whose immerse life was very difficult to describe.

“Dr Kaunda was everything good. As a philosopher, he coined the One Zambia One Nation motto. In the civil service during his era we were well-coached on his philosophy of humanism,” Chief Ishiwa said. “He was a teacher and preacher who was a good role model and he used to play music besides being a farmer who inspired most of our chiefdoms.”

And United Church of Zambia (UCZ) North-Western Presbytery Bishop Moses Gondwe said the church was thankful to God for giving them a person like Dr. Kaunda.

“He had a compassionate heart and spoke for all people and it could only be God. Through him we are one Zambia one Nation and we can settle anywhere without discrimination.

The government has announced that all issuance of permits by local authorities for any social gathering has been suspended in addition to measures announced by Secretary to Cabinet recently.

Speaking during the routine COVID-19 update today, Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary Matthew Ngulube said this has come into effect with immediate and that permits that have already been issued are nullified to be reviewed after 21 days.

Among the gatherings whose permits have been suspended are weddings, chilanga mulilos, matebetos, birthday parties, conferences, workshops among other gatherings. With regards to funerals, Mr. Ngulube said burial permits will only be issued subject to adherence to the stipulated COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

“Mourners must mask up, they must sanitize, observe physical distancing, avoid crowds and seek medical attention if found sick and only 50 mourners are allowed per gathering,” he said.

Mr. Ngulube further said bars, nightclubs, and casinos that have been allowed to operate from Sunday to Friday from 18 to 22 hours, must also comply with the guidelines provided and operate within the permitted hours.

“Non-compliance will lead to revocation of liquor licenses or any other licenses, closure and or prosecution of the offenders,” he said and instructed that all local authorities monitor adherence and report to the Ministry of Local government on Monday, June 28, 2021.

“Should the report indicate otherwise, such places will be deemed as super-spreaders of COVID-19 and may attract more drastic measures by the government,” he said, adding that funerals with immediate effect will only allow gatherings of 50 people only in order to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

In the last 24 hours, Zambia has recorded 60 new deaths with 2, 595 new confirmed cases. Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Technical Services, Dr. Kennedy Malama said Lusaka is currently considered as a supra epicenter of the pandemic as seen from the continued increase in cases being recorded on a daily basis, with 39 deaths and 559 new cases being recorded in the last 24 hours.

Dr. Malama has also reiterated the warning against people self-prescribing and self-administering drugs from homes such as Dexamethason which he says reduces immunity and makes one vulnerable to COVID 19 and other diseases.

He has also disclosed that the current wave has seen some patients presenting with atypical symptoms which are not the common or classical ones noted during the first and second waves.

“Some of the patients we are seeing now are presenting with atypical symptoms including sneezing, blocked nose, lower backache with weakness as well as mild on and off headache,” he said.

Dr. Malama has also disclosed that the ministry will tomorrow open Chilenje level one hospital as a COVID 19 treatment center, further adding that the country will in the next two days receive about 200 oxygen cylinders.

State House continues receiving messages of condolences on the passing of Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda

State House has continued receiving messages of condolences to President Edgar Lungu on the passing of Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, the first president of the Republic of Zambia.

President Hage Geingob of Namibia has described the demise of Dr. Kaunda as a “dark moment for Africa, for a giant tree of the continent has fallen.”

He describes Dr. Kaunda as “an outstanding revolutionary, a tenacious freedom fighter, towering intellectual and a consummate Pan Africanist, who dedicated his life in pursuit of freedom, justice and equality for the peoples of Zambia, Southern Africa and Africa at large.”

“To the Namibian people, former President KK will be remembered for his immense and selfless contribution to the liberation of Namibia. For many years, Zambia was home to SWAPO cadres and many other Namibians, who went into exile to take up the fight against apartheid colonialism. There is no doubt that President KK’s legacy will remain immortalised in the hearts and minds of countless Namibian generations to come,” said President Geingob.

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa says President Kaunda played a significant role in the fight against apartheid and contributed to unity, peace and stability in South Africa.

