The decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize annexation of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move which is contrary to the 1980 UN Security Council Resolution 478, is total madness,” Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba said in Kitwe on Thursday.

Sinkamba, who likened Trump to Judas Iscariot, added that as a declared Christian Nation, Zambia should demonstrate biblical vigilance by strongly condemning and rejecting the annexation of Jerusalem by Israel and chose to stand by the side of the oppressed people of Palestine and Jordan.

Commenting on Trump’s decision which was announced on Wednesday this week that the US has decided to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and that the American Embassy will soon be shifted from Tel Aviv, Sinkamba charged that so long as the UN 1980 Resolution remains in force, the annexation is null and void. He said no right thinking leader should have contemplated doing so in the first place, considering hundreds of thousands of deaths in the past in the region and great milestones attained so far to achieve peace.

Likening him to Judas, the Green Party leader said it is a pity Trump has decided to trade lives of Palestinians and Jordanians to serve personal interests and hopes that he will live to regret his betrayal.

“Trump’s betrayal on the UN Resolution is typically like that of Judas Iscariot. We hope he will follow the footprints of Judas whereby when Judas saw that Jesus was condemned following the betrayal, he was filled with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elder. We hope Trump will live to regret this betrayal one day his lifetime,” Sinkamba charged.

“It is a pity that President Trump has decided to trade lives of Palestinians and Jordanians for personal interests. Anyway, the comforting news to Christians is that this provocative move by President Trump has happened during the Advent Season when, we, the Christians, are invited to be vigilant. We hope that Zambia, as a declared Christian Nation, will demonstrate vigilance by strongly condemning and rejecting the decision to annex Jerusalem to Israel,” Sinkamba said

The Patriotic Front (PF) Copperbelt provincial leadership says the party is intact and still going strong in the province.

Copperbelt Provincial Chairman Stephen Kainga says contrary to assertions by the opposition, the Copperbelt was and will remain a stronghold of the ruling party.

Mr. Kainga said in a statement released to ZANIS in Ndola yesterday that it had come to their attention that there is panic among the opposition adding that lies had become their daily bread.

Mr. Kainga said as PF it was strange that some people wanted to continue to peddle lies to gain political mileage but pointed out that the Copperbelt province was still and would remain to be the bedroom of the ruling mighty PF.

He said the PF leadership in the province was aware that some people from the opposition had focused their energies to bring divisions to the party within the Copperbelt, but that they would not succeed.

He added that the PF leadership on the Copperbelt together with the Provincial Minister Bowman Lusambo have a good working relationship which has attracted more people to the party.

Mr. Kainga said rushing to the media did not solve anything saying the PF and its leader , President Edgar Lungu have always had an open door policy and would always listen to the concerns of the Zambian people, even if the concerns came from an individual.

He said the PF leadership on the Copperbelt was looking forward to positive engagements that would benefit all Zambians.

He however pointed out that the party knew that there were some people that were being used by the NDC and UPND to speak ill and create an impression that there were divisions on the Copperbelt.

He has since advised the NDC to tell their consultant Chishimba Kambwili to resign so that his popularity on the Copperbelt could be tested as he claimed.

Mysterious cattle disease breaks out in Chikankata

Some of the 14 recovered cattle after a police operation in Limulunga District

A mysterious cattle disease has broken out in Chikankata district in Southern province and has since claimed seven heads of cattle.

Chikankata District Veterinary Officer Dr Abraham Msoni has disclosed that his office has since dispatched a team of officers to verify the reported outbreak of the peculiar cattle disease which has so far claimed seven heads of cattle in Chikankata.

Dr Msoni told ZANIS yesterday in Chikankata that his officers are currently ascertaining the type of disease which has broken out in the district and further called on farmers to report cases of animal diseases on time so that their animals are attended to as quickly as possible.

One affected farmer talked to by the Zambia News and Information Services in Chikankata district yesterday, Josia Mweemba said he has lost two animals within a week.

Mr Mweemba said his animals just collapsed and within a short period, the animals lost their lives.

He wondered what type of disease this as it was not showing signs of the popular corridor disease popularly known as Denkete in Tonga.

And another farmer Phillip Choonya said the disease kills cattle quickly and has called on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock to immediately move in to prevent more animals from dying.

Mr Choonya said he has lost five animals within a period of two weeks and that quick efforts should be put in place by the Ministry so that the disease is contained.

2017 Budget performance was fair, observes Kabwe business body

The Kabwe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has described the performance of the 2017 national budget as fair based on the hostile exchange rates and reduction in copper prices among other factors.

KCCI Vice President, Thomas Muwowo, says the hostile exchange rates, reduction in copper prices and the upward adjustments of electricity tariffs made it difficult for companies to access goods and services.

