Global #WikiGap campaign for International Women’s Day 2018 activated in Zambia

Wiki Breakfast

As part of the International Women’s Day celebration, Women’s History Museum of Zambia and the Embassy of Sweden in Lusaka, in cooperation with Wikipedia and BongoHive, have joined the global #WikiGap campaign which aims to improve the representation of articles by and about women on Wikipedia. The initiative’s goal is to highlight women profiles, experts and role models in Zambia, and help to make the internet more gender-equal.

On 7th March, the Women’s History Museum and the Embassy of Sweden joined the global #WikiGap initiative by aligning the articles in Zambia to the campaign, and a breakfast was hosted by the Embassy of Sweden to celebrate the subjects of Wiki Women project in Zambia as part of highlighting International Women’s Day. The Wikipedians, members of the media and a number of the women profiled were present. The list of women include Cynthia Zukas, Linda Kasonde and Nsofwa Petronella Sampa.

“I am honoured to have been selected and I feel the weight of generations of histories of women that have never been recorded ”, said Linda Kasonde, President of the Law Association of Zambia and one of the subjects documented.

The Embassy of Sweden in Lusaka has supported the project in line with Sweden’s feminist foreign policy, which is based on the ambition to strengthen women’s and girls’ rights, representation and resources.

On 8th March – International Women’s Day – we will be joined by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Swedish embassies in the global campaign #WikiGap which aims to improve the representation of articles by and about women on Wikipedia. Parallel events will be organised in more than 40 countries, from Sweden to Vietnam, Egypt and Colombia, together with local actors and partners.

There are four times more articles about men than women on Wikipedia globally, and nine out of ten Wikipedia editors are men. We want to change this and close the internet gender gap. During our #WikiWomen edit-a-thon that took place on 26-28 February in Lusaka, about 40 Zambian writers were trained to become Wikipedia contributors and they have been submitting content on Zambian women for the past one week.

“The lack of gender equality is a universal problem and everyone gains by changing it. Research, our own experience and the experience of others show that gender equality contributes to greater wellbeing and peaceful societies,” said Henrik Cederin, Ambassador of Sweden in Zambia.

The Women’s History Museum is working to forge partnerships with various stakeholders to mainstream and functionalise historical narratives. The Museum will be announcing a list of projects and activities that will be designed as public and private partnerships with various organisations.

Co-founders of the Women’s History Museum Samba Yonga and Mulenga Kapwepwe have been working to create joint collaborations and implement innovative and inclusive ideas that will highlight the important work of documenting history.

The Zambia Airports Corporation Limited has donated 2000 sanitary pads to 350 Girls in Lusaka under the Menstruation Matters project, an initiative that seeks to reduce the dropout rate of girl pupils due to not being able to afford sanitary pads.

During a handover ceremony held at Lubuto Library Partners Model Library, Garden Compound, Zambia Airports Corporation Limited Communications and Brand Manager, Mweembe Sikaulu said they were happy to learn that ‘Menstruation Matters’ helps girls from poor social economic backgrounds reduce absenteeism from school through the simple and kind act of providing sanitary towels which has the potential to enhance school performance.

‘In the spirit of being a responsible corporate citizen, Zambia Airports Corporation Limited remains deeply committed to making a substantial and tangible impact on the communities in which we operate. Today, we donate ten thousand kwacha worth of sanitary towels. This means 340 girls will benefit from the distribution of 2,000 sanitary towels enabling them to focus on their education.’ She said.

Ms Sikaulu said education is one of their main CSR objectives which is why they partnered with the Lusaka Global Shapers Community in honour of International Women’s Day.

‘Lusaka Global Shapers Community is one of those important organisations needed in our society to look after the many young girls who unfortunately are forced to miss school due to a very natural female experience. The great work being done by organisations such as the Lusaka Global Shapers Community and their partners remains increasing vital in giving young girls the chance to obtain a full education without being put at a disadvantage for something they cannot control.’

