600 pupils sent away for failing to pay K50

15

Over 600 pupils have allegedly been sent away, for failing to pay user fees at Kalilwe Primary School in Mumbwa, Central province.

The pupils, who are in Grades 5 upto 7, have been barred from writing their end of term tests, contrary to government’s policy of free education at primary level.

School Headteacher, Patricia Silenge has confirmed the decision to ZANIS, saying only Grades 1 to 4, are writing end of term one tests.

She has explained that the Parents Teachers Association -PTA- at the school agreed to this decision, because all pupils are expected to pay 50 Kwacha, for buying paper to prepare for the tests.

And Mumbwa District Commission, Felix Ndopu who has confirmed the report from the District Education Board Secretary -DEBS- office and has described the school administration’s decision as the highest form of sabotage.

Mr Ndopu however said he will not tolerate civil servants, who are frustrating government policy and inhuman treatment of innocent children, especially that the district recorded poor results for all examination grades last year.

The University Teaching Hospital (UTH) has received a donation of neonatal equipment from a Zambian well-wisher based in the United Kingdom (UK).

Chaka Henderson with other incorporating partners in UK made the donation of assorted items valued at over K30, 000 to the maternity ward at UTH.

The donation comprised of assorted items such as size zero napkins, sanitary towels, and soaps among others.

Mrs Henderson acknowledged that the initiative was driven by her experience as a neonatal mother.

And receiving the donation, Acting Senior Medical Superintendent Mulindi Mwanahamuntu said the material aid will go a long way in caring for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Dr Mwanahamuntu disclosed that the department has an overflow of about 100 babies being attended to, and pauses a challenge for the hospital in terms of staffing and resources.

Head of Department Neonatology Dr. Kunda Kapembwa said the donation means a lot and it will improve service delivery in the neonatology department.

Dr Kapembwa added that lack of material aid has in the past disadvantaged the department in terms of enhancing their core business, which is to aid neonatal babies, through various means, and ensuring that no lives are lost.

The Presidents physical exercises are publicized for a good reason – Mukwita

President Lungu exercising with member of the public

Zambia’s Ambassador to Germany Anthony Mukwita says the publicity given to President Edgar Lungu’s physical exercise regime is intended to communicate the need to remain healthy.

Ambassador Mukwita said as a national leader, President Lungu shares what he does with the rest of the country to create awareness around the importance of physical exercise and its implication for health.

He said health experts have in the past warned that the issue of obesity is not just a problem of some developed countries but a Zambian problem as well.

President Lungu runs several kilometers every day whether he is in State House or out of station with members of the public joining him on several occasions.

The senior diplomat made the remarks in his office when he received Frank Katebe, the German-based Zambian who recently participated in the Berlin half marathon. Katebe was accompanied by his wife Jana, his two children Marie-Kasuba and Louise-Malaika. He was also accompanied by his trainer Michael Rejske.

“Physical exercise has a lot to do with our health as a people and President Lungu has embraced it to inspire the whole country to care about their personal health”, Ambassador Mukwita said.

Katebe and his trainer took part in the 21km race, which saw thousands of participants drawn from over a hundred countries. Adorned in the popular green jersey of the Zambian National Team, Katebe ran to also raise awareness around the plight of Idai cyclone victims of Mozambique.

His wife Jana once worked in Beira, the Mozambican port city that has been hit the most by the cyclone. “I was heartbroken to see the city I know personally reduced to nothing”, Mrs. Katebe said.

Katebe and his trainer Michael are affiliated to a German non-profit-making organization, DLRG (Duetsche Lebensretlungsgesellschaft), which specializes in rescue operations that are water or sea-related.

“So our decision to seek help for the victims of the Idai cyclone was informed by what we do under DLRG”, said Michael who has participated in rescue missions before.

The trio wondered how similar tragedies in the developed world in particular would be sustained in the media for hours, days and weeks on end but covered only briefly when they happen in Africa.

On its part, the Zambian government responded by sending medical supplies to Mozambique in addition to an ongoing initiative in which funds for additional assistance may be donated through an account that has been opened.

Transport and Communications Permanent Secretary Misheck Lungu has revealed that the project to erect 1009 new Communications Towers has reached its peak with over 600 towers constructed so far.

Engineer Lungu said of the 600, around 400 towers have so far been switched on.

He said Zamtel, the company that is implementing the Phase II of the Communication Tower Project has done an exceptionally commendable job in erecting the towers.

Engineer Lungu said the Communication Tower Project is close to President Edgar Lungu’s heart as he does not want any part of Zambia to be left without any mobile phone communication services.

He was speaking this morning when Zamtel handed over the first batch of Bicycles to lucky winners in the Let’s Go Zamtel Bicycle Promotion.

And Engineer Lungu commended Zamtel for launching the Let’s Go Zamtel Bicycle Promotion saying the bicycles being given out will encourage more Zambians to take up cycling.

He said riding bicycles helps in maintaining physical fitness which is key in fighting Non-Communicable Diseases such as Diabetes and Hypertension.
At the same function, Zamtel Chief Executive Officer Mr Sydney Mupeta revealed that Southern Province has recorded the highest number of participants since the promotion was launched two weeks ago.

