Mining affects energy deficit

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) says increased industrial activity on the Copperbelt has contributed to the energy deficit in Zambia.

ERB Copperbelt Regional Office Manager, Yohane Mukabe says most existing mines are expanding their operations.

He said this is in order to take advantage of the current high price of Copper on the International Market.

Mr. Mukabe said this in Kitwe, Wednesday during the recording of the Energy Conservation Campaign Week programme.

He also said a number of supporting industries to the mines are coming up in the province.

Mr. Mukabe said this is a sign that the Zambian economy is performing well.

And ZESCO Copperbelt Division Manager, Muntungwa Mugala said load shedding is expected to end in March next year.

Don’t victimise Zambians- Katumbi

Katanga Governor, Moses Katumbi has warned Congolese National Police manning the Pedicle Road and Chembe bridge against victimizing Zambians.

Mr. Katumbi says any policeman who will victimize Zambians will be fired.

Mr. Katumbi said the completion of the Chembe bridge should not be used by officers as an opportunity to mistreat Zambians.

He said the completion of the bridge has generated a lot of interest from foreign nationals who are now using the Pedicle road and the Chembe bridge.

Mr. Katumbi was speaking when he adressed villagers at Mwenda on his way to the Chembe bridge.

And speaking earlier at Lubembe bridge on the Pedicle road, Mr. Katumbi said he will allow a 24 hours operation of the bridge.

Mr. Katumbi said it would be pointless to restrict the movement of people once the bridge is completed.

Meanwhile Mr. Katumbi has commended President Levy Mwanawasa for the initiative to construct the Chembe bridge.

He said he is happy that the bridge is nearing completion and is looking forward to working with the Zambian government in tarring of the Pedicle road.

Mr. Katumbi was accompanied by Luapula Province Minister, Chrispine Musosha, Copperbelt Province Minister, Mwansa Mbulakulima and Works and Supply Deputy Minister, Mundia Ndalamei.

Developmental meetings shunned

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elijah Chisanga has expressed disappointment at the failure by most provincial heads to attend developmental and planning meetings.

Mr. Chisanga has since appealed to technocrats to not belittle such meetings as they are meant for the province to strategize on how to propel development in the province.

He was speaking during the 73rd Provincial Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention, Control and Management Committee meeting held at the Provincial Administration offices.

Mr. Chisanga called for planning ahead of the onset of the rain season as failure to plan would have disastrous consequences because some parts of the province are disease prone.

And Lusaka Province Director of Health Dr Tackson Lambart lamented that qualified personnel were reluctant to ply their trade in rural parts of the province.

He called for incentives for skilled human resource posted to rural areas.

Govt satisfied with ZWCCF restructuring – Mukuma

Labour and Social Security Minister Ronald Mukuma says Government is satisfied with amount of Progress in restructuring the Zambia Workers Compensation Control fund (ZWCCf).

Mr Mukuma who was speaking in Kitwe Wednesday after paying a courtesy call on the National Union for Miners and Allied Workers (NUMAW) said Government was satisfied no job losses were recorded during the exercise.

He said only those members of staff were retired as they had remained with about two years to the retirement.

He added that Government launched the restructuring of the Company last year and that it was now complete with the current management and several workers returned.

The Minister noted that the operations and general performance of the company has also improved.

And Mr Mukuma has disclosed that NUMAW has asked Government to help facilitate the signing of the Collective Agreement with Kasanshi Mining Company following the company’s decision to take the matter to court.

He said the Union want the dispute between NUMAW and Kasanshi Mine which was currently in Court to be settled out of court so that a new collective agreement for the workers could be signed.

He said Government, NUMAW and Kasanshi management had met on the need to Sign a new Collective agreement but the two parties did not agree on the Interpretations of certain clauses a move which made Kasanshi to seek Judicial Intervention.

Mr Mukuma said the Union felt that Government should intervene and try to compel Kasanshi to settle the matter out of Court.

He said Government would see how best it could work to try and ensure that the agreement was signed out of Court.

And in another development Mr Mukuma says the twelve workers fired by Konkola Copper Mines Last week (KCM) were wrong because they had gone on an illegal Strike.

He said it was illegal for the workers to have gone on strike without their Union declaring a dispute with the Mining Company and that the Zambian Laws states that any worker that goes on an illegal strike must be fired.

