UPND hands over Vehicles to its 10 10 provincial Chairmen

The United Party for National Development (UPND) today handed over motor vehicles to its 10 provincial Chairmen across the country to help audit the party growth following the mobilisation exercise that has been going on.

Handing over the vehicles on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema at a colourful ceremony at the National Youth Command Centre in Villa, Thornpark today, Party Deputy Secretary General Mrs Getrude Imenda said the party leadership has listened to the cries of the youths on the need for transport to help during party mobilisation.

Mrs Imenda asked the youth leadership to reciprocate the trust given to them by giving the vehicles to competent people to operate them and go flat out to all corners of the country.

“I believe mobilization has taken place in all the provinces so I urge you to go into those provinces to audit in order to ascertain if indeed mobilization took place,” she said.

The Deputy Secretary General urged the youths to get on the ground and make sure the party wins elections with a landslide victory.
“You have been empowered now and you should not complain of not having the necessary logistical support,” she said.

UPND Youth say they know the PF cadres who destroyed UPND campaign materials

“We are giving police 48 hours to arrest criminals who destroyed a building and burnt UPND campaign regalia failure to which we will apprehend known Patriotic Front members who committed the act,” United Party for National Development (UPND) deputy National Youth Chairman Stephen Chikota has warned.

Reacting to a video that has gone viral showing known PF members are seen burning UPND campaign materials and insulting the party President, Mr Chikota said it is sad that no action has been taken against the culprits despite the case being reported to police.

“We are capable of hitting back if this lawlessness is allowed to continue and we are giving police 48 hours to arrest these known culprits. We are not telling when and how we will arrest them but we are definitely getting them,” Mr Chikota said.

He was speaking at the party’s New Youth Command Centre in Villa, Thornpark when he addressed the press yesterday afternoon.

Speaking at the same event, Lusaka Province Party Youth Chairman Anderson Banda asked all PF youths who are being disowned by their leaders to realise that they are always abandoned to face the face law alone after being used to cause violence and insult innocent citizens.

He appealed to the police command to immediately bring to book cadres perpetuating violence.

And National Youth Secretary Samuel Ngwira has wondered how many times President Lungu is going to be giving ultimatum to a non performing Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja.

Mr Ngwira said a few months after the extra judicial killings of Thomas Nsama and Bruce Kaunda near cabinet office in Lusaka, Mr Lungu told the nation that he was only giving Kanganja a few months to conclude the investigation of the two citizens.

He said Mr. Lungu should not waste time threatening to fire Mr Kanganja but must maintain him so that they can be fired together on the 12th August as Zambians are resolved and convinced beyond reason doubt to change government this year.

Mubita Nawa Demonstrates How UPND is Rich in Insults Yet Bankrupt on Alternatives

24

By Sunday Chilufya Chanda

We take great exception to Mr. Hakainde Hichilema’s UPND appointee Mr. Mubita Nawa’s crass shenanigans on a video where he is clearly seen gleefully enjoying and encouraging a UPND cadre’s insults targeted at the President of the Republic of Zambia Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

While it is bad enough to insult even a child, it is an abomination for Mr. Nawa to abet insults of a person old enough to be his biological father. It is even a greater abomination beyond words, when the target of the insults besides being old enough to be Nawa’s father, is the Head of State. Sheer abomination! Ala Mupamba! Ni maloza! (Abomination!).

What is even more sickening is that Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, in his defiant response in a terse social media statement, describes Mubita Nawa’s vulgarities and insults directed at the Head of State as that of a “model citizen”. Mr. Hichilema’s defiant defence of his “presidential aide” clearly demonstrates how Nawa’s crassness has Mr. Hichilema’s full blessing.

We wish to remind Messrs Hichilema and Nawa that the Presidency is a venerable institution enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

Let me remind my brother Mr Nawa as follows: Section 69 of the Penal Code provides:

“any person who, with intent to bring the President into hatred, ridicule or contempt, publishes any defamatory or insulting matter, whether by writing, print, word of mouth or in any other manner, is guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years.”_

Rather than frantically trying to spin it or deflect it, Mr. Nawa must show remorse by apologising to the President and the people of the Republic of Zambia. The more he tries to cosmetically cover it up with misplaced banter, word play and semantics, the more his boil of insults festers and the more the pus of his indecency is exposed.
It is a tragedy how insults have defined the UPND culture and character both on-line and offline. It just goes to show how Mr. Hichilema and his party of “insultants” are so bankrupt on alternatives, that they can do nothing but hone their vulgarity on innocent others.

