Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo has warned people against politicizing the housing units for the men and women in uniform which government is constructing countrywide through AVIC international.

He was speaking at his office after officials from his ministry toured Mwembeshi and Lilayi housing units which are under construction.

Mr. Kampyongo has however directed the Police Command to always distribute the housing units fairly to the men and women in uniform.

Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex says the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust is a platform designed to connect and support young people who are carrying out outstanding work in their communities and across the commonwealth countries.

Prince Harry said the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust was established by her grandmother, the queen, as a platform where the voices of the youths can be heard and taken seriously.

The visiting Prince was speaking at Circus Zambia today when he addressed youths under the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust who include CAMFED, Asikana Network, Agent of Change Foundation, Women’s Economic Empowerment Project and CAMA leaders from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

He stated that the Trust is also designed to help youths share their experiences and insights with each other in order to create the maximum impact in their lives.

“About a year ago, I was standing on another stage, this time at Buckingham Palace, alongside my grandmother Her Majesty the Queen to launch The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, a platform designed to connect and support young people who are carrying out outstanding work in their communities and across the commonwealth,” he said.

The Queen has travelled to every country in the Commonwealth, and throughout her life, she has been massively encouraged by what she has seen young people achieve,” he said.

Prince Harry stressed that as President of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust and Youth Ambassador of the Queen’s Commonwealth, he has seen the great strides youth and women organisations are taking in transforming other people’s lives.

The Prince emphasized that the purpose of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust is to champion, fund and connect young people as a global movement for good, with young people leading the way.

He commended the youth leaders for carrying out the Queen’s vision with pride and fearlessness in pursuit of what is right.

And Circus Zambia Co-founder, Gift Chansa, said young people regardless of where they hail from have dreams that need to be nurtured and supported for them to be actualized.

Gift Chansa who was born and raised in Chibolya, a slum in Zambia known for drugs and criminality, said his organisation was formed to help youths stay away from bad vices by ensuring that they focus on productive activities.

Meanwhile CAMA Malawi Core Trainer, Fatima Frank said her organisation is supporting girls to remain in school by providing funding and sanitary pads.

Fatima told an emotional story of how she struggled to convince traditional leaders to do away with the belief of keeping women in homes as domestic servants instead of taking them to school.

She pointed out that girls just like boys deserve to be educated if poverty is to be alleviated in Africa.

The Prince is in Zambia for a two day visit to attend the festivities of the end of the world war centenary and to conduct business on behalf of the Commonwealth as the youth ambassador of the family of nations linked to the United Kingdom.

President Edgar Lungu has commuted more death penalties to life imprisonment than any other serving Zambian President.

Justice Minister Given Lubinda said this decision not to sign death penalties has earned Zambia’s reputation internationally as an abolitionist country with regards to implementing the death penalty.

Mr. Lubinda was speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia yesterday when he transited to Rome to attend a conference on the 10th Anniversary of the campaign against the death penalty by an organisation called St. Egidio.

He said Zambia had gone further to vote in the affirmative at the United Nations –UN- on maintenance of a moratorium of the death penalty.

Mr. Lubinda said President Lungu made the bold decision in 2016 to allow the Embassy of the Republic of the Republic of Zambia in New York to start voting in the affirmative after having abstained from voting on the moratorium for years.

He said despite the death Penalty still being upheld in the constitution, no President has signed the death penalty since 1998.

Mr.Lubinda clarified that unlike other laws that can easily be amended; the death penalty was part of the bill of rights that could only be amended through a referendum.

And the Minister said Zambia has adequate laws to guarantee the safety of investors in the country.

He said it was unfortunate that some Zambians where taking the law in their own hands by attacking foreigners who had come in the country to invest.

Mr. Lubinda said the recent xenophobic attacks on the Chinese where unfortunate and urged Zambia to use better channels in channelling their grievances. .

The Minister further said Zambia should resist the temptation of being used in what he termed an economic conflict against the Chinese.

He said it was unfortunate that some political leaders including parliamentarians where inciting Zambians to rise against government’s decision to engage the Chinese in some developmental projects.

The Minister was received at Bole International Airport by Ministry of Justice Permanent Secretary, Andrew Nkunika and Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ms. Susan Sikaneta.

Vice President Inonge Wina

Vice President Inonge Wina has lamented that Gender Based Violence (GBV) has continued to have adverse impact on society.

And Mrs. Wina says the 16 Days of Activism against the vice is a global struggle to rid society of inhuman treatment on others.

Meanwhile, the vice president has pointed out that government has put in place necessary legal and policy framework to address GBV and that it has so far established 6 fast track courts for quick dispensation of justice.

Speaking in Bangkok, Thailand today, Mrs Wina said GBV does not only affect women , but that a growing number of men have also fallen prey to the vice as they also endure verbal and physical abuse.

Mrs. Wina explained that honest and open practical steps must be taken by every member of society to end abusive behavior towards one another, adding that
such attitude is dehumanizing.

She stressed that GBV comes in many forms such as physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual and sometimes in subtle ways that leaves the victim feeling like a lesser being.

She challenged the church and other faith based organisations to allocate time to address violence in homes during services.

The Vice President also commended traditional rulers who have responded positively to the calls to discourage the abuse of young girls.

Mrs. Wina called on the community to become whistle blowers by reporting any suspicious activity of GBV in their neighborhoods to the police.

She called on all stakeholders to compliment government in addressing GBV in the country.

The global GBV campaign runs every year from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to December 10, which is Human Rights Day.

