FAZ Mourns HANIF Adams

The Football Association of Zambia is saddened to learn of the death of veteran administrator Hanif Adams.
Mr. Adams died this afternoon(8th September) after a long battle with cancer. He was aged 70.

FAZ president Andrew Kamanga says the death of Mr. Adams has robbed the game of a great resource.

“On behalf of my executive and the entire football community, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the Adams family for the passing of Hanif. We join them in mourning this great sports personality whose contribution to the game is immeasurable,” says Kamanga.

“Mr. Adams left a permanent footprint on the Zambian football landscape with his lifelong proprietorship of Lusaka Dynamos and other community projects. Hanif served in various committees in football and in FAZ and rendered his expertise to the game wholeheartedly.”

“As a life member of FAZ, he was among the seniors that we drew counsel from in the management of our game.”
Mr. Adams’ funeral prayer will take place at the Omar Mosque in Kamwala at 20:30 hours with burying coming on soon after.

Trade Expert , Explains Significance Of Re-activating Ageing TAZARA By China

Trade Expert Gilbert Nkamba and Chief Chitimbwa Luswempo 11th of the Lungu people of Northern Province have welcomed the revitalization of the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority ( TAZARA) saying the move will improve trade between the two countries and ultimately the entire southern region.

Mr Nkamba says the One Billion United States dollars investment by the Chinese company to revitalize TAZARA will enhance trade in the North- South Corridor among Southern African Countries, Zambia and Countries in the Great Lakes Region.

Mr Nkamba has told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today that TAZARA is a strategic asset for Tanzania and Zambia in the nexus of global supply chain, providing transportation of assorted goods, especially mineral resources and agriculture products from Zambia and other countries in the region.

He added that revitalizing TAZARA will lower the cost of doing business, particularly the freight component.
Mr Nkamba said TAZARA will also open up other nodes of transport along the route, with the net effect of more facilitation in the passage of goods to the port of Dar-es-salaam.

“Revitalizing of TAZARA will incentivise foreign direct investment in heavy machinery which is key to boosting regional manufacturing and industrialisation. Inevitably, trade between Zambia and Tanzania will boom, and as gross domestic product increases, the countries in this region will witness accelerated economic growth,” said Mr Nkamba.

He added that beneficiary governments to the railway should ride on this revitalization to develop border infrastructure in order to make import processing very efficient, as a way of harmonising border clearance with affordable rail freight in a bid to fortify trade facilitation gains.

And Chief Chitimbwa said the One Billion United States dollars investment into TAZARA by the Chinese company, will revamp the railway company and help it regain its past glory.

In a separate interview with ZANIS in Lusaka, Chief Chitimbwa commended President Hakainde Hichilema and his Tanzanian counterpart Samia Suluhu Hassan for their commitment to revamp and improve the operations of TAZARA.
Chief Chitimbwa also paid glowing tributes to Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Government for coming to the aid of the two countries through an injection of more funds to rehabilitate and revamp the operations of TAZARA.

On Wednesday September 4, Chinese President Xi, Zambian President Hichilema and his Tanzanian counterpart Hassan, witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Railway Construction Limited (CRCC) for the revitalisation of TAZARA.

This was done on the sidelines of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held from 4th to 6th September under the theme “Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future.”

The revatalisation of TAZARA aims at improving the rail-sea transportation between Zambia and Tanzania.
The signed MoU will see the refurbishing of the 1,860 kms (1,156 mile) TAZARA railway.

The single-track TAZARA railway was built between 1970 and 1975 through an interest-free loan from China, offering a cargo transport route from Zambia’s copper and cobalt mines to the sea on Tanzania’s coast that bypasses South Africa and the former state of Rhodesia.

The multi-year project involved the construction of two dozen tunnels and hundreds of bridges by tens of thousands of Chinese and African workers.

“China is willing to take this summit as an opportunity to make new progress in the revitalisation of the Tanzania-Zambia railway, cooperate to improve the rail-sea intermodal transport network in East Africa, and build Tanzania into a demonstration zone for deepening high-quality China-Africa Belt and Road cooperation,” said President Xi during the signing ceremony.

Chief Chitimbwa said that he is happy that President Hichilema and his Tanzanian counterpart, Hassan, met in China for a good cause.

“They did a great job advocating the assistance in revitalizing TAZARA,” said Chief Chitimbwa.