It is disturbing that Messrs Hichilema, Nawa and Co. think that they can insult their way into State House. The majority of voters in Zambia love the Head of State and are pro-PF. They have not forgotten how Mr. Hichilema insulted them just because they support the development agenda of His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.
When will UPND ever learn? Their vulgarity and insults are anathema.

Mr. Hichilema and his ilk should learn to disagree without being personally disagreeable. We therefore challenge the Opposition UPND to meet us at the arena of development, the arena of alternative policies, not insults.

THE RULING Patriotic Front (PF) has announced the list of its adopted candidates for the Parliamentary, Mayoral, and Council Chairperson positions for Southern, Central and North-Western Provinces.

Communication Minister Urges Police Chief to Arrest UPND Presidential Spokesperson Mubita Nawa for Defamation

The government has urged the Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja to arrest United Party for National Development (UPND) presidential spokesperson Mubita Nawa and a UPND cadre for defamation of the President.

A video has since gone viral, where Mr. Nawa acting together with another man a “Mulenga” was allegedly insulting and defaming the Republican President contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Police are currently investigating the matter.

Transport and Communications Minister Hon Mutotwe Kafwaya said that demeaning the Head of State in such a manner should not be condoned.

Hon Kafwaya said that Mr Kanganja must ensure that these two individuals are brought to book immediately, adding that with the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, the law has sufficient provisions to deal with such crimes.

The Hon Minister says the law further provides for admission of electronic evidence into the courts of law making it sufficient to deal with such issues through out the entire process.

“Let me also appeal to HH (Hakainde Hichilema) to stop teaching his cadres insults. The insulting lectures that he gave in Lukanshya is now bearing very bad fruits,” he said.

“I think that HH must now own up and indicate to the nation that he is tutorials in Lukanshya were terrible resulting in what we are seeing.”

Zambia to cement relations with Bangladesh

Government says it cherishes the political and military interactions that exist between Zambia and Bangladesh.

Ministry of Defense Deputy Permanent Secretary, Wesy Likeli noted that Zambia being the first country in Africa to recognize the sovereignty of Bangladesh, remains resolute to further cement the bilateral ties.

He pointed out that government will explore other areas of mutual interest in the Agriculture and health sectors in which Bangladesh is thriving.

ZANIS Reports that Mr Likeli made the remarks when visiting Bangladesh Chief of Army Staff, General Aziz Ahmed paid a courtesy call on him in Lusaka today.

“Zambia cherishes that interaction that exists between our two people both at political and military levels. You would recall that we were the first country in Africa, to recognize your independence and we remain firm to working closely with you,” he said.

And Visiting Bangladeshi Chief of Army Staff, Aziz Ahmed has called on the Zambian government to explore other areas of mutual interest with his country.

General Aziz cited the health sector among the sectors that Zambia can benefit from stating that his country exports medicines to 150 countries globally.

“Our relations date back to 1983 when President Dr Kenneth Kaunda paid a state visit to our country and we saw the bilateral ties rejuvenated last year by the visit of Zambia Army Commander to our country, a thing that has gone down in the history of the two countries. We are thriving in the health and Agriculture sectors and Zambia can benefit immensely,” he emphasized.

And General Azizi later paid a courtesy call on Zambia Army Commander, Lt General William Sikazwe, where he reiterated that his country remains resolute to furthering the bilateral ties with the Zambian Army.

He stated that so far, at least 30 officers from Zambia Army have attended military courses from his country, which he said are still on-going.

Meanwhile, Lt General Sikazwe hailed Bangladesh for having played a significant role in the training of the defense force personnel.

He said his visit to Bangladesh and General Aziz’s visit to Zambia is a clear testimony of the growing bilateral ties between the two countries.

General Aziz who arrived in the country last week, will return to his country this week.

Public, private sectors urged to aggressively embrace technology amid covid-19 pandemic

Chairperson of the Private sector Development Association Yussuf Dodia has urged both the Public and Private sectors to aggressively embrace technology to help mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 on the economy.

Mr. Dodia said this in an interview with ZANIS in Serenje adding that the two sectors need to be strategic in controlling the Covid-19 Pandemic to avoid an economic disaster in the country.

