Winless Chipolopolo In Last Throw of The Dice As Tour Ends

1

Chipolopolo will make one final push to end their so far unimpressive June friendly tour on a high note when they face Sudan tonight in their final date.

Zambia heads into their last friendly this evening against Sudan at Omdurman still winless after three games played.

Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s has over the last fortnight of the June tour presided over two defeats and one draw with the recurring theme being the opposition scoring first in all those matches.

“Looking towards Sunday’s game with great hope that we shall accomplish our mission in the best possible way,” Micho said.

Zambia lost 3-1 to Senegal on June 5 in Thies, then drew 2-2 with Benin on June 8 in Cotonou and were beaten 3-2 by Sudan on June 11 at Omdurman.

“We are going now to recover and come out on Sunday to give everything on the field of play so that we complete this June in the best possible way,” Micho said.

Meanwhile, Zanaco striker Moses Phiri has been ruled out of the game after sustaining a calf injury in Friday’s loss to Sudan.

Otherwise Zambia been declared Covid-19 free and with just minor knocks that saw some players excused from practice as a precautionary measure but they should make the team for tonight’s game.

120 000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine expected in August

8

An additional 120,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine is expected to arrive in the country in August this year from the COVAX facility.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Kennedy Malama said the doses are in addition to the 108, 000 expected on June 21, 2021.

Dr. Malama announced the development in Lusaka yesterday during a routine COVID -19 update.

“On a brighter note, we have received further communication from the COVAX facility that an additional 120,000 doses have been allocated to Zambia and is expected in August this year. This is in addition to the 108,000 expected on 21 June 2021,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary said in an effort to ensure quality service, 3 of the testing laboratories including the UTH Virology, UTH pediatrics Centre of Excellence and Arthur Davison Children’s Hospital participated in the African Society for Laboratory Medicine facilitated testing certification program.

Dr. Malama was pleased to report that all the laboratories passed and have been accorded a 5-star status valid for 12 months.

And the Permanent Secretary announced that given the current COVID- 19 situation in the country, outpatient clinics in tertiary and general hospitals have been suspended.

He explained that the move is to allow appropriate deployment of staff amidst increasing cases and also to decongest the hospitals.

“Provincial Health Directors and Medical Superintendents are directed to closely work with the local leadership and stakeholders to communicate and implement this directive accordingly informed by local situation,” he stated.

Dr. Malama added, “Further to reduce congestion in health facilities, we have restricted visitations to health institutions countrywide. As we all know, hospitals are a source of infection but similarly, visitors can bring infections into the health facilities.”

Meanwhile, Zambia has in the last 24 hours recorded 2,358 new confirmed cases out of 12,064 tests conducted bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases recorded to date to 110,332.

Dr. Malama says the breakdown of the new cases by province shows that Central Province recorded 219, Copperbelt 192, Eastern 301, Luapula 68, Lusaka 1,081, Muchinga 41, Northern 35, North-western 24, Southern 193 and Western 204 respectively.

And Dr. Malama announced that the country further recorded 17 new deaths in the last 24 hours.

“On a very sad note, we recorded 17 new deaths in the last 24 hours. This depicts daily mortality above 15 for 3 consecutive days this week. Of the Lusaka deaths, five were reported from our isolation and treatment facilities in high density sub-districts, namely Chilenje, Chipata, George and Matero in Lusaka,” he said.

Dr. Malama indicated that the new deaths have been classified as 12 COVID-19 deaths and five COVID-19 associated deaths bringing the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths recorded to date to 1,365 classified as 774 COVID deaths and 591 COVID-19 associated deaths.

The Permanent Secretary added a total of 972 discharges were made from both the COVID-19 isolation facilities and home management, which brings the cumulative number of recoveries to 96,646 (88% recovered).

“There are currently 12,321 active cases, of whom 11,781 are under community management and 540 are admitted to our COVID-19 isolation facilities. Among those currently under admission, 366 are on oxygen therapy and 49 are in critical condition,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Dr. Malama noted that 174 new admissions were recorded countrywide in the last 24 hours which is the highest number of new admissions ever recorded.

“All our provinces now have a test positivity rate of over 5%, indicating that community transmission has unprecedentedly increased. Today we see a real risk of overwhelming our health care system at the rate we are receiving patients in our health facilities,” stressed the Permanent Secretary.

Dr. Malama said the situation calls for everyone to show solidarity and save the country and reiterate the appeal to political leaders to reflect on political activities and stem the transmission of the infection.

