The static screening equipment was installed at Madzimawe Rural Health Centre but that trained health personnel do conduct outreach programs in various health facilities to enable more women access the services at their door steps.

Dr Mvula has since urged women to consider going for cervical cancer screening as it can be treated if found in early stages and stop it from spreading.

Dr Mvula said her ministry will enhance sensitisation especially to the traditional leadership as people have a lot of misconceptions about the procedure.

She said some women think the procedure is very painful and instruments used are big which can damage the intestines hence the need to enhance sensitisation in communities.

The First Republican President commended the youth led organisation for having planned to plant 100 Mukula trees at the plots of both the living and departed Presidents.

He pointed out that it was encouraging that an idea of Mukula tree planting has been born domestically at a time when people grabble with indiscriminate cutting of the specie.

And Mukula Forever Organisation Director Mubanga Vwalika explained that the donation of 100 Mukula sub-lings to the First Head of State was part of celebrating his 97th birthday.

The visibly amused Mr Vwalika said his organisation that has the presence in Lusaka, Muchinga and Copperbelt provinces has a target of planting 1 million trees this year.

Mr Vwalika explained that the 150 member environmentally oriented organisation will continue working with key stakeholders in the protection of nature in order to curb the deforestation in the country.

Media reminded of task ahead of polls

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has reminded the Zambian media of the mammoth task it has to perform ahead of the forthcoming general elections this year.

HRC Chief Investigations and Legal Services Officer Kims Banda said part of the task is ensuring that the free will of the people prevails in the 2021 elections.

Mr. Banda said this when he welcomed participants to a review and validation media workshop organized by the Human Rights Commission.

The workshop also looked at the election monitoring tool on the administration of the Public Order Act (POA) in Kabwe today.

Mr. Banda said it was the commission’s wish that the government provides security to those that genuinely seek the freedom of assembly.

“Those who preside over the affairs of the country only do so on the free will of the people. This entails people voting freely and in lateral sense,” he stated.

Nkana Queens benched, violent attacks condemned

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has provisionally suspended Nkana Queens Football Club from the league following violent incidents that occurred during the team’s match against Zambia Institute for Social Development last weekend.

FAZ General Secretary Adrian Kashala says FAZ has taken the drastic step in order to keep players and officials in check.

Kashala says the footage viewed, coupled with regulatory reports for the match, show some Nkana players and officials attacking match officials and a ball boy, a situation that has been highly condemned.

“We do not condone hooliganism at any level in the game and we will deal with it decisively. The suspension will remain in effect until the disciplinary process has been exhausted,” he says.

Kashala stated that violence at any level in the game must be weeded out as some of the aggressive activities in the footage border on matters beyond football.

He says football is a rule-based game, and everyone involved must at all times embrace fair play and respect the rules.

Nkana has been given up to May 13, 2021 to submit the names of the culprits as part of the disciplinary process.

This is according to a press statement issued to ZANIS by FAZ Communications Manager Sydney Mungala in Lusaka today.

Zambia, IMF again fail to agree on bail out terms, talks to continue

37

The Zambian government and the International Monetary Fund have again failed to agree on terms of an economic reform programme which would have seen the country accessing financial assistance from the Fund.

Since 2016, Zambia has signaled intentions to get back on the IMF programme but significant progress has never been achieved.

In separate statements issued Monday evening, both the IMF and Ministry of Finance acknowledged that talks will have to continue although significant progress in policy talks has been achieved.

They both agreed that they will continue policy discussions at the appropriate time to finalise the timeline for implementation of the agreed reform package for the adoption of the ECF-supported programme.

“A team from the Ministry of Finance of Zambia, led by the Minister of Finance Dr Bwalya Ng’andu, and an IMF delegation, led by Mr. David Robinson, continued discussions during April-May in a second virtual mission on a potential IMF programme in view of progressing Extended Credit Facility (ECF) discussions. The Ministry of Finance and the IMF have reached a broad agreement on the macroeconomic parameters, fiscal targets and policy objectives,” the Ministry of Finance said.

“Significant progress was made in detailing the policy reform agenda to restore public finance and debt sustainability, while at the same time securing Zambia’s development objectives, and ensuring social protection for the most vulnerable. It was jointly agreed that Zambia and the IMF will continue policy discussions at the appropriate time to finalise the timeline for implementation of the agreed reform package for the adoption of the ECF-supported programme,” it said.

“In the meantime, the broad agreement obtained on macroeconomic parameters and fiscal targets will allow the authorities to progress in the technical preparation of debt restructuring talks in the context of the Common Framework as well as with the commercial creditors.”

Minister of Finance, Dr Bwalya Ng’andu stated: “We thank the IMF for the productive engagement and look forward to continuing discussions on the policy package implementation to ensure Zambia’s return to growth and debt sustainability. The reform path is clear. We are committed to securing an IMF programme which would support Zambia’s structural reform efforts to strengthen our response to the shocks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and to ensure a solid foundation for a prompt and inclusive economic recovery.”

The Zambian authorities have since expressed their gratitude to the IMF for the constructive, fruitful and forthright engagement.

The IMF said in a statement that it’s mission has continued discussions with the authorities during April-May on their request for an Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

“Building on the earlier discussions in February-March, there was broad agreement on the macroeconomic framework. Notable progress was made in detailing the key policy measures to address the macroeconomic imbalances currently facing Zambia and to enable a return to sustained growth with enhanced fiscal space for social and development spending.”

It said, “The Zambian authorities reaffirmed their continued commitment to reforms. We look forward to continuing ECF discussions as key measures are taken. Staff express their gratitude to the Zambian authorities for the constructive, determined, and frank engagement.”