The traditional leader described the gesture by the Chinese government to pump in more money into TAZARA as the best gift for Zambia as the two celebrate 60 years of bilateral relations.
“This is a good gift for Zambia which has come at the right time as Zambia and China celebrate 60 years of friendship,” said Chief Chitimbwa.

Chief Chitimbwa said the investment will now help to revamp the rail line between the two countries adding that TAZARA has not been performing well and needed more capital to rehabilitate its infrastructure so as to improve its operations.

The traditional leader said with rehabilitated infrastructure, TAZARA will be able to increase the volume of cargo to the port of Dar-es-salaam and also bring in more cargo for the countries in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) as well as the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
He added that improving the infrastructure of TAZARA is also a major boost to the Lobito Corridor running from Angola to Zambia through the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“It is kudos to our President for his commitment to improve our country’s economy and for coming up with this initiative of revamping the operations of TAZARA which almost went down to its knees,” said Chief
He says that TAZARA helps in transportation of goods from Tanzania and vice versa adding that the railway system equally helps our roads to be intact when heavy goods are being transported by rail.

“Many are the times that trucks carry heavy goods that can be delivered through the rail line which in turn destroy our roads. Great North Road has been destroyed because of the same,” added Chief Chitimbwa.

The rail line will equally help many people to travel safely from New Kapiri Mposhi to Dar -es- salaam and vice versa because of its comfort.

And Chief Chitimbwa has appealed to President Hichilema to do something on the Zambia Railways Limited saying the national railway company also plays a vital role in terms of transportation and is a strategic partner in the Lobito Corridor arrangement.
He said improving the operations of the Zambia Railways Limited will surely boost the country’s economy.

Friend, Zacchaeus was the despised chief tax collector in the region, known for cheating people and called a notorious sinner. Yet when Jesus could have spent time with any of the local religious leaders, He chose Zacchaeus, which they found disgusting. Religion says, “He’s too bad. He’s scum. Stay away.” Sometimes religion portrays an image of God where you can’t measure up, and it uses guilt and your feelings of unworthiness to try to get you to live right. But God says, “I gladly welcome Zacchaeus. What he has done does not cancel out My mercy.”

When Zacchaeus came to understand that God loved him unconditionally, even when he had made mistakes, he decided to change his ways and salvation came to him. Sometimes we think that if we tell people all they’re doing wrong and make them feel guilty, they’ll change. But condemnation doesn’t make them do better. It is when they hear about a God who shows mercy when they deserve judgment that they’ll change. The Scripture says, “It’s the goodness of God that leads to repentance.”

Local Content Bill Progress Cheers Governance expert

Copperbelt based governance expert Peter Mulenga has hailed the progress made by the Government in the pending enactment of the Mining Local Content bill into law.

Mines Minister Paul Kabuswe during the 2024 Mining Local Content Conference and Expo revealed that the formulation of the Mining Local Content Bill is at 90 percent completion with the aim of increasing the participation of local businesses in the mining sector.

Mr. Mulenga said it was gratifying that the government has made significant strides in formulating the bill which will help to enhance the involvement of local businesses in the mining industry.

“The statement by Honourable Paul Kabuswe, the Minister of Mines, saying that the country has reached 90 percent in coming up with a local content bill is exciting. This is a significant milestone if 90 percent approval has been achieved,” he said.

Speaking to Radio Icengelo News, Mr. Mulenga expressed optimism that the Mining Local Content Bill will ensure that the government increases its revenue collection as more local entities will be involved in various mining operations.

“This will enhance local businesses participation and ensure that Zambia benefits more from its resources and economic activities. This law when enacted will help with job creation and prioritizing local suppliers and contractors who will create jobs for local people,” he added.

“Even the dollar -kwacha issue we are struggling with this bill is the solution. It will enhance revenue retention which the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) is seeking. The bill will foster national pride and self-reliance. All these issues would be realised in a short period of time,” Mr. Mulenga said.

Luanshya Lawyer Zevyanji Sinkala Drills Boreholes to Alleviate Water Crisis in Public Institutions

Luanshya lawyer Zevyanji Sinkala has come to the aid of Luanshya residents faced with erratic water supply, by drilling some water boreholes in some public institutions to alleviate the water problem in the district.

Thomson District Hospital is just one of the many public and community centers set to benefit from this initiative, which focuses on providing essential services where they are most needed.