In receiving the Donation Ms. Sekayi Fundafunda, Curator of Lusaka Global Shapers Hub thanked Zambia Airports Corporation Limited for the donation adding that it will help the 340 girls take care of their monthly periods.

And Given Besa, Library Manager Lubuto Library Partners said they were grateful to the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited for the role they have played in helping the girls to succeed. She added that without access to feminine hygiene products, girls often cannot attend school and miss out on important opportunities.

‘So we would like to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, the Zambia Airports Corporation Limited, Lusaka Global Shapers, and Copper Rose for their contributions to the success of all the girls you see here today. You are truly making a difference for the girls and women of this community, who we in turn know will one day go on to make a difference in our city, our country, and our world.’ She said.

The ‘Menstruation Matters project is being implemented by the Lusaka Global Shapers, Copper Rose and Lis. The project is aimed at helping girls from poor social economic backgrounds with a pack of sanitary towels to reduce absenteeism from school which has the potential to enhance poor school performance. The project goes beyond distribution of sanitary pads by carrying out Menstrual and Sexual Reproductive Health Education in schools giving girls in rural communities the building blocks to build their lives and their dignity.

Minister of Health, Hon Dr Chitalu Chilufya
Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya says the National Health Insurance (NHI) should not be politicized because the scheme will benefit the Zambians.

Dr Chilufya says the introduction of the National Health Insurance will ensure that all Zambians have access to affordable health care.

He said it is important that Zambia achieves Universal Health Coverage at every stage, with particular emphasis on primary health services.

The Minister said this yesterday when he officiated at the Stakeholders Consultative Forum on the National Health Insurance Bill in Lusaka.

Dr Chilufya said it is essential to note that the Household Health Survey revealed that about 96 percent of the respondents were of the view that the introduction of a Social Health Insurance would be beneficial to the general population.

And Unions representing public and private workers are happy that the process of consultation on the National Health Insurance bill is ongoing and bearing fruit.

Speaking on behalf of the unions who held a consultative discussion with government and other stakeholders on Wednesday, Secondary School Teacher Union of Zambia -SESTUZ- Secretary General Wamuyawa Sitebikiso said he is happy that the concerns of the union have been taken on board by government.

Mr Sitebikiso said the National Health Insurance bill will provide decent and affordable health care for their members who have been yearning to have access to quality health care.

He has told ZNBC News that the unions position on the matter has Not changed and they still stand by the resolutions they made when they met in Livingstone early this year.

And Mr Sitebikiso has taken a swipe at some people and unions who are boycotting consultations over the national health insurance bill.

Government says it priorities the management of water resources in the country.

Ministry of Energy and Water Development Permanent Secretary Ed Chomba said government has placed water management top on its development agenda.

Bishop Chomba said the inclusion of water development in the Seventh National Development Plan (SNDP) is a clear demonstration of government’s commitment in managing the waters the country is endowed with.

Bishop Chomba said this at the NWASCO media breakfast held in Lusaka yesterday.

He said government will ensure that the available water is conserved and properly utilised for the benefit of the citizenry.

The PS said government will not allow a situation where water is miss applied or polluted.

Bishop Chomba noted that the ministry will endeavour to ensure that water is equitably distributed to people who need it.

He revealed that government together with its cooperating partners are working closely in a bid to improve water and sanitation in the country.

Bishop Chomba observed that the provision of clean, safe drinking water will avert water borne disease such as cholera.

And speaking earlier at the same function, Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition Chairperson, Professor Imasiku Nyambe announced that this year’s 7th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition will be held from the 11th to 13th of June 2018.

Prof Nyambe said the three days event will be used to raise awareness on the inseparable linkages between water, energy and food security.

He revealed that the programme will encompass keynote speeches, plenary sessions, parallel breakaway sessions and exhibitions.

Prof Nyambe said the forum will attract international delegates, institutions, companies in the water, energy, food sector and local stakeholders.

Africa’s population explosion is a time bomb – African Development Bank Governors

27

The African Development Bank and its East and North African Governors have stressed the need for urgent measures to match the continent’s growing population and youth unemployment, which they likened to a “ticking time bomb.”