Mr Mupeta said his company values the support it has continued to receive from its customers hence the launch of the Let’s Go Zamtel Bicycle Promotion in an effort to reward the customer.

“Two weeks ago, we launched the “Lets’ Go Zamtel” promotion as a way of rewarding our loyal customers for their continued support to the business. The promotion was also intended to give our customers prizes that will add value to their lives and their businesses,” Mr Mupeta said.

“I am happy to announce that today we have invited 10 of our winners from Lusaka to join us this morning to officially receive their bicycles and celebrate with us. In the coming few days, our regional offices will hand over the bicycles to the deserving winners in those respective regions,” he said.

No Walter and Tshimenga for Nkana’s Confed Cup quarterfinal decider

2

Nkana have suffered a huge setback ahead of this weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal decider away in Tunisia against CS Sfaxien with strikers Fred Tshimenga and Walter Bwalya both rule-out of that match.

Bwalya and Tshimenga, who have scored three and four continental goals this season respectively, will miss Sunday’s quarterfinal, last leg match in Sfax due to injuries.

Tshimenga sustained a foot injury in training on Tuesday on the eve of the team’s departure for Tunisia.

Bwalya is expected to be out of action for at least three weeks due to a knee injury he sustained in the 2-1 first leg win over Sfaxien on April 7 in Kitwe that saw him limp-off in the 59th minute.

The duo join winger Harrison Chisala on Nkana’s long-term injury list who missed the first leg win due to a knee injury he sustained in domestic action in Nkana’s 2-1 home loss to Lumwana Radiants that will see him sidelined for a month.

But the good news is midfielder Shadrick Malambo who was limped off in the 68th minute of the win over Sfaxien has recovered and traveled with Nkana on Wednesday night to Tunisia.

“In football, we expect the unexpected we have to plan for that one, we cannot be crying over whatever it has happened [injuries] so we have a plan for it,” Nkana assistant coach Manfred Chabinga said.

Despite the teams attacking deficiencies heading into the last leg, Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi has dropped striker Festus Mbewe leaving captain Ronald Kampamba as the only potent attacking option on the trip to Tunisia.

Also axed from away game is highly-rated goalkeeper Allan Chibwe who has been relegated after some inconsistent continental and domestic displays for Nkana.

Team:

Goalkeepers: Moses Mapulanga, Kelvin Malunga

Defenders: Joseph Musonda, Ben Banh, Musa Mohammed, Hassan Ramadhan, Moses Nyondo, Gift Zulu, Richard Ocran

Midfielders: Shadreck Malambo, Shadreck Musonda, Simon Bwalya, Bwalya Kasonde, Duncan Otieno, Lyson Thole, Obed Masumbuko, Jacob Ngulube, Kelvin Mubanga

Parties commended for peaceful campaigns in Roan and Bahati Constituency

Human Rights Commission

The Human Rights Commission has commended participating Political parties, their supporters and the Police in Roan and Bahati Constituency for adhering to the provisions of the Public Order Act ahead of today’s parliamentary by-elections.

Human Rights Commission spokesperson Mwelwa Muleya says preliminary observations by the Commission have revealed that the campaigns in Roan and Bahati Constituencies have been generally peaceful and has called for continued restraint from interfering with the right of the electorate to vote.

Mr. Muleya said the Commission has been on the ground monitoring the election campaigns in both Roan and Bahati Constituencies and has observed that all participating political parties were to a large extent allowed to freely campaign.

He said the Zambia Police Service has respected the Right to Freedom of Assembly and professionally played its role of maintaining law and order in line with their constitutional and legal obligations and mandates.

Mr. Muleya said the Commission particularly noted with a sense of encouragement that the police refrained from the bad practice of imposing total restrictions to the right of the opposition to conduct meetings whenever either the Republican or the Vice Republican Presidents were in an area.

He said one of the best practices in facilitating peaceful campaigns in Roan and Bahati Constituencies has been the facilitation of political dialogue by the police and the Electoral Commission of Zambia to either prevent or resolve any emerging or potential conflict in the campaign schedules and the willingness by political parties to respect the law.

Mr. Muleya said the peaceful campaigns further confirm the fact that fundamental democratic principles of non-violence, co-existence, tolerance, mutual respect and respect for human rights and freedoms as required in a multi-party democracy and pluralistic society, were possible in Zambia.

He has since called on everyone to continue restraining themselves from engaging in unlawful activities that have the potential to undermine the prevailing peaceful campaigns and the right of the electorate to vote for their preferred candidates on 11th April 2019.

First Lady Esther Lungu says every Zambian should be concerned with the elimination of HIV and AIDS by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mrs Lungu noted that it was not far-fetched to conclude that almost every family in the country had lost a member to AIDS, and as such it was the duty of all well- meaning Zambians to participate in efforts aimed at eliminating AIDS.

The First Lady urged all citizens to come on board and consolidate their efforts in ending the global epidemic.

