Suspensions is The Name of The Game in Kitwe

2

Here is a brief wrap of some late  Monday sports news.

PERRY MUTAPA SUSPENDED

Power Dynamos have sent coach Perry Mutapa on forced leave following a poor run of league results.

The culmination of the decision came after Sunday’s 2-0 Kitwe derby home loss to Nkana that saw ex-Power striker Alex Ngonga score for Nkana who switched allegiances in April after terminating  his contract at  Arthur Davies Stadium due to an alleged  fallout with Mutapa.

Mutapa’s long-serving assistant Masautso Tembo has been placed in interim charge.

Power are currently eighth  on the log on  38  points,  three points off the pace in the top four continental qualifying race with five games left to  play.

FAZ BANS NKANA QUEENS

Nkana’s women club Nkana Queens have been provisionally suspended from the FAZ Women’s National League.

This follows its player’s violent conduct against referees and a ball boy over the weekend of their away league game against ZISD in Lusaka.

FAZ has given Nkana Queens up to May 13 to submit names of all those involved in the violent incident against the match officials and ball boy.

Education Stakeholders appeal to govt to continue with the STEM curriculum

The Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) has appealed to government to reconsider their decision to revert to the old curriculum and discontinue the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) transitional curriculum in technical schools as the decision is likely to affect the pupils who have already started using the curriculum and are scheduled to write exams this year.

ZNUT Secretary General Newman Bubala was reacting to government’s decision to suspend the use of the STEM education transitional curriculum in light of concerns raised by stakeholders on the implementation of STEM curriculum in schools.

Mr. Bubala told ZANIS that government should have consulted stakeholders and communicated challenges to all before the decision was implemented.

“It’s a question of what does this reversal mean? Is it practical that children can revert and ready to write an exam? What does this mean for those who have been learning?” he said

And reacting to the same, National Action for Quality Education in Zambia NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa says the institution is disappointed at the turn of events because the STEM education curriculum was a very brilliant idea for the country’s education system.

Mr. Chansa has appealed to the Ministry to quickly sit down with all stakeholders and departments involved and reinstate the system as it will enable the country raise scientists, mathematicians and critical thinkers for the positive effects on the country.

“These schools must revert back to the STEM curriculum because it is intended to develop the pupils’ specs for the learners and also develop critical thinkers, those that are innovative so that we are able to raise scientists, technologists and also engineers, including mathematicians,” he said.

He said NAQEZ supported the STEM curriculum because of the positive effects that it will have on the students and the country.

And Annie Daka a parent, said her children who are in Grade 9 and Grade 11, both in STEM schools are discouraged at the development, which requires them to catch up on the missed lessons in a short period before exam.

“My child who is in Grade 11 has never studied Biology because the school only concentrated in Physics and Chemistry and now she has to start learning Biology. How is she supposed to catch up before exams?” she wondered.

Mrs. Daka said the transitioning might take a lot of work and time for the pupils who have already made tremendous progress in their research.

She has since appealed to the Ministry of General Education to reconsider their decision or close schools to allow for students in the STEM to catch up with their colleagues in subjects that were not covered in the STEM curriculum.

Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Dr. Jobbicks Kalumba announced the cancellation of the STEM curriculum in a memo to all Provincial Education Officers dated May 7, 2021.

Ministry of Tourism receives support equipment for the conservation and management of Kafue National Park

Minister of Tourism and Arts Ronald Chitotela has received equipment valued at more than 600,000 United States Dollars (USD) from African Parks.

The equipment include motor vehicles, air assets and equipment for the conservation and management of Kafue National Park.

Receiving the donated items, Mr. Chitotela disclosed that government was happy with progress achieved in supporting conservation and management of Kafue National Park.

The Minister indicated that government remains committed to the further advancement of the wildlife sanctuary and the communities surrounding it.

“Government takes great pride in the progress that has already been achieved these past two months, and remains committed to the further advancement of this extraordinary wildlife sanctuary and the communities surrounding it,” Mr. Chitotela stated.

And the Minister warned poachers and encroachers not to engage in illegal activities in the Kafue as he called on African Parks to help in bringing the problem to a stop.

Meanwhile, African Parks Chief Executive Officer Peter Fearnhead said the Kafue National Park and other parks in the country have the potential to grow thus the network is committed to supporting government.

At the same event African Parks handed over a Cheque worth 3.7 million kwacha for salaries to law enforcement officers at the Kafue National Park for the first quarter of 2021.

And the Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Patrick Lungu said that the support will go a long way in restoring biodiversity within and around the Kafue landscape.

