Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has thanked President Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND Government for recognizing and respecting the national day of prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation.

Zambia on Tuesday, 18th October, 2022 commemorated the national day of prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation countrywide.

Republican Vice President Mutale Nalumango led people in commemorating the main event held in Lusaka.

This is the second time the national day of prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation is being commemorating under the UPND Government.

When attending Holy Mass at Lusaka’s Mtendere Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Parish on Tuesday, the former Head of State said he was grateful to President Hichilema and his Government for maintaining the day.

Mr. Lungu introduced the national day of prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation seven years ago and made the day a public holiday.

The charismatic leader told fellow worshipers that he was happy that the Day has continued to be observed.

Mr. Lungu was accompanied to Church by his former presidential running mate in the 2021 General Elections Prof. Nkandu Luo, former Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo, former Mines Minister Richard Musukwa and several other PF officials.

‘Firstly, I greet all of you. How are you? Secondly, I want to confess that I did not come here to make any statement at all but that I should thank the persistence or ulunkonena from one Honourable Nkandu Luo for forcing me to say something. If it wasn’t for her persuasion I would have just opted to go away without saying anything,” Mr. Lungu said.

“Since I have been asked to say something, I will say my gratitude today is to President Hakainde Hichilema and UPND for recognizing and respecting this day and allow all of us to continue worshipping and praying on the 18th of October each year. To you my brother I say God bless you.I am saying this because people were expecting Lungu to say this, Lungu to say that,” he said.

“Today, it’s for all of us to recognize that we humble ourselves, go before the Lord and seek his face in repentance. God will surely bless us. So, I also want to emphasize that there is nothing special about being President. Just like I was President, Honourable Hakainde Hichilema has become His Excellence the President. God works through all of us and none of us is special. We cannot restrict God’s work or desire through space and time of personalities.God will surely work through whosoever he choose to use. And I think I have already spoken enough aiini? God bless you all. Thank you,” Mr.Lungu concluded.

Meanwhile, in Ndola selected residents and members of the clergy joined the rest of the country in observing the national day of prays , fasting, repentance and Reconciliation at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee , Bishop Francis Mumba urged the people to actively participate in prayers and worship adding that Zambia is on the path of restoration.

The clergy also hailed the declaration of Zambia as a christian nation and highlighted its significance.

In Kitwe, District Commissioner Lawrence Mwanza in his keynote speech as guest of honour emphasized the importance of peace to the country’s developmental agenda

Mr . Mwanza said without peace and unity there can be no sustainable development.

He further called on all Zambian citizens to invest in the country’s economy and take advantage of various empowerment initiatives that the New Dawn government is offering.

In Kitwe the national day of prayer, fasting and reconciliation was held at Oasis of Love Church in Nkana West – under the theme, “Promoting National Unity, Peace and Integration for A Prosperous Zambia through Hard Work”.

In his opening remarks, organising committee chairperson Bishop Raddy Lewilla, underscored the importance of the national day of prayer fasting and reconciliation to the prosperity of Zambia.

Bishop Lewilla said the day gives Zambia an opportunity to renew it’s relationship with God and thank him for his interventions especially in times of pandemics like Covid-19.

In a sermon, Pastor Boyd Muwowo from the Seventh-Day Adventist Church – Nkana Mission District , called for the preservation of peace that exists in Zambia.

Pastor Muwowo said Zambia can not develop nor prosper without peace, charging that peace is an important subject of every society.

Meanwhile, Chililabombwe District Commissioner Precious Njekwa led the celebration with a call on Zambians to continue upholding peace.

Ms.Njekwa warned citizens against taking for granted the peace and unity Zambia enjoys since Independence.

In her speech during the commemoration of the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation held at Chililabombwe Secondary School, Ms.Njekwa regretted that some people are fond of propagating divisions in the country especially in politics.

The Masebo Infanny: The $100 million Scandal at Ministry of Health

14

By Nkonkomalimba Kapumpe

The President and UPND Government should find out the following over the now cancelled $ 100 million contract, for they might be embarrassed in the next few weeks.

So, did ba Masebo request for a car from a contractor? Have you checked the communication between the contractor and Minister? Does the contractor and former PS have more information to bring out to the public? Some of us even heard about the make of the car fews months ago. I hear the lawyer for a contractor is Sangwa? Paipa ka. I dont think Sangwa can take up such a case without any merits. . better to pre-empty.