It was initiated in 1991 by the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute, held by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) at Rutgers University

Undebatable need for Government to reduce pump fuel prices

27

It goes without saying that when the price of crude oil on the international market goes up,the fuel pump price in Zambia is escalated at the speed of lightening and our leaders spread themselves in all media institutions and all available platforms across the country to justify the hike. However, the situation is never the same when the cost of crude oil at the international market is reduced. Our government does not reciprocate when crude oil costs go down.

Our government does not reciprocate when crude oil costs go down.

It is quite sad that when Zambians have for a very long time been subjected to hardships as a result of the trickledown effects due to high fuel pump price in the country.

Since the hike (especially the recent one) in the fuel pump price was attributed to the high cost of crude oil on the international market, it is just not only fair and responsible but also a mark of good and servant leadership for the government to be empathetic for its citizens and allow them benefit from the reduced prices. It is common knowledge that due to high cost of fuel pump price, the cost of doing business (such as the cost of production, transportation, among others) and leads to reduced profits and losses at some point. This has over a period of time led to companies/institutions downsizing their workforces by lay out workers a situation that has led to joblessness and huge unemployment levels. The most affected by this are the Young People who are the heart of the national and the engine of development. Further even the Young People that may want to engage in self-employment cannot do it due to the cost of doing business which comes as a result of high cost of fuel in the country.

Why is it that the government always burdens its citizens to pay the huge costs of crude oil at the international market through high fuel pump price locally? With the reduction of crude oil on the international market and our government not reciprocating by reducing the fuel pump price, it means that government is saving lots of money. Where then are these funds and how are they being used.

OYV therefore demands that government reduces the cost of fuel in the country without delay as this will allow many players on the economic scene and also resuscitate many businesses that could have folded up. This in the long run will entail government being real and practical about good governance, empowerment of Young People and women as espoused in the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP)

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) will soon introduce enhanced Zambian Banknotes meant to ensure high quality notes and coins circulate.

GRANDSTAND: The burden of improving Shepolopolo

Shepolopolo’s back-to-the-drawing- board moment at the end of their 2018 Women’s AFCON lies at its roots.

It is one thing to qualify for a major competition and set grand targets but Bruce Mwape’s job was clearly not an easy one after those two-and-a-half high level matches Shepolpolo played in Ghana.

Offensively, Shepolopolo showed they could hold their own even without the injured Barbara Banda when 18 year old Rachael Kundananji stepped up with her raw but ruthless power with shades of a certain Jacob Mulenga to score three goals at the tournament.

Kundananji showed true high level tournament temperament and was comfortable in her zone after a slow start in the qualifiers where she scored one goal but heated-up in the pre-AWCON build-up with a hat-trick in a 3-2 friendly win against Ghana.

Goalkeeper Hazel Nali too showed she was a dependable pair of hands with her grasp of the technical requirements between the posts and it will be quite hard to knock her off her perch as she continues to develop as Shepolopolo’s number one.

However, the clubs have a lot of work cut out with regards imparting the fundamentals both defensively and in midfield on that side of the women’s game.

The team did not have imposing defensive midfielder, a number one staple of any Zambian team, plus a creative midfielder for that matter while their aerial threat from set-piece play was naught, and one cannot solely bank on Mary Mwakapila’s enterprising wing play.

Again, defensively, the backline was never comfortable or imposing with the ball at their feet and in the air and that will remain the team’s underbelly going forward in Zambian women’s footballs painful development.

In short, the onus is not on coach Mwape to develop these players but the club’s to aggressively lighten his burden if Shepolopolo is to move beyond their best showing at a women’s AFCON this year and the comfort zone of its customary COSAFA Women’s Cup semifinal achievements.

UPND calls on Zambia Police to leave Prime TV alone

65

UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson, Grace Chivube has called on the Police Service to “leave Prime TV alone” and instead concentrate on arresting criminals.

“We as UPND women wish to find out the intent of the police to issue a search warrant to Prime TV and demand for footage bordering on two UPND MPs allegedly defaming Lungu and another one demanding for footage of UPND youths allegedly accusing them of accusing the police.

Ms Chivube said it was disheartening that the Government has resorted to harassing, gagging, intimidating and assaulting the press.

“How do you police decide to threaten Prime TV with closure when it is the only platform that ordinary and marginalized Zambians use to air their grievances. It is the only platform on which people go to complain about the rampant injustices in the country and it reports things as they are compared to ZNBC whose theme for now is PF.

She said now that the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) was a mouthpiece of the Government, after the closure of the Post Newspapers, it had become difficult for divergent views to be heard but thanks to prime, muvi, mast and digger

She also thanked the people of Petauke, Eastern province for electing a UPND Councillor.

“We are so thankful to you the people of Petauke for voting for progress through electing a United Party for National Development councillor. This is another sign that Zambia is one nation. Thank you for voting for a party led by a farmer, Mr Hichilema who understands your struggles as a farmers. The decision that you have made is a right decision,” she said.

“You, people of Petauke, hold on to your Councillor and protect him from being bought by the Patriotic Front (PF). Don’t listen to Dora Siliya because she is a member of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD)”.

She also accused Siliya of bringing confusion in the PF which she castigated at the timecof Late Michael Sata as President.

Ms Chivube has also called on Dora Siliya to resign following the failure by police to arrest HH over the alleged sale of ZAFFICO when he appeared for interrogation at Ndola Central Police on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.

“Dora Siliya, you should resign! You told the people that if HH is not jailed over the ZAFFICO issue you would resign. You, Dora, insulted late Sata but they never resigned. And now that HH wasn’t jailed, you can resign now as you said!”

She, however challenged Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dora Siliya, who earlier threatened to resign if HH is arrested to do so now that HH is a free man.