And North-Western province Civil Servants Task Force Chairperson, Pias Kamasanyi said civil servants are aware that explaining government polices is not political but is in line with the public service guidelines.

“Our position is not political but in line with public service guidelines and etiquette which compel us to support the government of the day,” Mr Kamasanyi said.

Meanwhile Mr. Kamasanyi appealed to government to cancel civil servant loans from lending institutions as well confirm those in acting positions.

Over 500 ex-miners given farm land in North-western

11

Over 500 ex miners in North-Western province have thanked government for empowering them with farm land.

Provincial Chairperson Jonathan Banda confirmed that all the ex-miners have received their farm plots within the province.

Mr Banda said the gesture by government is evidence that government does not want any of its citizen to become a destitute after losing employment.

Mr Banda was speaking in Solwezi today during a meeting with Vice President Inonge Wina.

“We are grateful to government for giving us over 500 farm plots in Northwestern province. Let me inform you your honour, that we have about 1,500 ex miners and we are hopeful that everyone will get their land,” Mr Banda said.

He further appealed to government to expedite the process of issuing title deeds and also work on the road network, water and power connectivity.

“We have already formed cooperatives and therefore, we are appealing to government to expedite the issuance of title deeds for the land we have been given.

“We are also appealing to be helped with farming equipment, inputs, good road network, power and water,” Mr Banda said.

Mr Banda also pledged on behalf of ex miners to support government as it means well for them.

And Mrs Wina assured the ex-miners that government is on course in ensuring that every Zambian who owns land has a title deed as proof of ownership.

She commended the ex-miners for engaging themselves in agriculture as a way of creating a livelihood and wealth for themselves.

“Let me commend you for engaging in agriculture as this is the right trajectory that will help you create wealth for yourselves and your families,” Mrs Wina said.

Meanwhile Patriotic Front vice president, Nkandu Luo advised the ex-miners not to sell the land but utilize it for their betterment.

Prof. Luo advised the ex-miners to engage in livestock and aquaculture activities adding that the country’s economy can only recover when every citizen become productive.

“Let me encourage you to use the comparative advantage that you have as ex-miners, form cooperatives and engage in livestock and aquaculture activities,” she said.

Zambia Women Writers Association bemoans poor culture of reading

3

Zambia Women Writers Association (ZWWA) have called for the restocking of public libraries with the latest books to rekindle the dwindling culture of reading among the children.

Association National Treasure Lucille Mudenda called for investment in the restocking of libraries with the latest books as most books are outdated and irrelevant to the current situation.

Ms Mudenda was speaking when she handed over books to the Lusaka City Council Chilenje library by United Africa Bank (UBA) working together with the vulnerable Children Advocacy Project (VAP).

She said council libraries are an important asset in academics but have been neglected.

“We have to move with time and we need online libraries to compete with countries which are already using such facilities,” Ms Mudenda said.

She said it is unacceptable for Chilenge library which was officially opened 46 years ago to continue having the same books which were placed in the library in 1975 including furniture.

Ms Mudenda observed that the culture of reading has gone down because parents don’t read and children imitate what they do.

“Libraries have been neglected for a long time yet they are important in people’s education life,” he said

And Ministry of General Education Assistant Director Robinson Bwato noted that if there is nothing interesting to read in the library people cannot read.

Mr Bwato said the ministry is overwhelmed with people who have interest to read but there are no reading materials in public libraries.

“We are a talking culture rather than reading, and reading is alien to Africa but we must have proper books to rekindle it,” he said.

Meanwhile, United Bank of Africa (UBA) Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager, Wezi Njovu said the organization was delighted to assist in restocking Chilenje Library with African Literature books that will benefit school children.

“Our children no longer read, their passion for reading informative and educative books is fast eroding, they are distracted by the presence of electronic social media such as Facebook, Instagram and others,” she said.

And Lusaka Province Deputy Permanent Secretary Pascalina Musokotwane thanked the United Bank of Africa for initiating the programme of restocking the Council libraries with books in Chilenje, Ndola and Kitwe.

Ms Musokotwane appealed to other business houses to emulate the UBA bank and assist public libraries.

North-western clergy not benefited from the COVID-19 empowerment fund

2

Vice President Inonge Wina is disappointed that no church in North-Western province has accessed the COVID-19 church empowerment fund.

Ms Wina said government is aware of the economic hardships brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and that the church has not been spared.

She said this is why the fund was created to help the church sail through the challenges.

