UPND Secretary General Urges Keembe To Vote For Brains Not Tribe

United party For National Development (UPND) Secretary General Batuke Imenda has urged the people of Keembe to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema who has solutions to problems being faced by Zambians.

Mr Imenda says Zambians must not vote for people who are advancing tribalism instead of offering solutions to their plight.

The party Secretary General was speaking in Keembe this afternoon during a mobilization meeting in Keembe.

Mr Imenda said Keembe was a farming area that should produce huge yields but because of the high cost of farming inputs such as fertiliser, the region was suffering.

He said once elected President Hichilema would ensure that farmers got reasonably priced fertiliser because he was a farmer like them.

Mr Imenda noted that President Hichilema was a businessman who had built a successful business empire and therefore was capable of running the country successfully too.

The Secretary General also presented UPND aspiring candidate for MP Princess Kasune and Councillor Chairperson Nyeleti.

Mr Imenda also recieved defectors from the ruling PF led Keembe district Chairman

President Edgar is the best option for the office of the President of Zambia-Given Lubinda

President Edgar is the best option for the office of the President of Zambia says long time parliamentarian and political analyst Given Lubinda.

In an interview recorded live for Zambia National Broadcasting Television (ZNBC), Mr Lubinda said the best decision the Zambian people could make in the forthcoming 12th August polls would be a re-endorsement for Lungu.

“He has a proven record of delivering development,” Mr Lubinda, a four-term popular parliamentarian for Kabwata constituency said, “I know what I am talking about because I have been in the opposition as a legislator and have also served other Presidents apart from Dr Lungu so I can safely place my entire weight behind his candidature.”

Responding to some tough questions from ZNBC top anchor Grevazio Zulu, Mr Lubinda encouraged Zambians to stick to a candidate that has “a record of practical delivery instead of experimenting with unknown candidates or candidates whose claim to firm is losing elections.”

Mr Lubinda who recently broke the Zambian political glass ceiling by standing down as a candidate in Kabwata at the peak of his popularity cautioned Zambians to stay in the lane they know.

“President Lungu has been on the right side of Zambians and improved the energy sector, added value to agriculture and perhaps has taken some of the most radical but progressive economic decisions under and very harsh circumstances such as the COVID epidemic,” Said Mr Lubinda.

The veteran politician conversely asked Zambians to heed President Lungu´s call for ´distancing ‘under the covid cloud to avoid super spreading events such as rallies and do smart campaigns as Zambia braces for another covid wave.

“President Lungu has taken a lead and avoided super spreading events such as huge rallies even at the peak of his popularity and stellar oratory skills in order to avoid sacrificing lives that could be lost at public political rallies,” said Mr Lubinda.

“He is a President who knows he can fill up a stadium with a 24-hour announcement but has instead chosen to fly below the radar,” said Mr Lubinda, “This is a mark of true leadership every political player must drive their campaign on. We don’t want a victory written in blood due to political selfishness.”

The Ministry of Health, Office of the Vice President Inonge Mutukwa Wina, including the Inspector General of Police Kakoma kanganja have advised that public rallies that could lead to a needless loss of lives would not be allowed ahead of the 12th of August polls.

“President Lungu takes the lives of Zambians much more seriously than a mere political victory,” said Mr Lubinda, “the developmental projects we promised and have delivered especially in infrastructure will speak for us.”

Mr Lubinda said as far as he is concerned, “President Lungu and the PF have already won and sealed this election by the time the polling stations close at 18:00hrs on 12th August.”

A myriad of opposition parties and leaders are in the race for plot 1 which according to analysts if being led by President Lungu whom analysts say is a “sure front runner” for re-election.

President Lungu´s PF has been commended from within and outside for the massive infrastructure development, energy expansion and economic diversity.

Mr Lubinda made most of the comments on the side-lines of the Sunday Interview.

“It is very important for our good people of Zambia to always remember the good under President Lungu above political rhetoric from the tired opposition,” said Mr Lubinda.