“We’re grateful for the government’s efforts to improve healthcare, particularly through initiatives like the expanded Constituency Development Fund,” Sinkala said.
Mr Sinkala pointed out that the erratic water supply in the constituency has been a major issue, and the installation of 10 boreholes, complete with tank stands, 10,000-liter water tanks, pumps, and solar panels, will ensure a steady water supply,” Mr Sinkala said.

Mr Sinkala also emphasized the importance of running water, especially during the rainy season when health facilities and schools face significant health challenges.
He also urged the community to take care of the resources, as they are crucial for providing clean and safe water.

Mr Sinkala also plans to present a strong case to the Luanshya Constituency Development Fund( CDF) Committee, advocating for the urgent needs of the people.
He says he aims to raise awareness so that everyone in Luanshya understands how to benefit from these funds.

“The CDF is a game changer,” he said. “It’s designed to bring development to your doorstep, and it’s for everyone. Whether you can read or write, whether you’re sighted or not, whether you’re able-bodied or differently abled—CDF is for you. Falling Mangoes in American Elections

Fall is approaching, so is the apple season in America. My neighbor has a tall apple tree whose numerous beautiful fruits are hanging. I start with casually picking the low hanging fruit. Deep into the season when most of the apples become ripe, I stand under the tree. Many ripe apples fall to the ground just on their own. I do not have to make any effort at all besides walking with my basket and picking up the beautiful ripe apples. This is actually true for all fully ripening fruit; wild fruits such as Masuku and mbula, peaches, apricots, oranges, and especially mangoes. I have stood under mango trees all my life in Zambia and have seen tons of beautiful delicious mangoes almost hit my head when they are very ripe.

As the Presidential election campaign has gotten very heated here in America, there are established ingrained policy arguments that responsible voters have to mull over; which candidate is better at handling immigration and the problems of illegal migrants at the Southern border with Mexico, crime, abortion, Ukraine aid, Israel/Gaza war, Taxes, health care, climate, and the economy. All presidents benefit from the falling ripe mangoes syndrome. As soon as each of the 46 previous American Presidents elect had completed his inauguration, they could have entered the White House (which is the American State House) and just laid down on the couch in the oval office for four years and done nothing.

If the economy thrives, they will be called economic geniuses even if they did not even lift their smallest finger to fix the economy. If the economy implodes while the President is laying down on the oval office couch, the blame will even be louder. In American politics, we generally accept these unearned advantages and disadvantages of the economy for who is occupying the Presidency.

When pollsters ask voters who they trust to handle the economy better, they consistently choose Trump over Kamala Harris. It is well understood that Harris has never been President before. What the American voters should be asking is besides the benefit of the falling ripe apples or mangoes syndrome, what did Trump specifically actually do that might have caused the economy to improve during his 4 years in office?

The benefit of the Trump tax cuts went to the richest 1% of the population. He did not have to fight and sweat to get the tax cut legislation through Congress because he and his rich class friends were going to directly benefit from the legislation. The middle and working class did not benefit much. Instead, 2.7 million jobs were lost during the Trump presidency. The economic growth rate was -2.2%. He added 7 trillion dollars to the national debt mainly because of the massive tax cut for the rich.

His handling of the Covin pandemic was a disaster and a tragedy as there was chaos and just lack of a steady hand and effective leadership that should have been grounded in reality during an emergency of such national magnitude. Bob Woodward’s interview with Trump during the early months of 2021 revealed Trump had deer, insa, nyiska in the car headlights reaction, he shrunk, and was clueless in the face of the oncoming deadly pandemic. Over one million Americans died. What should amaze you and me is why anyone in their right mind would still want to vote this man back to being President again. He only talks big.

What I suspect is that when we humans experience a great tragedy that was the Covid 19 trauma and collapsed economy, our minds cannot handle the difficult memories of the trauma. Instead, we focus on some of the pleasant memories however small those memories might have been. We experience psychological amnesia. Hence the rosy opinions of some of the (Make America Great Again) MAGA American political supporters and others who say the country was economically doing great during Trump’s presidency and supermarket prices and inflation were low.

Beyond taking advantage of the falling ripe apples syndrome about the economy, Trump also takes advantage of the so-called low information voter which may be a large swath of the national American population. Unless you are a talking head political pundit, news nerd or politics junkie, you will not follow the numerous Trump lies and get into the weeds of fact checking the lies. You will have no ability or time to fact check the prolific number of false statements he makes every day. Nine years since 2015, most Americans have to realize that whenever Trump stands before a microphone now and moves his lips, he is telling lies. Lies appear unfortunately for the country to be his oxygen which gives him political life.