Mr Muwowo says the 2017 national budget can be described as fair because of the so many challenges that the country grappled with, including hostile exchange rates, reduction of copper prices and electricity tariff increase among others.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kabwe today, Mr Muwowo said the low copper prices during the first half of 2017 affected the mining industry thereby disadvantaging the country in accessing goods and services.

He said the situation was worsened by slumping of the Kwacha against major world currencies with the hostile exchange rates adversely affecting economic activities of the country.

Mr Muwowo observed that the country was playing catch up when the Kwacha stabilised with the major currencies but was hit again when the fuel pump price was increased.

He also noted that the failure by financial lending institutions to reduce their interest rates despite the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) reducing the reserve rates made it difficult for companies to borrow.

He further observed that the 75 per cent increase by the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) was injurious on most companies, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs) and marketeers.

Mr Muwowo indicated that because of these setbacks most companies could not break even in 2017 and were operating at 30 per cent and as such the budget could not inspire the poor in society.

He complained that the farming fraternity in the country also suffered huge losses after the produce was sold at a reduced price despite some faming blacks being hit by the army worms.

However, Mr Muwowo nodded some improvement in a number of social sectors, citing health and education as areas where positive strides had been made.

He said the 2017 national budget saw the recruitment of health workers and teachers to beef up the manpower and improve service delivery at the facility level.

The KCCI vice president noted that more health facilities were constructed while others were upgraded to first level hospitals in the quest to enhance service delivery.

Mr Muwowo indicated that the same trend was evident in the Ministry of General Education where new schools had been built while some were upgraded.

He underpinned that these gains are very important because educated and healthy citizens are a unique ingredient for both social and economic growth of the country.

Mr Muwowo further observed that the social sector saw increased advocacy on gender issues, adding that many people now know the role of men and women in development.

Intermarket bank reopening welcome

Kabwe Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the re-opening and rebranding of the Intermarket Bank in Lusaka.

KCCI vice president, Thomas Muwowo, says the impact of the bank to the community will only be felt when clients start accessing funds from the institution at affordable rates.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kabwe, Mr Muwowo said the move to re-open the bank is welcome but urged the financial institution to come up with flexible terms and a package that will empower business communities.

Mr Muwowo, however, observed if a bank closes and re-opens, there is need to do a thorough diagnosis to avoid plunging clients into shockwaves of closure again.

Mr Muwowo appealed to the bank to support SMEs and marketeers financially without so much red tape attached.

EPP leader Chilufya Tayali has said that he will not apologise for telling the United Party for National Development(UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema that he is full of evil.

In a defiant response to the 48 hour ultimatum asking him to apologize and withdraw his recent statement that the UPND President is a Freemason, the EPP leader said that he was ready to go to court and tell the Judge the malice and evil of the UPND and its leader.

“I am therefore ready to go to court and tell the Judge the malice and evil of the UPND and HH, so that they can know that their way of doing politics is not acceptable. Our Country cannot be held at ransom by UPND and HH regardless of whatever power they may have. I will fight evil wherever it resides,” he wrote.

According to Mr Tayali’s facebook posts, Mr Hichilema supports all the evil that UPND cadres do in his name and he has never condemned the cadres for the evil they do because he is full of the same evil.

“UPND have actually engaged a batch of people to just scandalize their opponents. All they do is think of bad things to do or say about others. Look at how many people have been a victims of these online media, compromised journalists like Kaseba and cadres. The situation is almost out of control”, wrote the EPP leader.

“Anyone who opposes the UPND becomes a target of the arsenal of insults and scandalisation. Not even the President is spared from their malice. This is not acceptable”.

Mr Tayali also wondered why UPND members supported him when he allegedly defamed the Inspector General of Police Mr Kakoma Kanganja and yet when he attacks Mr Hichilema, it is no longer freedom of expression.

“..I did not defame Kanganja, and championed freedom of expression, why are you crying that I have defamed him [HH]. It is only freedom of expression when I tell off those in Govt, but if it is on HH then it is defamation – hypocrites,” Mr Tayali wrote.

Mr Tayali said that he intends to get an honorary LLB out of his performance in squeezing the UNPD leader about his evil acts adding that enough is enough, Mr Hichilema will have to answer his questions.

“I will get some young lawyers to help me with legal jargons, while I deal with the Masonry issues, yes, we will talk about that. I want him to tell us about Golfview Lodge (Prayer meeting place for the Masons) and when he was ordained as an elder, he better prepare his baptism as well, because I will need it, ” he added

“What was the connection of HH and Mazoka, you can fool many people but not all the time, let us go to court and talk about it in white and black, ” he said.

Zambia Under-20 coach Mumamba Numba says he is building a team to ensure Zambia will qualify and defend their U20 AFCON title.