The meeting described the continent’s growing young population as a potential growth engine for the world.

“The good news is that the solution is within our reach and will require investments,” said Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank.

At the end of a two-day consultation at the headquarters of the Bank in Abidjan, CÕte d’Ivoire, the Bank and the Governors discussed strategizes for closing Africa’s $170 billion infrastructure investment gap.

To bridge the investment gap, ensure inclusive growth, and create employment for the continent’s population, the meeting endorsed the African Development Bank-led African Investment Forum and described it as a timely opportunity to catalyze investments into projects and attract social impact financing to Africa.

Tanzania’s Minister for Finance and Planning, Isdor Mpango, called for closer involvement of the private sector in financing development on the continent.

“The African Development Bank is well positioned to advise and assist Governments and the private sector to come up with bankable projects,” Mpango said, calling for direct resources to provide budget support and investment opportunities.”

Through the African Investment Forum, scheduled for November 7-9, 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Bank and its partners intend to showcase bankable projects, attract financing, and provide platforms for investing across Africa. The forum will bring together the African Development Bank and other global multilateral financial institutions to de-risk investments at scale.

“A uniqueness of the African Investment Forum is that there will be no speeches. The only speeches will be transactions,” said President Adesina.

Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Claver Gatete said: “The African Development Bank has already discussed the concept of the African Investment Forum with us. The Rwandan Government takes this Forum very seriously.”

“Jobs will come from industrialization. The new approach using the African Investment Forum to de-risk the sector and attract investors is the way to go,” said Kiplagat Rotich, Kenyan Finance Minister.

13 per cent of the world’s population is estimated to live in sub-Saharan Africa today. That number is projected to more than double by 2050. Four billion (or 36 per cent of the world’s population) could live in the region by 2100, according to the UN Population Division. Africa is projected to have over 840 million youth by 2050 with the continent having the youngest population on earth.

According to Adesina, “We have 12 years left to the SDGs. It is an alarm bell because if Africa does not achieve the SDGs, the world won’t achieve them. The African Development Bank is accelerating development across Africa through the High 5s. We are deepening our reforms. We deepened our disbursements to the highest levels ever last year and we are leveraging more resources for Africa.”

Tunisia’s Finance Minister Zied Ladhari recalled how the Bank’s 11-year temporary relocation to his country helped strengthen the bonds between them. “We share the Bank’s vision. Africa is the continent of the future. This is a great Africa moment with the Bank at the centre. Unleashing the potential of African economies is a task which the Bank must accomplish.”

As part of the Bank’s High 5 agenda, 13 million African women have benefitted from new electricity connections and 23 million from improvements in agriculture. Also, 10 million African women have benefited from investee projects

An analysis of the African Development Bank’s impact from 2010-2017 indicates that 27 million Africans gained access to new electricity connections. 899,000 small businesses were provided with financial services. 35 million have benefitted from improved access to water and sanitation.

“With the Bank’s support, Somalia has evolved from a failed to a fragile state,” asserted Somalia’s Finance Minister, Abdirahman Beileh. “The African Development Bank has been with us throughout. Together we can reach the bright light at the end of the tunnel.”

Algeria’s Finance Minister, Abderahmane Raouia, said “The biggest challenge for Africa today is job creation. It is a stake of stability and a lever to pull economic growth upwards. We must offer job opportunities for young people to convince them to stay here on the continent.”

According to Simon Mizrahi, Director, Delivery, Performance Management and Results, the Bank needs to move from billions to trillions in its funding and leveraging effect.

Egypt’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Mohamed El-Hamzawi, who represented the Finance Minister, said the country has seen two revolutions in 2011 and 2014. He thanked the Bank for supporting the country’s macroeconomic stabilization, financial reforms, infrastructure, and energy projects, among others.

Morocco’s Economy and Finance Minister, Mohammed Boussaid, praised the Bank’s ambition for Africa, and underscored its support for energy, agriculture and infrastructure projects. He said “a capital increase today is not a choice, it is a necessity. Today, the leading export sector in Morocco no longer belongs to traditional sectors, such as phosphates, but to the automotive industry. This generates jobs and adds value for sustainable and robust growth.”