The Family Week Long Visits by Inmates has been supported by the Law since 1965-PS

The Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified that the law that empowers inmates with a two weeklong leave to visit their families has been in existence since 1965.

Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Masiye Banda says government’s desire is to have a prison service where human rights for inmates are respected.

Mr. Banda says government means well for inmates and the safety of the general public adding that it will do everything possible to ensure that the safety of its citizens remains a priority.

He adds that contrary to what was reported in some sections of the media, the objectives of the signed act include repealing and replacing the prison act of 1965 among others.

Mr. Banda says the Zambian Correctional Service Bill of 2021 will now strengthen the operations of the service and give effect to the paradigm shift from being a punitive institution to a correctional system.

He has further clarified that the clause of giving licenses to prisoners serving life sentences has always been in the statutes but despite being provided for, none of the Commissioners of the service has ever invoked the act.

Mr. Banda adds that the provision has been added to the new Correctional Service Act and its application shall still remain the discretion of the Commissioner General.

He has since advised members of the public to familiarize themselves with the Correctional Service Act and appreciate its reformatory objectives.

Meanwhile, Mr. Banda says the ministry and the correction service are saddened by the alleged barbaric act by inmates Joseph Chiteta and Miles Malaya, who were moved to Mukobeko Medium Prison after having served part of their long sentences at Mukobeko Maximum Prison.

He says the suspects escaped from Kabwe Medium Security Correctional Centre’s Mukuyu Correctional Farm on April 7th 2021 after committing nine murder cases and was recaptured on May 23rd after 46 days at large on the Copperbelt.

Mr. Banda says the Zambia Police Service are investigating the matter and shall ensure that no stone is left unturned.

Kanganja warns Doctors Association President and threatens to arrest those attending illegal ZOOM meetings

31

Inspector-General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has warned Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) President Brian Sampa of arrest should he continue disregarding his three months suspension pending investigations and hearing into his conduct as a medical doctor.

Mr. Kanganja said that Dr. Sampa should not perform his duties as a medical doctor or participate in any activity related to his profession during the next three months.

Mr. Kanganja said that this was a directive by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) for Dr. Sampa to comply with, but he has however continued to address zoom meetings as RDAZ President.

The Police Chief added that Dr. Sampa’s behaviour is in contravention of the conditions of his suspension which are in line with the Health Professions Act of 2009.

He has warned Dr. Sampa that police will move in and arrest him should he desist.

Mr. Kanganja has also warned those attending Dr. Sampa’s meetings on Zoom platforms that they will also be picked up for attending the illegal meetings, as the police have enough capacity to do so, adding that the new law on Cyber-crime and security has made the work of the police on such matters easier.

The IG was speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday.

Three days ago, the Health Professional Council of Zambia (HPCZ) suspended Dr. Sampa’s practicing license for gross professional misconduct.

RTSA suspends all spinning and drifting motor sporting events

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has with immediate effect suspended all spinning and drifting motor sporting events in the country until safety standards are improved.

RTSA Director and Chief Executive Officer Gladwell Banda says the move follows an accident recorded yesterday in which a male spectator was killed after the driver who was taking part in spinning and drifting lost control of the vehicle and careered off the course rushing into a group of spectators.

He says a number of spectators were also injured in the accident which involved a Toyota Altezza which was being driven by a man identified as Nason Kapambala at National Sports Development Centre-NASDEC.

Mr. Banda has conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved family, describing the accident as tragic and unfortunate.

And Police have identified the deceased as 37 years old Mulenga Chiti.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo says Mr. Chiti sustained fatal injuries after the accident and was pronounced dead upon arrival at UTH.

Ms. Katongo has also identified the injured as George Chulu aged 33years of Woodlands who sustained multiple cuts on the right leg and Chongo Bwembya of Emmasdale who sustained fractured legs.

