CFAO Motors Zambia CEO Dino Bianchi CFAO mentioned that they are proud to be part of this important initiative to support young girls and help them get on the right track as they start their journey through life.

“Education is key to this, and I urge the Ministry of Education to invest further in schools and teachers so the whole nation will benefit from nurturing well-educated and productive girls who will contribute meaningfully to society and the economy. It is an exciting prospect that more corporates should recognise and support,” Dino Bianchi added

Meanwhile, ZANACO CEO Mukwandi Chibesakunda said that they are conversant that the fight against early marriages will take concerted efforts to ensure the attainment of the sustainable development goal of ending child marriage by 2030, adding that as a bank that places importance on gender parity, they will continue to support initiatives that ensure that girls and young women have access to equal opportunities in life.

CFAO and ZANACO will provide financial resources to World Vision Zambia, and World Vision will provide overall implementation and accountability for the projects.

Chingola-Kasumbalesa PPP Concession Agreement Inked

7

The Government of the Republic of Zambia has today signed the Concession Agreement for the Design, Financing, Building, Operation, Maintenance and Transfer of 35km of the mining transportation channel of the Chingola-Kasumbalesa using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) financing model.

Finance and National Planning Minister Hon. Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane signed on behalf of the Government and Road Development Agency (RDA) acting Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Grace Mutembo signed as head of the implementing Agency.

Director and Chief Executive Officer for Turbo-Ka-Chin Investment Consortium E. Shangfa was also part of the signatories.

The Concession Agreement has been signed with Messrs. Turbo-Ka-Chin Investment Consortium who have been conferred with the status of Concessionaire for the Chingola to Kasumbalesa road.

The event was witnessed by Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Hon. Eng. Charles Miliupi, Transport and Logistics Minister Hon. Frank Tayali, Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati and Mines and Minerals Development Minister Hon. Paul Kabuswe.

In his remarks, Hon. Eng. Charles Milupi said the transportation sector was critical to economic growth as it facilitated commerce and trade in goods and services, as well as people movement.

“In this regard, the Government has prioritized the development and maintenance of transportation and logistics infrastructure. As a result, in order to overcome the constraints imposed by limited financial resources, the new dawn Government intends to build or rehabilitate these high-traffic roads using the Public-Private Partnership financing model,” Hon. Eng. Milupi said.

He said this model is intended to relieve fiscal pressure by allowing the private sector to collaborate with the Government by investing in public infrastructure and receiving compensation in the form of toll fees for a set period of time.

” This financing model would in turn, improve the delivery of sustainable Public-Private Partnership projects for improved infrastructure development and service delivery. Furthermore, the development of a project like this will serve as a springboard for various youths on the Copperbelt, as it will result in the creation of many jobs in the project area during the construction period as well as the operation and maintenance phase,” he said.

Hon. Eng. Milupi said the goal of the project was to make it easier for traffic to move between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Among the notable features of the project would include the widening of the road from Chingola to Kasumbalesa, with the last 3km being finished off with a concrete paved dual carriageway. A toll plaza, two truck parks, and a type 2 weighbridge are other features.

Hon. Eng. Milupi reiterated Government’s commitment to constructing cutting-edge public infrastructure at the right price, quality, and timeline.

After a 2 year hiatus, Afropop Artist, Katongo, is back with a new song titled ‘Hold My Waist’

Katongo

After a 2 year hiatus, Afropop singer Katongo is back with a new song titled ‘Hold My Waist’. The song features Zambian rap superstar Jemax and is available for streaming and download on all digital platforms.

Katongo had this to say about the song, “When I came back to Zambia I had a single ready for release, however, I felt that it could do with a little extra flavour.  I had heard Jemax music and I liked his tone.  So I sent the track over to his manager whom I have known for quite some time. Jemax heard the track and liked it, so he jumped on.”

‘Hold My Waist’ is a sensual love song with a tropical island vibe.  The lyrics of the song are delicate but Jemax brings a rough edge to his verse which perfectly complements Katongo’s sultry vocals. The song is flirty and intimate and it also effortlessly sets the mood for all lovers.