“I am disappointed to learn that no church in North-Western province has benefitted from the empowerment fund. I will follow up the matter with the relevant ministry, the ministry of national guidance and religious affairs,” Ms Wina said.

ZANIS reports that the Vice President was reacting to concerns raised by the clergy during a meeting in Solwezi yesterday.

Mrs Wina said government continues to attach importance to the church because it is significant in promoting values that will foster Christian values, peace, stability and socio economic development.

Speaking at the same meeting, Solwezi Pastors Fellowship Chairperson Miselo Musonda said the church in Solwezi is saddened by acts of violence that have characterised the campaigns ahead of the August 12 general elections.

“Your honour the Vice President, the church in Solwezi is saddened by the behaviour of political parties in Zambia which has created untold violence, name calling and lack of respect for Ubuntu, and this has been exhibited by both the ruling and opposition parties,” Rev. Musonda said.

Rev. Musonda called on political players to exhibit maximum tolerance and restrain towards one another and create a conducive environment for peaceful elections.

“We call upon government, political players, police and everyone to rise to the challenge and create a platform that will ensure that campaigns and voting take place in a peaceful environment,” Rev. Musonda said.

Rev. Musonda appealed for support towards the establishment of a K1.6 million farm project which on a 250 hectares piece of land in chief Mulonga’s area in Mushindamo district.

He explained that the project is expected to help the retired clergy, aged and vulnerable people and also create job opportunities.

And Patriotic Front running mate Nkandu Luo called on the church to use the pulpit to denounce violence and all those using young people as tools of violence.

Prof. Luo said there is need for the clergy to remind young people on the importance of upholding peace because a country without peace cannot develop.

Numbers don’t lie:Prices have escalated without a corresponding increase in incomes

25

By Nkonkomalimba Kafunda.

Now that the legal issues over President Edgar Lungu’s eligibility to contest the next elections have been exhausted and settled, it is now time to focus on the job at hand and concentrate on availing Zambian voters with the information, the truth required for them to make informed decisions as they cast their ballots on August 12.

What constitutes truth, in this case, depends on what side of the political divide you belong to. Unfortunately, this divide is largely determined by the availability of bread and who is doing the buttering, and in what quantities.

Clearly, those with government contracts which they would not have in a meritocracy are overly desirous that the status quo is maintained. The enforcement of the rule of law fairly and equitably will take them back to the poverty they have managed to run away from using corruption, thievery, skullduggery, and all other means available to them.

That’s not all. Possibilities of being involuntary guests of the state for uncomfortably long periods of time are causing sleepless nights, what with the momentum the main opposition has come with.

On the other side of the divide are those who cannot afford bread and by extension do not need butter as that is an unnecessary condiment if Kandolo is your staple. This long-suffering majority are only asking for equitable, transparent, competent government made up of selfless men and women of integrity. While achieving utopia is an implausibility, this dystopia of excess and exuberance on hand and poverty and pauperism on the other can be mitigated.

Infrastructure projects using borrowed resources have had an adversely negative effect on the lives of Zambians as debt repayment has been taking up larger and larger chunks of our budget limiting the money supply in circulation. further reducing the amounts available to the people for life’s basic necessities and forcing the government to reduce budgetary allocation to sectors such as education, health, and social protection.

Prices have escalated without a corresponding increase in incomes causing yet more havoc in homes reducing frequency of meals for most families, generally making life a mere existence, a perpetual series of struggles against never-ending ever-increasing turmoil.

Should PF continue? Here are price adjustments and performance indicators in the first five years Mr. Lungu’s presidency. I have deliberately used pre Covid data so that the pandemic is not used as a scapegoat

  1. Petrol: January 2015, K7.60 January 2020, K17.80 134% increase
  2. US Dollar: January 2015 K6.45 January 2020 K15. 00 133% depreciation
  3. Mealie Meal: Zanuary 2015 K68 January 2020 K170 135% increase
  4. External National Debt:January 2015 $4.7 Billion January 2020 $11.2 B 138% increase
  5. Inflation: January 2015 7.81% January 2020 13.9% 80% increase

However, there is hope. The election result trajectory since 2011 is cause for opportunism.

In 2011 UPND Alliance leader Hakainde Hichilema had 506,763 votes representing 18.54% of the vote. In 2015 Mr. Hichilema had 780,168 or 47.16% against Mr. lungu’s 807,925 or 48.84%. In 2016 He had 1,760,347 or 47.63% while President Lungu got 1,860,877 or 50.35%.

