Nkana and Namungo are winless from the first two Group D matches ahead of their meeting at Benjamin Mkupa Stadium.

“I think our preparations since we arrived here have been a challenge,’ said Nkana coach Kelvin Kaindu in a pre-match media briefing.

“Yesterday we failed to have our training session, we got to the stadium a bit late and it was almost getting dark and also today we were waiting for the bus at 09h00 but it came a bit late. But all in all we are ready for the match,” said Kaindu.

Nkana have so far lost 3-0 to Egyptians side Pyramids in Cairo and 2-0 to Raja Casablanca in Ndola in the Group D matches played last month.

Minister of Tourism and Arts Ronald Chitotela has called on Zambians to uphold culture, morals and values during the Easter holiday.

And Mr. Chitotela has said government’s effort to grow wildlife-based tourism as a contributor to the economy is bearing fruit as seen by the support from the international community.

In his Easter message to all Zambians in Lusaka yesterday, the Minister said a nation without culture and morals is dead.

He said the two form the backbone of the identity of the people and that is what visiting tourists want to come and see.

Meanwhile, the Minister appreciated the support of cooperating partners in wildlife conservation during his tenure as seen by the willingness by the donor community to partner with the Ministry, through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in stepping up conservation efforts.

He cited the One year agreement with African Parks Network to support protection efforts on the Kafue Ecosystem, the Euro 1.2million by Frankfurt Zoological Society for protection of the North Luangwa Ecosystem and USD45 million in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States Government for the management ivory stockpile as one of the examples.

“The MoU with the British Government that brought 21 British Navy members to training Wildlife Police Officers at Chunga Training school in the Kafue National Park has improved the entire drill programme,” Mr. Chitotela stated.

He said partners like Peace Parks Foundation and Wildlife Fund for Nature have been all weather friends in the Ministry’s efforts to conserve and protect wildlife.

“My Ministry is determined to invest more in poaching programmes and training of wildlife police officers (WPOs),” the Minister added.

He thanked the Ministry of Finance for approving the treasury authority for the recruitment of 105 members of staff under his Ministry this year of which most slots would be dedicated to WPOs.

Mr. Chitotela said tourism in Africa is mainly wildlife based and hence the need to have more foot soldiers to protect the resource.

0

Ministry of Agriculture in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has trained agriculture camp extension staff in Post-Harvest Loss Management to enhance food security among small holder farmers in Namwala District of Southern Province.

Ministry of Agriculture working with support from the World Food Program (WFP) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) held a two day training workshop in post-harvest loss management for agriculture camp extension staff dubbed Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Agro Ecological Regions 1 and 2 in Zambia (SCRALA).

Southern Province Principle Agriculture Officer (PAO) Paul Nyambe told ZANIS in Namwala that most farmers fail to secure their harvest despite having a bumper harvest hence the need to train farmers on Post-harvest loss Management.

Mr Nyambe noted that most farmers were occupied with Pre harvest matters such as land preparation, buying of quality seeds while ignoring matters of post-harvest.

He cited factors such as storage, fumigation, transportation as among as some of the aspects that can preserve crops after harvest.

The two day training was funded by the World food Program through the United Nations Development Program SCRALA Program.

He further said training for the post-harvest loss Management will help the agriculture camp extension staff to impart knowledge to the smallholder farmers on the dangers of crop loss or contamination associated with Pre- and post-harvest handling of crops and help them manage their crops better to secure quality grain.

He noted that for farming to be sustainable, farmers need to earn a decent income by securing quality grain that fetches good prices.

The Agriculture Camp extension offices were trained in preventing cross loss after a good harvest, such as Pre harvest infestation and common problems after harvest, controlling grain quality, managing harvest, drying and protecting grain, threshing and cleaning of grain, storage.

Chipata Catholics Reject Presidential Empowerment Funds

45

The Bishop of Chipata Diocese and President of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops George Lungu has directed that no Catholic Institution in Eastern Province should access empowerment funds through the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs.

Bishop Lungu says while he is aware that Government has come up with the Church Empowerment fund to help churches as they struggle financially, the ZCCB has taken a stand to respectively decline receiving or accessing the funds.

In a statement, Bishop Lungu says in the principles of social justice and preferential options for the poor, the Church prefers to see the same money being channeled to other needy areas such as debt servicing, paying retirees and workers at Chipata City Council who have stayed for nine months without salaries.

He explained that it would also be prudent for government to channel the resources to the health sector to procure personal protective equipment, essential drugs and deploying more staff.

And Bishop Lungu has questioned the source of the Church empowerment funds saying people need to know where it is coming from and how it will be accounted for.

Meanwhile, Bishop Lungu says the timing of these initiatives leaves room for speculation as it coincides with activities culminating into elections.

