Traditional leaders meet HH after attending funeral of Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi

7

President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his honor at hosting traditional leaders from Eastern Province who had traveled to South Africa to represent Zambia during the funeral service of Prince Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi. Prince Buthelezi was a prominent South African politician and Zulu prince who served as the traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal family from 1954 until his passing in 2023.

President Hichilema highlighted the historical connection between Zambian traditional leaders and the Zulu Kingdom, which led to the decision to send Paramount Chief Mpezeni, Senior Chief Nsefu, Chief Jumbe, Chief Madzimawi, Chief Maguya, and Ambassador George Zulu to attend the funeral service.

During their courtesy call, discussions centered on the importance of collaboration in improving the livelihoods of Zambian citizens and fostering national unity. President Hichilema reaffirmed his commitment to consulting with traditional leaders, acknowledging their vital role in bridging the gap between the government and local communities.

Traditional Leaders Encourage Reconciliation Between President Hichilema and Former President Lungu

20

Prominent chiefs from Eastern Province have called for reconciliation and unity between President Hakainde Hichilema and former President Edgar Lungu. The traditional leaders have expressed their concern over the current tension between the two leaders and its potential negative consequences for the country’s development and unity.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni,of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province, emphasized the importance of finding common ground for President Hichilema and former President Lungu to work together in the interest of national development. He stressed that their ongoing discord could lead to division and hinder the progress of the nation.

During a courtesy call on President Hichilema at Community House, Paramount Chief Mpezeni also encouraged the current head of state to remain focused on serving the citizens despite negative voices and distractions. He assured President Hichilema that he is on the right path to fulfilling his promises and improving the lives of the Zambian people.

Senior Chief Nsefu, urged the government to collaborate closely with traditional leaders, as they are representatives of the people and play a crucial role in maintaining harmony and unity within communities.

In response, President Hichilema emphasized the significance of dialogue in addressing various issues that may arise. He reiterated his government’s commitment to improving the lives of the people by effectively managing the country’s resources and fostering cooperation among all stakeholders.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni’s counsel for reconciliation and unity aligns with the broader call for peace and cooperation in Zambia. The traditional leaders also called for upholding the legacy of the late founding father, Kenneth Kaunda, emphasizing the principle of “one Zambia, one Nation.”

In addition to encouraging reconciliation, Paramount Chief Mpezeni raised concerns about the escalating price of mealie meal and urged the government to address this issue to alleviate the stress it has caused among citizens.

Saileti Salutes Mutondo Stars Second League Win

0

Coach Zeddy Saileti has saluted the character of his promoted side Mutondo Stars after they picked their second win in the first four matches of the FAZ Super Division season.

Mutondo on Sunday edged Forest 3-2 in Ndola to move into fifth place on the table, just one point away from the top.

In a post-match interview at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Saileti described Mutondo’s performance in the top league as fantastic.

“Winning the second game as league debutants I think is motivating to my team, my boys. In the briefing I told them we have won, we have lost, we have drawn so today the most important results is what? They said it is a win,” Saileti said.

“I think we played collectively because we knew Forest were experienced but we were more organised.Forest were coming from behind. I thought we controlled the game,” he said.

Mutondo sits on seven points in four matches after posting two wins, a draw and loss.

He is preaching more hard work among his players.

“The character is fantastic because the boys are doing what we are planning. The expectations are always high in the Super League but the players accounted for themselves well. We are doing well, I can’t complain,” Saileti said.

Summer madness is over: 1xBet presents top ten player transfers from Black continent

0

The 1xBet betting company talks about African stars who changed their clubs this off-season.

The transfer period has traditionally presented many bright cases, and its highlight was the Saudi Arabia clubs, which got the Football Manager in real life. Talented African players were in high demand and many changed their club registration. Here are the ten most promising transfers.

Mohammed Kudus (Ghana)

From Ajax to West Ham.

Kudus had a great season in Ajax (18 goals and 7 assists in 42 games) and caught the English clubs’ attention. In the winter, the press wrote about the interest of Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag was gathering Ajax-2. However, West Ham and Chelsea were at the finish line. The Hammers won the fight and paid €43 million for the talented attacking midfielder.

Edouard Mendy (Senegal)

From Chelsea to Al-Ahli.