Ba ACC did the former PS health not tell you all this when you invited him for interviews? When it’s PF you even do tuma video’s and updates. Have you investigated and cleared Masebo? And the PS tell us why you interviewed and the results ?

You dared us to give you the current corruption case to investigate, Is this not worth some salt ? Was she not implicated by her former PS in the interviews? It’s her former controlling officer ka so this can’t be taken lightly . Did you not interview the contractor on the phone? Ka update kabili? so far two key witnesses ka?

If Masebo is clean, help her by suspending and investigating her for a few weeks, like the way MMD used to clear its Ministers. Only one Minister went to jail after losing power. Whether innocent or not this will start to haunt her after five years if she is covered now, it will not matter whether HH wins or not in 2026. You people never learn , look at former PF Ministers today “Its better you are investigated when in good books with the powers that be”. I advised ba PF the same they did not listen and they thought the allegations were foolish and silly, here we are today. You are not doing her favour but RB/ MMD did favour to my sweetheart over Zamtel lol

I can rest assure you that more allegations are coming and they will try to verify them one by one. The public courts are very difficult control.Once you are painted black it will not matter what good you will do..even gift bag man will be seen to have been covered or protected..Fertilizer deals will be daunted more…You will be called ba Kabola even by your own people. Credibility lost

What harm can come out of the investigation just for a few weeks ? Respond to corruption allegations, you are bein painted black slowly and steadily.

National Day of Prayer should inspire us to uphold national values, principles – President Hichilema

10

President Hakainde Hichilema says the National Day of Prayer, Fasting, Repentance and Reconciliation inspires all Zambians to uphold the national values and principles as enshrined in the constitution and in line with the declaration of Zambia as a Christian Nation.

President Hichilema in a speech on his behalf by Vice President Mutale Nalumango during the observation of the National Day of Prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation at Lusaka’s Showground noted that the day provides all with an opportunity to reconcile with God and with one another, and say no to all forms of bad vices such as corruption, gender-based violence, alcohol and substance abuse.

‘’We must say no to corruption the cancer that robbers our nation with much needed resources for development, we must say no to gender based violence a real threat to the existence of the family and stability of the nation, we must say no alcohol and substance abuse a danger to one’s health,’’ stated President Hichilema.

He observed that the theme: Promoting national unity, Peace and Integration for A Prosperous Zambia through Hard work, is a reminder to all to come together in promoting national unity and peace regardless of one’s political affiliation and belief.

The President also commended the church for its relentless efforts in promoting peace and unity in the nation through prayer.

“I urge the church to continue praying for our nation, our citizens and everyone in leadership. The church has an obligation to continue unifying our nation at all times. As a government we will continue to work with the church to stir our nation in the right direction,’’ he said.

The Head of State further urged all Zambians to treasure and to uphold the national motto of One Zambia One National which is a statement of unity and oneness.

And National Day of Prayer Organizing Committee Chairperson, Esther Jani said that the day is a reminder to all Zambians to continually seek God and acknowledge Him as the God of the Zambian country which is a Christian nation.

Prophetess Jani stated that this year’s National Day of Prayer’s theme is a call to all to place handwork and integration at the center of the developmental agenda of transforming Zambia into a better country.

She said that every citizen must put aside their selfish ambition and focus on God in being each other’s source of strength and encouragement.

‘’We must release that prayer is not a substitute of hard work but a reminder to work extra hard as we trust in God to help us transform our nation,’’ said Prophetess Jani.

Meanwhile, Evangelical Fellowship of Board Chairperson, Bishop Paul Mususu in his sermon urged political leaders to cease from giving handouts to people but instead focus on empowering the nation with skills that can help them to sustain themselves.

Bishop Mususu noted that giving handouts cannot help the people to sustain themselves in the long run but it is temporary and promotes laziness.

He also noted that peace and prosperity is centered on hard work and each citizen of Zambia must play their part in hard work in order to promote prosperity in the country.

‘’I call up on my fellow members of the clergy to preach the gospel of grace and encourage their members to work hard and avoid the gospel of prosperity that only promotes laziness.

Clergymen should avoid preaching about miracle money but encourage their congregants to work hard because hard work brings profit,’’ said Bishop Mususu.