“We remember Dr. Kaunda, or affectionately known as “KK”. He was fondly remembered as a stalwart, true friend and comrade of the people of South Africa. As a country, we will always be eternally grateful to Dr. Kaunda for hosting South African Freedom fighters in Zambia. Many South Africans still regard Zambia as their home, during the liberation struggle, it was a place of safety, education, camaraderie and friendship,” says President Ramaphosa.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe says the passing on of Dr. Kaunda has robbed the Kaunda family and the people of Zambia, and indeed the rest of Africa, of an exemplary Father, an astute politician and leader, whose immense contribution to the liberation of Southern African countries from colonial rule is well documented and acknowledged by the international community.

And Prime Minister Moeketsi Majoro of Lesotho says Dr. Kaunda’s contribution in hosting Basotho’s political stalwarts including, Dr. Ntsu Mokhehle, among others, in the liberation struggle for Basotho’s political and economic emancipation and true democracy in 1970, will forever be cherished.

Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi says Dr. Kenneth Kaunda will be remembered for his relentless dedication and commitment to freedom for all, and service to his country during his tenure as Head of State from 1964 until 1991, as well as his devotion to the development of Zambia, particularly, the improvement of the socio-economic livelihoods of his people.

“More importantly Dr. Kenneth Kaunda envisioned regional integration that could only be explicated in Southern Africa, and the rest of Africa, based on profound political principles that not only sought to liberate the people of Southern Africa but reverberate in the ideal that was and is the African unity,” reads part of President Masisi’s message.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera said President Kaunda will be remembered as one of the brave sons of Africa who diligently fought for the sovereignty of the African countries in general, and Zambia in particular.

President Paul Kagame of Rwanda said Dr. Kaunda’s unique contribution and unwavering commitment to the African liberation movements shall remain forever with the people of the African continent and Rwanda will continue to celebrate his legacy as a Pan Africanist who devoted his life to the service of his country and our continent.

President Mahmoud Abbas of the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation says the Palestinian people will always remember Dr. Kaunda with gratitude for his support for their cause.

Algeria President Abdelmadjid Tebboune says Dr. Kaunda was from the first generation of militants who devoted themselves to the liberation and independence of Zambia and was the symbol of a long fight for freedom and dignity for the whole of Africa.

“Algeria is proud to count the departed among its most important and valued friends, and has lost, with Zambia and Africa, one of the greatest leaders to whom we, together with you, bid farewell with pain and sorrow,” part of his message reads.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany says President Kaunda was a champion of freedom who not only secured independence for his own people, but also helped neighbouring Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe to tread this path.

“President Kaunda will be remembered as a great statesman who, also following his retirement from active political life made an outstanding contribution as a crisis mediator in the region and as an active voice in the fight against AIDS. With his passing, Africa and the world have lost a great politician and a distinguished figure. He was the last of the generation of statesmen who shaped the course of decolonisation in Africa,” said President Steinmeier.

President Sauli Niinistö of Finland says he was saddened to hear of the passing of Kenneth David Kaunda, First President of the Republic of Zambia, on 17th June 2021.

He added that his dedication to the independence of Zambia and to the liberation struggles in Southern Africa made him a globally prominent figure.

Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella writes that Italy is close to the friendly people of Zambia as it recalls a personality that led the country to independence and left a deep impression in the history of the African continent, as a key player in the fight against apartheid.

Meanwhile, International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Executive Secretary Ambassador João Samuel Caholo says the African continent has lost one of its great sons, who will be remembered as a staunch Pan-Africanist who fought for the liberation of his country as well as provided a safe haven to refugees who had fled conflict in their own countries, in Southern Africa and the continent as a whole.

African Union’s Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) Head of Secretariat Mr. William Carew said ECOSOCC stood in solidarity with the Kaunda family, the people and the Government of the Republic of Zambia “as we mourn and honour the life of a freedom fighter, a great statesman, a learned scholar, visionary and liberation struggle icon.”

