Zambians are tired of unending corruption in PF government – Msoni

All People Congress Leader Mason Msoni says Zambians are fatigued by the unending corruption in President Edgar Lungu’s government.

Mr. Msoni says President Lungu’s lack of political will to help tackle corruption and his continued shielding of criminal suspects still serving in government has made the fight against graft extremely difficult for law enforcement officers.

He said the fight against corruption should not be left to law enforcement officers alone Zambia is to eradicate the vices and has asked Citizens to join the struggle against graft.

Mr. Msoni said corruption takes away money meant for the much needed social services and ends up in private pockets.

“In essence it is taxpayers money criminals are stealing with impunity and putting in their own pockets for personal use. We also think that the reckless abuse of public funds must now be curtailed by ensuring that those who have made it a habit to abuse public resources are brought to book”, he added.

Mr. Msoni said it is prudent to remind ourselves as citizens that we have the power to effect a citizens arrest or to apprehend any suspect found committing crimes against the people of Zambia.

He said it is now incumbent upon ourselves as citizens to join hands with law enforcement officers and help bring sanity to our country by volunteering to join the struggle against graft.

“We should all frown upon the corrupt and denounce perpetrators in the strongest terms as opposed to hero worshipping criminals and offering them support in droves when escorting them to court”, he added.

Mr. Msoni added that this attitude of giving criminals solidarity is tantamount to glorifying criminality and sending a wrong signal to other criminals still committing crimes in government.

There has been an increase in chronic diseases or non-communicable diseases (NCD) in Zambia over the recent years that include Cardiovascular disease, Hypertension, Diabetes mellitus (Type II), Cancers, Chronic respiratory diseases, epilepsy among others (Annual bulletin ministry of health Zambia 2012). Non-communicable diseases or chronic disease according to the United Nations (UN) is a disease or medical condition that is non-infectious and non-transmissible (2018). At a global scale NCDs kill 41 million people each year equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. The ages most affected is between 30-69 years and over 85% of these “premature” deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (UN 2018). Furthermore, Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths of 17.9 million people annually followed by cancers at 9.0 million, respiratory disease at 3.9 million and diabetes at 1.6 million.

NCDs tend to be of long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behavioural factors. Among the risk factors include tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol, family history and unhealthy
diets. Detection, screening and treatment of NDCs as well as palliative care are key components of the response to NCDs. In Zambia hypertension is on top of the list as the most reason of visitation to health facilities (MOH 2012).

Statics according to the united nations shows that there is over 70% lack of community awareness on NDCs in Zambia causing a further burden of premature death. This gap of lack of awareness is where ROMAKAKI Trust interest lies. ROMAKAKI Trust is a charity run by members of Chilonga schools of nursing alumni. The trust was founded in 2017 after the newly built school burnt down in October 2016 due to an electrical fault. This brought the spirit of unity among the ex-Chilonga Schools of Nursing students and have since continued positively contributing towards rebuilding of the school. There has been also tremendous
support from the government and public. The Trust has organised fundraising ventures that included the walk from Northmead to East park mall in 2017 and fundraising dinner gala in October 2017 that was graced by Honourable Jean Kapata venued at intercontinental hotel of Lusaka.

The Trust has the main goal of contributing positively in any way possible in order to realise a healthy Zambia. This year our mission is to educate the public on NDCs as the above figures are so alarming. This mission has just kicked off with a health check set up at Levy mall on the 21st of June 2019. The turnout among shoppers was overwhelming that included our Honourable minister to the Vice president Ms Sylvia Chalikosa. The health check is conducted by qualified nurses of Chilonga Schools of Nursing alumni giving back to the community as volunteers having the passion to foster healthy lives in Zambia. Our next
health check point will be at mandahill next month date to be communicated. We are also having a fundraising dinner gala in November this year date and venue to be communicated. We encourage members of the public to take advantage of the health
checks as they transform their lives through healthy lifestyle and choices. A healthy Zambia begins with you and me.

Zesco United legendary goalkeeper and captain Jacob Banda is thrilled to win his 8th FAZ Super Division title with the Ndola side.

Banda on Saturday secured his place in Zambian football annuals after he single-handedly guided Zesco to their eighth Super Division title.

He made two stops and converted Zesco’s final spot kick to see the defending champions beat Green Eagles 3-1 on penalties following a scoreless 90 minutes in the league playoff final at Woodlands Stadium.

“I am very happy to win the eighth league title. To the supporters and to all people I am humbled,” Banda said.

He now becomes the first goalkeeper to win eight Super Division league titles with a single club since Zesco collected their first in 2007.

“My secret is discipline, hard work and being focused. Without working hard you can’t progress,” he said.

Banda has been consistent – playing at the top level of Zambian football for over a decade.

“Football is our livelihood, so I take it seriously. We sustain ourselves and families through football,” he added.

Banda is one title behind his club-mate Winston Kalengo who has won a combined nine FAZ Super Division titles with Zesco and Zanaco.

Bweengwa UPND Member of Parliament, Michelo Kasauta has dispelled public fears that UPND members of Parliament were divided on the National Dialogue Forum (NDF) resolutions and likely to betray the cause on the floor of Parliament.