The event marked the implementation of the Priority Support Plan (PSP), lauding the first steps taken within the initiative to boost its social, ecological and economic potential which was announced in February this year.

The Priority Support Plan is a collaboration between the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and African Parks, aimed at increasing technical and financial support for Kafue, worth US$3.4 million over a period of 12 months.

Key developments include the procurement of five vehicles, the delivery of a helicopter and aircraft to enhance surveillance, the installation of two aircraft hangars, upgrades for offices, utilities and access routes, and salaries provided for all law enforcement staff to cover the first quarter.

American based Bishop Call for peace ahead of August polls

Lovefest Church International Francis Myles says political stability is necessary for development and regional integration as the country prepares for this year’s tripartite elections.

The United States of America based Bishop noted that there is need to pray for peace and unity as the country prepares for the fourth coming general elections.

He said that the church needs to pray for the country and deal with issues that may hinder a fair and transparent election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, Bishop Myles added that violence and unrest exhibited during the election time is orchestrated by the works of Satan.

He said that as the country goes to the polls, a lot is expected as the constitution of the country denotes that Zambia is a Christian nation.

Bishop Myles noted that there is need for church leaders to work together and maintain the peace that the country has continued to enjoy.

He said that the country must be commended for the progress made in infrastructure development across the country

“For this to continue, political stability is vital and political stability stems from spiritual stability hence the need for the courts of heaven conference to deal with spiritual problems,” he added

Bishop Myles said that the general elections coincide with the end of the country’s 7th national development plan which spells among other things the need to accelerate infrastructure development.

He added that the conference which his church will conduct will also educate Christians on the need to participate in the elections as voter apathy is a growing concern.

And Liberty in Christ Ministries Senior Pastor, Nellie Kangwa said that Church leaders from different churches will hold a prophetic summit from August 4 to 7, 2021 to pray for the election process.

Pastor Kangwa noted that Zambia is a peace loving nation that should denounce violence among its citizens

“Some of the things we are seeing in the past months are not Zambian, this is why we are getting together as men and women of God to call on God to come into our nation,’’ she noted.

She further appealed to the citizens to participate and pray for the country ahead of the general elections.

NYDC refutes claims of nonpayment to youths

The National Youth development Council (NYDC), has refuted claims doing rounds on social media, alleging that the council has not been paying youths who are under the National internship programme their allowances for the past three months.

NYDC Council Secretary David Musonda said the Council was currently compiling the details for the affected youths hence the allegations are unfounded.

Mr. Musonda disclosed that most of the details and information which was submitted from the youths in various constituencies across the country contained incorrect bank details for various pay points.

Mr Musonda told ZANIS in an Interview that the Council is aware of some youths who have not yet been paid and that measure are being put in place to address the challenge.

He explained that some of the challenges were due to long distance from the Central Business District hence the delay in being paid.

‘’As a Council we are is scrutinizing the accounts and once the information such as bank details are rectified and compiled, all the arrears being owed to the affected youths will be settled,” Mr. Musonda noted.

He further disclosed that other instances involved cases of youths who did not qualify for the internship programme as they were above the age limit hence the reason why they were removed from the payroll.

He noted that the targeted age group for one to qualify for the National youths internship required was 19-35yaers as prescribed by the law.

Mr Musonda further noted that National youth development Internship programme which was launched last year in August 2020 by President Edgar Lungu is coming to an end in October 2021.

More than 6, 000 youths have been recruited in the national youth internship programme from the time it was launched in August 2020.

Zambians seeking more Justice, Equity & Peace – Musumali

5

By Mable Tubaaka

THE SOCIALIST Party’s manifesto is based on “the aspirations, hopes and dreams” of ordinary Zambians, general secretary and first vice-president Cosmas Musumali told TV viewers.

Speaking on Hot FM’s The Hot Seat programme on the subject “Socialist Vision”, Dr Musumali told interviewer Peter Pzee Zulu Jr that the party had visited villages, towns and compounds asking “fundamental questions”.

“So what is stated in the manifesto today represents the aspirations, hopes and dreams of Zambians. These are not ideas from Cosmas Musumali’s, Fred M’membe’s or maybe Chris Mwikisa’s heads,” he said. “No. These are aggregates, summarised opinions of what Zambians need. We summarised them under three headings: Zambians need more justice – there is an issue of justice, Zambians are seeking more equity – equity becomes the huge pillar in terms of our manifesto, and Zambians want peace – they want a peaceful society.”
Dr Musumali said the manifesto reflected that justice, equity and peace – JEP– were the pillars of Zambians’ needs “in their lives, for their future, for the future of their grandchildren”.