The event which was characterised with songs of worship and praise by various choirs was also attended by Cabinet ministers, former first lady Esther Lungu, former vice president Inonge Wina and opposition political party leaders.

President Hichilema dates Copperbelt to inspect project in Kitwe and Ndola

President Hakainde Hichilema is tomorrow expected on the Copperbelt Province for a two-day working visit.

The President will arrive at Simon Mwansa Kapwewe International Airport at 09:00 hours before proceeding to Chifubu township to inspect a mini hospital under construction.

Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary, Augustine Kasongo said today that the Head of State will visit Kitwe and Ndola districts respectively to inspect some projects.

Mr Kasongo said among the projects to be visited includes the construction of a mini hospital in Chifubu township in Ndola and several other projects in the two districts.

He added that President Hichilema once through with the program, is expected to return to Lusaka on Thursday, October 20,2022 .

Meanwhile, Students from Copperbelt University (CBU) and Mukuba University have thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for re-introducing the meal allowances to students sponsored under the Students Loans Board in public universities.

The Students who chanted praises to President Hichilema presented their thanksgiving letter to Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo to in turn present it to the President.

And CBU interim president Matakala Matakala said President Hichilema has sorted out the students’ problems by re-introducing the meal allowance which was scrapped off by the Patriotic Front government.

“We thank the President for re- introducing meal allowances and by doing so, he has sorted out our problems, this is indeed the change we voted for, ” Mr. Matakala said.

And Mukuba University students Union president Gilbert Mwansa appealed to the President to buy a bus for the students and to address the accommodation challenges at the institution.

And in receiving the thanksgiving letter Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo thanked the students for appreciating the works of the President.

Mr. Matambo said President Hichilema has put education among his top priorities.

“You have a President who has education at his heart that is why he has re-introduced student’s meal allowance, introduced free education, recruited teachers as well as introducing a boarding fee component on the Constituency Development Funds (CDF), ” He said.

He promised the students that they have an action-oriented President as demonstrated through the various fulfilled promises he made such introduction of free education, recruitment of teachers and health workers as well as paying retirees of their long-awaited dues.

Mr. Matambo also promised the students that he will deliver their thanks giving letter to the President tomorrow.

He also assured the students that the President will attend to their requests.

Government has re-introduced student’s meal allowances and students will start receiving the money from January next year.

The re-introduction of the meal allowances was announced in Parliament by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane when he presented the 2023 National Budget.

There’s nothing special about being President-Edgar Lungu

32

Former President Edgar Lungu has thanked the people of Zambia for continuing to observe the National Day of Prayer and reconciliation, seven years after he decreed the date.

Mr Lungu told fellow worshipers that he was happy that the Day has continued to be observed.

Addressing congregants after attending Mass at Lusaka’s Mtendere Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Parish today, the former Head of State paid gratitude to President Hichilema and the new dawn administration for recognizing and respecting the day of prayer.

And Mr. Lungu says there is nothing special about being President saying God can use anyone to do His work.

“God works through ordinary people whom he chooses to use at any given point, Mr. Lungu said.

“God chose to use me as President once just as he has now chosen to use President Hichilema so everything is in God’s hands, there will always be another President,” he said.

The former President who indicated from the start that he didn’t want to speak a lot prayed for Zambians to remain a loving and God-fearing people under the doctrine of Zambia as a Christian nation.

Mr. Lungu said no one can restrict God’s work or desire through time and space or personalities, insisting that God works with whoever he chooses.

And Mary Queen of Peace Parish Priest Father Evaristo Kabungo urged citizens to desist from fighting one another as they are not enemies.

Fr. Kabungo said Zambians must embrace and love one another instead of investing in negative energy, hurting or punishing each other.

Fr. Kabungo alerted Zambians from across the national divide that hurting each other only hurts the country and slows economic national progress and unity.

“What we (Zambians) should remember is that every time we fight as brother, sister husband or wife or any other family member or friend, we are doing the devil’s job. The devil rejoices in your fights and divisions, stop doing his work and love each other,” Fr. Kabungo told the congregation.

Fr. Kabungo said it was not by accident that President Lungu declared 18th October a National Day of Prayer and national reconciliation seven years ago.

“The President (Edgar Lungu) must have been driven by God and the holy spirit to declare this day as thus in order to bring Zambians together to heal, forgive and love each other,” said Father Kabungo.