Mr.Kasauta said people should not doubt the capacity and sincerity of UPND Members of Parliament with regards to matters of national and public interest because they always represent the will of the people.

Speaking when he featured on Live Radio’s Live issues radio program this morning, Mr.Kasauta said UPND Parliamentarians have always stood on the side of the people and will never let them down.

“We agree as UPND MPs that some people might criticise us but one thing we can assure you is that we are more resolved and united than ever to defeat the constitutional Amendment bill once brought on the floor of Parliament. I can assure the public that the bill will not go anywhere. We are determined and we shall stand with the people,” he said.

The Bweengwa lawmaker further said the Party position on the NDF resolutions is very clear and was in line with the wishes of the people hence any departure from it would be suicidal.

He added that President Hakainde Hichilema’s guidance to the parliamentarians on both sides of divide was timely and non partisan but aimed at ensuring that Parliament remains representative of the people.

Mr.Kasauta said supporting the resolutions of the NDF in parliament by UPND MPs would be the worst national betrayal for many generations to come hence their resolve to defeat it now to avoid posterity judging the current Parliament harshly.

“We have an opportunity once again to stand with the people. In 1990,the UNIP dominated Parliament stood with the people and time has come for us to stand with the people and ensure that their wishes and aspirations are respected in line with the constitution which recognises the people as being the authority behind the constitution,” he said.

Justice Minister Given Lubinda is this in sitting of Parliament expected to table in the house a constitutional amendment bill to allow the Republican Constitution number two of 2016 be amended to include NDF resolutions.

The bill will however require two-thirds of the total number of MPs to pass through and the opposition UPND has successfully rallied MPs from among independents and the PF to reject the Bill.

Over 1 000 residents in Chingola defy court order and refuse to vacate Land given to a Foreign Investor

Over 1 000 residents of Soweto area in Chingola have refused to vacate their land. This follows Ministry of Lands Northern Region Senior Lands Officer Cecilia Chivunda’s directive that they vacate the piece of land to pave way for a foreign investor.

However, the directive is silent on the fate of the Luano-Kapisha Mini Hospital and the Luano-Kapisha Police Post which government built on the disputed land that has been granted to Mapalo Quarries.

According to a letter addressed to Chingola Town Clerk by Ms. Chivunda on 18th June 2019, the Soweto residents have been asked to leave and will only be provided with transport as they depart the disputed land.

But the residents say they will not comply with the directive because they have been on the disputed land for a long time and that the investor only came in recently and took them to court.

Luano Ward Development Committee Chairperson Bandwell Kapepa says the directive by the Ministry of Lands is suspicious because the people who are being threatened with eviction were not consulted.

And Nchanga Member of Parliament Chali Chilombo has urged the residents of Soweto not to move because President Edgar Lungu would not want to see his own people suffer at the expense of an investor.

Addressing the residents, Mr. Chilombo said he will take the matter up and ensure the residents are protected.

In October last year, the Kitwe High Court ruled that the land belongs to Mapalo Quarries and that the residents should vacate it.

Siavonga District Commissioner Lovemore Kanyama has warned people that acquired land from the ministry of lands or the local authority in the district to develop it or risk losing out.

Mr. Kanyama has since given a three-month ultimatum for the landowners to develop the plots.

The Siavonga District Commissioner says huge tracts of land in Siavonga have been left undeveloped despite people have acquired the pieces of land 3 to 4 years ago.

Mr. Kanyama told ZNBC news in a statement that the District has failed to receive meaningful development due to people failing to develop land.

Lwandamina toasts 2019 league title win

Zesco coach George Lwandamina says Green Eagles were worthy opponents in Saturday’s 2019 FAZ Super Division playoff final but that the league title was always destined to return to Ndola.

Zesco retained their FAZ Super Division title on June 29 after beating Eagles 3-1 on post-match penalties following a 0-0 fulltime result at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

The result saw Zesco win their eighth league title and collect their third successive FAZ Super Division crown.

“It was a very tough game they really wanted to take it Southern Province but doesn’t this Cup belong to Kitwe, Ndola or Lusaka, somewhere in those lines?” Lwandamina said.

“Anyway, it was a worthy final, they (Green Eagles) have really improved so much and we just hope they will do better next time. This time around it was ours.”

Saturday’s result saw Eagles hopes of becoming the first club from Southern Province to win the FAZ Super Division dashed.

However, both Zesco and Eagles will represent Zambia in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League that kicks off this August.

Eagles will be making their first appearance in the competition after making their continental debut in the 2018/2019 CAF Confederation Cup where they made a second round exit last December.

Makwaza played and coach Mufulira Wanderers and is one of Zambia’s longest serving captain’s from 1965 to 1975.

President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa were yesterday afternoon conferred with honorary doctorate degrees in law by the University of Zambia (UNZA) for, among other things, their exceptional leadership and upholding the rule of law.

The two leaders received their honorary degrees at a ceremony held by the University of Zambia in Lusaka.