PART V: Who’s Who In 2021 Zambia Presidential Elections

Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of Zambia and Leader of the Patriotic Front

Who really is Edgar Chagwa Lungu? Who is this man Zambians have entrusted with leadership beyond question? Are we a better people under his leadership? What creative ideas has he provided to better our economy? Why is he at the center of the most devastating scandals—authoritarianism, bribery, corruption, gassing, trafficking, and money laundering? What marks him a success or failure? Does he deserve another five years? Good questions addressed here in a nutshell. When you are done reading, use the comments provision to answer some of the above questions.

It’s the Economy Stupid

Hold on a minute Kanganja. Let me explain what I mean lest I am accused of defaming the president. The above phrase was coined in 1992 by Bill Clinton’s lead strategist James Carville at the height of the Clinton vs. Bush Sr. campaign to emphasize the near-recession state of the U.S. economy. The cliché urges voters to treat the economy as a priority. I employ the cliché to address perhaps the most important question: What creative ideas has Lungu provided to better our economy?

Back in 2017, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said: “We’ve to get away from this mindset of dependency.” The words were directed at Africans in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron. “Our concern should be what do we need to do in the 21st century to move Africa away from being cap in hand and begging for aid, for charity, for handouts? The African continent when you look at its resources, should be giving monies to other places…we need to have a mindset that says we can do it.”

The word “resources” hit home. Mineral resources are Zambia’s biggest asset, accounting for 77% of its exports. I said to myself what if Lungu ingeniously flipped ownership of Kantanshi copper-gold mines to 20% First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and 80% Zambia? It would mean out of the 340,000 tonnes of copper, Zambia would be entitled to 272,000 and FQM 68,000 per year. Just this one move would lift a good number of Zambians into the middle class.

The adverb “ingeniously” is a key factor here. Five years in his reign, President Roch Kaboré of Burkina Faso has “ingeniously” salvaged Africa’s poorest country by creating a new market for gold exploration and exportation. Nineteen years after the Rwanda genocide President Paul Kagame has turned his country into “Africa’s Singapore” by “ingeniously” stabilizing the country’s economy, curbing tribalism, and bettering education, healthcare and housing.

As for Akufo-Addo, he has since assumed the title of “Ghana’s number one worker.” Since assuming office on January 7, 2017, Akufo-Addo has fought corruption, and created about a million job opportunities. Rightfully, a series of Africa’s Best Presidents polls published between 2016 and 2020 place Akufo-Addo at the top, and Lungu at the bottom of the totem pole.

Why is Lungu at the bottom?

Here, I provide my findings. Almost every modern scholar’s survey, polling, and rating, gives the abiding sense that Lungu is an inconsequential president. Some describe him as an obtuse, incoherent, slothful, lackluster leader with no idea how to steer Zambia to prosperity. Many intimate that although he has some intellectual force, and radiates a good nature, he is not a thinker, casuist, sophist, or mastermind—he is not a mover and shaker.
It is true. Lungu’s country is in a calamitous recession. He has recklessly borrowed about $3 billion from Chinese entities, and is still borrowing. Worse still, Lungu has brought Zambia to the brink of defaulting on unsustainable $12 billion external debt load. Debt default has paved the way for the Chinese and international creditors to impose modus operandi on the country’s copper, gold, uranium, cobalt, land resources and major parastatals.

Consequently, the majority of Zambians are still living in abject poverty, 68% living on $1.7 a day, and 28% on less than 30 cents. And with Covid-19 still looming, the economy is headed for a catastrophic crash what with serious macroeconomic challenges, such as double digit inflation, reaching 22.2% last February.

Why can’t Lungu emulate President João Lourenco of Angola, who upon taking office in 2018, exposed corruption and nepotism and recovered millions of dollars from his predecessor and daughter; or soccer legend now President of Liberia George Weah who has made education free up to university, so that he can surround himself not with a coterie of lawless semi-literate advisors but intellectuals who can do battles with marauders of African resources, and read the fine print in Chinese infrastructure contracts.