Clubs from Saudi Arabia have blown up the transfer market by enticing star players from European leagues. One of them was Edouard Mendy, who lost his place in the Chelsea starting lineup. Al-Ahli paid 18.5 million euros for the 31-year-old goalkeeper and now can be calm for the net – Mendy will fight to be the league’s best player in his position and can help the team win more than one title.

Andre Onana (Cameroon)

From Inter to Manchester United.

With Inter, Andre Onana reached the Champions League final and became one of the season’s best players. Manchester United was just looking for a new main goalkeeper and Ten Hag’s shared past with the Cameroonian goalkeeper in Ajax was crucial. Footwork and charisma are exactly what David de Gea lacked. Manchester United spent 52.5 million euros on Andre to close out a critical position for years. At least, that’s what Red Devils fans hope for.

Nicolas Jackson (Senegal)

From Villarreal to Chelsea.

This promising center forward should return the Pensioners to the struggle for the top places – at least, that’s what the club’s manager thinks. The Londoners paid the 22-year-old striker’s 37 million euros clause. Mauricio Pochettino praises the Senegalese: “Nicolas has the potential to become one of the best strikers. Finding such a player is not easy. Jackson’s work ethic is amazing.” However, this guy doesn’t have much time – if Chelsea doesn’t start winning regularly with him, he could be in our winter transfer overview.

Alex Iwobi (Nigeria)

From Everton to Fulham.

The England transfer window’s last day is always very eventful. This time, the deadline has changed the fate of Alex Iwobi, one of the leading players in the Nigerian national team. The attacking midfielder moved to Fulham from Everton for 25.7 million euros. For Alex, this is a career take-off – the Cottagers solve much more serious tasks than Sean Dyche’s team, which needs to keep its place in the top division. The Nigerian speed and football intelligence will come in handy for Marco Silva, who instilled in Fulham a very interesting football style.

Ibrahim Sangaré (Ivory Coast)

From PSV to Nottingham Forest.

For some time this player was on Barcelona, Manchester United, and Chelsea’s radar, but moved to a lesser-known club – Nottingham Forest. The Foresters are running another transfer window in the style of a supermarket visitor looking for bargains in the hour before Christmas – they signed 14 newcomers over the summer, 6 of them in the final days. The Ivorian was one of them, although they paid quite a substantial amount for him – 35 million euros. For the 25-year-old Sangaré it was a great opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League.

Sadio Mane (Senegal)

From Bayern to Al Nassr.

After his finest hour in Liverpool, Sadio Mane’s career at Bayern didn’t go very well. Changes in the coaching position and conflicts in the dressing room did have a positive effect both on the team and the player. According to the press, Mane could have returned to the Premier League in the summer transfer window, but Al Nassr from Saudi Arabia became his new home. Bayern received 30 million euros for the 31-year-old footballer, and Mane is already enjoying the company of the team’s main star, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal)

From Chelsea to Al-Hilal.

After transferring from Napoli, the defender managed to spend only a season in Chelsea and changed the club again, moving for 23 million euros to Saudi Arabia. Koulibaly secured his future and did not hide it: “I will not argue that I came to Saudi Arabia because of the money. I will help my whole family live well and also support my foundation activities in Senegal. I am also a Muslim and moved to the ideal country for me and my family.”

Franck Kessié (Ivory Coast)

From Barcelona to Al-Ahli.

Franck Kessié could not become the new Yaya Touré and win an important place in Xavi’s formations in Barcelona, therefore went to the place where he would be appreciated much more. Al-Ahli paid 12.5 million euros for the Ivorian. The money was not spent in vain – in five matches for the new team, the midfielder has already scored two goals.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon)

From Chelsea to Marseille.

“Thomas Tuchel played a big role in my move to Chelsea and was sacked a week later.” Aubameyang did not count on such events’ development so he could not become the Londoners’ leader under the Potter and Lampard management. As a result, the Gabonese footballer went to Ligue 1 and will delight Marseille fans at the crowded Velodrome. Aubameyang came to the new club as a free agent, and three effective actions in six matches show this decision was right.

African stars are already taking to the pitch in the new teams’ jerseys. Follow their performances, bet on your favorite athletes, and win with 1xBet!

The Roman Catholic Church in Kasempa has implored government to consider repealing the law which bars ex-inmates to be employed in the public sector.