If he won and he implemented his dangerous Project 2025, we will not be living in the America of peace and tranquility that we have known.

President Hichilema Concludes Successful Diplomatic Mission in China

President Hakainde Hichilema returned to Zambia after a successful diplomatic mission in China, where he attended the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). During his visit, President Hichilema engaged in a series of high-level meetings aimed at addressing Zambia’s energy challenges, increasing investment, and strengthening bilateral ties with China.

President Hichilema’s mission began in Xi’an City, where he met with representatives of LONGi Green Energy Technology Company, a leading Chinese solar company. The discussions focused on securing both short- and long-term solutions to Zambia’s energy deficit, with the company expressing its willingness to collaborate on Zambia’s energy mix program.

In Beijing, the President participated in several bilateral meetings with Chinese companies. He met with officials from the China Non-Ferrous Mining Corporation (CNMC) and the China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC), where both companies reaffirmed their commitment to expanding investments in Zambia. CNMC, in particular, promised to expedite the operationalization of the 28 Shaft in Luanshya by installing additional pumps to speed up water removal from the mine.

On the diplomatic front, President Hichilema held a crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, reaffirming the long-standing cooperation between Zambia and China. The two leaders discussed increasing economic activity between their countries, with President Hichilema expressing gratitude for China’s support in various sectors, including energy, infrastructure, and mining. The discussions also highlighted China’s role in global peace and security, which the Zambian leader emphasized as essential for advancing economic development.

One of the key moments of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between China Railway Construction Limited and Zambia and Tanzania for the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA). This move aims to enhance regional trade and business. Additionally, President Hichilema and Kenyan President William Ruto met to discuss shared challenges, particularly those related to climate change, and explored strategies for building resilience across Africa.

Zambia’s energy sector received a significant boost during the visit with the signing of three agreements between ZESCO and Power China, targeting the diversification of the country’s energy sources. The agreements include plans for rooftop solar projects and solar photovoltaic plants at Kariba North and Kafue Gorge Lower. Another MoU was signed between ZESCO and China Datang Corporation, one of China’s largest energy suppliers, to diversify Zambia’s energy mix away from hydroelectricity.

President Hichilema’s visit also included a meeting with Liu Jiachao, the Chinese Minister of International Department, where they discussed China’s 10-point partnership plan with Africa and China’s continued support for Zambia’s infrastructure development and debt restructuring under the G20 framework.

As the summit came to a close, President Hichilema expressed satisfaction with the outcomes, underscoring the importance of Zambia’s partnerships with China in driving economic growth and energy security. He has since returned to Zambia and thanked Zambians for their support and reaffirmed the UPND government’s commitment to solving the country’s energy crisis.

Bravery Beyond Duty: How Sergeant Hachambwa Saved a Life in South Sudan

In a foreign country amidst conflict, where echoes of gunfire and uncertainty fill the air, a beacon of hope emerged. Meet Sergeant Passina Moono Hachambwa, a brave and dedicated Zambia Police Officer who went beyond her call of duty to help a desperate pregnant woman deliver.

Without midwifery qualifications, Sergeant Hachambwa, while on her peacekeeping mission in Malakal, Upper Nile State, South Sudan, summoned her inner courage to perform midwifery work on a pregnant woman—work she had never undertaken in her entire life. This was after an assessment revealed that either the baby, the mother, or both could be endangered if the arrival of an ambulance was further delayed.

Born in 1985 in Ndola, a town in the Copperbelt Province, and a mother of three vibrant girls, Sergeant Hachambwa joined the Zambia Police Service as a recruit constable in 2011 at the Zambia Police Training College in Lilayi. She was initially deployed to Chingola Central Police Station on the Copperbelt before being transferred to Chiwempala Police Station. She was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2021.

In 2022, Sergeant Hachambwa underwent the Selection Assistance and Assessment Team (SAAT) process and was among the qualified police officers selected and deployed to South Sudan under the United Nations Peacekeeping mission as Individual Police Officers (IPOs).