“We were the first political party in Zambia to launch a manifesto,” Dr Musumali said. “We shared it with the Zambian public. There was a special occasion when we launched it and it has been debated in a lot of places we have visited. We bring out our manifesto and subject it to discussions by the Zambian masses.
“Our manifesto is original, it is for the masses and is a product of the broader thinking of Zambians. It is a manifesto that goes beyond just the Socialist Party and its leadership.”

Dr Musumali said the manifesto was a year old, adding there was no point in producing one close to elections. “If you produce a manifesto a few months before elections, what is the intention in a country where people don’t have a culture of reading? It means even your own party members will never understand it. It’s making a joke of democracy by coming up with a manifesto at a late hour.”

Zulu asked Dr Musumali if Zambia was ready for socialism. “Is Zambia ready for equity? The answer is yes. That’s what Zambians yearn for. Do Zambians want justice? Yes. Every human being wants a sense of justice. Do Zambians want peace? Yes. They are crying out for peace. Zambia is becoming a very violent country, we are destroying our country, we are destroying ourselves, if not physically, then mentally.”

Dr Musumali said the needs of Zambians could not be met by capitalism. “Our understanding is that you can’t have peace, justice, or equity in the capitalist society we have today. Only a socialist-inspired society can guarantee those three basic tenets of democracy. When you talk about socialism, they are not abstract words. We are talking about more equity. That’s it. What is so difficult about that?”

Zulu asked Dr Musumali how long it would take for the Socialist Party to transform Zambian society. He replied that, while there were short or medium-term plans – looking five years ahead for example – it was important to have a long-term vision.

“You have to plan much longer, your vision has to go beyond five years,” he said. “Our friends in China look at 300 years, but we want to dream of a Zambia 50 years from now. But that 50 years is not built in 50 years, it has to be built today. The steps you take today give you the foundation for the society you want to build. Our manifesto puts the building blocks, the foundation, upon which that 50 years society – a socialist society – is going to be built by Zambians.”

Dr Musumali said Zambia’s current capitalist institutions were weak and could not deliver equity. “We have to start from there, and if we are starting from a low level, we have to be patient,” he said. “We have to know exactly which step to work on first, and we have worked on that. We know what we want to do in the first instance. We have said that when building socialism, we will start with three areas in terms of building equity; we are looking at health, education and peasant agriculture.”

Dr Musumali said those three key areas of socialisation were just the beginning of the project. “We hope that in the first five years we will make drastic changes, transformative changes, in health, education and peasant agriculture. That will give us the foundation [for] the superstructures we need in order to build a much more humane society.”

Kazungula Bridge to enhance free trade-President Lungu

7

President Edgar Lungu has expressed optimism that the newly commissioned Kazungula Bridge will contribute positively towards the achievement of the prosperous Africa as aspired for in the African Union agenda 2063.

President Lungu has also expressed gratitude to the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for their relentless support and inclusion of the Kazungula project in SADC regional infrastructure development in Africa.

ZANIS reports that President Lungu was speaking during the ceremony to commission the Kazungula Bridge one stop boarder Post in Kazungula yesterday, co-hosted by Botswana.

“This facility will promote and facilitate access to international market through linkages to major sea ports,” President Lungu said.

President Lungu further noted that the facility, gives an impetus to the implementation of the SADC, COMESA and African continental free trade area.

“This bridge in my view will also add more integration between Zambia and Botswana, Tanzania, the Republic of Congo and the East African region,” he added.

“This bridge was worth the effort because the transit time will greatly improve because of trade facilitation measures and boarder management due to the inclusion of a one stop border post,” he stated.

President Lungu stressed that the project is a significant milestone in the bilateral regional and continental cooperation.

He also disclosed that the digital wing of the government called Smart Zambia, has digitalized the department of immigration of Zambia and has put it on government e-service BUS so as to allow people around the world to access services which is supporting multiple payment models such as mobile money payment, electronic wallet payment and direct bank payments.

“I wish to pay tribute to the former presidents of Bostwana and Zambia for the roles they played and whose leadership set the foundation for the Joined project and ensured its continued progression,” he stated.

“From the Zambian perspective, this is another monumental agenda to transforming the country through infrastructure development,” President Lungu said.

He pointed out that government will continue to channel efforts towards enhancing the wellbeing of the people through investment in infrastructure to ensure the country is well linked.

“It is gratifying that President of the Republic of Congo DRC, Felix Tshisekedi is here , because we are working on a similar project with that country called the Kasomena – Mwenda toll road bridge border post and once completed it will decongest the Kasumbalesa border post on the Waives bay and the Ndola lubumbashi corridor,” he said.