Now with the inroads made in previous PF strongholds suffering from the same pangs of hunger as the rest of the country the election, if held under free and fair conditions is set to be a landslide victory of epic in fact Mammoth proportions for the Alliance. The PF has been emboldened by people especially chiefs and some members of the clergy, receiving their gifts of money, food, alcohol; and clothing as they campaign but this as they should well know, is their own ‘don’t kubeba’ working in reverse. They should always keep in mind as the heartily disburse these goodies to grinning multitudes that behind every smile there are teeth.

PF calls on Zambia Police to Arrest arrest and charge the UPND marshals for destruction of property

21

The Patriotic Front(PF) has called on the Zambia Police to arrest Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres that damaged property and caused widespread injuries to PF members and members of the public.

Secretary-General Davies Mwila stated that before approval for a public procession is granted, marshalls sign guarantees that such a procession will be peaceful and without violence and disturbances.

Mr. Mwila has called on the Police to arrest and charge the UPND Marshalls and hold them accountable for the destruction of public property and injuries.

He said the Public Order Act provides for marshalls to be accountable to the public processions that is conducted.

Mr. Mwila praised the PF members in Lusaka for acting with utmost restraint and refusing to retaliate against the UPND.

He said the party was scaling up its political activities that will include roadshows and door-to-door but will be Covid-19 compliant.

Meanwhile, an organization calling itself Smart Youths Against Political Violence (SYAPV) has expressed worry at the widespread political violence ahead of the August general elections.

SYAPV president Thomas Kamawe has observed that the levels of violence being perpetrated by some political parties is not just inhuman, but has the potential to cause serious unrest in the country.

Mr. Kamawe in a statement issued to Smart Eagles, notes that what is worrisome is that youths who should be patriotic, are the ones being used as tools for political violence.
“As an Association,we feel strongly that it is important to address all these political confrontations in a peaceful manner by promoting co-existence amongst all political players,” he said.

And Mr. Kamawe has challenged opposition leader, Hakainde Hichilema to condemn spates of violence been perpetrated by his carders.

He has observed that President Edgar Lungu has openly denounced violence by all means, both publicly and privately, while nothing has come from the opposition leader.

“One would wonder why other political party leaders like HH and the UPND have failed to publicly denounce violence perpetrated by their followers. Ignoring such may simply allow speculations that some party leaders have given blessings to political violence” Mr. Kamawe observed.

He said any life is important, hence the need to protect and preserve it even during campaigns, during and after elections.

“We have seen videos of properties being burnt by suspected UPND political cadres clad in the party’s regalia which requires full investigations in order to bring those perpetrators to justice” Mr Kamawe demanded.

“Our appeal is for the church to come on board and give guidance to some political leaders whose intentions are not for peacebuilding but hate and love of violence,” he said, adding that violence has no place in Zambia.

Mr. Kamawe said power is on the ballot as opposed to using youths as tools of political violence.

Red Arrows Keep CAF Dreams Alive

0

Red Arrows on Saturday jumped to number three on the FAZ Super League log to keep their continental qualifying dreams alive.

The 2004 league champions beat relegation battling Lumwana Radiants 2-1 away in Solwezi.

Arrows are chasing their first continental qualification since 2012 when they made a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary stage exit.

All three goals came in the second half and Saddam Phiri put Arrows ahead in the 54th minute.

But Lumwana leveled through a Chewe Mukuka own goal in the 77th minute.

It took a stoppage time goal from Joseph Phiri to see Arrows win the game to jump three places from sixth to third.

Arrows have displaced Lusaka Dynamos to number four on 49 and 47 points respectively with two matches left to play.

Lumwana stay second from bottom on 33 points, three points behind Napsa Stars and a further four adrift of Nkana and Indeni who are tied on 37 points.

Nkana Tumble At Young Green Eagles’s Fortress

0

Young Green Eagles beat Nkana 3-2 to end the outgoing FAZ Super League champions three-match winning run and also dented their relegation battle.

The defeat sees Nkana still stuck at the top half of the bottom four demotion zone.

But there was no shortage of drama at Kosa Stadium in Kafue in this five-goal thriller in which Young Eagles went two-nil into the break after punishing Nkana for some awful defending.

Damiano Kola found space between Richard Ocran and Moses Nyondo to head in the first goal in the 36th minute.

Saviour Nkonkola then outpaced Nyondo the entire length of Nkana’s own half after a poor offside trap near the centerline to beat goalkeeper Kelvin Malunga.