Numba’s first competitive day on the job as Zambia U20 coach on Wednesday got off to a bad start when the defending COSAFA U20 Cup champions lost 2-0 to Uganda at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

But Numba said he is not under pressure with expectations high in the wake of his predecessor Beston Chambeshi’s 2016 COSAFA U20 and 2017 U20 AFCON triumphs.

Numba promoted half of his Under-17 team that won the 2017 COSAFA U17 Cup in Mauritius as part of the FAZ junior structures development programme.

“They did well at Under-17 level and we needed to give them chance so that we see which players are ready to play at this level,” Numba said.

“But as we go on and start prepare for the U20 AFCON qualifiers, we will try and fuse in a few more players.

“I am happy with their performance because it is good for the development of Zambian football. I think they needed to progress to the next level.”

Barclay’s Bank CEO Mizinga Melu

Barclays Bank Zambia Managing Director Mizinga Melu says the removal of subsidies by government has sparked economic growth in the country.

Mrs. Melu says removal of subsidies has also led to a reduction in inflation and interest rates on the market.

Speaking during a breakfast meeting with journalists in Lusaka, Mrs. Melu also noted that the positive partnership Barclays has enjoyed with government has led to positive results in the agriculture sector.

She said Barclays continues to work with government in areas such as input distribution under the Farmer Input Support Program -FISP- through the e-voucher system where it dealt with around 80-thousand cards.

Mrs. Melu said this demonstrates government’s support toward the sector.

She is also happy that government has started looking at various forms of crops in agriculture beyond maize such as cassava which has various benefits.

And Mrs. Melu said the bank performed well in 2017 introducing new products and registering growth in profits.

She has also revealed that the bank will soon be launching three new branches as part of its expansion program but will also be looking at supporting more of a digital platform.

ZANIS reports National Union of Public and Private Educators of Zambia ( NUPPEZ ) Central Province Chairperson, Godfrey Moonga, says teachers should refrain from girl-chid and teacher close relationships.

Meanwhile, Ngabwe District Education Board Secretary, Rodgers Chuulu, has also implored parents to take a leading role in educating the girl child.

World Bank cuts Zambia’s 2017 GDP growth forecast from 4.1% to 3.8

World Bank Country Manager Ina Ruthenberg explains on the book called Zambia Economic Brief shortly before the World Bank Launches of the tenth of Zambia Economic Brief at Pamondzi Hotel

The World Bank says Zambia’s economy will grow more slowly than expected, expanding 3.8 percent instead of the previous forecast of 4.1 percent.

The World Bank said in a statement today that this follows weak performances of the services, mining and construction sectors.

The bank has forecast growth of 4.3 percent in 2018 and 4.7 percent in 2019.

“There remains a need to look closely at ways to improve debt management to ensure that economic growth has sustainable foundations and that borrowed money is invested wisely to ensure inclusive growth,” the World Bank said.

“Economic recovery in Zambia has been subdued in 2017, despite a bumper harvest, improvements in the generation of electricity, and an easing of monetary policy. This follows weak performances of the services, mining, and construction sectors. Growth is forecast to improve only modestly to 3.8% in 2017— up from 3.6% last year—and to strengthen to 4.3% in 2018 and to 4.7% in 2019. The forecast assumes the government will continue implementing its economic reform program, Zambia Plus,” it said.

And in its 10th Economic Brief for Zambia, the World Bank notes that this year, Zambia took the new step of publishing a medium-term debt strategy, and opportunities to refine it and turn it into a rolling strategy, updated annually, can be pursued as it moves forward with it.

The brief titled “How Can Zambia borrow with Sorrow”, the World Bank proposes the strategy should not only guide a slowing down of the accumulation of debt, but should also shift the composition of it and manage the risks of the country’s debt portfolio.

The report says Zambia’s government should have an internal borrowing plan to use in pursuit of the objectives in the medium-term debt strategy. Countries all over the world borrow to finance their investment and development: Zambia is no different, and it has huge and immediate infrastructure needs.

The report notes that a little over 10 years after a major debt relief effort, the rapid accumulation of debt has once again put Zambia in the spotlight.

“Debt is an important source of development finance, and a key tool for eradicating poverty,” said Gregory Smith, World Bank Senior Economist. “The debt needs to be managed carefully and the proceeds of borrowing shrewdly invested,” he added.

The report says a new and more active approach to debt management is needed now that Zambia is tapping capital markets and has many sources of borrowing. This means implementing a well-crafted strategy to reduce the cost of borrowing, extend the terms, and diversify the sources of debt funding.  “There remains a need to look closely at ways to improve debt management to ensure that economic growth has sustainable foundations,” said the World Bank’s Country Manager for Zambia, Ina-Marlene Ruthenberg, “and that borrowed money is invested wisely to ensure inclusive growth.”
