Ikelenge MMD MP Elijah Muchima has accused the PF government of trying to hoodwink people in his constituency into voting for them even after failing to deliver on their promises in the last five years.

Speaking in an interview Honourable Muchima said PF have failed to deliver development in his constituency but that have now taken heaped road construction equipment because they have realised that this is an election year and think that they can hoodwink the people in his constituency.

He said he has time and again called for the construction of the main road which connects the area to Mwinulunga as it becomes impassable during rainy season but the PF government has ignored his pleas.

He said compared to the previous government of MMD, the PF government has done literally nothing apart from putting up foundations in his constituency.

“Compared to what MMD under Mwanawasa did in my constituency before his second term, PF has done literally nothing apart from putting up foundations. Our priority in my Constituency is the road but what do they do? They wait until during election that’s when they go and heap equipment, during rainy season and it rains heavily even if they go to launch they want to hoodwink the people,” he said.

He added that people are not foolish and understand that the launch is meant to hoodwink them into voting for them.

“People are not foolish and understand, all this five years were have they been? We have simple things like bridges are being washed away, cassava fields are being washed away by the rains and school roofs are being blown away day in and day out and the government is unable to attend to those challenges,” he said.

Mr Muchima further bemoaned the lack of materials and teachers in schools in the constituency saying there is a serious shortage of teachers due to erratic distribution of teachers in his area.

He said even the introduction of computers in schools is ill timed as almost all the schools have no power of any kind hence making it impossible for anybody to teach computer classes.

Lusaka businessman Sean Tembo has written to Bank of Zambia Governor Denny Kalyalya demanding that the Central Bank releases financial statements for the year 2013, 2014 and 2015.

In the letter dated February 15 2016 obtained in Lusaka, Mr Tembo is demanding that the statements be released for verification purposes of the country’s foreign currency reserves.

Mr Tembo said he was prompted to write to Dr Kalyalya following an article in the Zambia Daily Mail of 12th February 2016 in which the Governor was quoted as saying that foreign reserves were intact at $2.9 million.

He said he has strong doubts about the factual correctness of the said assertion with regard to the country’s foreign reserves.

“In order for me and my business plan and more accurately project the country’s economic outlook and business operating environment, I need comfort with regard to factual correctness of the figure for our country’s foreign reserves. In this regard, I am requesting for your bank’s full set of financial years ending 2013, 2014 and 2015. These documents will assist me to examine movements in our foreign reserves in the recent past as well as what the current position really is,” the letter read.

Mr Tembo noted that his doubts about the actual correctness of the assertions by the Governor should not be misconstrued as an attempt to cast aspersions on Dr Kalyalya’s professional integrity which he said he still holds in high esteem.

Quicksilver pays tribute to ‘Big Fye’ Simukonda

Beston ‘Quicksilver’ Chambeshi has paid tribute to the late Nchanga Rangers coach Fighton ‘Big Fye’ Simukonda.

The duo were team mates at both Zambia and Nkana in the 80’s.

“It’s a big loss to soccer fraternity and to the country,” Chambeshi said.

“I played with him at club and national team what a wonderful man he was to work with and he was smart in doing his job. May his soul rest in peace.”

Simukonda, 58 died on February 15 at Konkola Mine Hospital in Chililabombwe following a two month battle with Diabetes.

Lwandamina: Al Ghazala gave us a rough time

1

Coach George Lwandamina admitted that Zesco United were frustrated by visiting South Sudan club Al Ghazala Wau’s defensive tactics in the first leg match of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

Zesco on Sunday kicked off their CAF Champions League campaign with 2-0 win over Al Ghazala at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

The visitors defended through out the match in their own half.

“They employed defensive tactics so how do you expect players to play. Even if there was enough creativity, there was little space in which to use the creativity itself,” Lwandamina said.

“It was a very, very tough game; they came and they packed the bus. The only goals we could have scored are may be from afar. If the boys had taken the initiative to shoot from afar, it was going to be a
different game altogether,” he said.