It took the last three minutes of the second half for Nkana to mount a comeback when Ronald Kampamba headed in the ball in the 87th minute from an Ackim Mumba corner.

Nyondo redeemed himself in stoppage time with a header from another set-piece to equalize for Nkana.

However, Isaac Phiri had the last say for Young Eagles when he too outpaced Nyondo before beating Malunga to see the hosts stay unbeaten at home for an eleventh straight match where they have now won nine times.

Nkana stay put on 37 points with three games left while Young Eagles jump from 14th to 10th to the safety threshold of 42 points.

Charity Katanga warns UPND for blocking the Vice President Motorcade

26

Deputy Inspector General of Police in -charge of Operations, Charity Katanga has described an attempt by United Party for National Development (UPND) to block Vice President Mrs. Inonge Wina and her entourage as unfortunate and should not happen again.

Mrs. Katanga has warned political parties in the country to desist from provoking police officers.

She was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe.

Mrs Katanga emphasized that the Public Order Act has not been suspended and expected all political parties to observe the law in their conduct.

Mrs Katanga has since directed police officers in the country to engage representatives of all political parties to ensure that road shows campaigns are coordinated and traffic rules are observed.

“Political parties must observe traffic rules and accommodate other road users. We have continued to strategies and review how best campaigns using roadshows can be conducted in an orderly manner,” she said.

“What happened in Ndola where the Vice President’s motorcade had to be diverted because UPND members had blocked access to the road is unfortunate and should not happen again,” she said.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe confirmed that the province has registered some political disturbances in the past week.

Mr Nundwe said the police are being provoked with impunity despite working under difficult circumstances.

Mr Nundwe advised politicians coming into the province to campaign to not bring confusion but talk about development.

He emphasized that in the absence of peace the country cannot continue on its developmental agenda.

And speaking earlier when she addressed senior officers at Kitwe central drill hall, Mrs Katanga urged police officers in the province to execute duties with diligence and instill public confidence that security is assured during poll day.

Mrs Katanga expected police officers not get involved in politics as it will prove difficult to execute duties.

“Police is there to ensure that there is public order in the country,” she said.

Mrs Katanga is on the Copperbelt Province to carry out operations in Chingola district where reports of hacking people have been recorded as well as Ndola district where pockets of political violence have been reported resulting in one death.

Zambia commemorates World Day against Child Labour

4

Zambia today joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Day against Child Labour.

Officiating at the Commemoration, Ministry of Labour and Social Security Permanent Secretary Chanda Kaziya says ending and eradicating Child Labour, is among government priorities.

Mr Kaziya noted that child labour perpetuates intergenerational poverty, threatens national economies and undercuts rights guaranteed by the convention on the rights of children.

He said government intends to provide broadened resource mobilisation to deal with child labour in the country.

“Government is working towards ensuring improved quality of education for all our children. Our government’s commitment is also evident through the approval of appropriate policies and action plans aimed at broadly at eliminating hazardous child labour and improve the safety and health of young workers,” he explained.

He also called for increased consultations for validation of data on child labour to ensure programs on child labour involve children.

“There is nothing for the children without involving the children in the quest to end child labour,” Mr Kaziya urged.

Also present at the commemorations was Labour Commissioner Givens Muntengwa, who disclosed that the ministry has recorded positive results through initiatives aimed at ending child labour.

He stated that with the help of stakeholders, the ministry has managed to direct child labour policy and implemented programmes that are targeted at ending child labour.

“The Ministry has made considerable progress in the fight against Child Labour through policy direction and implementation of child labour Programmes with various stakeholders,” he said.

And speaking at the same event, International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Director George Akutho called for sustainable solutions, to end all forms of Child Labour.

Dr. Akutho called for actions towards the escalating numbers of children in Labour, which has risen to 92 million in Africa.

“The implementation of comprehensive and holistic policies through sustainability solutions is required, in the fight against Child Labour. In Africa the number has risen to 92 million, meaning that one out of every 5 children on the continent is in Child Labour,” he bemoaned.

Dr. Akutho also commended government for putting in place interventions aimed at the elimination of child labour.

He however implored that the crisis of child labour in its current form, requires doubled action to meet the benchmark to eradicate the vice by 2025.

According to global estimates, the number of children in child labour has risen by 8.4 million, to over 100 million children in child labour.

President Lungu says he is confident of getting over 60% of the votes this year

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has said that come 12th August 2021 he will not only exceed the required 50 percent plus one but will safely get 60 percent of the Zambian vote because Zambians have chosen to continue with his government which has shown positive development.