Mr. Dodia said since the Covid-19 is still with us the two sectors need to aggressively embrace technology to cushion its impact on the country’s economy.

“Covid -19 is something we have been struggling with hence the public and private sectors need to rethink new mechanisms to achieve the same results of how they will, for example keep employees employed even though they will not turn up to the office,” he said.

Mr. Dodia said the sectors may discover that the new mechanisms may be more profitable than the old ones.

He said players in the private and public sectors need to be mindful that when a lot of people get infected with the virus and become sick, a lot of national resources that were supposed to go to economic development will go towards health care.

Mambilima Applauds UNEP for Programmes to Enhance Environmental Justice in Zambia.

Chief Justice, Irene Mambilima has commended the United Nations Environmental Protection (UNEP) for the continued fostering of programmes aimed at enhancing environmental justice in Zambia.

Justice Mambilima notes that such programmes are inevitable and an important aspect to the environment, as they are designed to ensure that persons responsible for polluting the environment are taken to task.

The Chief Justice also stated that it is for this reason that UNEP working in collaboration with the Zambia Environmental Protection Authority (ZEMA) and the Justice System in Zambia, are working together in coming up with laws that best address pressing environmental concerns, in order to protect Zambia’s natural resources.

The Chief Justice said this in a speech read on her behalf by Justice Anne Sitali during the official opening of the Training of Trainers workshop for Judges, on the proposed guidelines on sentencing in Environmental, Crimes and award of Environmental damages and compensation.

And Justice Mambilima further said there is need to ensure that the environment is restored to its pristine state, in as much as offenders were taken to task for going against laws that bind environmental protection.

She reminded the judges to ensure that they remain proactive and use the guidelines to be formulated to aid them during their course of duty, when determining environmental disputes and crimes.

“Your invaluable contributions will go a long way in promoting environmental justice and sustainable development,” Justice Mambilima said.

The two day training workshop sponsored by UNEP is being done virtually with officials from the United Nations in collaboration with High Court Judges from across the country.

And UNEP Regional Coordinator, Robert Wabunoha has expressed optimism that the partnership between the environmental management authorities and the Zambian Justice system will enhance the execution of environmental justice in Zambia.

Mr Wabunoha appreciated the efforts from all the players, adding that there was need to strengthen capacities in Zambia, which he believed would be achieved once the proposed guidelines in environmental protection were officially formulated.

Meanwhile, ZEMA representative, Karen Banda also echoed the need for all stakeholders to ensure that laws binding the environment are tightened and persons responsible for going against the laws are taken to task.

Intimidation and violent attacks towards journalists should come to a stop-President Lungu

President Edgar Lungu has called for the protection of Journalists in the country against all forms of attacks. President Lungu said intimidation and violent attacks towards journalists should come to a stop as the media is a key component of the state.

He stated that once an individual engages into violent activities towards journalists, it becomes an act of criminality that will be prosecuted regardless of one’s political affiliation.

President Lungu was speaking during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day in Lusaka today. The President has assured of government’s support for press freedom in the country.

And the Head of State has urged the Police command to up their game and protect journalists, including all law-abiding citizens from harassment and violence especially ahead of the general elections on August 12, 2021.

“Harassment of journalists is totally unacceptable. Intimidation, harassment and violence is not politics, thus, immediately a person engages in such conduct, he or she has drifted from politics into criminality. Such a person must be arrested and prosecuted,” President Lungu said.

President Edgar Lungu said that the violence that happened at the Patriotic Front Secretariat on Saturday where some journalists were injured is the last test for Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja.

President Lungu said that harassment of the media is criminal and anyone perpetuating the vice should be arrested.

President Lungu said that times have changed where the media was being viewed as an enemy of the state and should now be viewed as key partners in development.

Addressing this year’s World Press Freedom Day under the theme “Information as a Public Good,” the Head of State reiterated his Government’s commitment towards Press Freedom and urged the media to remain truthful as the country heads towards the August polls.

The Head of State also urged journalists to be accurate in providing information to the general public and avoid propagating hate speech.

He observed that some media houses that are practicing unethical journalism by being biased in their reporting, will ruin the careers of the journalists whose credibility will be questioned.

President Lungu implored media practitioners to always present their news in a way that is comprehensive and proportional.

“Journalism’s first obligation is truth, and journalists can only report truthfully if they do thorough investigations and talk to all sides of the story,” he advised.

He added that some media houses have become political mouth pieces because politicians are paying journalists for positive coverage which should not be the case.