He noted that the Workers had no right to protest over a negotiated increment because their representatives had already accepted the Companies 15% Offer.

Mr Mukuma said the employer may not have the capacity to pay what the workers were demanding for hence the need for them to accept what management had offered.

He said the twelve were dismissed on an issue of indispline and he cautioned Miners to be conversant with the Labour Laws.

And NUMAW President Mudia Sikufele said the union was still pleading with the mining company to ensure that the affected workers were given a fair ruling.

Govt Pays Tribute China and Zambia Relationship

Government says it happy with existing cordial and warm relations that exists between Zambia and China.

Vice President Rupiah Banda said the Zambia-China relations are at their best with China helping Zambia address some its economic and social challenges.

Mr. Banda commended China for its continued contribution to Zambia’s economic development through investment in mining, agriculture and construction.

The Vice President was speaking when a goodwill Chinese delegation paid a courtesy call on him at his office Wednesday.

Mr. Banda noted that government is amused with the cooperation between the two countries particularly with the establishment of economic zones on the copperbelt.

And Head of Delegation Li Jinjun commended Zambia for being one of the first countries in Africa to establish bilateral relations since independence.

Mr. Jinjun who is also Chinese Vice Minister of International Department of the central committee of the communist party said China is happy that its assistance in the establishing economic zones is bearing tangible results.

He said with approximately 200 Chinese in Zambia, China is the third largest investor in the country.

Earlier, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Minister Kabinga Pande who assured the delegation that Zambia will continue to support the one China policy.

Mr. Pande said the relations between the two countries are warm because there is sincerity adding that almost all the support from China has no strings attached.

He noted that the G8 group of countries should seriously consider China as part of the group.

Mr. Pande who is also MMD Vice National Chairman said the MMD looks forward to continued cooperation with the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the quest to develop the two nations.

And Mr. Jinjun said there is need for the MMD and the CPC to strengthen ties through increased high level visits between the two nations.

Mr. Jinjun invited the MMD to send a delegation of mid and high ranking members to China in order to promote exchange of ideas between the two parties which are ruling parties in their respective countries.

In attendance were Chinese Ambassador Li Qiangmin, Officials from the ruling MMD and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Wednesday National Team Update

The Zambia national team is to set up a 10-day training camp in Germany next month.

Faz media liaison officer Erick Mwanza confirmed Zambia’s scheduled European training camp that will start on August 15 and end on the 24th.

Mwanza said Zambia will during their camping period in Germany play two training matches against one yet to be named Bundesliga side and another with a 2.Bundesliga team.

One of the matches against the 2.Bundesliga club will be played on August 20.

He said talks were still on-going with a major Bundesliga side over the second training game.

Zambia will use their Germany training camp to prepare for their final 2010 World/Africa Cup Group 11 qualifier on September 6 at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe.

Zambia coach Herve Renard has named his final 20-man squad for this Sundays Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup quarterfinal clash against Zimbabwe at Secunda in South Africa.

The team includes two returns, prime of which is that of veteran defender Elijah Tana of Nchanga Rangers after he was dropped for the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup final squad in January due to poor form.

Defender Clive Hachilensa too has received a recall for the first time since the Africa Cup finals.

First choice goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene of Free State Stars in South Africa has earned a late recall after he was earlier excused for the Cosafa Cup outing.

Mweene’s inclusion means there is no place for any of the two local goalkeepers, William Chibale of Lusaka Dynamos and Green Buffaloes’ Mike Poto.

Poto and Chibale however, will continue to train with Zambia until the team departs for South Africa this Friday.

As expected, Power Dynamos striker Francis Kombe is in the team and will be hoping to impress Renard in the Frenchman’s 6th international match in charge.

Kombe currently leads the scorers charts on 8 league goals for both City of Lusaka and Power since the start of the season in March.

Meanwhile, Renard has also given a senior debut to two Under-20 players with most prominent being Zanaco midfielder Henry Banda.

Banda has struggled to find rhythm at Zanaco where he has played less than 10 matches all from the bench since joining from Kabwe Warriors this season.

The midfielder exploded onto the scene at warriors last year with one Emmanuel Mayuka who is also in the team and both had good Cosafa Youth Cup outings last year despite the Under-20 teams 1st round exit from the tournament also held in Mpumalanga.