Meanwhile Al Ghazala assistant coach John Baptist Abakar said his team had hoped for a draw.

“We changed our tactics as early as the fifteenth minute because if we played an open match it was going to be a big loss. Zesco is a big team and the game we have played with them has given us an idea about them. The second leg is going to be different,” said Abakar.

The second leg tie will take place at Juba Stadium on February 26.

Even though it’s the beginning of the week, I really want to treat myself. Sometimes you just crave certain food, for no apparent reason at all; and that’s exactly how I feel today. So I’ve decided to start off my week with a nice sweet treat, because everyone needs a bit of sugar in their lives. My sugar fix for today is this rich, moist and delicious Date Nut Bread. It is essentially a cake loaf, similar to banana loaf/bread; and it’s perfect for any time of the day, that’s why I love it so much. You can toast it for breakfast, or have it with a lovely cup of tea in the evening.

Preparation & Cooking time: 1 hr 40 mins

Serves: 24

Ingredients

  •  265g dates, pitted and chopped
  •  530mls of boiling water
  •  3 tsps baking soda
  •  125g chopped walnuts
  •  402g white sugar
  •  3 tbsps margarine
  •  2 eggs, beaten
  •  1 tsp salt
  •  576g cups all-purpose flour
  •  1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

Combine baking soda with the boiling water. Soak the dates in the water and baking soda solution for 30 minutes. Prepare your 9 x 5 inch baking tin, by greasing it with butter or margarine, and then sprinkle some flour over it.

Beat sugar and butter together. Add eggs, vanilla, dates, nuts, flour, and salt

Divide batter equally between the two loaf tins. Bake for 1 hour at . You can use a knife or a cocktail stick and pierce the cake in the centre – if they come out clean then the loaf is done, if not cook for a further few minutes.

Serving

Serve with a beverage of your choice, it particularly goes down well with a fresh cup of tea. You can also slightly toast it in the mornings for breakfast and have it with a side of fruit, cream or vanilla yogurt.

Don’t just Blame President Lungu on the Economy, UPND MP Jonas Shakafuswa tells Opposition

Katuba MP Jonas Shakafuswa
Katuba MP Jonas Shakafuswa

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) Katuba Member of Parliament Jonas Shakafuswa has challenged opposition politicians to explain the current global economic crisis to party members unlike blaming President Edgar Lungu over the economic shortcomings.

Mr Shakafuswa, an economist, charged that it was naive for some opposition politicians to solely heap the blame of some challenges facing the economy on Mr Lungu.
“It’s been a trying moment for him (Mr Lungu) because he took over when the economy was already faced with problems from external forces.

“Right now, there is a global economic phenomenon which can’t be attributed to being caused by Mr Lungu,” he said.

He said that despite the challenging economic outlook Zambia was experiencing now, the President was making positive efforts to revive the economy.

In an interview yesterday, he said some challenges the economy was faced with were largely triggered by external shortcomings which could not be attributed as having been brought by Mr Lungu.

He said politicians should not forget that Zambia has for many years, been exposed to global economic shocks and manipulations including at the period President Lungu took over.

The former Finance deputy minister in the MMD regime said the country’s problems have built up over the year’s right through to Mr Lungu, who has only been in office for a short period.

He said since Zambia’s economy largely depended on the mining industry, the shrinking copper prices on international market have also affected the country.

This follows a significant reduction of copper prices, which was Zambia’s major foreign earner as well as low demand of the commodity by China, the country’s major market.

“As politicians, we know these global economic issues, let’s stop finger-pointing. We need to come together, give solutions and also help to explain these global natural causes to our party members to understand how our economy is being affected,” he said.

Mr Shakafuswa appealed to Zambians to remain firm and explore valuable solutions to foster more economic development as the country goes to the polls.