Records show that even before he entered politics Lungu was not a person who maps a successful path of his own and does things out of the ordinary—an outlier, a gamesman, maverick, innovator or nonconformist. He was not among the crème de la crème of Zambia’s lawyers. Upon graduating from law school Lungu dashed to Andrea Masiye and Company while some of his creative peers figured out how to run their own law firms.

It is said Lungu spent the chunk of his legal practice by simply showing up in court on behalf of his employer, and laying the law by the book with no wit, eloquence, and creative strategy of salvaging a client at his most urgent need. In fact, Lungu is not known to have successfully defended a high-profile client.

Documents further reveal that in 2010, the Law Association of Zambia found Lungu guilty of professional misconduct and suspended his license. It is alleged that Lungu misappropriated client’s money. If true, then we have a Commander-in-Thief at State House. “Once a thief always a thief,” so the saying goes. With this in mind, the PF party should have disqualified Lungu at the 2014 General Conference. A president’s ethics and uprightness should be beyond doubt.

Lungu emerged a winner and entered State House as an interregnum president on November 30, 2014. He sat on the throne woefully under-qualified with no usable experience, vision, skill, or mission. The quality of his leadership was revealed when he announced he was going to rely on Sata’s vision and took his oath of office upon that. Six years later, Lungu has led Zambians into the valley of debt in which we are grappling with the worst recession since 1998. That’s what China was hoping, to bring Lungu to his knees.

Imagine for a moment if Lungu was like the late Tanzanian President John Magufuli who in 2020 cancelled the loan worth $10 billion offered by China, stating “Only a drunkard will accept the terms” of the loan agreement. I am not implying that he was referring to Lungu, which might be the case since the incumbent is known to like the bottle. Unlike Lungu, the Great Magufuli knew the dire consequences of reckless borrowing.

Give credit to Magufuli (RIP), he was fully aware of the millions of dollars that would go into his personal account if he appended his signature, yet chose not to. Why? Because he knew corruption was hindering economic, political and social development.

How Lungu Sowed the Seed of Corruption

Joshua Meservey writes in “The Heritage” that African leaders deal with Chinese government mainly out of self-interest. Meservey also reports that Lungu and other African leaders enjoy perks from a warm relationship with Beijing. Every handshake with Xi Jinping, every deal struck, agreement or contract signed, is a hefty check [cheque] in the personal account of the signatory. This shameful and unethical gesture is one of the reasons political corruption has become the biggest challenge in Zambia. Does this then mean money is at the heart of Lungu’s reign?

Shall we then assume that President Edgar Lungu is the same unscrupulous lawyer discussed in this article—one that put money before justice. Could greed be the reason Lungu has been signing contract after contract with no regard for the Zambian economy? Should this help to explain why PF officials are bribing voters with cash?

Shock and Awe

Just the other day, shock and awe reverberated around the country at seeing Vice President Inonge Wina engage in the egregious act of bribery. She has since denied any wrongdoing. That’s well understood. But if the viral video was used in court, it would be as undisputable as that of George Floyd. The judge would find the VP guilty of offering a gratification for the advantage or benefit of the ruling party, and send her to jail.

Freedom fighter Inonge Wina, a woman of integrity, wife of Zambia’s first Finance Minister buckled, and joined the likes of Bowman Lusambo, thanks to Edgar Lungu. If former President Kaunda, who exhibited inflexibility to corruption saw the video he would be flabbergasted. In his hay days he would have ordered a dawn raid and arrest of not only her but also Bowman Lusambo and all those involved in the dishing out of money in an election year.

The video shows how President Edgar Lungu, his VP, and the Patriotic Front Party capitalizes on the vulnerability of poor Zambians, upping the levels of moral decay and allowing corruption to rear its ugliest head. Corruption is the most disgraceful achievement of the Patriotic Front party.

Caution: Edgar Chagwa Lungu Might Win the Election

The verb “might” is important here.” One of the most enchanting gifts the Chinese “Palace Diplomacy” offers is maintenance of power and support of the ruling party in a presidential election. Since Lungu’s last visit to China, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has found him and the PF party best positioned to protect Chinese settlers, investment and assets in Zambia. Lungu offers gullibility on which to strategically execute future transfer of power from Zambia to China.