With a substantive capital increase, the African Development will be able to execute its robust pipeline of operations (15bn in 2018 alone), including infrastructure and regional integration projects. The prospects for 2018-2020 are bright, with 50.3 million people benefitting from improved access to transport compared to 14 million in 2017. Also, more than 35 million people are expected to benefit from new or improved electricity connections, in contrast to 4.4 million delivered in 2017.

Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini

Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has declared the Chilanga seat held by UPND’s Keith Mukata.

Dr Matibini has since written to the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia asking the Commission to start making arrangements for a by election.

The Speaker stated that a vacancy has occurred in the Chilanga seat following the sentencing to death of Mr Mukata by the Lusaka High Court last week Wednesday.

But Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Jack Mwiimbu has questioned the declaration of the Chilanga seat vacant when Mr Mukata has appealed against his death sentence.

Last week, Mr Mukata filed in a notice of appeal against his conviction. Lusaka High Court Judge Susan Wanjelani sentenced Mukata to death after finding him guilty of first degree murder.

According to Mr Mukata’s appear notice in filed in the Court of Appeal Holden at Lusaka Criminal Jurisdiction. “… On the following grounds, the learned trial judge erred in Law and fact when she convicted me without my supporting evidence on record to support such a conviction in. The learned trial judge erred in Law and fact when she convicted me based on circumstantial evidence which had more than one inference to drawn therefrom. Other grounds to be included upon perusal and review of the entire judgments,” the notice read in part.

Zesco and Zanaco join Nkana in black week for Zambian clubs

8

There was more misery for Zambian clubs in continental action on Wednesday when Zesco United and Zanaco both lost in their respective 2018 CAF Champions League engagements.

Zesco and Zanaco’s home losses came just 48 hours after Nkana were crushed 3-0 away in Algeria by CR Belouizdad in the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup.

At Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zesco United lost 1-0 to ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire.

An own goal from Solomon Sakala in the 37th minute handed Zesco its first home loss in continental club action.

The win for ASEC was also the first over Zesco by an Cote d’Ivoire club after two defeats in combined meetings that included losses by the Abidjan clubs’ archrivals Africa Sports in 2009.

There was more history in Lusaka at Nkoloma Stadium where Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland rallied to collect their debut away victory over a Zambian opponent.

‘Swallows stunned Zanaco 2-1 in their CAF Champions League match.

Maisha Chavda put Zanaco ahead in the 32nd minute but Felix Badenhorst and Richard McCreesh fought back with goals in the 55th and 86th minutes respectively.

But Zanaco missed a great opportunity to get an equalizer in stoppage time when Felix Nyaende missed a penalty.

Defeats or draws for Zesco and Zanaco in their final away ties during the weekend of March 17 will see them relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup while the winners with healthy margins advance to the CAF Champions’ League group stage.

Harassment of journalists by Zambia Police worries East PS

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo has described the attitude of Zambia Police officers at the last 2018 Nc’wala traditional ceremony of the Ngoni people at Mtenguleni village in Chipata as worrying.

Mr. Kasolo said Journalists had a right to apply their work freely in order to collect accurate data and information at the event without harassment.

The permanent secretary was reacting to the letter issued to him by ZANIS Provincial Information Officer Euphrasia Banda who complained against the manhandling of the media by some security officers at the 2018 Nc’wala ceremony in Chipata district.

This follows a Lusaka based ZANIS Cameraperson Fedelis Mulenga was manhandled and ejected out of the main Nc’wala arena by some security officers at the event.

Mr. Mulenga met his fate when he (Mulenga) attempted to reason with a police officer who wanted to remove a ZANIS technician manning the Public address System from thebmain arena and was slapped in the process.

The PS has described the action by police officers as worrying adding that, instead of them exhibiting professionalism and ensuring peace and tranquility in the execution of duties they went wild harassing the media.