While far from home, Hachambwa remained passionate about advocating for peace and human rights. She believes that peace at home should be peace everywhere.Her duties in the mission included protecting civilians from threats of physical violence, monitoring and reporting abuses, supporting the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement, conducting patrols, and performing static beat duties.

On 13th September 2023, Hachambwa’s ability to prove her worth was put to the test. While on her static beat at Juliet Gate, she was alerted to an urgent situation: a woman in labour was found in the nearby bushes. In response, she swiftly instructed some of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) to bring the expectant mother to the gate.

The woman was engulfed in pain and could neither walk nor talk but only cry. Hachambwa, together with her counterparts, secured a nearby container for privacy while the normal procedures of reporting and contacting the ambulance were being followed. Unfortunately, the ambulance was significantly delayed.

Recognizing the critical nature of the situation, Hachambwa, a mother of three, with only life-saving skills acquired from Lilayi, assessed the situation and realized the woman would give birth before the ambulance arrived.

Without hesitation, she set aside concerns about the consequences of failed maternity work. Her mind was focused on saving a life, so she instructed one of the IDPs nearby to buy a razor blade for the impending childbirth. She made the woman lay properly and carefully assisted her in delivering a seemingly healthy baby boy.

Twenty minutes later, the long-awaited ambulance arrived and transported both the mother and her newborn baby to the medical facility for further care.

This heartwarming tale of compassion and courage is a testament to the power of humanity in the darkest of times.

Like wildfire, the news spread, and the United Nations Department of Peace Operations Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, from Headquarters in New York, heard of it. He immediately sent a message of appreciation to Hachambwa for her compassion and bravery in assisting the safe birth of a child and her tireless efforts in coordinating with ambulance services.

“Your actions exemplify the essence of humanity. They saved lives and embodied the core values of United Nations Peacekeeping. I applaud your extraordinary commitment, which undoubtedly enhanced the confidence of the local community,” Mr. Lacroix stated in his congratulatory message.

Back home, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Graphel Musamba, expressed admiration for the confidence and decisiveness shown by Sergeant Hachambwa. The Police Chief said it was gratifying to note that Zambia Police officers continue to raise the Zambian flag high in missions abroad. Mr. Musamba added that women in peacekeeping missions bring a unique layer to the operation and that the police command is striving to increase the number of individual police officers in peacekeeping missions, with women playing a crucial role.

Zambia Expected to Have Sufficient Rainfall

Government has announced that the country is expected to have sufficient rainfall in the 2024/2025 farming season, with most parts of the country expected to have normal to above normal rainfall.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, says the rain forecast for this year’s farming season as compiled by the Meteorological Department indicates an improved rainfall pattern from last year with flush floods expected in flood prone areas.

Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Mposha disclosed that normal to below normal rainfall, with some dry spells is expected in the North and Eastern parts of the country.

He added that delayed onset of rains by mid-December is expected over the extreme Northern and Eastern parts affecting Luangwa, Chirundu, Sinazongwe and Gwembe Districts.

Mr. Mposha highlighted that the forecasted above normal rainfall is likely to bring about agricultural pests and diseases and advised farmers to prepare adequately for them.

The Minister has since made an appeal to the civil society, church and the general citizenry to ensure that water ways and drainage systems are clear to avoid flooding and outbreak of fungal and water borne diseases such as Cholera and Dysentery.

Mr. Mposha has further appealed to the public to embrace alternative sources of energy for cooking and lighting to reduce the heavy dependency on hydro power generation.

He assured that government is putting in place measures to ensure that the solutions are easily accessible by Zambians.

Mr Mposha has however, reminded the farmers of the unpredictability of climate change and advised them to prepare for any changes to the forecast by constantly updating themselves and seeking advice from relevant ministries.

Witness Testifies in Court About Attempts to Influence Withdrawal in Pastor Rape Case

A key witness in the ongoing rape trial of Pastor John Nundwe, popularly known as John General, testified today that there were attempts to pressure the alleged victim to withdraw the case. Pastor Nundwe, who leads Miracles Impact Ministries International, is accused of raping a female member of his congregation.

The witness, testifying before Lusaka Magistrate Amy Masoja, disclosed that efforts were made to convince the victim, a Lusaka woman, to drop the charges against the pastor. The rape charge is contrary to sections 132 and 133 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

During the proceedings, the witness also refuted claims that he had demanded 800,000 Kwacha from the accused as a settlement to resolve the matter outside the courtroom.