The Bank of Zambia (BoZ) last week also projected positive economic growth in 2016 despite the challenging economic outlook the country was experiencing currently

MMD Should align itself with PF-Mbita Chitala

25

Mbita Chitala
Dr Mbita Chitala

FOUNDING member of the MMD, Mbita Chitala has said the former ruling party should align itself with the Patriotic Front (PF) ahead of the August 11, general election.

Dr Chitala said in an interview yesterday that the proposed alliance between the MMD and PF should be realised for the mutual benefit of both political parties.

“My position on this matter is that the MMD and its leader Nevers Mumba should heed the advice of Paramount Chief Chitumukulu that the alliance with the PF is the right way to go.

“I see nothing wrong with the two parties merging ahead of the elections, but, the challenge is for the MMD leadership to appreciate the wisdom of the elders,” Dr Chitala who once served as MMD deputy national secretary said.

Dr Chitala, who also served as State House and Finance deputy minister, also called for unity and co-existence in the former ruling party.

He said while people in a democratic dispensation had the right to possess and disseminate opposing views, the factions in MMD should co-exist for the sake of peace.

“Everyone has the right to hold an opposing view but the challenge for the aggrieved parties is to reach consensus and move on,” Dr Chitala said.

FDD has no intention of forming a Pact with HH’s UPND-Nawakwi

28

Edith Nawakwi
Edith Nawakwi

FORUM for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi has ruled out any possibility of teaming up with the United Party for National Development (UPND) in this year’s general election.

Speaking when she featured on ‘The Assignment’ programme on Muvi TV on Sunday, Ms Nawakwi said the FDD has no intentions of forming a pact with UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, because such a partnership had collapsed in the past.

She said rumours had been surfacing that the two parties were formalising talks for an alliance and that such talk was non existent.

“UPND is notorious in a number of areas, certain party officials have been going round announcing the impending alliance with FDD, but we are not going to do that because this party has been in several alliances before and they failed,” Ms Nawakwi said.

She said the FDD could not ‘escort’ another political party to win an election, because her party enjoyed massive support from the Zambians.

Meanwhile, Ms Nawakwi has urged agricultural students to consider venturing into agro-business upon completing their studies.

She said in the face of harsh economic realities, students should not depend only on formal employment, but venture into private businesses such as agriculture, which offered good retains if well tended.

She said there was need to re-focus attention from maize to crops such as sunflower and groundnuts.

“We need to be smart and discover which other crops we can invest in. Is it millet, sunflower or groundnuts? These are some of the crops that we should give enough attention so that agriculture grows alongside maize,” she said.

ZNFU Council reaffirms decision to dissolves investment firm, Lizara

ZNFU President Dr. Evelyn Nguleka
ZNFU President Dr. Evelyn Nguleka

The Zambia National Farmers Union has reaffirmed its 2014 Council resolution to dissolve Lizara Investments Limited.

At its special council meeting held on Monday, ZNFU also requested the Board to expedite the process of winding up the transfer of shares of ZANACO shares to ZNFU.
Lizara is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which was created by ZNFU to protect its 3.41 percent shares in ZANACO.

It is now believed that those shares in ZANACO are now valued at more than US$9 million and are at the centre of a row at ZANACO which has seen fraud allegations levelled at the ZNFU Board and its Executive Director Evelyn Nguleka.

But Dr Nguleka said in a statement released after Monday’s Special Council meeting that the Council resolved to urge the ZBFU Board and management to continue engaging cooperating partners until the audit process is finalised.

“The Council reiterated the need to speed up the conclusion of ongoing audit process so that the final audit report is used to provide the basis for the Council to make necessary decisions and or to take appropriate action (s) at its next ordinary meeting scheduled for April/beginning May 2016,” Dr Nguleka said.

“The Council requested the ZNFU management to provide resources for the second formal draft audit report as requested by and agreed with the cooperating partners,” she said.

Dr Nguleka said the Council requested the ZNFU Board to follows up with the Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) and obtain a response on the progress made this far on the request for ZICA to review the entire audit process and the findings of the preliminary audit report.