Fr. Kabungo took advantage of the huge gathering to also caution Zambians against anti-Christian values such as homosexualism and lesbianism he said could undermine Zambian culture.

“There´s no way you can demand as human rights something which is not inherently human (gay rights) according to our values and traditions,” said Fr Kabungo.

“Fr. Kabungo said, “mwamuna namwamuna kukwatilana, (man and man getting married is foolishness) thats foolishness…thats embracing a culture of death which is not Zambian.”

Fr. Kabungo also said lesbian and homosexual couples in Zambia where they exist must not be allowed to adopt children for fear of permanently “damaging these innocent children because children need to be brought up in a healthy traditional environment” of man as husband and woman as wife, not men and men or women and women against Zambian cultural and traditional values of many years.

Inculcating demerits of corruption vital – ACC

0

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Southern Province says engaging school pupils in understanding the bad vices of corruption will help inculcate a sense of responsibility as well as help them grow into responsible citizens.

Livingstone District ACC Manager, Harry Tembo pointed out that offering knowledge to young people on the demerits of corruption will help them know how the vice affects society.

Mr Tembo said Young people should be given a chance to learn the bad vices that come with corruption and how best they could avoid being entangled in it’s circle.

Mr Tembo was speaking when he yesterday graced an Anti-Corruption Commission sponsored Debate for selected Secondary Schools in Livingstone.

The debate was centred around the motion” is corruption the root cause of poverty in Zambia”.

The schools that were opposing and proposing to the motion included Hillcrest, St Raphael’s, St Mary’s and David Livingstone Secondary School.

Vice President urges Zambians to emulate the spirit of independence heroes, who worked hard to free the nation from colonial rule

7

As Zambia prepare to celebrate the 58th Independence Anniversary, Republican Vice President Mutale Nalumango is urging Zambians to emulate the spirit of independence heroes, who worked hard to free the nation from colonial rule.

Zambia is on 24 October, 2022 celebrating it’s 58th Independence Anniversary.

Zambia attained political Independence from British rule on 24th October, 1964.

When launching the independence week for the 58th anniversary, Mrs Nalumango said Independence week is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and mothers of the nation.

She said the current generation is enjoying the freedom that heroes and heroines, both sung and unsung, fought very hard to attain over 58 years ago.

Ms. Nalumango said during the Independence week Zambians must respond to the clarion call of restoring human dignity to those in need.

“It is my rare honour and privilege to address the nation this evening on the launch of the independence week for the 58th independence anniversary which we will be celebrating next week on Monday, 24th October, 2022.Independence week is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by the founding fathers and mothers of this great nation, for our country’s independence. We are, indeed, a generation that is enjoying the freedom that our heroes and heroines, both sung and unsung, fought very hard for, 58 years ago.Country men and women, independence week is unique in the history of our country. It is during this week that we are reminded of the need to emulate the spirit in which our independence heroes and heroines practiced the philosophy of humanism. They gave a service to one another, especially the less privileged in our communities. It is during this week, that as a nation, we must respond to the clarion call of restoring human dignity to those in need,” Ms. Nalumango stated.

She encouraged Zambians to consider doing some charity works in the run up to the Independence Day celebration.

“We must take time to share with the sick in hospital, our brothers and sisters in correctional facilities and our mothers and fathers in homes for the aged, among others.it is during this week that we must extend a hand of love, friendship and care to that neighbour struggling to have a roof over their head, that mother reaching out for a better tomorrow and that street child yearning for a warm meal. Indeed, it is during this week that we must truly respond to our Christian values and love one another as Jesus Christ loved his church.Country men and women, as we commence the independence week tomorrow, we are called upon to identify and participate in various activities in our communities. It could be a community school building that needs a coat of paint or a hospital that needs a donation of blood. A gesture of support will go a long way to alleviate the suffering of our less privileged brothers and sisters,” she said.

Mrs. Nalumango said doing charity work is in line with national values and principles as enshrined in the Republican Constitution.