Speaking when he featured on a radio programme in Chipata, President Lungu said he has carried on a mantle of good leadership and all the corners of Zambia have applauded him.

Citing various infrastructure development that have turned the face of Zambia and made services of education, health, housing, transport and so on by not only making services available but of quality, President Lungu said in all his travels across the country, the request is for a continued leadership.

“We first embarked on infrastructure development and we did just that and now we are working on rebuilding the economy,” he said.

President Lungu cited various mechanisms that the Patriotic Front was putting in place to rebuild the economy and noted that his government which is a tried and tested government would also deliver on this promise.

He also observed that some opposition political leaders exhibit very violent characteristics that have made them very unattractive to Zambians.

“Moreover, Zambians want peace imagine I am the only one and a few others talking about peace, talking about not wanting violence in these campaigns. Yesterday, I saw some disturbing pictures on social media that were very annoying breaking vehicles, beating people in full view of even one opposition leader and I know Zambians cannot vote for such a guy, Zambians love peace,” he said.

“There is nothing for him here, so the truth of the matter is that we are winning and I have no doubt about that in my mind,” he said.

And on a very pomp note President Lungu said, “When I first came in 2015 we won by 27 000 votes and 2016 we got 100 000 plus votes, this time 2021 we are getting 60 percent votes plus… it won’t be 50 percent plus it will be 60 percent plus and if they want a recount they will even find that it was 70 plus.” he laughed off.

Our Opponents Ran a Propaganda War Against President Edgar Lungu and Lost -Davies Mwila

17

THE ruling Patriotic Front (PF) has said that enemies of progress have been wanting to disadvantage President Edgar Lungu by bringing up eligibility claims because of their fear of the candidature of the PF leader.

Speaking during a media briefing at the PF Secretariat yesterday, PF Secretary General Davies Mwila expressed happiness at the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the party’s candidate Edgar Chagwa Lungu is eligible to contest this year’s election stating that justice has prevailed.

Mr. Mwila said that the Constitutional Court’s decision is a victory for Zambia, the Rule of Law and for the Patriotic Front party.

“For years, our opponents have run a propaganda war against President Edgar Lungu alleging that the president was seeking an illegal term of office when not,” he added.

“They have spent millions upon millions trying to misinform and mislead our people that President Edgar Lungu was looking for a third term when they knew so well that the President was seeking his second term.”

He said the Constitutional Court is the Court of final appeal and has buried the case once and for all.

“Even when the constitutional court made it very clear in the Judgement of the Danny Pule and Bampi Kapalasa cases that President Lungu was elegible to contest the 2021 presidential elections, our opponents still went ahead to abuse and misuse the court’s time and resources to push a case that had already been settled at law all because of their fear of the candidature of President Edgar Lungu,” Mr Mwila said.

Mr Mwila has since encouraged party supporters and sympathisers to go flat out and campaign for the president and the party as Victory is certain.

The Constitutional Court this yesterday dismissed the case in which the eligibility of President Edgar Lungu to contest in the 2021 General Elections was being questioned.

This is a matter in which the Legal Resource Foundation, Mr. Sishuwa Sishuwa and Ms. Linda Kasonde’s Chapter One Foundation, argued that President Lungu was not eligible to stand.

In the judgment, the Constitutional Court stated, inter alia, that: “We hold that Article 106 (3), when read with Article 106 (6) of the Constitution, does not bar the 1st Respondent (President Edgar Chagwa Lungu) from contesting the forthcoming presidential election scheduled for 12th August, 2021. For that reason, we hold that the 1st Respondent’s nomination which was accepted by the Returning Officer on 17th May, 2021 is valid and that the 1st Respondent, Mr. Edgar Changwa Lungu, is entitled to stand for election as President on 12th August, 2021.”

Ministry of Home Affairs warns political parties daring Zambia Police

Government is saddened by increasing reports of political Violence and intolerance, as political players canvass for votes in the forthcoming general elections.

Ministry of Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Masiye Banda says the country has witnessed the worst form of political violence, in several cases reported around the country.

In a statement released to ZANIS, Mr Banda warned of stern action against political parties involved in violent acts.

“As permanent secretary of the ministry of home affairs, I wish to sternly warn the political parties that have shown a firm belief in political violence that acts intended to destabilize the peace of this great nation shall not be tolerated,” he warned.

Mr Banda also said that there is an opposition political party that conducts violence and dares police to act so that it can claim shrinkage of the political space in the country.