She spoke about how the Covid-19 pandemic affected her career: “When Covid hit I was back in the UK.  We were on lockdown for quite a period of time but this helped push me to master recording my own music myself.  I got equipment and set up a home studio and I recorded all my vocals for my upcoming EP from my house.  I collaborated with producers via social media and email and sent files to my sound engineer for final editing, mixing, and mastering.  I used the restrictions as my time to work on my craft.  It all came together perfectly.  Aside from recording my project I constantly engaged with fans by posting online frequently and also pushed myself into brand influencing and had the opportunity to work with big brands such as Colgate and Carex without venturing far from home.”

Having been in the music industry for some time, Katongo explained the most significant lesson she has learned.

“Don’t be too humble!  There are so many talented people who are not known or struggle because they do not hype themselves up enough.  Sadly, a lot of the noise makers get attention even if their talent and content is lacking.  Super talents often get overlooked and rarely get the recognition they deserve because they fear being branded ‘conceited’.   Confidence is key! I wish someone had told me that from the start.”

Speaking on her upcoming EP, she explained that it was supposed to be released this year as it is complete and ready.  However, a few delays on the feature front have made her and her team decide that it’s too close to the end of the year to release the whole project.  It deserves a full push over a period of time.  Katongo’s EP is currently scheduled to be released in the first half of 2023

katongo

Katongo has previously released hit songs such as ‘Kiss of Life’ with Cactus Agony and ‘Tinofara’ with Slapdee.  Katongo was also crowned the winner of Best Female Newcomer at Kwacha Music Awards 2019 and is currently signed as a songwriter to UK based music publisher, Speegra.  Katongo plans to release an EP project early next year.

‘Hold My Waist’ is available on Spotify, Boomplay, Apple Music, YouTube and several other digital platforms.

UPND cadres in Kafue District want the removal of charismatic town Mayor Buumba Malambo

3

Ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres in Kafue District have staged a protest to advocate the removal of charismatic town Mayor Buumba Malambo.

The UPND cadres have accused Ms. Malambo and other people of illegally allocating land in Kafue Town.

They alleged that Ms. Malambo’s and his unscrupulous people have gone to the extent of demarcating land owned by private individuals as farms.

The cadres, mostly women clad in UPND regalia, on Monday morning chanted ati-Malambo slogans and said they don’t want the Kafue Mayor anymore.

“They are going into people’s farms to demarcate land. We aren’t afraid to speak out on these issues. They went to get people’s NRCs who are now crying just because they are PF lawyers. We don’t want bogus lawyers. We are going to die for our party. We don’t want to embarrass our President (Hakainde Hichilema). The President has vowed that he doesn’t want corruption. We removed the PF from power because of plot allocation illegality. It seems they stood on our UPND ticket with bad intentions. We don’t want that here in Kafue. Kelly out, Buumba out,” said a woman at the Council Offices in Kafue.

“Council isn’t a family affair. Suspend Kelly Buumba Malambo,” read some placards carried by protestors.

Meanwhile, Dr. Malambo has vowed not to resign following protests against her by UPND members.

In a facebook post, the Kafue Mayor Malambo said she stands for the people of Kafue and no one can stop her from working for the people who voted for her.

“The same group that fought former Kafue UPND Mayor Mr Thomas Zulu until he resigned and joined PF causing Kafue to go for Bye Elections which UPND then lost to PF have come back to fight me at Kafue Town Council and calling that I resign as Mayor for Kafue so that Kafue can have bye elections. In the 2021 elections when I was adopted the same group closed the UPND office and I had to do my adoption application under a tree but that did not stop me. When they saw that I was not scared and weak they organized themselves and raised an Independent Candidate to challenge me but all that went with the wind. The past months they have been sending armed thugs to my house as early as 03am harassing me and trailing my children and as a female politician I reported to the higher party office and the police because I wasn’t and am not safe. When they saw that the malice and insults didn’t not stop me from working they have gone now to disturb the operations of the Council questioning why I went to Kalukungu Market to give support to the marketeers,” Dr. Malambo stated.

She branded the protests against her as works of the enemies.