“Let us, therefore, give a true and practical meaning to this year’s independence week, by sparing a moment to perform the different activities in our communities. By doing so, we will be promoting the spirit of love and oneness. This is in line with the declaration of our country as a Christian nation. This is also in line with our national values and principles as enshrined in our constitution.Country men and women, the new dawn administration is committed to actualizing our national values and principles, including unity and patriotism. In this aspect, government has lined up a number of activities that will be undertaken country-wide. We must all participate in one form of community work as we commemorate the independence week. I urge you, therefore, to actively participate in this noble cause,” Mrs. Nalumango said.

She also encouraged Zambians to pray for one another.

“A number of activities have been lined up during the independence week. A major highlight among these activities is the national day of prayer, fasting, repentance and reconciliation which will be observed as a public holiday country-wide on Tuesday, 18th October, 2022.I urge everyone to find time to attend the various inter- denominational prayers that have been organized at designated places of worship. Let us join in the collective prayers. Let us pray for each other. Let us pray for our nation. The Independence week activities will end on the eve of our 58th independence anniversary, on Sunday, 23rd October with the symbolic hoisting of our national flag as the climax event. This activity will take place at selected venues across the country,” Mrs. Nalumango said

She highlighted the importance of participating in the Independence Day celebration.

Mrs. Nalumango further called for the embracing of love, peace and unity in Zambia.

“I urge all of us to find time and participate in this historic event.Country men and women, the success of the various independence week activities is dependent on the good will of all us, including the private sector. I, therefore, appeal to every one of us to respond to the call and extend a helping hand towards the hosting of these activities. As we undertake the independence week activities, let us also remain law abiding citizens. Let us embrace love, peace and unity. This is the key foundation upon which our nation is built.Country men and women, I now have the singular honour and privilege to officially launch the 2022 independence week. May God bless you,May God bless our country, Zambia,” she concluded.

Small, artisanal mines Given 90 days Amnesty to formalize their operations

2

The government has given 90 days amnesty to small scale and artisanal mines to formalise and legalise their operations by obtaining mining licenses.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Paul Kabuswe, says the 90 days amnesty will help to curtail all illegal miners who are involved in mining various minerals, including gold, gemstone, copper and many others in different parts of the country.

Mr. Kabuswe warns that any small scale and artisanal miner who will be found operating illegally after the ninety days amnesty will be prosecuted.

He was speaking at a media briefing today in Lusaka where he announced the 90 days amnesty which starts today, October 17, 2022 up to January 2023.

“We want to curtail any illegalities in the mining sector especially among the small-scale miners and the artisan miners who are involved in mining various minerals across the country,” he said.

He explained that this move has been taken following the allocation of funds to the sector in the proposed 2023 national budget for the formalisation of the small-scale and artisanal mining sector.

“Therefore, we encouraged small scale miners to form cooperatives in order to help them operate in a systematic and formal way so that they can gain good profit,’’ said Mr. Kabuswe.

And Mr. Kabuswe has announced that the cadastre department will be reopened on Wednesdays 19, 2022 for licensing of all mines following approval by Cabinet.

Mr. Kabuswe stated that the Cabinet also approved that every mining company will be restricted to an initial number of five licenses.

Those that have more than five licenses will be required to justify why they should be given more licenses.

He said his ministry will slowly put in place a standard statutory instrument (SI) that will restrict the number of licenses that a mining company should obtain to avoid speculations by those with too many licenses.

‘’We as a government are not going to allow any particular individual or company to have 40 or 50 licenses alone. Going forward that is not going to be accepted because we want sanity in the mining sector,’’ said Mr. Kabuswe.

He explained that the reason for the restriction to five licenses only is because a lot of licenses were used for purposes of speculating.

CB Minister Elisha Matambo urges youths to form cooperatives in order to access Government empowerment

0

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo is encouraging more youths to form cooperatives in order to access Government empowerment aimed at improving the local economy.

Mr. Matambo said access Government empowerment is key to business establishment and expansion.

He said the New Dawn government has allocated funds for youth empowerment through Constituency Development Fund
(CDF).

Mr. Matambo was speaking when Prison Fellowship Zambia empowered newly trained tailors with 50 sewing machines during their graduation at Kawama Catholic Church in Ndola on the Copperbelt Province.

The Copperbelt Minister, who officiated at the graduation as guest of honour, highlighted the importance of skills development.