“The ZNFU Council urged the Board to continue engaging the cooperating partners until the audit process is completed.”

I won’t be surprised if UPND starts forcing civil servants to receive HH- Mumbi Phiri

29

PF Deputy GS Mumbi Phiri,
PF Deputy GS Mumbi Phiri,

PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri says she will not be surprised if UPND cadres start to force civil servants to receive their President Hakainde Hichilema.

Commenting on the latest spat of political violence which occurred in Bwengwa on Saturday Ms Phiri said it was unheard of for cadres to beat up government workers for receiving the President.
She said behavior of the cadres should not be entertained in a democratic and civilised country like Zambia.

She said political violence was what led the former ruling party, UNIP to abolish multiparty politics in the country and that the UPND should not push the PF into taking that rout adding that the ANC under Simon Mwansa Kapwapwa forced the ruling UNIP to resort to one party state because of the violent behavior of his party.

On the dilapidated Bwengwa primary school which the UPND leader attended Hakainde Hichilema, Ms Phiri said people should learn to plough back to communities they come from and that when one is blessed with riches it was only fair to pay a little to communities which played a part to their success.

She claimed that she often donates paint and other small things to Kamuchanga primary school in Mufulira were she attended her primary education.

Allowing MMD to die would be killing democracy in the country- Nakacinda

5

Raphael Nakacinda MMD Spokesperson
Raphael Nakacinda MMD Spokesperson

Opposition MMD Spokesperson Raphael Nakacinda has appealed to all well meaning members of the party and Zambians at large not to let the challenges in the party lead to its oblivion.

Speaking when he featured on Joy FM’s the Platform radio program Mr Nakacinda said the MMD is the only party with a democratic template in the country and that allowing it to die would be killing democracy in the country as it is the party considered to be the mother of democracy in the nation.

He said the MMD needs to raise above personal issues and deal with its challenges squarely without individuals advancing selfish interests.

“We need to aspire to grow our democracy to a level were we talk about issues no matter how sensitive without putting knives on the necks of each other and persuade one another amicably and that is what is expected at least of MMD because we are the mother of democracy in this country.

“I can tell you even the question that you have raised on whether MMD can survive the current challenges I can tell you that MMD needs to survive what we are going through because we are the only party with a clear democratic template, we are the only party which has demonstrated for the past 25 years that we are willing to engage in intraparty democracy processes to arrive at decisions or choose leadership,” he said.

He added “If MMD goes into extinction I can tell you that what goes into extinction is democracy in this country because the other political parties have not demonstrated in their history that they are committed to the tenets of democracy, it is MMD that stands out in that regard.”

And Mr Nakacinda has said that he has not fallen out with party President Nevers Mumba.
He said there has not been rift between him and Dr Mumba and that if there was any misunderstanding between they would be able to talk about it because there is no challenge that can insurmountable to be resolved.

On the differences of opinions as to whether the party is due for a convention Mr Nakacinda refused to comment stating that the issue was in court hence he could not comment.

He was however quick to mention that the safety of MMD as an institution would only be arssured by following the party constitution as it protects the party from external, internal as well as selfish agendas of individuals.

Police arrest 6 UPND cadres in Choma

9

zambiaPolicelogo
THE Police in Southern Province have arrested six suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres who assaulted Patriotic Front (PF) member Jenna Phiri last Saturday in the central business district of Choma.

Phiri 27, was assaulted by six cadres last Saturday February 13, 2016 in Choma.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Godwin Phiri who confirmed the arrests yesterday said they would appear in court soon.

Mr Phiri said all the arrested cadres were all of Choma and include Marcus Ng’andu 26, Saidi Mwale 24, Kizito Siamani 35, Steve Kalonga 23, Job Munsaka 23 and Jonathan Mwanza 27.

And the Patriotic Front (PF) in Southern Province has strongly condemned last Saturday’s attacks on members of the public that attended the rally that was addressed by Republican President Edgar Lungu in Bweengwa.