“They tried the same game when I was just a councilor to a point of sending armed thugs who broke into my house and clearing stated that they were sent and pointed out a gun in my Son’s Mouth who was just 6 months by then and threatened to rape and kill me but God in Heaven came down with force and scattered them. They have accused me of giving help in-terms of food ,clothes ,employment and scholarships to people they call PF and have accused me of having sold plots worth 100 Million, but I ask again is there a ministry that has that k100 Million for me a small girl from Magoba village to have that,” she said.

“This is a total fight on my work and integrity and a total violation of human rights coupled with malice and wanting so much a dent on my name just because i’m a female Mayor they call me “Stubborn”. Sorry to disappoint you, My Name is Dr Buumba Malambo and I stand for the people of Kafue and no one can stop me from working for the people who voted for me. If you think I will resign Ni Fimba Upoke. Will remain Mayor for the greater people of Kafue until 2026. Try next door,” Dr. Malambo wrote.

PF will not use under-hand methods to block any of the aspiring candidates-Chilangwa

PF Acting Secretary General Nickson Chilangwa says no under-hand methods to disadvantage any of our aspiring candidates will be entertained.

Mr Chilangwa vowed that the PF will hold an all inclusive general conference.

“We in the PF have started an all inclusive process towards the Extra Ordinary General Conference following the receiving of applications from Presidential hopefuls. I further wish to inform the general membership of the PF and the country at large that no under-hand methods to disadvantage any of our aspiring candidates will be entertained,” he stated.

“PF is PF and no other description will be entertained at least not under my watch,” he declared.

Mr Chilangwa added, “Please not that following the receiving of applications it remains my responsibility and mine alone to submit a report to the Central Committee after which the central committee will agree on rules of engagement and the campaign schedule by our Presidential candidates.”

He said this shall be announce as soon as the meeting is convened.

“No one is mandated to issue any statement on this process other my office, and please ignore every statement on this matter not coming from my office with the contempt it deserves,” he said.

“Enemies of PF are not happy that PF can attract such a big number of quality leaders to vie the PF top job. Please remain calm. If the SG has not said it then it is not true. I urge all our members and well wishers to focus and spend all the energy on the on-going by-elections campaigns for the rest of this week.”

Government reiterates support to footwear, leather goods design industry

0

The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises Development has reiterated its commitment to providing comprehensive support towards the growth of small and medium entrepreneurs in Zambia.

Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Permanent Secretary, Yvonne Mpundu, says this is because the government, through the eighth National Development Plan (8NDP) is pursuing a private sector-driven economic transformation.

Ms Mpundu was speaking when she officiated at the training of trainers in footwear and leather goods design, manufacturing craftsmanship, export readiness and transformative entrepreneurship workshop at Cooperative College in Lusaka.

She stressed the importance of working with organisations such as the Africa Leather and Leather Products Institute (ALLPI) among other stakeholders to prioritise the leather value chain to develop the economy.

Ms Mpundu said this is because the leather sector has the potential of enhancing economic inclusion and ensuring the participation of a wider spectrum of society, especially for women and the youth.

She acknowledged ALLPI’s collaboration with the government in accomplishing various activities which include training of artisans on industrial glove making, footwear designing and capacity building on cluster development and management.

“I believe this training programme has come at an opportune time as the government is implementing the eighth NDP, an economic blueprint guiding us towards the achievement of our national vision,” Ms Mpundu stated.

She noted that the leather sector is a quick-win industry which has helped some of the developed countries transform their economies.

The Permanent Secretary noted that Africa holds about a quarter of the global livestock population that constitutes the basis for leather industry development.

Ms Mpundu has therefore said Zambia has the potential to generate more revenue if value addition and linkages to the global value chain are enhanced.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Leather Industrial Association (ZALIA) said although the sector in Africa had many natural strengths, it risks missing out on opportunities to expand to global markets.

ZALIA chairperson, Mercy Mukupa, outlined some constraints to the growth of Zambia’s leather sector, including access to quality and quantity of hides at affordable prices.

Ms Mukupa said lack of access to affordable finance, machinery, raw materials and working capital for the SMEs is hampering the growth of the sector.

She however commended the government for proposing to modernise the TEVET institutions with state of art training equipment under the skills development fund in the 2023 proposed national budget.