“It is an honor and privilege for me to be the guest of honour at this graduation ceremony where fifty (50) graduands who have gone through the required skills training to achieve this milestone where you are being awarded with certificates today.I am informed that though this is the 1st graduation ceremony, prison fellowship vocation training centre has graduated over 1000 graduates since 2003. It is also gratifying to note that those graduating today are also being empowered with sewing machine each from Prison Fellowship Zambia revolving fund in order for them to immediately venture into entrepreneurial journey of a lifetime.Greatness can be seen even before it manifests. I see before me graduands full of smiles, joy and ambition. It is my hope that this joy is not merely premised upon acquiring a certificate but actually getting set to make this world a better place. You have been trained in tailoring and designing, that’s why you are graduating today. As I observe you;I see the next fashion designer who will make Zambia proud. I see someone launch a new brand of garments that is proudly Zambian and African.l see all possibilities plastered on your faces,” Mr. Matambo said.

“To the graduating students today. We all have a natural admiration for entrepreneurs, especially those that have made it big, but none of us is usually ready for the true story of their journey. This story is premised on some key pillars which I shall quickly share with you.First – is discipline. Today’s youth are short of this. You want to wake up at your convenience, get to work at your convenience, earn big, spend like a multi-billionaire, be popular and have the world at your feet. Discipline is what makes you retain customers for your business simply because you always deliver as promised. Discipline is what allows your capital to grow because you prioritize it adequately.Second – is vision. This is a word spoken by many but utilized by few. As you embark upon your journey, I am sure you have a vision deep inside of you. That vision is one you should never give up on. Work towards it. Third – is commitment. Without commitment, there’s no success. Everyone basking in glory today has shown a high level of commitment to what they do. It doesn’t matter whether your success is overnight or not, commitment is the constant.Fourth – is bandwagon. Society has made us always desire the approval of others. Even a business idea we have come up with, is always subjected to the approval of those around us. While in some cases it is a good thing, I tell you here and now that most times it’s not good for entrepreneurs,” he said.

Mr. Matambo added:”There will always be challenges in your entrepreneurship journey and this may not be the time to delve into the details. However, I want your attitude towards challenges to change. Challenges are opportunities in waiting.Sixth – is time. Today’s generation of youths is the fastest generation. You want to get money, that house, a car, a lovely wife or husband, promotion, big sales all in a flash. That is not how good and lasting things come your way. That business you start today might take 3, 5, 10 or even 15 years to blossom. You just need to give it time and remain committed to it.Seventh – is failure. Failure is one thing that is demonized nearly everywhere, especially in the education system. For sure, no one wants to hear that this and that has failed. It gets so bad that most of us live life avoiding failure and this has killed our creativity. Failure is a steppingstone to success. Do not look at it with contempt.Eighth – is success. This is what drives us. Unfortunately, many look at it as an end point yet in reality, success is a journey. You aren’t successful because you have bought a car or acquired a house. Be careful about success that comes quickly, it is most likely no different from a house built on sand. This is the kind of success that makes one go into oblivion as fast as they came onto the scene. To the parents and guardians gathered here today, your generation believed in seeking employment from government and probably investing in real estate.”

In this new era, government jobs are as scarce as the white rhino, sit down with your children, and promote their talents by investing in their business ideas. You just might be surprised that the next big cloth factory business is in the mind of your child that is graduating today. The new dawn government through the leadership of his Excellence the Republican President Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has allocated funds for youth empowerment through the CDF. I am encouraging you to form cooperatives so you can access these funds for your business establishment and expansion. In conclusion, may I express my profound gratitude for being invited to officiate at the 1st graduation ceremony, I will be failing in my duties if I don’t extend my appreciation to Prison Fellowship Zambia Management and staff who have made it possible for these young men and women to have their trades,” Mr. Matambo concluded.

Prison Fellowship Zambia Executive Director Teddy Mweetwa said the training is aimed at empowering inmates, ex-inmates, families and the vulnerable in society.

“Prison fellowship Zambia is currently providing skills training programs in the Correctional facilities and communities, in tailoring and computer skills.Prison Fellowship Zambia with financial support from hope bearer foundation is running tailoring project at Kansenshi, Luanshya Correctional facilities, Mushili and Kawama Catholic Parish. These trainings are meant to equip inmates, ex-inmates, their spouses and their families to basically acquire skills which will help them to continue earning a living even when the bread-winner is incarcerated in the correctional facilities. The training is meant to empower them with knowledge and skills for survival purposes.Ladies and gentlemen, I want to remind you, in case you didn’t know, that tailoring skill is a life skill – meaning for life. – Ladies and gentlemen, I want to make mention that Prison Fellowship Zambia believes that inmates, ex-inmates like everyone else has the potential to do wonders if well supported. To graduating students, you are graduating today; you are receiving your beautiful certificates this morning. It’s your precious moment and time of joy for you all. Please go and make use of the knowledge which you have acquired here. You have completed your race and you ran it successfully,” Mr. Mweetwa said.