Mr. Kasolo said the police are supposed to be in front line carrying out duties and ensuring that there is peace as opposed to being trouble makers during important events.

Mr. Kasolo said Journalists should work hand in hand with Police officers and vise vesa in supplying information to the public, hence the collaboration between the two remains vital.

And Eastern Province Police Chief Luckson Sakala has condemned and described the attitude of the police officers as unfortunate.

Mr. Sakala said the objective of the media and of the police at the end of point was one and the same hence the need for them to work in harmony.

He has since assured the media in the province that he will not tolerate a re-occurrence of what happened at the ceremony among his officers.

Journalists who covered Nc’wala ceremony have expressed concern with the manner in which police harassed the journalist.

This comes hardly in a space of two months when a Daily Mail Journalist was again harassed by the men and women in uniform during the cleaning up exercise which is a source of concern to the media fraternity in the province.

Power cuts being experienced in Lusaka are not as a result of load shedding-ZESCO

24
ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata checking the building in New Kasama that has encroached in the ZESCO pole line

ZESCO Public Relations Officer Henry Kapata says the power cuts being experienced in some parts of Lusaka are not as a result of loadsheding.

Mr. Kapata said some parts of Lusaka like Chilenje, Chalala, and Kamwala have been experiencing some power cuts due to the faults caused by the current season.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Kapata said the mentioned areas are not experiencing load sheding but only electrical faults due to the current weather.

He however said that ZESCO is having challenges in fixing the faults because the fixing of electricity faults is not done during the rainy season.

Mr. Kapata noted ZESCO sends messages on mobile phones to residents if the faults are caused by the company to inform them about the inconvenience.

He however mentioned that there is enough water that will ensure the constant supply of electricity to the nation.

Recently there has been concerns from some residents of Lusaka assuming that the power cuts were load shedding.

First Lady Esther Lungu says it is gratifying that women are making positive gains towards achieving gender parity across the globe and Zambia in particular.

Mrs. Lungu said the gains women have achieved towards gender parity has been made possible by the very strong civil society movement of advocacy, activism and support in the country.

The first lady urged women not to be complacent but continue pressing forward and remain united.

The First Lady was speaking at the Women’s Day Reception event last evening organised by the Chinese Ladies Union in Zambia at the Lusaka Museum.

She hailed the efforts of government for the strides it has made to ensure gender equality in the country and further commended the legislature for putting in place policies and laws that protect women and girls from any forms of violence.

The Chinese Ladies Union in Zambia (CLUZ) also applauded Zambia for achieving gender equity and for implementing various women empowerment programs in the country.

Union Patron and Wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Geng Hailing said Zambia has made strides to ensure gender equity and has managed to improve representation in decision making positions in the country.

She said China like Zambia has also ensured that women representation in government increases so that they participate in the decision making process.

She further hailed the relationship between the two countries noting that the ties have continued to deepen resulting in the people of the two countries to work together in various sectors.

She said China will endeavor to expand the cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of the citizens.

The Women’s Day reception which was held ahead of the international women’s day which falls on the 8th of March was characterised by Chinese music performances by pupils and Chinese instrumentalists.

Kitwe Council Refutes CDF mismanagement claims by Chimwemwe MP

5

The Kitwe City Council has refuted allegations by Chimwemwe Member of Parliament Mwila Mutale that over K500, 000 Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for the year 2013 has gone unaccounted for.

Mr. Mwila alleged that the money that was meant for drilling five boreholes and putting up street lights in three roads in Chimwemwe constituency has been spent but none of the works was done.

Speaking in an interview in ZANIS in Kitwe today, Kitwe City Council Manager for the above CDF projects Kelvin Navinda explained that the localauthority paid for all the three road lighting projects and two were done.

Mr. Navinda said the contractor for the third road lighting project did not do the works forcing the local authority to terminate the contract after consulting its the legal department.

He named the two roads where street lights were put as Chishimba and Garnetone –Zambia Compound roads while Twatasha road was abandoned by the contractor who later was ordered to provide poles equivalent to the amount of money he was given to carry out the project.