UPND Decided to Sideline Me and the People of North Western Province-Kakoma

46

Former United Party for National Development (UPND) Spokesperson Charles Kakoma said that he left UPND because he felt betrayed for choosing to sideline him and the people of North Western Province.

Speaking at a PF Mobilisation rally in Chavuma District of North-Western Province where more than 600 people defected from UPND to PF, Mr. Kakoma wondered what UPND would do to North-Western Province if they were to form Government.

“You saw me leaving the UPND to join the PF just a few days ago. That move was necessitated by you people who felt betrayed by the UPND for choosing to sideline me and you in the party. God forbid but imagine what they could do if they were in government,” Mr. Kakoma said.

Mr Kakoma assured the people of Chavuma and North-Western Province that President Lungu and the PF means well for them as could be seen from the development that he has rolled out in the area, adding that joined the ruling party because he wants to continue serving the people by lobbying for more development to come to North-Western Province hence the need for the locals to support President Lungu and the PF.

He has assured the residents that more development is guaranteed to come to Chavuma Distrcit and the entire Western Province and urged the residents to remain committed to their pledge to support President Lungu and the PF in the August polls and also called on everyone who wishes to join the party not to hold themselves back.

Speaking at the same event Minister of Foreigh Affairs Joseph Malanji said he was impressed with the overwhelming response by the residents in the area who have resolved to work with the government of President Lungu to take development to all parts of the country.

“It is good to see that the people of Chavuma District and North-Western Province as a whole are beginning to realize that President Edgar Lungu and the PF government has their best interests at heart despite the malicious accusations levelled against him by some people who want to sow confusion everywhere,” Hon. Malanji said.

Hon. Malanji has assured them that more development is poised to come to the area soon because President Lungu has vowed to transform the area into a hub of economic activity to uplift the standards of living for the residents.

President Edgar Lungu will win this year’s elections without a re-run-Hamukale

SOUTHERN Province Minister, Edify Hamukale, has predicted that President Edgar Lungu will win this year’s elections without a re-run.

Dr. Hamukale has therefore encouraged other UPND members to leave the opposition party because it has nothing to offer. Meanwhile, some chiefs in Southern Province have vowed to work with the government of the day to bring development to the people. Dr Hamukale predicted that President Lungu would score over 60 percent which did not require a re-run.

According to Dr Hamukale, the President would emerge victorious due to his development agenda and commitment to improving the living standards in the country. He said this yesterday in Choma when Transport and Communications Minister, Mutotwe Kafwaya, launched a communication tower at Nakeempa Secondary School. “I just want you as fellow citizens to publicly know that the statistics and predictions show that President Lungu will this year win elections without any re-run, zero rerun. If first time he got 50 point something, this time around he will score 60 percent.

“President Lungu is for you and we are very happy that most of you are seeing the need to work with the Government of the day. Long live Zambia, long live President Lungu and long live Nakeempa,” Dr Hamukale said.

Dr Hamukale called on all members of the UPND to leave the party and join PF which had a lot to offer such as development. He cited the communications tower project being among the initiatives President Lungu had prioritised in Southern Province. “You have these towers because of President Lungu and if you give us more councillors, more Members of Parliament, you will see how much trickle down effects will come into this area. “So why are you remaining in a party that you and your family are not benefitting, come and join us. This tower is a demonstration that President Lungu is for all of us.

UPND has nothing to offer,” Dr Hamukale said. Earlier, Chief Cooma of Choma stressed the importance of working with the government of the day. Chief Cooma said: “we do everything with the government of the day and I am one of the traditional chiefs who are working with the government of the day. President Lungu is a very flexible leader.” And Chief Chinkanta of Kalomo said he would also work with the government and urged the people of Southern Province to support President Lungu’s administration.

Any Evil Plans to Arrest Hakainde Hichilema will not be tolerated-Mwaliteta

United Party for National Development Lusaka Province Chairperson Obvious Mwaliteta, has asked the PF to spare President Hakainde Hichilema and instead pay attention to the majority of Zambians who are suffering and failing to eat three meals in a day.

Speaking at the press briefing held at the Party Secretariat, Mr. Mwaliteta said it is so shocking that the Patriotic Front has deliberately decided to ignore issues affecting Zambians and is instead busy harassing and planning evil against President Hichilema.

” It is good that my President had totally ignored them because he is too busy planning what he will to rebuild the collapsed economy once he forms Government comes 12th August 2021.” said Mr. Mwaliteta.

He said President Hichilema has no business with the PF but the people of Zambia.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mwaliteta warned the PF against any evils plans to arrest President Hichilema as that will not be anyway be tolerated.

He said UPND is aware of all plans to arrest and torture President Hichilema but that UPND will this time give no chance to any trampled-up charges.

PF leadership and some officials have in the past told the people of Zambia that a Tonga will never rule and that HH’s name will never be on the ballot paper.