PF Member of the Central Committee Syacheye Madyekuku who was speaking during a meeting called by the party’s women wing at the secretariat in Choma yesterday said President Lungu was the Republican President and was free to hold a meeting in any part of the country.

Mr Madyekuku said acts of violence were becoming too much and warned the United Party for National Development (UPND) to desist from attacking its members because the youths in the PF were being restrained from revenging and it was becoming difficult.

“We condemn the action by the UPND and wish to warn the UPND to desist because our youths are watching and we have just been restraining them from fighting back.

“President Lungu was a free citizen and was the Republican President and was free to have a meeting anywhere in the country,” he said. Mr Madyekuku who was part of the people that fought for Multiparty in the country said they fought so hard to bring it and challenged the UPND to fight on ideologies than engaging in acts of violence.

He said following the attacks the PF in Southern Province would now take advantage of opposition habit of fighting by embarking on grassroot mobilisation.

“We shall use this habit by UPND to mobilise the party and score more votes for President Lungu that he wins without a second round,” he said.

Choma PF district chairperson Kebby Mbewe said the party decided to call for the meeting because of the continued harassment of its members by the UPND.

“PF women felt that there freedom was being curtailed by the continued attacks of its members,” he said.

North Western province Minister Dawson Kafwaya inspects RDA depot

Government has dispelled reports that the contractors engaged to upgrade the 169 kilometers Solwezi -Chingola road have abandoned the project.

Local Government Deputy Minister, Dawson Kafwaya says contrary to the reports, works on the road linking the North Western Province to the rest of the country are still on course.

Mr. Kafwaya has further assured the Nation that the Solwezi-Chingola road will be commissioned by June 2017.

The local Government Deputy Minister said pictures on social media suggesting that no traffic is getting in or out of the North Western province due to the dilapidated state of the road are malicious.

Mr Kafwaya who has inspected the on-going road works said all the three contractors engaged for the project are on site.

He has told ZNBC News in an interview in Solwezi yesterday that 14 percent of the upgrade of the K1 billion road has been done.

Meanwhile, Buildcon construction one of the firms engaged to work on 40 kilometers stretch has finished installing a $2 million asphalt plant.

Buildon Project Engineer Luthar Babo has assured Government that the road works will now advance following the installation of the asphalt plant.

Tayali attacks PF, describes President Lungu as mediocre

95

Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali
Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali

Outspoken Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali has sensationally attacked President Edgar Lungu describing his leadership as mediocre.

Mr Tayali said President Lungu should personally take the blame for the failure by his senior aides and Ministers to perform according to people’s expectations.

In a lengthy Facebook posting, Tayali said mediocrity is in President Lungu himself and jot his officials.

“People keep blaming the State House staff that, they shield President Lungu, I don’t think I am accepting that anymore because at the end of the day he is the boss with power to make his team work to his satisfaction. Mediocrity is in the President himself (if you want hate me for telling you the truth),” Mr Tayali said.

“I told President Lungu to fire Kaingu and sort out the UNZA problem, but till now President Lungu is holding on to the problem not knowing that it is growing like a political boiler. Please Ba PF stop taking people for granted, I must tell you that your way of doing things is far below the expectations of a ruling party.”

Mr Tayali said President Lungu should know that leadership is not about being closed up in State House talking to a handful same people saying President Lungu should open those doors of State House and listen to raw data, then process it.

“President Lungu as far as am concerned is inaccessible to the ordinary Zambians including his vital PF cadres. He has turned out to be an elitist President instead of being with the people,” he said.

He added, “FTJ and Sata used to call people from State House or when they are abroad to clarify issues but I have never heard it from Lungu, actually even me I don’t know President Lungu. But I know almost all his workers but that is not enough to feel that my issues are taken care of.”

“Yes, people have different style of leadership but you can adopt what has worked in the past. Going to visit compounds and listening to a few carefully selected people, especially Chiefs, will not help him. You cannot know people by simply shaking hands with them as you go by.”