Dean of the Members of the Diplomatic Corp accredited to Zambia, and High Commissioner of the Republic of Malawi to Zambia, Mr. Warren Gunda says “In Africa, we say the ‘Sky has fallen’, when an icon like Dr. Kaunda passes on. This is not only a loss to the Zambian people, but the entire African continent and the world at large. Dr. Kenneth Kaunda will be remembered for his philosophy of “humanism” and his relentless fight for the freedom of humanity.”

And Smart Partnership Movement Joint Dialogue Convener Dr. Mihaela Smith describes Dr Kaunda as the most charismatic and inspiring among the last living leaders of Africa’s independence struggle.

“We would like to convey through Your Excellency our condolences and great sympathy to the Zambian nation regarding the passing of the former and founding President of Zambia, Dr Kenneth Kaunda,” said Dr Smith.

This is according to a press statement issued to ZANIS by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Isaac Chipampe in Lusaka today.

Honour KK by conducting violent free campaigns – Advocate

8

A peace advocate has called on Zambians to honour the country’s founding father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda by conducting bloodshed free campaigns in the run up to the August 12 general elections.

Professor John Bwalya who is also director for the Dag Hammarskjold Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies said Dr. Kaunda was an advocate of peace in his entire life and as such it would be disheartening for the country to be plunged into chaotic bloodshed characterized campaigns before he is even buried.

“Zambians should honour Dr. Kaunda with peaceful campaigns and not bloodshed characterised campaigns even before he is buried, he always advocated for peace so it would be befitting to honour him by conducting campaigns that are free from any form of bloodshed or violence,” Professor Bwalya said.

He also urged politicians to emulate Dr. Kaunda who believed that in elections there is always a winner and loser and to avoid fighting each other when they realise that they are less popular.

“Dr. Kaunda left a country without bloodshed, a country of a peaceful nature which we are all proud to live in and it should be each person’s goal to promote this peace,” Professor Bwalya added.

He noted that if the country loses the peace which its people are enjoying now, it will be difficult to regain it.

Professor Bwalya has since called for stiffer penalties for perpetuators of political violence so as to curb the problem

Meanwhile, United Church of Zambia (UCZ) General Secretary Bishop Chipasha Musaba has described the rumour that circulated on social media yesterday purporting that former president Rupiah Banda had died as immoral and unchristian.

In an interview in Kitwe yesterday Bishop Musaba said it was irresponsible for someone to fabricate news of such serious magnitude when they knew it was actually not true.

“People should learn to use social media responsibly because if it is used irresponsibly, it has the potential to disturb people’s emotions or cause panic in the country so people should think twice before they post anything on social media,” Bishop Musaba charged.

And Kitwe Pastors Fellowship president Reverend Rady Lewila has called on the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) and the Police to bring to book the person who posted the fake news about the former president.

Reverend Lewila said the church does not take lightly such irresponsible use of social media especially at a time when the country has lost its founding father Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and other important personalities such as the Chief Justice and former Ministers.

“ZICTA and the Police should bring the person who posted that information and let the law take its course,” Reverend Lewila demanded.

Yesterday, Zambians were taken into a panic mood after someone posted on social media that former Republican president Rupiah Banda had died, information that was later refuted by Mr. Banda himself in a story that was carried by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) in the evening.

Chilenje Level 1 Hospital in Lusaka to soon be converted into a COVID-19 treatment centre, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Kennedy Malama has revealed.

Dr Malama said during the routine COVID-19 update in Lusaka yesterday that the move is intended to increase the space of COVID-19 treatment centres.

“In our quest to increase space we will be converting Chilenje Hospital in Lusaka into a COVID -19 treatment centre in the coming days. To stem further spread of COVID 19, let us all take that critical step to adhere and enforce the five golden rules in all our circles,” he said.

And the Permanent Secretary noted that the sad picture in terms of lives lost on a daily basis due to COVID-19 in the country remains worrisome as he announced that the highest ever number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, of 61 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

He added that 3,594 new confirmed COVID-19 cases out of 12,880 tests conducted giving a 28 percent positivity were also recorded in Zambia in the last 24 hours.