However, Banda’s two impressive displays with the Under-20 team the sides Rwanda 2009 Africa Youth Cup 1st round qualifiers against Mauritius were enough to convince Renard of the teenagers potential.

City of Lusaka midfielder Morgan Kaoma is the other Under-20 player handed a debut senior call-up.

Young Arrows defender White Simwanza of Young Arrows returns since scoring an own-goal away in a 1-0 loss against Botswana on May 2 in an Ivory Coast 2009 Africa Nations Championship 1st round qualifier.

Zesco urged to adopt new strategy

Acting Northern province Permanent Secretary, Gabriel Kaunda, has asked the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation, ZESCO, to consider upgrading Chishimba and Luzuwa Hydro-Electric power
stations in Kasama and Mbala district.

Mr Kaunda is of the view that expanding the two hydroelectric power stations could help address the intermittent power supply in the province.

Mr Kaunda made the call in Kasama during the opening of the Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) meeting being held at the Pastoral Centre.

Mr Kaunda said the province was concerned with the intermittent power supply as it was impacting negatively on the development prospects of the area.

He observed that the two hydro power stations had the potential to generate up to 50megawatts of electricity which was more that the province’s requirement.

Chgishimba and Luzuwa hydro power station are currently generating below five (5) mega watts of electricity.

Mr Kaunda also said there was need for ZESCO to spread the risk of investment in hydro power generation by investing in other provinces.

He said there has been a lot of concern with the current investment pattern which has since created massive investment in one river basin.

Mr Kaunda observed that in an event of climate change, the nation stands to lose a lot unlike if the investment was spread to other areas.

Northern Province has a lot of potential for hydro power generation which still remains untapped.

ZNAN pumps US$28m into HIV/AIDS fight

The Zambia National AIDS Network (ZNAN) has started implementing phase two of the Anti-Retro Treatment (ART) programme worth US$28 million under the auspices of the global fund.

And the Zambia National AIDS Network has flagged-off a nationwide distribution of bicycles worth K1.2 billion to ART implementing partners.

Speaking shortly after he handed-over the 3, 994 bicycles to ART implementing partners, ZNAN Grants Manager Banabas Chiboboka said the US$28 million global fund would play a pivotal role in the fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country.

Mr. Chiboboka further said the US$28 million global fund will help in scaling up the fight against HIV/AIDS as it will target key areas that would include prevention, care and support services to the affected people.

He urged organisations dealing with HIV/AIDS programmes to apply for the funds saying there is need to scale-up the fight against HIV/AIDS through prevention, care and support.

He said there is need to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic which he said has continued to rob the nation with the most skilled human resource.

He said the handing-over of bicycles to ART implementing partners has again marked an important milestone in the country’s national crusade of fighting the further spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Mr. Chiboboka noted that the donated bicycles to implementing partners will be used in community HIV/AIDS outreach activities.

The ART implementing partners that have benefited from the 3, 994 bicycles include the Development AID from People to People (DAPP), International AIDS Alliance, SAFAIDS, KARA Counseling, Africare, CHEP, ZATULET and FHT.

Giving a vote of thanks, DAPP Programmes Manager Amos Lwando commended ZNAN for its continued role in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the country.

Mr. Lwando said the donated bicycles to implementing partners will go a long way in enhancing mobility during HIV/AIDS sensitization activities as well as the provision of care and support to the HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons.

He further disclosed that his organisations has received about K7 billion from ZNAN from the time it started partnering with ZNAN.

Nakonde girl develops male genitals

A Grade Nine pupil at a named school in Nakonde district in Northern province yesterday woke up to a rude shock, when she discovered her private parts had changed into male genitals.

Both MMD Mulalo Ward Councilor, Luka Simusamba, and the girl confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS in Nakonde today.

Mr Simusamba said the girl of Ntantumbila village in Mulalo Ward discovered yesterday morning during bathing that her genitals had changed into male organs.

Mr Simusamba explained that the girl was then rushed to a traditional healer for possible treatment after her parents and the village headman were informed about the development.

He said people of Ntantumbila and surrounding areas have received the news with great shock and suspect the development to be an act of evil spirits.

Some elderly people talked to in the area said such occurrences were common especially among people who indulge in sexual relations with married people.

By press time, the condition of the girl, who denied any involvement in sexual activities with married men, had remained the same.