Notably, civil rights activist Laura Miti said President Lungu must decline the good governance honorary doctorate if indeed the university is planning to confer him.

“If there is ever a time one hopes a rumour making the rounds is fake news, it this story that the University of Zambia plans to award President Lungu with an honorary doctorate in good governance. Good governance Even he would refuse it, kaleza. They should give him one for encouraging health and fitness pela, if they must. These things must ring true” Miti said.

He told Reporters that Universities like Harvard boast of having produced many Presidents in the United States of America wondering why UNZA should not be proud to have produced three Presidents.

Mr. Malanji said UNZA has produced several leaders across Africa who are currently serving in high positions in their countries.

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa has returned to Zimbabwe after concluding his one-day official working visit to Zambia.

Vice President Inonge Wina has revealed that overwhelming numbers of United Party for National Development -UPND ward councillor are applying to join the Patriotic Front (PF).

Ms. Wina says the PF-Secretariat is being flooded with such applications by a vast number of UPND Councillors.

She observed that the UPND Councillors have realised that their party has no future.

Ms. Wina has dispelled allegations that the PF is bribing UPND Councillors in North-western Province and other parts of the country to ditch their party.

She was responding to Kabompo members of parliament Ambrose Lufuma during the Vice President’s Question Session in parliament.

Meanwhile Ms Wina expressed confidence that unnecessary by-elections will be curtailed once the constitution and electoral laws are amended.

The NDF was constituted to facilitate the amendment of the Constitution and other subsidiary laws.

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has partially lifted the suspension on the Road Service Licence for Scorpion Buses.

RTSA Head of Public Relations Frederick Mubanga says the partial lifting is restricted to only FIVE buses that passed inspection tests and installed with Global Position System -GPS- devices.

Mr. Mubanga says the agency also carried out a re-test of eight drivers that passed the exercise.

He said the partial lifting of the license follows the operators meeting part of the conditions set by the agency to uplift the road safety profile of Scorpion Bus.

Mr. Mubanga however said in a statement that RTSA will revoke the operator’s licence if they abrogate the conditions of the partial lifting of the suspension.

On April 17, 2019, a Scorpion Bus was involved in an accident which claimed 14 lives on the Chingola-Solwezi road and this prompted RTSA to suspend the operator’s Licence.

Government assures of prompt delivery of social amenities

3

Government has reaffirmed its commitment towards the successful delivery of social amenities to people across the country.

Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Assistant Director for Human Resource Lita Mwale says government will continue taking social Protection Programs to the people in order to alleviate poverty.

Ms Mwale said the ongoing data and information collection mission on the social protection programs in Luapula Province will help in the enhancement of the program.

She explained that the food security pack, social cash transfer scheme and women village banking, are among the social protection programmes that have contributed to the reduction of vulnerability levels among the people.

“Government remains resolute to providing vital social protection programmes such as village banking, food security pack and social cash transfer. We are here at Malombola village in Chief Bangweulu Kasoma to assess the impact of these programmes and if there is need to scale up,” she stressed.

And Samfya District Commissioner Nason Bwalya said the social protection programmes are faring well in his district.

Mr Bwalya told the delegation from the Joint Annual Review on Social Protection Programmes that there is urgent need to upscale the programme in the district.

And Asa Mukanda, a mother of ten children of Malombola village chief Kasoma Bangweulu hailed government for introducing women empowerment programmes in the area.

She disclosed that before the empowerment, she went through a lot of abuse from her husband due to lack of income generation, a situation she now describes as a thing of the past.

Another beneficiary of Social Cash Transfer (SCT) scheme, Mweni Landislaus, of Chitambala village called on other beneficiaries of the social protection programmes to enroll for adult education, in order to advance their learning and understanding capabilities.

Mr. Landislaus noted that once the beneficiaries are taught how to read and write, they will be able to use the money thoughtfully.

The Joint team from government line ministries and stakeholders such as International Labor Organisation, United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), World Bank and United Nations, is in Luapula Province to assess the social protection programmes being carried out in the region.

Today’s Message: Don’t Delay

4

Today’s Scripture

“I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.”

(Psalm 119:60, NKJV)

Don’t Delay

Isn’t it interesting how easy it is to put things off? We plan on doing something. We have good intentions. We just plan to do it later. “One day I’m going to start exercising. One day I’m going to get my finances in order. One day I’m going to forgive that person who hurt me.” The problem with this kind of thinking is that “one day” never comes.

There will always be some reason to keep delaying it. Is there something in your heart that you know you need to do? Maybe God has been dealing with you, and you keep putting it off. You think, “As soon as I get through this busy season, I’ll spend more time with my family.

As soon as I get a pay raise, I’ll start tithing my income. As soon as my child gets out of diapers, I’m going to get my family back in church.” But friend, good intentions don’t equal obedience. The quicker you do what you feel down in your spirit, the happier you’re going to be. Don’t let unfinished business keep you from God’s best. Step out. Obey His voice and walk in the blessing He has for you!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your patience and grace toward me. Search my heart. Show me the way to go. I choose to obey Your voice quickly and honor You in all that I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