And President of Bostwana Mokgweetsi Masisi who co-hosted the event said his country attaches great importance to the friendly bilateral relations that happily subsist between the two countries.

He said that Bostwana regards Zambia as a key partner in development.

“This bridge is testimony to the ever growing cooperation which exist between the two countries,” he said.

Other heads of State who attended the ceremony include president of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi and President of Zimbabwe Emerson Mnangagwa who both praised the project as a development for the whole African continent.

Adopting me will bring more votes to our President and not less, says PF Kitwe Mayoral aspirant Jaya Ashani

32

Patriotic Front Kitwe Mayoral aspirant Jaya Ashani says being a Zambian of Asian origin is not a disadvantage in her quest to land the position.

Ashani is one of the several people that have applied to contest the Kitwe mayoral position on the PF ticket ahead of the August general election.

In an interview, the teacher, accountant, and business executive believe if adopted she will help to get more votes for the PF from many Zambians of Asian origin.

“Well, me being a Zambian of Asian origin, I believe it is an advantage. In the first place the cardinal point is I am a Zambia so my affiliation is to my Zambian family,” Ashani said.

“I believe it is a strong point in me that I am of Asian origin. The Asian community’s support is already on my side. For the Asian community they have seen that if the Asian lady supports his Excellency the President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, she must have seen the value of what he has done for us,” she said.

Ashani added:” I do believe I will be an asset to our party so adopting me will bring more votes to our President and not less.”

In previous interviews, Ashani has promised leadership anchored on integrity and honesty.

She has promised to revive recreation, sports facilities and open up proper alternative roads connecting the city to other towns beside the usual Chingola or Ndola Roads.

President Lungu commissions the Kazungula Bridge, says the facility would promote regional and continental integration

28

President Edgar Lungu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards improving people’s livelihoods through strategic infrastructural development.

President Lungu has said the Patriotic Front government would continue to channel efforts towards enhancing the well-being of the Zambian people through, among other ways, investment in strategic infrastructure to ensure the country was well linked internally and externally to facilitate easy movement of goods, people and services.

Speaking during the official commissioning of the Kazungula Bridge Project today, President Lungu said the transit traffic through Kazungula Border would greatly improve due to reduced border transit time and improved trade facilitation measures and border management operations.

“This is because of the inclusion of the one-stop border post which will lower the cost of doing business and result in an increase in trade and competitiveness, job creation, tourism, and other positive ripple effects. The development will also lead to the development of our local communities,” president lungu said.

The project is a masterpiece that has connected Zambia and Botswana as well as the southern African region hence the commissioning ceremony was graced by various heads of state including His Excellency Mr. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republican of Congo and African Union Chairperson who was also the Guest of Honour, His Excellency Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of Mozambique and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson, Hs Excellency Dr.. Mokgweetsi Masisi, President of Botswana and His Excellency Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe among other dignitaries.

And the Head of State has said that in addition to national and bilateral significance, the facility would also promote regional and continental integration as it would facilitate increased intra-African trade.

He said that the development would give impetus to the implementation of the SADC-eastern African community-common market for Eastern and Southern Africa (SADC-EAC-COMESA) tripartite free trade area and the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“This facility is a critical milestone in the development of the north-south corridor as it will also facilitate access to international markets through linkages to major seaports,” President Lungu added.

And President Lungu has expressed gratitude to the African Union and SADC for their support and inclusion of the project in the SADC Regional Infrastructure Development Masterplan and the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

He said he was confident that the Kazungula Bridge Project would contribute positively towards the achievement of a prosperous Africa as aspired for in the African Union Agenda 2063.

“Going forward, we need to ensure that we operationalize this multi-million-dollar facility in an efficient and effective manner to ensure sustainability and the attainment of its intended objectives,” President Lungu said.

He added that the facility required continued collaboration, ownership and responsible action on the part of all the stakeholders involved including the users, border agencies, surrounding communities, facilitators, and managers of the facilities.

President lungu has since called for the establishment of the Kazungula Bridge Authority that would manage and maintain the facility on behalf of the two governments.

WEEKEND SCORECARD:Chambeshi Salutes Ngonga After Kitwe Derby Win

1

Beston Chambeshi has showered plaudits on striker Alex Ngonga for shining in Nkana colours during Sunday’s big Kitwe derby against his ex-club Power Dynamos.

Ngonga scored Nkana’s second goal in the 90th minute to complete the struggling defending FAZ Super Division champions 2-0 away win over Power at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe after his strike partner Diamond Chikwekwe them ahead in the 30th minute.

It was his second goal in four matches since joining Nkana last month just after terminating his long-term deal with Power Dynamos.