However, UPND President Hichilema has for the past five years continued to enjoy support from all constituencies across the country with Zambians promising to vote for him because the PF government has failed to attend to their issues as they are busy creating wealth for themselves.

Why is PF Government Seeking IMF Bailout when Copper Price is at all-time high of US$9,000 per metric tonne?

27

By Sean Tembo

1. As Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) it is our considered opinion that the continued attempt by Government to get a bailout loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at a time that the price for copper is at an all-time high of about US$9,000 per metric tonne, is ample evidence that the PF have failed to run this country and need to be retired in the national interest on 12th August this year.

It must be noted that IMF bailout loans are meant for countries that have no resources and are on the brink of total economic collapse. However, Zambia has an abundance of resources and world economic parameters are in our favour due to the advent of electric vehicles which has caused a major surge in the price of copper which is a major component in their manufacture and is our major export commodity.

2. Given the circumstances at hand, our expectations as Patriots for Economic Progress were that the Government would be talking about how best the country should utilize the surge in copper prices for our economic prosperity and not talking about getting an IMF bailout loan.

The fact that the PF and its Government see borrowing as a solution to every national economic problem renders credence to our long held position that the Patriotic Front is a party that is made up of incompetent people that were in group C in class. Therefore, any reasonable Zambian should not expect improvement in the manner that the PF Government will run the affairs of this nation, should Zambians be naive enough to re-elect them back into office.

3. As Patriots for Economic Progress, we wish to appeal to the Zambian people to vote into office a political party that will competently and diligently run the affairs of this nation and which will be able to convert the huge economic potential that Zambia has into actual wealth for the benefit of Zambians. That political party is the Patriots for Economic Progress. The only thing that the PF and its Government are capable of doing is contracting more and more national debt, despite the fact that we have already defaulted on our debt repayment.

Come 12th August, if Zambians insist on re-electing this collection of group C individuals when group A is available, the end result will be continued shrinkage of the economy, unemployment, poverty, squalor and corruption. Zambians have a very important decision to make on 12th August this year. We have already seen what group C is able to do. It is now time to try group A.

Reduction in COVID-19 cases impressive- Chanda

18

Minister of Health Jonas Chanda says the COVID-19 cases requiring admission has continued to reduce with the number being less than one hundred, for the past six days.

Dr Chanda adds that as of today, the country has seen no admissions in Central, Luapula and Western provinces, a similar case with isolation facilities outside Lusaka District in Lusaka Province.

The Minister notes that as the ministry winds down the operations on some of the COVID-19 isolation centres, it has continued taking stock of the equipment and human resource invested, in order for them to be adequately prepared for a possible third wave, which may require scaled up capacity.

He indicated in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that training of health staff in emergency response, remains top priority, not only for a possible COVID-19 third wave but for other eventual disease outbreaks.

“On that note, we wish to wholeheartedly thank all the frontline health workers in the entire response. It has not been easy to work under emergency conditions for over one year now,” he said.

“We thank you for your efforts to save the lives of our people and subsequently turning the situation around while managing the other disease burdens such as infectious and non- communicable including Maternal and Child Health issues.” Dr Chanda added.

And the Minister has announced that his ministry has enhanced its surveillance activities during the long Easter weekend, including in congregate settings such as churches and institutions of higher learning.

He noted that in the past, the Ministry of Health observed a disappointing level of laxity among people gathering at social events and reiterated the need to continue adhering to the five health guidelines, as they remain cardinal in the country’s efforts to fight the pandemic.

“Please note that the COVID-19 public health guidelines have not changed. The five golden rules remain the bedrock of our efforts to curb community transmission. We must maintain our positivity below the recommended 5% across all the provinces if we are to further reduce community transmission,” urged Dr Chanda.

Meanwhile, the Minister has revealed that Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded 181 new cases out of 4,814 tests conducted, representing a 4 percent positivity and bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 88,730.

The Minister of Health has stated that the new cases and positivity broken down by province shows that Central Province recorded 39, Lusaka 31, North-western 22, Luapula Province 20 and 16 for Eastern Province.

Others were 16 from Southern Province, Western 14, Muchinga 10, 8 from Northern and 5 from the Copperbelt Province.

“Regrettably, we recorded three new deaths among them two from Lusaka and one from North-western Province. The cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded now stands at 1,215, classified as 678 COVID deaths and 537 COVID-19 associated deaths,” he highlighted.

And Dr Chanda added that a combined 127 discharges were recorded from both the COVID-19 isolation facilities and home management, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 84,825 representing 96 percent.

The Minister further stated that currently the country has 2,690 active cases, of which 2,610 are under community management and 80 are admitted to COVID-19 isolation facilities.

“Among those admitted, 60 are on Oxygen therapy and 10 are in critical condition,” he said.

Dr Chanda has further appealed to all members of the public to be on guard during this Easter weekend, adding that the reduction in case positivity is not cause for not adhering to the health guidelines.