Government Expresses Concern Over “Grand Scheme” Documentary

36

The government, through the Ministry of Information and Media, has raised concerns over the recently released documentary titled “The Grand Scheme.” The documentary, produced by a foreign news agency and a foreign government, has stirred controversy for its content, which includes allegations of political conspiracies and regime change in Zambia and neighboring countries.

In a press statement, Hon. Chushi Kasanda, MP, the Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, criticized the participation of Zambian individuals, including Fred M’membe, Emmanuel Mwamba, Chilufya Tayali, and Raphael Nakachinda, in the documentary.

She stated that these individuals, whom she referred to as “charlatans,” should not be allowed to jeopardize Zambia’s friendly relations with Zimbabwe.

Minister Kasanda expressed her dismay at how these individuals allegedly discredited their own country and leader for international acclaim, causing reputational damage to Zambia.

She labeled them as failed politicians attempting to solicit foreign support to destabilize Zambia’s constitutionally elected government.

She further noted that these individuals appeared to be motivated by their aversion to President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND government.

Additionally, the Minister highlighted that the government was concerned about the documentary’s smear campaign against Dr. Nevers Mumba, who was involved in SADC-related activities.

She urged Zambian citizens to discern the intentions of these opposition leaders, questioning their patriotism and morality levels.

In response to the allegations, Dr. Nevers Mumba, a prominent figure in the documentary, issued a strongly worded statement condemning the content and its producers.

Dr. Mumba accused the five Zambians—Fred M’membe, Given Lubinda, Raphael Nakachinda, Emmanuel Mwamba, and Chilufya Tayali—of collaborating with Zimbabwe’s ZANU-PF and the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation to produce a “reckless” and “anti-Zambian” documentary.

Dr. Mumba argued that the documentary went beyond politics, characterizing it as national sabotage and espionage. He contended that the documentary contained false claims, defamation, and insults against him and President Hakainde Hichilema.

He emphasized the gravity of suggesting that a sitting President is working to overthrow neighboring governments on behalf of Western interests, considering it a threat to national security.

Dr. Mumba called for a thorough investigation into the matter, suggesting that the justice system should take an interest in addressing this alleged breach of national security.

Government Dismisses Claims of Travel Restriction on Former President Lungu

22

Thabo Kawana, the Director Spokesperson at the Ministry of Information and Media, has refuted allegations that former President Edgar Lungu was prevented from traveling to South Korea by President Hakainde Hichilema. Mr. Kawana has clarified that such claims are rooted in misinformation and are not grounded in reality.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka, Mr. Kawana emphasized that President Hichilema does not handle the affairs of the office of the former President. He reiterated that the Office of the 6th Republican President operates under constitutional provisions and is managed by the Cabinet Office. Therefore, matters related to the former President’s travel plans need to be addressed through the appropriate channels.

Mr. Kawana disclosed that the Office of the 6th President and the Cabinet Office are currently in discussions to resolve any existing issues. He further explained that, for security reasons, it is essential that the Cabinet Office is informed when the former President intends to travel abroad.

The Director of Spokesperson underlined the significance of notifying the Cabinet Office in advance, even in cases where the trip is sponsored by external parties. He emphasized that Edgar Lungu, as a repository of state secrets, holds information that is crucial for national security, and therefore, the government must be informed of his travel plans.

Mr. Kawana clarified that the government’s role is to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens, including former heads of state. If the state is unable to provide the necessary security measures for a particular trip, it may advise against the travel to protect the individual’s safety.

National Disability Indaba commences in Lusaka

0

Government says it is committed to ensuring that basic health care services reaches everyone including persons living with disabilities.

Minister of Health, Sylvia Masebo said persons living with disabilities are faced with a number of challenges such as limitations in accessing equitable and quality health care services.

Ms Masebo observed that the situation is worse for women and girls with disabilities who are more likely to be exposed to sexual abuse and forms of physical and mental violence.

The minister said this today in a speech read on her behalf by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Donor Coordination, George Sinyangwe during the two days National Disability Indaba in Lusaka today.

She said government continues to prioritize disability inclusion in service provision towards achieving universal health coverage hence the hosting of the Indaba.

Ms Masebo noted that protracted isolation and disruption in routine outreach services due to COVID-19 have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities among persons with disabilities.