Ms Mukupa said the measure will address the skills mismatch challenges in the Zambian economy.

Meanwhile, ALLPI footwear Consultant, Feraw Kebede, showcased the readily available machinery required in the manufacturing of leather shoes.

We’re Not Doing Enough To Absorb Young People Looking For Jobs -Musokotwane

18

Finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane says the biggest challenge the country has is how to create jobs.

During the 2023 post budget and national development symposium organised by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce on last week Wednesday, Dr Musokotwane said efforts by both local and international companies to create employment in the country are not enough hence the need for more investments.

“And from that budget statement, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, you have requested that I come to this meeting and exchange views with Chinese businesspeople. And I want to say that I’m very pleased to be here to exchange views with you. Because this is what we are doing anyway. Our government feels that the biggest challenge that we have as a country or the biggest challenge that we have is how to create the jobs. Jobs, jobs, jobs. That is challenge number one and we also know that the only way to provide more jobs for everyone is by attracting investments so that we have many companies operating in Zambia to create the jobs,” he said. “The government, yes, there are some jobs that we are creating like hiring more teachers, hiring more workers in the health services, hiring more policemen but there is a limit. The whole country cannot be policemen, cannot be teachers, cannot be nurses, cannot be immigration officials. Most of the jobs must come from the private sector. So, that’s the way we see things in this government. We are always ready to speak to the private sector, Zambian businesspeople, to encourage more private sector activities in the country.”

Dr Musokotwane thanked Chinese companies for many things that they are doing in the country “as they are raising the quality of the economy”.

He asked the private sector to do more.

“Also I want to tell you that please do even more because what we’re doing now, whether it is Zambian companies, whether it is Chinese companies, whether it’s companies from America or Europe, India, we are not yet doing enough to absorb the number of young people looking for jobs. We are not doing enough,” he noted. “Let me also say I’m very pleased with the activities of the Chinese businesspeople in Zambia. I was very pleasantly surprised at the last agriculture show. I went to the show and what I saw was very pleasing. I also learned that there’s a lot of things happening to produce building materials to replace the imports. Of course, some of you are producing cements. Some of you have seen some of the best furniture, whether you’re talking about chairs, tables, beds, I’ve seen some very nice things made of course by some of your companies using local timber. That is an example of value addition. So there are so many things that some of you are already doing in terms of value addition in the country. I want to congratulate you because you are raising the quality of economy. Thank you so much.”

Dr Musokotwane noted that the areas where the needed jobs can come from is from the private sector through investment.

“I was told today that there are some young people, they saw an advert from Zambia Revenue Authority for jobs. So jobs at ZRA [are for] 115, the number of applications [were] 10,000. Okay, there is something wrong with that. It tells you that there are not enough jobs. Number two, the jobs, most of the jobs should be in industry. That is what we see in every other country in the world. The jobs are in the industry and commerce. The jobs in government are few. So that is why I’m saying that we are not yet doing enough and we must do more to create the jobs, to create the skills, to improve the livelihoods of our people,” he said. “I encourage you, challenge you to do more to bring more investments in the country. We will openly welcome that because, that is what we want.”

Dr Musokotwane said the government intends to push down the inflation beyond five per cent as part of stabilising the country’s economy.

“The interest rates are still remain high. They need to come down. The confidence in the economy needs to be maintained. What I mean here is that the policy must be consistent. Not where today the policy is like this, tomorrow the policy is different. Next week the policy is different. That confuses everybody,” he said. “So, what we are waiting now for, having made this progress, is to get us to have now the memorandum of understanding signed by the official creditors that we are now arranging to negotiate the restructuring of the debt. That is something that is remaining and I’m encouraged by the Minister Counsellor to say ‘listen, engage with the representative on the Common Framework’ so that we can make progress. Thank you so much for that. And indeed, we are going to engage.”

Dr Musokotwane said the issue of debt should be seen as an opportunity for the country to encourage investment in the economy like the way other economies have done.