This revelation emerged during cross-examination when defense lawyer Yokonia Daka presented letters allegedly written by the witness and his wife, seeking to withdraw the case. The victim’s husband, who was on the witness stand, denied that these letters were intended as part of any financial settlement with the accused.

The trial continues as the court seeks to uncover the full details surrounding the case.

Kitwe Man Attacked by Stray Dogs, Sustains Serious Injuries

A 32-year-old man from Kitwe, identified as Goodson Mwape, is recovering from serious injuries after being attacked by three stray dogs at his workplace in Garneton Township.

The incident occurred at Egg City Company, where Mr. Mwape was reporting for duty in the morning. The dogs, which had strayed into the company premises, attacked him, leaving him with deep cuts on his legs and stomach.

A ZNBC News crew arrived at the scene shortly after the attack and found Mr. Mwape bleeding heavily from his legs. He was quickly rushed to Kitwe Teaching Hospital, where medical staff provided emergency treatment. Doctors at the hospital have since described his condition as stable, with Kitwe Teaching Hospital Surgeon Dr. Kelly Sakukonga noting that Mr. Mwape’s condition is improving.

“We are monitoring his recovery closely, and he is responding well to treatment,” said Dr. Sakukonga.

Meanwhile, Mwale Sekelani, a community spokesperson, expressed concern over the safety of residents, stating that the presence of unsecured dogs in the area has instilled fear in the local population.

“People are scared because these dogs are roaming freely, and we don’t know if they’ll attack again,” Sekelani said.

Kitwe District Livestock Officer Chindu Simwinga confirmed that the three dogs have been taken into animal welfare custody. He urged dog owners to follow proper procedures for keeping and securing potentially dangerous animals to avoid such incidents in the future.

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant as investigations continue into how the dogs came to be roaming freely in the township.

Digital COMESA Yellow Card Launched

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary, Lillian Bwalya says the launch of the digital COMESA yellow card will be crucial in facilitating for seamless cross border movement, which will in turn accelerate economic activities within the COMESA region.

Ms Bwalya observes that the newly launched digital yellow card is expected to enhance accessibility and convenience to motorists to obtain and renew their insurance coverage from the comfort of their homes.
Speaking during the launch of the digital yellow card application at COMESA Secretariat in Lusaka, Ms Bwalya said the move to digital platforms will promote efficiency and reduce the risk of fraud and counterfeit documents in the region.

She explained that the digital yellow card will enable real-time data sharing among COMESA member states, thereby facilitating quicker and more accurate verification of insurance coverage at border posts.

Ms Bwalya added that the application will also contribute to broader efforts to the environment and promote sustainable practices within the region.

“This Launch is about building a more connected and integrated Africa and aligns with our vision of a seamless trade and cooperation, dismantling barriers to economic growth through technology,” she said.
She observed that the digital yellow card application launch is a step closer to realising the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA).

And COMESA yellow card Council Bureaux Chief Executive Officer, Calven Mutyavaviri said the launch signifies a huge milestone to enhance the operations of COMESA and that it will facilitate smooth movement of motorists in the region.

He explained that the COMESA digital yellow card application is a cornerstone of regional integration as it will bring an end to manual verification of the documents which is time consuming.

Acting Managing Director ZSIC General Insurance limited, Sylvia Nguluwe said that insurance plays an effective role in development and, that the digital yellow card will have a positive impact on insurance of regional integration.

She noted that the digital yellow card application will provide support to transporters who traverse the region as they will now conduct business with a piece of mind.

Earlier, Inspector General of police Gravel Musamba, in a speech read on his behalf by Zambia Police Chief traffic officer, Justine Mulele said the launch of the digital yellow card marks a new era as it will facilitate smooth movement of road users.

He reiterated ZP’s commitment to ensure full implementation of the digital yellow card because it will help in removing fraud among other illegal activities in the region.

HPCZ suspends October -November 2024 Professional Licensure Examinations

The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has announced the suspension of the October-November 2024 Professional Licensure Examinations (LEX) following a court ruling on September 4, 2024.

Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Fastone Goma told ZANIS in a statement that the Kitwe High Court granted an injunction in a case involving Makunko Nsalange and 13 other medical graduates.

Prof Goma said the plaintiffs challenged HPCZ’s authority to administer the LEX after issues arose from the transposition of February-March 2024 LEX results.