SA company mining in Luapula

Alfa and Crux Mining Group of South Africa have supplied mining equipment worth over US$2 million to Kampelembe Manganese Mine of Mansa.

Alfa and Crux Mine Engineer and Quality Controller, Gerhard Weltsz, said the equipment would enable Kampelembe mine to raise its manganese production to over 1500 tones from one tone per day.

Alfa Mine had secured mining rights on a land area covering over 1.2 million acres in Luapula province.

The company has however sub-contracted twelve local small scale mining firms in Luapula to mine and the minerals on their behalf.

To improve the efficiency of mining amongst the local small scale sub-contracted miners, Alfa and Crux Mining Group started supplying them with the state of the art mining equipment.

During the hand over of mining equipment and commissioning of operations at Kampelembe Manganese Mine Luapula Province, Acting Permanent Secretary Clement Siame, said there was need to invest in the mining industry and exploit the untapped mineral resources in the area.

Mr. Siame said increasing investment in the mining sector in Luapula province would alleviate poverty amongst the people in the area.

Mr. Siame said government was in a hurry to open up Luapula province to more economic developments through the exploitation of its natural resources.

He said once fully exploited, the minerals would provide employment to many people, which would lead to sustainable development in the province.

“Luapula province has huge copper, manganese, cobalt, iron ore and many other mineral deposits that are unexploited. We are calling upon investors to invest in mining here to help alleviate poverty amongst the people,” Mr. Siame said.

Fundanga urges people get organised to access loans

Bank of Zambia Governor, Caleb Fundanga, has advised people in Solwezi to obtain title deeds for their land which could serve as collateral for access to loans from financial institutions.

Dr Fundanga said people, who do not own land could form cooperatives so that they could get loans as a well registered cooperative.

Dr Fundanga said this when he paid a courtesy call on North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nkolola Hazemba, in Solwezi today.

He said there is need to sensitize the people in rural areas on the benefits of belonging to community based organizations such as cooperatives that would assist them access bank loans when they can not afford collateral as individuals.

Dr Fundanga was responding to Mr Hazemba’s request for the Central Bank to make the lending Policy liberal to enable small scale businesses and farmers access loans from bank.

Mr Hazemba said while government is happy that many people are able to access loans form banks, there was still a big challenge for most people mostly those in informal employment to get loans because they can not meet the collateral requirements.

Meanwhile, Dr Fundanga has commended Lumwana Mining Company for employing local contractors in the construction process of the mine.

He has advised those that may not be directly benefiting from the mine in terms of employment to venture into various business activities such as agriculture in order to indirectly benefit from the mine through supply of farm produce.

Masebo gives Maketeers 24 hour ultimatum

Local Government and Housing Minister Sylvia Masebo has issued a 24 hour ultimatum to Marketeers trading at Potters Cooperative Market in Livingstone’s Nottie Broadie area to vacate.

Ms Masebo said the marketeers need to vacate the premises within 24 hours or face the wrath of the police.

Ms Masebo who was accompanied by Southern Province Minister Daniel Munkombwe was speaking in Livingstone on Tuesday when she made an on the spot check at the area that marketeers have illegally turned into a market in Nottie Broadie.

She maintained that the place where the marketeers were trading from was not a market and that it could not be turned into a market because it was earmarked for something else according to the council Livingstone City Council development plan.

Ms Masebo noted that there was no way marketeers could wake up and decide to allocate a trading place to themselves without the approval of her ministry.

She said if everybody was allowed to turn any place into whatever suited them, that would bring chaos in the country hence the need to follow the laws.

She told the Vice-Chairman at Potters market Samuel Mwaba that he should correctly advise his people to move or they risked loosing their merchandise when the police move in.

Ms Masebo assured the marketeers that she would give the Livingstone City Council extra resources to ensure that Libuyu Tandabale market that has been designated as a new trading site is turned into a habitable place.

” I will give the Livingstone City Council extra resources to turn that market into a habitable place. What is important is that I want laws to be followed. If you say that where the market is there are not toilets, I will give you money.

”Im not for cheap voting now. You will not do anything at will because you are voters. If we dont respect the laws we make, there will be no order in the country,” she said.

Earlier, Potters’s market vice-chairperson Samuel Mwaba pleaded with the Minister to rescind her decision because the bridge in Libuyu was impassable during the rainy season.