Currently, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) maintains particularly strong ties with the Patriotic Front Party (PF) and its leader Edgar Lungu. Corruption is one of the reasons Edgar Lungu might win in August. The cash dished out to voters by PF candidates leaves a Chinese trail. The other reason is China’s meddling in Zambian politics. At the top of China’s agenda is to kill democratic governance because of its negative impact on China’s covert neo-colonialism program in Africa.

CCP operatives are working around the clock to ensure Lungu is re-elected president in August. Unless the opposition finds a way to intercept “Digital Silk Road”—a subset of BRI through which Chinese operatives can deploy interference efforts and rig the election beyond the Zambian eye, Huawei, ZTE and Hikvision will deliver victory to Lungu come August.

GOLF: Muthiya Wins Magnum Classic Event

1

Local golf star Madalitso Muthiya needed a three-hole play-off to record a hard-fought victory at the Magnum Classic golf tournament held at Chainama Golf Club in Lusaka.

Muthiya was pushed to the play-off by Mwalikwa Sondashi, who had shot an underwhelming three-over-par 75 at the Professional Golfers Association of Zambia (PGAZ) event.

The two tied on a three-day level par-216 that was two shots better than Chilanga golfer Patrick Mwendapole senior who was the final day’s best player on two-under par 70.

Visiting Senegalese Samba Niang and Sydney Wemba emerged joint fourth on 11-over-par 227.

Amateurs Bwembya Chanda and Musamba Kapoma junior had a memorable competition.

Chanda finished with a four-over-par 220 to win the amateur title, just three strokes better than Kapoma, who defeated him at the Prudential Classic at Chilanga a fortnight ago.

Jesse Were scored a hat-trick today in a 4-0 demolition of Kitwe United at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola that put Zesco United within two points of the 2020/21 FAZ Super League title.

The goals were strangely Were’s  first hat-trick of the season by his  very high standards in what has been a very quiet campaign in which he  has scored a mere five league goals to date.

Were put Zesco ahead in the 8th minute before adding his second in the 31st minute.

Winston Kalengo sent Zesco 3-0 into the break in a first half Kitwe United were second best throughout.

The Kenyan international striker completed his hat-trick in the 55th minute.

Sunday’s victory saw Zesco restore its eight-point lead over Zanaco on 61 and 53 points with four and three games left to play.

Victory over Napsa at the same venue on June 9 will see Zesco attain an unassailable 63 points.

Zesco are chasing a ninth league crown that will see them equal Mighty Mufulira Wanderers and put them four titles behind record champions Nkana.

Kanganja again cautions political parties against conducting political activities without notifying the police

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has cautioned political parties against conducting political activities without notifying the police during campaigns.

Mr. Kanganja has observed that some politicians are deliberately disregarding provisions of the law by conducting political activities outside the provisions of the law.

He says some politicians have opted to disregard the advice by regulating officers and have opted to go ahead with public activities even when advised not to.

Mr. Kanganja has also expressed concern that political parties are conducting their door to door campaigns and processions without notifying the police while abrogating the Ministry of Heal COVID-19 guidelines.

He has further urged political parties intending to conduct public activities to have public health certificates and notify the police of their intentions for security purposes.

Mr. Kanganja says some of the unregulated door to door campaign activities and processions which have resulted in political cadres clashing resulting in some sustaining injuries.

He has warned that Police will not condone such misconduct which has the potential to instill fear in members of communities.

Mr. Kanganja has since called on all those that intend to have public gatherings including Resident Doctors who have been gathering illegally to abide by Public Health guidelines which have been spelt out by Health experts through the laws of Zambia.

He says any conduct to the contrary shall not be tolerated by police and those found abrogating the law shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Inspector General has directed all Regulating Officers at all levels to be firm on the ground and ensure that law and order prevails at all times.