Mrs. Lungu said this to journalists in Livingstone on Tuesday ahead of the launch of the ‘Zambia Ending AIDS’ and ‘Free to Shine’ Campaign set for this Thursday at the Livingstone Golf Club.

The First Lady will be joined by her counterparts from Botswana and Mozambique, Neo Masisi and Mrs Isaura Nyusi respectively.

“We want as African First Ladies, to roll out the program because it affects all of us, not just Africa is affected; HIV and AIDS is a global epidemic. We want this to be tackled left, right and centre, this is why we are here in Livingstone,” she said.

Mrs. Lungu said the launch of the two campaigns would be beneficial for Zambia as they shared a common goal of fighting HIV and AIDS.

Earlier, Southern Province Permanent Secretary Mwangala Liomba said the fight against HIV and AIDS was started way back but was not close to being won due to various challenges.

Mr. Liomba said one million, two hundred thousand Zambians (1.2 million Zambians) were living with HIV and this signified that there were gaps in interventions aimed at curbing the scourge.

And National HIV Treatment and Care Commitment Professor Lloyd Mulenga said the HIV burden in Zambia was still high with 998,000 people on Anti-Retroviral Therapy, and 200,000 yet to be treated for HIV.

The ‘Free to Shine’ Campaign is an initiative of the wives of African Heads of State and Governments who have pledged commitment to end Child AIDS and keeping Mothers alive towards the global goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

The campaign theme is “Transforming Africa through prioritizing children, adolescents and mothers in the fight against HIV.”

Government is in the process of digitalizing the issuance of Green National Registration Cards (NRCs) in order to enhance service delivery.

SMART Zambia National Coordinator Martine Mtonga disclosed this in Kabwe yesterday when he addressed Heads of Government departments at Kabwe lodge.

Dr Mtonga also noted that government has approved the Smart Zambia Master Plan and implored civil servants to embrace the use of technology in their day to day operations.

He said the use of the Information Communication Technology (ICTs) had already started showing dividends as the electronic payslips had revolutionized the payment system with over 90 percent of the civil servants having been captured.

Dr Mtonga said hospitals would also be digitalized soon so that the use of computers is embraced in health institutions.

He further added that all government departments would be added to the Government Wide Area Network that is aimed at enhancing service delivery but warned that abuse of the system would not be tolerated as there will be strict monitoring in place.

Earlier, Central Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Chomba urged officers to heed the call to embrace technology and avoid lagging behind.

He urged officers not to hesitate to approach him where they faced challenges so that he could coordinate with SMART Zambia in order to achieve a smooth implementation of the use of the ICT programme in the province.

“No inflammatory language designed to incite violence or use of tribal ,ethnic or religious means to incite violence in Bahati and Roan constituencies was observed during their campaigns” he said.

Zambia on course with infectious disease control

0

The Africa Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases for Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA) says Zambia is on course to diagnose the symptoms and signs of infectious diseases such as Ebola, Anthrax, and other infectious diseases.

Centre leader, Professor Bernard Hang’ombe, has explained that the establishment of the first ever infectious disease research Centre at the University of Zambia (UNZA) is helping the country to strengthen the capacity of researchers on infectious diseases.

Professor Hang’ombe has told media that about 70 percent of the infectious diseases that the country experiences is as a result of human and animal contact.

He explains that as such, government with support from the World Bank established a regional Centre of excellence at the higher learning institution, in order to train students, researchers, and veterinary officers under the school of veterinary medicine, on how to handle infectious diseases.

He adds on that the Centre is also training students to understand the human-animal relation, in order to provide knowledge on how people can avoid contracting animal infections such as anthrax.

Professor Hang’ombe has further added that the Centre provides knowledge on infectious disease not only to Zambia but the Southern and Eastern Africa Region.

He notes that with the Centre that is housed in Zambia, it is hoped that line sectors such as the agricultural sector, will take advantage of the facility, in order to combat any possible outbreaks of animal diseases such as the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) which recently affected three provinces of the country.

Professor Hang’ombe has explained that the Centre is designed to bring scientific diagnostic and treatment of infectious diseases instead of the ordinary speculative way of doing things where some diseases are even being treated as mysterious infections.

He explains that the Centre is also helping the country to better understand how to treat an outbreak of such infectious diseases.

The Africa Centre of Excellence in Infectious Diseases of Humans and Animals (ACEIDHA), is a government program launched in 2018.

Arrows draw to dash Zesco’s top stop dreams

4

Zesco United were denied an opportunity to go top of the FAZ Super Division Pool A on Wednesday by Red Arrows who held them to a 1-1 away draw at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

Victory on Wednesday would have seen the defending champions go top of the log for the first time this season.

But Zesco will have to settle for third place on 19 points and are now just two points behind leaders and unbeaten Kabwe Warriors after ten and eleven games played respectively.

Meanwhile, it was Zesco who took the lead in the 57th minute when Jesse Were whipped-in a free kick to net his fifth league goal of the season.

But the lead lasted just eleven minutes when Arrows in-form captain Bruce Musakanya struck to earn Arrows a point and his third goal of the season ensure they stayed at number five on 17 points.