He clarified that the local authority paid K107, 000 for Twatasha road, K59, 000 for Chishimba road and another K59, 000 for Garnetone-Zambia compound road.

The contractors engaged were G.A Automation, Josmark Enterprise and Majety contractors, all of Kitwe district.

And on the boreholes, Mr. Navinda said the three boreholes were drilled but in the process, two got vandalised while one was producing muddy water which the residents could not use.

He explained that the contractor was then told to flush out the muddy water but did not do so despite having being paid all the money until the legal department took the case to court.

Mr. Navinda further stated that on the three solar boreholes, Billium contractor was engage to do the work which he did not fully execute.

He added that the defaulting contractors will soon be taken to court for failing to carry out the works after receiving the money for the respective projects.

Mr. Navinda said it was wrong for Mr. Mutale to say the money went unaccounted for when the works were actually carried out despite some not having been completed as specified.

He said it was also important to note that the council was not sitting idle over the uncompleted projects but was pursuing the defaulting contractors.

Constituency Development Funds is money allocated to constituencies for development projects that are suggested by residents.

SACCORD backs 30 day petition recommendation

SACCORD executive director Boniface Cheembe
SACCORD executive director Boniface Cheembe

The Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes-SACCORD says the increase in the number of days to deal with presidential petitions will give ample time for the aggrieved parties to address their issues.

Speaking in an interview SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe said the 14 days which was put in the amended constitution of 2016 was problematic and that it contributed to the political tension which the country has seen since the 2016 general elections.

Cheembe said his organisation welcomes the move to increase the number of days from 14 to 30 days because the increase in days will give adequate time to the aggrieved to attend to their grievances

“As SACCORD we welcome the increase of days in presidential petition from what was included in the amended constitution number 2 of 2016 of 14 days to what the technical committee put in place by the Ministry of Justice has recommended that of 30 days.

“We believe that the increase in the number of days will go a long way in helping and to give some time to aggrieved parties to be able to attend to their grievances as the 14 days was too problematic and contributed to the political tension that the country has been experiencing since the 2016 general election on account of the fact the 14 days were not adequate.

“As SACCORD we would even have preferred to have 90 days for presidential petition so that all stakeholders are given ample time for them to have all their grievances heard so that by the time we are having a President being sworn into office he or she would at least be coming into office without any other pending issues as regards the petition,” he said.

The technical committee appointed by the Ministry of Justice to address some of the lacunas in the amended constitution commended that a presidential petition be given 30 days in which to resolve the petition.

This recommendation comes in the wake of a difficult petition by the UPND in the 2016 elections. It was believed by stakeholders that the 14 days was inadequate a period for a substantive presentation of evidence.

In a highly competitive and polarised political environment it is only hoped that the 30 days period under recommendation would suffice to allow both the petitioners and the petitioned to beyond reasonable doubt walk away content that justice has prevailed.

Zambians alike crave an election that ends with one conceding defeat and the other walking to victory without humilaiting the loser in national building.

Women welcome SI on hand washing

7

Women in Chinsali District of Muchinga Province have welcomed the amendment of the Statutory Instrument number 10 of 2018 by the Ministry of Local Government of enforcing the hand washing and hygiene.

This is in line with the 2018 women week activities which were flagged off by Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Jobbicks Kalumba on Friday during the day of payers which were held at St John’s Catholic Church under the theme “all God’s creation is very good”.

Dr Kalumba encouraged women to be united as they have the potential to serve the country from cholera outbreak by ensuring they support government’s calls.

The PS also appealed to all Zambians to love one another as the theme for the day of prayer states it clearly.

Yesterday, a team of women led by Chinsali District Commissioner Maximo Chitambi donated assorted disinfectants, and later cleaned Chinsali General Hospital.

The women also sensitized to other women in the area on the importance of hygiene and hand washing with its revised penalties under SI 10 of 2018.

Later, women donated pampers to newly born babies and other children in the hospital.

This year’s International Women’s Day will be commemorated under the theme “Time is now: Rural and Urban Activists, Transforming Women’s Lives”.