“Government recognizes the fact that good health is a means for development. Therefore access to basic health services including the persons with disability should be a human right. This approach is also enriched in the UPND manifesto whose guiding principle is a people centered, pro poor development strategy that guarantees basic needs for Zambians,” Ms Masebo said.

She has urged the participants to take advantage of the Indaba and ensure that they come up with solutions on how best the government and stakeholders can effectively address their concerns and challenges.

Speaking at the same event, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative Seth Broekman says the institution will continue supporting the Ministry of Health in the successful implementation of the strategies towards reducing illness among persons with disabilities.

Mr Broekman who was represented by UNFPA Sexual Reproductive Health Specialist, Wezy Kaonga said it is imperative for people living with disabilities to also have access to sexual reproductive health and Gender Based Violence (GBV) services in order to increase community participation in health.

“As UNFPA, we will continue supporting the Zambian government through the Ministry of Health in ensuring that the vision 2030 is achieved and no one will be left behind including addressing health inequalities and vulnerabilities among adolescent girls, young people and persons with disabilities,” he said

The two days Indaba is being held under the theme: ‘Ensuring health for all towards Universal Health Coverage.”

Why Stop Edgar Lungu from travelling- Msoni asks Governement

35

Opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party President Nason Msoni has urged the UPND government to explain the law related to the sustained restrictions being imposed on the former President Edgar Lungu.

Mr. Msoni has charged that it is absurd, shameful and a self indictment on government, the treatment the Former Head of State is being subjected to.

He has since urged the government to apply decorum to its management style.

“We urge the UPND government to inculcate dignity and decorum in their management style of running government. It is totally uncivilised to yank-out a dignified citizen from the aircraft who is not subject to any known criminal proceedings but based on fear and insecurity of the regime,” he said.
Mr Msoni has said that no on believes that the form of ill treatment and sustained harassment that the Sixth Republican President is receiving is acceptable.

“Arguably the comparison of the travel ban and the restraining order that was imposed on the (late)fourth former President Rupiah Banda and the sixth former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is totally different and cannot be justified on that basis.

“President Lungu is currently not subject to criminal proceedings warranting any senseless restrictions or travel ban.

To the best of our knowledge President Lungu is not appearing before any competent court in Zambia to warrant this uncouth behaviour from government.

We think that it is prudent for the UPND government to explain the law related to the sustained restrictions being imposed on the former President,” he said.
“We must never shy away or condone injustice on anyone irrespective who the victims are,” he added.

The Opposition has condemned in the strongest terms government’s behaviour and urged president Hichilema to desist from using the government to pursue personal vendettas against the former President.

Saved By The Goat!

2

Where has this culture of dispatching suspected offenders on the express highway to Hell by dousing them in petrol and setting them ablaze suddenly come from? I initially thought such grisly and macabre activities, absolutely perfect for a horror movie, were at least only imaginable in remote areas or shanty compounds where a number of our people may still be stuck in the quagmire of the ‘Stone Age’ way of looking at or resolving issues due to lack of knowledge. Little did I realise I was completely off tangent…..well, until a few days ago!

As the clock struck close to midnight, I was tossing and turning around in bed trying to summon some sleep when a piercing sound shrilled through the darkness and systematically drilled into my ears! My head immediately exploded in excruciating pain as I felt my sphincter muscles almost giving up…….Of course, it would be a misnomer for readers to conclude this writer is a weakling given to easily yielding to simple ailments which would compel him scuttling to the loo any how! I must confess I had been confined to the safe parameters of my bedroom for the past two days due to a combination of a splitting headache and running stomach.

Anyway, not to bore you with tales of our sudden indisposition these last few days, I groped for my cheap Chinese handset as I dashed to the bathroom. Quite obviously, my wife wouldn’t take kindly to my succumbing to the indiscretion of emptying the contents of my bowels on our matrimonial bed; well if at all there was still anything remaining inside of me given my recent frequent visitations to the bathroom.

“Folks from the neighbourhood have captured a suspected thief from our garage….” the voice on the other end of the line intoned, frantically. “They’re now threatening to set him ablaze……”

“Have you informed the police?” panick begun to set in, furiously.

“We’ve already done that!” the voice of our guard faltered. “They’ve now forced him on the ground and put tyres on him; and someone has already gone to fetch petrol and matches…..”

Say what!