“…that’s what sometimes disaster tells you or teaches you to do. And we are determined to move away from this disaster of excessive debt to push the economy strong. So that we come out of a disaster into something that is even much better than what we ever did before. What is possible, if you are looking for a future, is to use Zambia as a stringboard for value addition to export. What is possible now is to use local raw materials in Zambia, add value and export so that you don’t depend on the government to give you a business. It is now business from private sector to private sector here in Zambia or abroad,” he said. “So the opportunities for using Zambia as a springboard, as a production centre for exports in the neighbourhood countries, is what we would like to see. This is what we would like to see.”

Dr Musokotwane called on businesses to engage the government of any laws that are hindering their operations.

“I know we are always saying obey the Zambian laws, but that does not mean that Zambian laws are always right. Which means there’s a possibility that sometimes our laws are a problem and if they are a problem, say so. For any businessperson, if certain laws are a problem, tell us so that if they are unreasonable, if they create problems for industry, we will listen and change them. Don’t feel shy if something is a problem. Say this thing is a problem. And if you make profits don’t feel shy…” urged Dr Musokotwane.

Chinese Embassy minister counsellor Dr Meng Hao said the imports that China gets from Zambia is six times more than what is exported to Zambia, which he said was an encouraging figure.

Investigations into alleged solicitations of a bribe commenced by a Zambia Traffic Officer Begins

5

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has commenced investigations into the alleged corrupt solicitation of a bribe from a mini bus driver by a named traffic police officer from central police station.

ACC Head of Corporate Communications officer Timothy Moono says the incident happened in Lusaka on Saturday in broad view of several members of the public.

Mr Moono notes that the named police officer removed his head dress and demanded for a bribe from the minibus driver to be put on his head dress.

In a statement made available to the media in Lusaka on Monday, the Head of Corporate Communications officer said an alert member of the public on witnessing the bizarre incident confronted the police officer who later fled.

” A concerned member of the public confronted the police officer and the bus driver at that point the police officer is alleged to have run away leaving behind the head dress with the bus driver, ” he said.

Mr. Moono has since sternly warned traffic police officers to desist from soliciting and collecting bribes as it will not hesitate to effect arrest should this ever occur.

He said the commission further warned motorist’s especially public transport drivers that they should equally ensure that their vehicles are road worthy at all times and resists the temptation of offering bribes to traffic police officers each time they commit a traffic offense.

Mr Moono further commended the alert and encouraged the members of the public to be reporting such matters adding that the commission will pursue this matter to its logical conclusion and anyone found wanting will be prosecuted.

Fuel price increased

33

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has increased the prices for petroleum products effective mid-night of Monday , October 31st 2022.

The new price for petrol is now costing k24.31 per litre from k22.74, low Sulphur Diesel is now at k27.38 from k26.16, Kerosene has been increased to k19.23 from k16.06 and Jet A-1 fuel has been increased to k21.78 from k20.69 , respectively.

ERB Board Chairperson, Reynolds Bowa announced the adjustment of the pump price of petroleum products and Jet fuel at a press briefing in Lusaka on Monday.

” The world supply is expected to fall as a result of pending European Union ban on Russian crude and oil products and the output cut from the OPEC countries of 2 million per barrel per day, ” Mr Bowa said.

He noted that on the local front, the gradual depreciation of the kwacha against the United States dollars is expected to hold in the medium to short term in view of the expected global recession and in the interest rates especially in western countries.

He also explained that depreciation in the Zambian kwacha has necessitate the increase in the petroleum products and Jet fuel.

Mr Bowa added that during the period under review, the Zambian kwacha depreciated month on month from k15.60 per dollar in September to k15.93 per dollar in October, 2022.

“These are some of the factors which have necessitated the changes in pump prices for petroleum products and Jet fuel among others,” he said.

WEEKEND SCORECARD: Mutapa Relishing Egypt U23 Showdown

1

Zambia U23 coach Osward Mutapa is relishing their 2023 U23 AFCON qualifier decider against the African U23 champions Egypt.

The two teams meet next March in a final round qualifier that will see Zambia play Egypt away in the first leg at a date to be announced.

“What is important is preparation. It’s not necessarily about playing teams of the same type of football as Egypt but playing high-profile teams that will help us build a strong team,” Mutapa said.