Dr Malama highlighted that the breakdown of new deaths by province shows that Lusaka recorded 20, Copperbelt and Southern 12 cases each, Eastern eight, Western three, Central and Northern two each and Luapula and North-western provinces one each respectively.

“As you can see, all our provinces except Muchinga reported deaths in the last 24 hours, yet another stark indication of just how dire our situation is,” Dr Malama observed.

He indicated that the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date now stands at 1,855 classified as 1,194 COVID deaths and 661 COVID-19 associated deaths.

“Of all the deaths recorded over the course of the pandemic, 574 representing 31 percent have been recorded in the month of June alone,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, Dr Malama stated that the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date is at 140,620.

He said a total of 100 districts reported cases of COVID-19 with 69 districts reporting 10 or more cases adding that Lusaka is the epicenter, contributing an average of 31 percent of the daily disease burden.

“The breakdown of the new cases by province are as follows, Central 464, Copperbelt 366, Eastern 435, Luapula 111, Lusaka 1,130, Muchinga 149, Northern 179, North-western 105, Southern 278 and Western 377,” he indicated.

And the Permanent Secretary stated that 2,789 discharges were made in the last 24 hours which included 104 from isolation and treatment health facilities and 2,685 from home management, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 115,898.

“Further, in the last 24 hours, we had 220 COVID-19 admissions to the healthcare facilities nationally. We now have 22,867 active cases, of whom 21,624 are under community management and 1,243 are admitted to our COVID-19 isolation facilities.

Dr Malama pointed out that among those currently under admission, 856 are on oxygen therapy and 176 are in critical condition.

He observed that the country has continued to see high admission rate on a daily basis, with the number averaging over 200 each day for the past week indicating that the COVID -19 is widely spread in the communities.

“The good news is that we can change this narrative in the next three weeks if we worked as one and transferred the fight from our hospitals to the communities,” the Permanent Secretary noted.

He added, “We cannot bend the COVD 19 cases, admissions, and deaths curve from hospitals but from our communities. We all have a role to play at individual, family, institutional and community levels.”

Government to give 30% shares in Black mountain to youths – Mines PS

Ministry of Mines Permanent Secretary, Barnaby Mulenga says government may consider giving out its 30 per cent shares in the black mountain to the youths in Kitwe following the High Court Judgement that allowed it to pull out of its partnership with Nkana Alloy and Smelting Company Limited.

Following the court judgement last week, government remained with 30 per cent share in the black mountain after it gave out its 10 per cent to youths three years ago.

Speaking in an interview in Kitwe yesterday in response to calls by youths engaged in small scale mining asking government to hand over the shares to them, Mr. Mulenga said his Ministry will next week issue a statement on how it will manage the 30 per cent shares.

“We will issue a statement on the matter next week and giving the facility to the youths is one of the options,” Mr. Mulenga said.

Earlier, Chapamo Mineral Resources Director, Kelvin Tembo appealed to government to once again give the youths part of its stake in the black mountain to cushion the youths from the adverse effects of COVID-19.

Mr. Tembo said youths needs some form of empowerment adding that offering them part of the black mountain to exploit mineral resources would be the best empowerment at the moment.

“Our expectation is that we get some more shares , as youths we need a cushioning from the effects of COVID-19 ,as you know these effects are so immense on the youths, so we expect government will give us some more shares since we have a listening and caring government,” he said.

And Mr. Tembo said if given the opportunity to mine from the black mountain again, the youths will ensure that safety measures are put in place to avoid any form of accident.

He noted that the accidents that happened the last time youths were given an opportunity to mine from the black mountain were as a result of lack of experience which cannot occur this time around.

“Accidents were bound to happen because at that time the mining operations were in their infancy but now we have learnt quiet a lot and we will put modalities to ensure that no accidents happen be it injuries or fatalities,” Mr. Tembo said.

Last week, the Lusaka High Court granted government a go ahead to pull out of Nkana Alloy and Smelting Company Limited and repossess 30 per cent of the black mountain.

Three years ago government gave youths in Kitwe 10 per cent of the black mountain for mining activities which has since been exhausted.