I frantically searched for whatever contact I could call for help in my phonebook. Fortunately, one of my friends was within the vicinity. He responded to my ‘SOS’ with the fire brigade approach. He arrived at the scene just as someone was about to strike the match stick.

“Why are you delaying to start the fire?” Someone argued. “We’ve to teach this goon a lesson, the Mumbwa way!”

A while ago, Mumbwa residents; hitherto a backwater rural enclave West of the country known for farming, ran amok burning and looting property when rumour mills came alight with captivating anecdotes that a local business tycoon and his foreign counterpart were behind the gruesome killings which had resulted in private parts being dismembered from the corpses – sets if you like! Matters came to a head when the mob finally got hold of the suspected culprits. They wasted no time emptying containers of fuel on them and torching them. Ouch!

We were just minutes away from recording yet another mindless loss of life at the hands of an irate mob.

Apparently, someone from the neighbourhood had requested to secure their goat in our garage for the night to prevent it from being mauled by their vicious dogs. They planned to slaughter it for some festivities the following day. At a certain interval, they sent their nephew – a visitor from the village, to check on the goat. Their invited guests would be absolutely disappointed if the promised mouth-watering goat meat wasn’t part of the menu. True to their worst fears, the young man couldn’t find the goat where he had secured it on a leash; he was obviously unsettled. He started turning things around like crazy as he searched for the goat.

Drawn to the commotion in the garage at that awkward hour when everyone should be home, some alert neighbours decided to raise alarm.

“Kabolala! Kabolala! Kabolala!” They screamed in unison.

Some youths immediately mobilised themselves and stormed the garage armed with all manner of weapons – catapults, pangas, slashers and axes! The menacing mob cornered the lad before he could take flight. None of them could ould buy the story that he found himself there to find a goat! They were determined to unleash mob justice on him to send a signal to would-be offenders that indeed the area was a “No Go Zone” after after a spate of thefts that rocked the area not so long ago.

“Have you seen any goats in here?” they taunted him. “You think we’re dimwits; since when did a garage become a kraal?”

They violently dragged him outside as heavy blows continued raining on him in rapid successions.

They had just tackled him to the ground on the middle of the road and begun piling tyres and any scrap material they could salvage, on him, when my colleague suddenly pitched up.

“Wait a minute!” he pleaded.

As if on cue, the goat equally bleated and dramatically trotted from underneath one of the benches where it had taken refuge.

West UCZ preps for 100 years celebration

1

The United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Western Presbytery has launched its one hundred (100) year’s celebration of the Butoya Conference slated for October 18th to 22nd, 2023 in Sefula area in Mongu district.

The launch started with the flagging-off of marchers by Western Province Minister, Kapelwa Mbangweta at Barotse Shopping Mall in Mongu who later graced the event at Mukoko UCZ Congregation.
Mr Mbangweta commended the church for having been a faithful partner in the development of Western Province and also expressed hope for the gesture to continue.

He urged the UCZ to become proactive and also start participating in the developmental projects of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in order to improve some various health and education infrastructure as well as other activities.

“Speaking on behalf of the government we would like the UCZ also to be participating in developmental projects in CDF so that it can improve some of the various infrastructure in the health and education sectors as well as other activities,” Mr Mbangweta said.

He assured the church of full government support for holding the Butoya conference.
And in his homily, Western Presbytery Bishop Roy Kanchele praised the missionaries for the great job they did to the church in the past and challenged the congregants over what they could do to the church today.

“I am challenging each and every one of us if the church is to be in safe hands to be careful with decisions we make for its existence tomorrow, let us be attentive to the decisions we make for the sake of our children,” Bishop Kanchele said.

He further challenged everyone to rise on, keep moving and serve the lord.

Meanwhile, Reverend George Kachiza explained that the Butoya Conference started with bringing youths across the presbyterian around September and October for a week’s bible studies and recreation activities such as tug of war, beach volleyball and wrestling among others.

Rev. Kachiza said that the birth of Butoya Conference was at a missionary conference held in Sefula in 1923 where a decision was made that all church members be meeting annually at the area and hence now to celebrate its 100 years of being in existence.

He said that the conference later changed to become a bi-annually engagement and now every after four years adding that prior to the conference, the presbytery council meets to elect the bishop at a colourful Sunday church service to lead the church for the next four years.