The President further advised trained journalists to distinguish themselves from citizen journalism and masqueraders by being professional in their line of work.

He noted that the country has made strides through investment in good quality news transmission through digital migration which is being emulated by other countries.

This year’s World Press Freedom Day is being commemorated under the theme “Information as a public good.”

HRC calls for protection of Journalists

The Human Rights Commission ( HRC) has called for the protection and safety of journalists ahead of the forthcoming August 12, 2021 general elections.

HRC Spokesperson, Mweelwa Muleya said members of the public especially political party cadres should accord the media the due respect as the fourth estate of government after the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

Mr Muleya has since called for enhanced protection of all Journalists ahead of the August general elections.

“In a democracy such as Zambia, the government has a primary responsibility to promote and protect the right to freedom of expression without any form of interference or hindrance. The media also has a noble duty of promoting free expression of divergent and pluralistic ideas and views without any form of discrimination,” Mr. Muleya said.

He noted that government has an obligation to protect the safety of journalists to ensure an enabling environment for them to perform their duty.

“Where the lives and rights of journalists are threatened or violated, the state must take practical steps towards seeking redress for the victims while subjecting perpetrators to the due process of the law in order to end impunity,” he said.

He also called on the media to be inclusive in their programming, reporting and coverage so as to mirror Zambia as a Multi-ethnic, racial, religious, cultural and multi-party democratic state.

Mr. Muleya further said as Zambia commemorates Press Freedom Day, Journalists should continue being the frontline human rights defenders for the common good. This year’s Press Freedom Day commemoration was graced by President Edgar Lungu.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in Muchinga Province has saluted journalists in the region for highlighting various developmental programmes and other activities.

Speaking in an interview on the occasion to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day, ZCTU Muchinga Regional Coordinator, Nondo Kasanda has commended the media for playing a pivotal role in keeping the region informed on various matters of public interest.

Mr. Kasanda who wished all journalists in the province a successful World Press Freedom Day, encouraged them to be factual, free and fair when covering events.

Mr. Kasanda said journalists should strive to be professional in the execution of their duties in line with this year’s World Press Freedom Day which is being commemorated under the theme ”Information as a Public Good”.

He said journalism has contributed to the development and civilization of the nation.

Mr. Kasanda added that ignorance is easily defeated by having a well-informed citizenry and that freedom of speech promotes peace and good governance.

“We only have one Zambia and it is important that we protect our mother Zambia through responsible reporting by caring and paying attention to the information we are giving the public through the media, “said Mr. Kasanda.

Mr. Kasanda says commitment from the Government to protect journalists from harassment especially during the run up to the August 12 general election, is highly commendable.

Police probes burning of UPND materials

The Zambia Police Service has instituted investigations in the video that has gone viral depicting people burning political materials for the United Party for National Development (UPND).

According to a statement issued to the media today, Zambia Police Spokesperson, Esther Katongo says initial investigations have revealed that the materials being burnt were grabbed from a female adult who was going to deliver to clients.

Mrs Katongo noted that members of the public will be informed on the outcome of investigations once they are concluded.

She added that every political party is free to own party political materials for purposes of campaign and should not be harassed by any person or grouping with a contrary view.

Mrs Katongo stated that it is criminal to temper with, alter, damage or deface any campaign material for another political party.

She has warned that those that will be found to have involved themselves in the criminal activity depicted in the video will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

ZNFU calls for increased maize floor price

8

The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) has called on the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to offer farmers a better maize price during this year’s marketing season.

ZANIS reports that ZNFU president, Jervis Zimba said increasing the floor price will enable farmers to get full cost recovery and mark an increase in their profit margins.

Mr. Zimba stated that the K110 maize price for last year was not supporting the farmers to continue with their various agricultural practices.

“Most farmers are at a loss with the price the FRA offered, but luckily there is an alternative market availed by the private sector,” he said.

Mr. Zimba explained that most farmers have continued to rely on the private sector to buy their commodities in order for them to get profits.

He has since urged government to offer farmers an attractive price for their produce in order to empower them to diversify to other crops.

M. Zimba noted that an attractive price will lure farmers to sell to the Agency and the temptation of smuggling would be avoided.

No peace in polygamy, says Mpali’s Uncle Patrick

His role as a bumbling security guard might induce heavy bouts of laughter but Uncle Patrick of Mpali has a serious side to him.