“You know Alex is a fighter, he is a chap who can win a game alone but one good thing now is he is now in good hands,” Chambeshi said.

“Now I am with him at Nkana and we will work together and see how he can develop and does what he does best.”

Ngonga was a peripheral figure at Power this season and barely featuring in Perry Mutapa’s plans.

Meanwhile, Sundays win ended Nkana’s three month winless drought that dated back to February 4 when they beat Nkwazi 2-0 away in Lusaka before picking.

In-between, second from bottom Nkana have had only collected two draws in that ten-match dry spell.

Electoral Commission of Zambia Unveils the certified 2021 register of voters, it’s 7, 023, 499 voters

14

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ has announced that the certified 2021 register of voters stands at 7, 023, 499.

Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano announced that this was after consolidation, deduplication, transfers , appeals and objections on the voter register.

Mr Nshindano said only 43.2 percent of registered voters were able to verify their details.

“Of these 57 percent verified physically whilst 43 percent verified digitally,” he said.

He said the commission has removed 21, 106 duplicate records from the register.

“Out of 7 023 499, 3, 751 040 are female representing 53.4 percent while 3, 272, 459 are male representing 46.6 percent,” he said.

Mr Nshindano further disclosed that the age group between 24 years and 34 years accounted for the highest proportion of the registered voters accounting to 29.6 percent.

“This was followed by the age group 34 years to 50 years at 28.9 percent. The age group 50 years and above was the lowest proportion of registered voters at 17.1 percent. 24 years and below age group accounted for 24.4 percent, “ he added.

Mr Nshindano also stated that Lusaka Province accounts for the highest number of registered voters representing 17.71 percent with 1, 243, 619, whilst North Western is lowest at 5.51 percent with 386, 677 of the total register of voters.

He also stated that at constituency level, Kanyama of Lusaka District has the highest number of registered voters at 177, 411 whilst Lufubu Constituency of Ngabwe District has the lowest number of registered voters at 11, 411.

Mr Nshindano also said the Certified Register will be made public after being printed and will be going at K50 per polling station.

He however said presidential candidates will be given a free copy of the register.

Meanwhile Mr Nshindano also disclosed that 19 political parties have paid the K95 000 kwacha which is a requirement for nominations.

He however said this does not mean that all 19 will stand in the 2021 general election as there are other requirements that the candidates need to have.

PF government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu has fought corruption tooth and nail

THE RULING Patriotic Front (PF) Media Director Antonio Mwanza has said the PF government under the leadership of President Edgar Lungu has fought corruption tooth and nail.

Speaking when he featured on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview last night, Mr Mwanza said the Head of State believes that there are absolutely no sacred cows in the fight against corruption.

The PF Media Director said the President does not shield anyone were corruption is concerned. He added that this is evidenced by the number of civil servants that have been convicted in the Courts of the law.

“PF is the first party after UNIP to have introduced Integrity Committees so that they supervise all the operations of government and make sure that people that have been charged with the responsibility to take care of natural and financial resources are accountable,” he said.

“We the PF are the ones that operationised the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) because we believe that we need intelligence to follow issues of corruption.”
He said PF government has put in place the Financial Management Law to oversee its expenditure, made sure that the operations of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) are done openly and ensured that the Auditor General’s Report is made public for all to see.

Meanwhile, Mr Mwanza said those that defected to the party such as Dr Chishimba Kambwili, former NDC leader mean well for both the PF and the country.
He said the former opposition leader and many others who raised corrupt allegations against government whilst in opposition realized that they were not being factual hence their move to join the ruling party.

“They raised several allegations against the ruling party which were not factual. The reason they were doing so is because they were crying, ‘olila sibamugwila pakamwa.’ So at that time, you expect anything all sorts of emotional sentiments.”

President Lungu holds talks with Mozambique and DRC counterparts

President Edgar Lungu has held multilateral talks with visiting Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi and Mozambican leader Filipe Nyusi.

The three heads of State held closed-door talks at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in the tourist capital Livingstone.

And President Lungu has directed Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Malanji to ensure that he works with the new DRC Minister of Foreign Affairs Christophe Lutundula to strengthen and deepen existing bilateral relations between the two countries, for the benefit of the two peoples.

After the private talks, the three heads of State flew to the Kazungula border, to meet up with Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and other SADC leaders, for commissioning of the US$ 259 million mega bridge and international border facilities.

The Kazungula bridge will connect Zambia and Botswana and link the port of Durban to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania through the North and South Corridor.

The multi-million dollar infrastructure is expected to enhance trade and regional integration among SADC and COMESA member states. The Kazungula bridge will replace the age-old pontoon ferry at the border between Zambia and Botswana.