He told the tailors to be honest in their dealings.

“As you go to serve the people out there, please attend to your clients and customers in good time and in a faithful manner, I know tailors, Radio and TV repairs are always put in the same whatsapp group. The reason is that they delay in completing the task, please be different yourselves. You have been trained as specialized tailors so take care of your families, be of service to the people out there.Master of Ceremony sir, may I take this opportunity to thank the trainer and all staff for Prison Fellowship Zambia for their capability and Management for ensuring that the training was done successfully.Master of ceremony; allow me now to appreciate the guest of honour for dedicating his precious time to come to officiate at this important graduation today. To Prison Fellowship Zambia Management; staff May I simply say well done for facilitating this 1st Graduating ceremony. I know it was not an easy task.4 May, I thank our donor (Hope Bearer Foundation) for providing the much needed resources which enabled this training to be completed and the graduation which we are witnessing today,” Mr. Mweetwa said.

He concluded:”As Prison Fellowship Zambia we spent a good amount of money to train you, purchase these sewing machines which we giving you today.Today we are giving them to you so you can start doing tailoring projects in your home, markets etc. I want to state categorically that these machines were bought from revolving fund from Prison Fellowship Zambia. As you are all aware that you will need to repay back the amount of money which we bought them. Once you pay back the money we shall plough it back and buy more sewing machines to enable the class of 2022 intake to also receive sewing machines at the next graduation next year. The same way we have given you today.”

Children with HIV at greater risk for impaired neurological development

0

New research in Zambia finds that children infected with HIV are significantly more likely to do worse in neurological assessments despite having well-controlled HIV disease.

The study suggests that they may struggle with cognitive and mental health issues.

However, the research also indicates that early intervention – in the form of better nutrition and antiretroviral therapies – may help close the gap.

“HIV remains a major global health burden and children who are exposed to the virus during childbirth are known to be at greater risk for neurocognitive and psychiatric problems, like depression, as they age,” said David Bearden, M.D., assistant professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) and senior author of the study, which appears in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.

“This research is an attempt to understand if these problems persist and become more pronounced over time, and whether we can predict who will do well cognitively and who will not.”

The study is the most recent example of a decades-long collaboration involving an international team of researchers.

Since 1994, URMC neurologist Gretchen Birbeck, M.D., has partnered with the government of Zambia and clinicians and researchers with the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) to study neurological problems associated with infectious diseases like HIV and malaria, which remain major public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Neurology Research Office established by Birbeck on the main hospital campus now serves as a hub for several National Institutes of Health-funded research and training programs that have helped grow the number of UTH neurologists and clinical research staff and increase opportunities to collaborate with URMC neurologists, medical students, and trainees.

The new findings come from the HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders in Zambia (HANDZ) study, an ongoing longitudinal study that is following a cohort of 600 HIV positive and negative Zambian children ages 8 to 18 for 5 years.

With approximately 70 percent of global cases, sub-Saharan Africa is disproportionately impacted by HIV.

While combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is widely accessible, many infected children still go on to experience associated neurocognitive and psychiatric deficits, such as delayed academic development and depression.

“These findings suggest that one of the most important thing that we can do is find kids with HIV early and get them on antiretroviral therapy, because if kids don’t get really sick from HIV, then they do much better cognitively,” said Bearden.

“The other key factor here is the nutritional piece and we’re doing more research to try to figure out exactly what kind of support could help improve cognition or prevent cognitive impairment in this population.”

Zambia restricts number of mining licences per company to five

0

Zambia says the number of mining licences that a company can hold at a time will be restricted to five to curb speculative purchases within the country’s licensing system.

The ministry of mines in February suspended the issuance of mining licences and commissioned an audit in response to public complaints about a lack of transparency.

“Every miner will be restricted to five licences and those that need more will have to justify it,” Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe said during a briefing on mining regulations.