Mr Imenda said there are many unanswered questions regarding purchase of fire tenders at inflated prices as well as purchase of expired drugs.
The party Secretary General was speaking in Kabwe yesterday during a mobilization exercise in three wards.

And UPND Chairman for Industry and Commerce Bernard Mpundu said it was time for Zambians to assess the performance of PF government and decide and allow themselves to be hoodwinked with paltry offers of mealie meal.

Mr Mpundu reminded the voters of the escalating high commodity prices and urged them to use it as the yardstick to vote the Lungu led PF regime out of office.

Over 2,000 tonnes of Genetically Modified Maize seed from four provinces

The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) says it has seized over 2,000 tonnes of genetically modified (GMO) maize seed from four provinces of the country.

In a statement issued by the Authority Communications Officer Sandra Lombe said, the seed which was yet to be on the Zambian market has been seized and will be destroyed according to the Biosafety Act No. 10 of 2007.

Ms Lombe stated that the Authority randomly collected 74 samples of different varieties of maize from some farms fields and warehouses in Lusaka, Central, Southern and Northern provinces and subjected them to GMO test using Polymerase Chain Reaction.

“Of these 74 samples, from various farmers across the four provinces, four samples tested positive to genetic modification and have since been seized on site by the Authority. During the investigation the four samples were subjected to tests at local and international laboratories. The affected farmers have been directed to immediately confine, contain and secure the products as per the provisions of the Biosafety Act,” she said.

“The 2,187 tonnes seized products will be destroyed in the presence of the NBA officials and other relevant authorities. However, investigations into the matter have continued. We are also working with other relevant authorities on the same matter.”

Meanwhile Ms Lombe added that the NBA has continued with the sampling and testing of the seed products from the farms and warehouses countrywide.
“We are happy with the cooperation we have received so far from the farmers, seed growers and seed companies. We are not only sampling from commercial farmers and seed companies but also small scale farmers,” he said.

“Apart from maize seed we are also looking at soya beans. The Biosafety Act prohibits any genetic modification activity on crops or livestock of strategic importance.”

She further said the Authority has continued with its monitoring, inspections and surveillance across the country and the presence of inspectors at the ports of entry has had a positive impact in the monitoring of the inflow of GMO products and products that may contain GMOs.

“We still remain committed to ensuring that any GMO product or a product which may contain GMOs authorized on the market is safe for humans, animals and the environment.”

President Lungu can’t Decide how Campaigns should be conducted,he is also a player in the Game-UPND Youth chairperson

26

United Party for National Development (UPND) Lusaka provincial youth chairperson Mr Anderson Banda has charged that the directive from President Lungu to ban rallies during this year’s election was rhetoric and hypocrisy of the highest level.

Mr Banda said this when he appeared on Diamond TV live show at 09:09:00hrs anchored on campaigns in the COVID-19 era.

Mr Banda charged that whilst Mr Lungu was making a directive of banning rallies as a measure to address COVID-19 pandemic at Mulungushi conference centre, there were huge crowds of people outside Mulungushi conference centre which was totally against his own directive.

Mr Banda said that Zambia was not the only country to have elections during COVID-19 period because many countries like USA, Tanzania, Malawi and other countries conducted elections in Manner they deemed fit while observing COVID-19 guidelines.

Mr Banda wondered why many Donations towards COVID-19 are not seeing being given to the intended people even when huge amounts of money and other resources have been donated to caution the impact of COVID-19 to the wellbeing of our people.

Mr Banda vowed that UPND will conduct campaigns according to their wishes and no one will stop them from doing what is suppose to be done and that President Lungu who is a player in this case shouldn’t be seen or heard doing the role of a referee.

Mr Banda called on the people of Zambia to use this year’s election as an answer to the many challenges they have been facing for the past 10 years PF took over power.

Mr Banda assured the people of Zambia that voting for UPND and President HH was the best decision to liberate themselves from this high cost of living PF has brought.

He stated that the youths in Lusaka province will not be intimidated by anyone who would wish to provoke them even when they are peaceful people and that whoever will bring violence will be himself to blame