He also noted that the marketeers paid K50 million to the owner of the land that they have turned into a market.

Mr Mwaba maintained that the area in Libuyu was not suitable for trading adding that it was also too small to accommodate all marketeers.

But Libuyu Tandabale Market chairman Joseph Kanyanga said the market was not too small and accused the marketeers who have insisted on trading at Potters market of being against the government.

Mr Kanyanga charged that the people who had refused to move to the new Tandabale market were bent on bringing confusion.

The Marketeers were early this year moved from Maramba’s Tandabale market to pave way for the construction of over 60 housing units for police officers.

They were later allocated a new market in Libuyu since the land they were occupying in Libuyu belonged to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Govt happy with industrial harmony on the CB

Government says it is happy with the industrial harmony obtaining on the Copperbelt.

Labour minister Mr. Ronald Mukuma has expressed happiness saying this was due to the political leadership in the province.

He said this Tuesday morning when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt deputy minister Mr. Mwansa Mbulakulima.

He also urged University of Zambia lecturers and the Ministry of Education to find a better way of restoring harmony between themselves in sorting out the go slow by the lecturers at the highest learning institution in the land.

He said he was hopeful that a lasting solution will soon be found to the impasse and that would be in the interest of all Zambians.

The minister is on the Copperbelt to check on the progress that has been made since he launched a restructuring exercise of the Board at the Workers Compensation Fund ( WCF) last year.

According to the letter circulated by Workers compensation Fund public relations manager Mr. Mark Nkolomba, the minister had come to acquaint himself with the several changes that had taken place since.

MMD not in crisis – Mabenga

Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) National Chairman, Michael Mabenga has reiterated that there is no leadership crisis in the party.

Mr. Mabenga said all the party organs have continued to work together and are praying for the quick recovery of President Mwanawasa.

The MMD National Chairman was speaking at the party secretariate during at a press briefing in Lusaka on Tuesday.

He said people spreading rumors that there is crisis in the MMD should scrap the notion as the party’s operations are normal.

“I want to agree with what the Vice President said in Livingstone yesterday. There is no crisis in MMD. If anything the party has become even stronger as we have united in praying for the quick recovery of our President,” Mr. Mabenga said.

And Mr Mabenga says NEC will soon hold meeting to discuss and resolve amicably the disputes between the National Secretary, Mr Katele Kalumba and Chairman for information and Publicity, Ben Tetamashima in order to avoid bickering in the party..

And Chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti has dismissed rumours that before his departure for Egypt, President Levy Mwanawasa left the instruments of power with defence minister George Mpombo.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Information Minister, says Vice President Rupiah Banda is fully in charge of all government functions.

He says Mr. Banda is receiving support from all line ministries in implementing various government programmes.

Mr. Mulongoti was speaking during a live National watch programme on ZNBC TV Monday night.

He assured the nation that cabinet will continue implementing various government programmes despite the Zambian leader’s absence.

Herve Hands William Njobvu Cosafa Cup Call-up

William Njobvu has been handed a chance to prove his worth by Herve Renard after earning a late call-up to the Frenchman’s provisional Cosafa Senior Challenge Cup squad.

The talented Lusaka Dynamos midfielder trained with the team on the eve of Renard unveiling his finally 20-man team for Sundays Cosafa Cup quarterfinal match against Zimbabwe at Secunda in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

He has not been picked in Renard’s five previous games in charge due to injury and finally gets a chance to try and win a place in the Zambia set-up under the French-born trainer.

Njobvu is one of two Dynamos players called-up for training camp together with defender Hichani Himoonde.

Himoonde returns to the fold for a third time and still in search of making his first final selection line-up under Renard since the Frenchman took charge of Zambia in mid-May.

The Dynamos duo played prominently for Zambia in the team’s early stage Ivory Coast 2009 Africa Nations Championship qualifiers against Swaziland and Botswana.

Njobvu and Himoonde join other late recalls that include Zanaco striker Roger Kola and his club mate Henry Banda plus the City of Lusaka duo of defender Morgan Kaoma and midfielder Lee Ngoma.

Meanwhile, Renard will name the traveling 20-man Cosafa Cup team on Wednesday.

The team will fly out to South Africa on Friday July 25 for Johannesburg before taking the four-hour long road haul to Mpumalanga.