“We have had a lot of licences being used for speculative purposes and we want to curtail that,” Kabuswe said.

He did not name the companies holding more than five licenses but said those should get in touch with the Ministry.

The audit revealed that some companies owned as many as 50 licences.

It also found that some were not registered with Zambia’s patents and companies registration agency and may not be paying tax.

The licensing department, which was expected to re-open on April 11, will resume work on Oct. 19, Mr. Kabuswe added.

He also said illegal miners would be given 90 days of amnesty to register with the ministry of mines.

Mr. Kabuswe said the review of the mining sector was in order to encourage more investment and increase the participation of Zambians in the mineral value chain.

He said restricting the number of mining licensing per entity will ensure that international companies wishing to acquire mining rights, partner with Zambians or companies owned by Zambians.

Forest 27 saga takes a new twist

Government  says  it  is in the process of recommending for the re-gazetting   of the forest 27 as it is an important recharge area that needs protection.

The development means that each person who has constructed structures in the area will have to explain how they found themselves in the protected area.

Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources  Minister Elijah Muchima who disclosed when a Ministerial committee toured the forest 27 in Chongwe district that  despite being advised by the ad-hoc committee to stop their development activities in the area most individuals have remained adamant.

“ People who were told to halt the construction of their structures in the forest reserve have continued and that investigation by the ad hoc committee is still ongoing and a report on the matter has been received, “ said the minister.

He said Government needs to manage forest 27 because it can regenerate and be restored to its original form over the years.

However, it’s the area the elite in society have exploited to set up state of the art structure overlooking the environmental well-being of  the Capital City.

“This forest can still regenerate and restored to its original form and this is why as Government we want to see how best to handle this matter in order to protect the environment, ” Mr. Muchima.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Garry Nkombo has also urged Zambians to avoid buying land at the forest and doing so will be at their risk.

Mr NKombo noted that people who have constructed houses  in the forest will be invited to bring all their documents to find out the time they commenced construction of the structures either when the forest was de-gazetted or before the time of de-gazetting.

He said they will find out from the people who have constructed in the forest area what motivated them to commence developments in the forest area.

Mr Nkombo said all their development plans will be assessed to find out which authority gave them the right to build in the recharge area ( Forest 27)  and also to find out how they acquired the properties they have constructed.

“Anyone who is buying land now from forest 27 is doing it at his or her  own risk and is appealing to the local authority to stop approving any building plan in this area,” Mr Nkombo said.

He further advised the Ministry of Land to stop issuing any title deed to any person intending to construct a building in forest 27 until all the matters are addressed.

Minister of Water Development and Sanitation Mike Mposha said the issue of forest 27 is still alive as they have been having inter- Ministerial meetings to address the matter concerning the challenge of the forest.

Mr Mpoha pointed out he is concerned with the damage that has been caused to Forest 27 because it is the recharge for Chalimbana River which is important for the people in Chongwe.

He said if nothing is done to protect forest 27 the province is going to have serious problems because the forest was earmarked as a recharge zone.

Zambia will never again default-Mutati

6

Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati says the government is determined to see to it that Zambia never again defaults on its loan obligations.

Mr Mutati said it is embarrassing to be labelled as a defaulter even at personal level adding that government is now engaging at the highest level with its creditors to discuss the current debt.

He said as a government, it has resolved that never again is going to be in a league of defaulters as a country.

Mr Mutati was speaking over the weekend when he graced the annual Money Summit which brought together some of Africa’s leading financial, corporate and entrepreneurial experts to share their knowledge around finances and financial success.

The goal of this summit was to enlighten participants practical ways on how to manage, grow and protect their money as well as passing it on to future generations as it is a wholesome approach to financial literacy.

Mr Mutati said at the government level, the worst is over as the new dawn administration has made a position to change on how the country behaves regarding money.

“We are saying money must be spent on priorities that change people’s lives unlike being wasteful. It must be invested to transform the people’s lives,” he said.

“On the other end, unless the private sector makes money, government will not make money. It is for this reason we have put a framework that enables the private sector to make money, hence stabilizing the exchange rate and inflation. When the exchange rate and inflation is stable, the private sector can then make profits,” he said.

He added, “We must also remember that if we want to make money, the principle of collaboration and partnership which we call Ubuntu should be paramount.”