“The court’s decision directs us not to proceed with the upcoming examinations,” Prof. Goma stated.
He added that the process for LEX applications has also been halted, and applicants will be guided on how to address any payments made.

This suspension impacts fresh medical graduates awaiting registration to practice in Zambia.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and are committed to resolving the matter as quickly as possible,” Prof. Goma said.

He said the HPCZ remains dedicated to upholding quality assurance processes as entrusted by the Ministry of Health and will provide further updates as the situation develops.

The highly anticipated 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) officially commenced yesterday, gathering heads of state and government officials from across Africa and China. Among the distinguished attendees was President Hakainde Hichilema , who joined other leaders in celebrating the event that aims to strengthen the long-standing ties between China and Africa.

In his address, President Hichilema highlighted the historical partnership between Africa and China, a relationship that has spanned decades, stretching back to Africa’s pre-independence era. “During some of our continent’s most challenging times, China extended a helping hand to Africa when it was neither popular nor expected,” President Hichilema said.

The Zambian leader reflected on Zambia’s profound connection with China, dating back to the early days of Zambia’s independence. He paid tribute to Zambia’s Founding President, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, and Tanzania’s President Dr. Mwalimu Nyerere, who forged a groundbreaking partnership with China that paved the way for future collaborations. This historic relationship, epitomized by projects such as the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA), became a model for Africa-China cooperation and has inspired the entire continent.

The 2024 FOCAC Summit seeks to build on this rich history by fostering a mutually beneficial, strategic partnership between Africa and China. For far too long, television stations have attempted to incorporate sign language interpreters onto their screens, but the effort has often fallen short of being truly inclusive. The size of the screen allocated to sign language interpreters is disproportionately small compared to the wide screen view intended for able-bodied individuals, and this inequality cannot be ignored.

Take, for example, the provision for sign language interpreters during news broadcasts on channels like ZNBC. While it’s commendable that efforts are made to include interpreters, the small screen space allotted to them is insufficient. It’s time we recognize that sign language requires a clear and unobstructed view for effective communication to take place.

One solution to address this issue is to advocate for the expansion of the screen space dedicated to sign language interpreters on national broadcasters like ZNBC. By enlarging the screen for interpreters, we demonstrate empathy and a commitment to inclusivity.

Additionally, I propose that the Independent Broadcasting Authority issue a directive to all TV stations to provide dual streams for news broadcasts. This means while the main news is streamed on channels like TV 1, a parallel broadcast with a wider screen for the sign language interpreter should be available on channels like TV 3 or TV 2. Sign language communication relies heavily on visual cues, and it’s imperative that we prioritize accessibility for all viewers.

Moreover, the Independent Broadcasting Authority should mandate that all news stations publish their content in written form on their websites or social media platforms. This ensures that individuals with hearing impairments have equal access to information and news updates. By making news content readily available in written form, we bridge the gap in accessibility and empower all citizens to stay informed.

Furthermore, it’s crucial to consider the needs of visually impaired citizens. A directive from the Independent Broadcasting Authority to broadcast main news programs on radio channels like Radio 2 would provide essential information to those with visual impairments. Inclusivity should extend to all forms of media, and no citizen should be left behind due to their disabilities.

We must acknowledge that TV levy does not discriminate, and it’s our responsibility as a society to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their abilities, have equal access to information and news. It’s time for a change—a change that prioritizes inclusivity and consideration for all members of society.

As Advocate General and Proud Member of Zambian Society, I urge TV stations and regulatory bodies to take proactive steps towards creating a more inclusive media landscape. Let’s work together to ensure that no citizen is left behind in the digital age. Lastly taking another perspective from a policy point of view and for information purposes, the Zambia News and Information Service should be directed by the Independent Broadcasting Authority to work closely with the Zambia Postal Service (Post Offices) and make news items available to members of the public through physical copies and facilities where individuals with impairments can access news. This will reflect goodwill towards efforts of inclusivity. Furthermore, as the postal service seems to be losing relevance, this intervention targeting marginalized groupings will revive it. In the era of digitizing National Registration Cards, the postal service should ensure that all items with an NRC are catered for and registered with a post office box number and email system, which should also be linked to the Zambia Police Service for citizen fingerprint registration on the fingerprint data. In my view it is worth considering remodeling and reviving ZAMPOST and deliberately creating a policy for the institution to employ differently abled citizens. In no uncertain term underline the keywords “deliberately creating a policy”
