‘Jay Jay’ Banda proposes development agenda for Petauke

5

Petauke Central Member of Parliament Emmanuel ‘Jay Jay’ Banda has called for multi-sectoral approach in order to enhance a common development agenda in his constituency.

Mr Banda says the Constituency will only become the envy of many others, if all stakeholders come together , share their ideas and resources towards developing the area.

The lawmaker said in an interview that while others are business people and others serve as casual worker , among others, they are all important when it comes to pursuing the developmental goals for the constituency.

“We are all important irrespective of the sector where we belong. None of us can be done away with when seeking success in all aspects if we have to bring development to the area,” Mr Banda said.

The Petauke Central lawmaker was speaking in yesterday, during a retirement mass for a Mr. Emmanuel Sangulukani held at St. Oscar’s Catholic Church in Petauke.

Mr Banda thanked the electorate for giving him the mandate to represent them in Parliament, adding that his portfolio calls for higher service to the electorates.

He pledged to sacrifice his best and serve the people of Petauke Central with humility and dedication to duty.

“I want to appreciate every one of you for entrusting me with a huge responsibility of being your voice in Parliament. I stand ready to diligently deliver the much needed services for the goodness of our Constituency,” Mr Banda said.

And in his homily, St. Oscar’s Parish Priest Father Andrew Pumula Phiri said the church and every other member of Petauke remain committed to providing a role to ensure that development in the area is quickly attained as smoothly as possible for the common good.

“It is necessary for every resident of Petauke to become committed towards the attainment of greatness for the area, every person has a role to play and a gift from God that can be used and add value to achieving a common goal of purpose,” Father Phiri said.

Father Phiri added that leaders from various sectors are expected to provide leadership diligently and selflessly because, they replicate God’s role of love for all people.

Stop Kasenseli mine operations- Chief Chibwika

6

Chief Chibwika of the Lunda-speaking people in Mwinilunga district of Northwestern province has reaffirmed his call for the immediate suspension of operations at Kasenseli gold mine.

Chief Chibwika maintains his earlier stance that operations at the gold mine are illegal as they do not have a consent from the chiefdom.

He added that what is happening at the mine is no longer exploration as the license stipulates that full scale mining.

“Our position still remains the same, activities going on are illegal and must be stopped” he said.

Chibwika was speaking when Northwestern province minister Robert Lihefu in the company of area Member of Parliament Newton Samakayi, Zambezi east MP Brian Kambita and other government and party officials called on him at his palace today.

Chief said claims by Zambia Gold Company that the Chibwika community are benefiting from the mine through their five percent shares in the mine are false.

He explained that the five percent share is in a company called Kasenseli gold mining which is currently not operational.

And Mr Lihefu says it is disappointing to learn of the unclear ways in which Zambia Gold Company is conducting activities at the mine.

He assured the people of Chibwika chiefdom that their appeals will be delivered to President Hakainde Hichilema and expressed optimism that a decision favorable to the peoples desires will be made.

“I will deliver what I have heard from you your royal highness to the President exactly as you have given it to me” he said.

Clergymen in Kitwe welcome abolishment of Ministry of National guidance and Religious Affairs

12

The Council of Pastors and Prophets ( CPP ) has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for scrapping off the Ministry of National guidance and Religious Affairs as it was platform for bogus clergymen who syphoned public funds.

CPP spokesperson Bernard Katongo says the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation enshrined in the Republican Constitution and the people’s compliance to Christian values and principles is more meaningful, than establishing the said ministry.

” Zambia will remain a Christian Nation even without this Ministry, what is important is the declaration and the enshrinement of the declaration in the Constitution, Reverend Katongo said in an interview in Kitwe.

Rev. Katongo added that through the existing church mother bodies, government can continue attending to the welfare of the church.

The CPP spokesperson, whose organisation was recently registered , further noted that a lot of bogus clergy persons set up a lot of churches without physical structures to engage in bogus activities to hoodwink unsuspecting followers with fake miracles.

“ Most of these scandals were happening among Pentecostal churches which were assumed to working with the Ministry Religious Affairs, “ he said.

He noted that despite the bogus activities and scandals occurring in most Pentecostal churches the former Ministry made little or no efforts to control the situation.

And Reverend Katongo has urged President Hakainde Hichilema’s new dawn administration to consider putting a policy that individuals intending to form churches are qualified to reduce scandalous incidences in churches.

Yesterday during the thanks giving church service for the peaceful elections at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka, President Hichilema said his administration will continue working with the church to seek guidance despite the abolishment of the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs.

Zambia’s progress to meet SDGs goals affected by COVID-19 – HH informs UN

23

Zambia’s progress towards meeting the goals of the 2030 Agenda has been negatively impacted by the coming of the COVID-19 pandemic, President Hakainde Hichilema has told the United Nations (UN).
President Hichilema says the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded the pre-existing vulnerabilities and inequalities in all the spheres of Zambia’s economy, including agriculture production, trade and supply chains.

The Head of State said the health care and education systems in Zambia like many other developing countries whose ICT was inadequate had been disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Hichilema said this when he virtually addressed the76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA76) during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Moment Summit.

The SDG Moment is a check-in on the status of the Sustainable Development Goals at the beginning of the Decade of Action in light of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The President said there is urgent need to enhance Africa’s capacity for innovation and development in ICT infrastructure to enable developing countries, including Zambia to realise and enjoy the benefits arising from the ‘industry 4.0’.

“Since the adoption of the SDGs in 2016, Zambia made its first Voluntary National Review in 2019 and presented milestones. However, progress towards meeting the goals of the 2030 Agenda has not been without challenges. The coming of the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded the pre-existing vulnerabilities and inequalities in all spheres of the economy. The pandemic has disrupted agriculture production, trade and supply chains,” President Hichilema said.

The President reiterated Zambia’s commitment to accelerating the implementation of interventions towards the attainment of the SDGs while at the same time recognizing the need to enhance existing coordination, improve target mechanisms and efficient allocation of resources to deliver desired results.

He said it was important countries leveraged their resources as a global community in order to advance progress for the achievement of the SDGs.

President Hichilema said nations were living in a changing dynamic environment in which interdependency and collaboration were key in finding solutions to emerging challenges such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, terrorism, widening technological divide and illegal migration.

Approximately 30 to 35 Heads of State and Government that recently conducted voluntary national reviews including Zambia have been invited to make a direct contribution to the SDG Moment Summit.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a blueprint for fighting poverty and hunger, confronting the climate crisis, achieving gender equality and much more, within the next ten years. At a time of great uncertainty, the SDGs show the way forward to a strong recovery from COVID-19 and a better future for all on a safe and healthy planet.

Kamanga Laments Zesco and Warriors Continental Exits

2

FAZ President Andrew Kamanga has lamented Zesco United and Kabwe Warriors’ elimination from CAF club competitions.

Zesco were ejected from the CAF Champions League at the preliminary stage by Eswatini’s Royal Leopards via 2-2 away goal rule aggregate score-line.

Warriors bowed out of the CAF Confederation Cup at the same stage after losing 2-1 on aggregate to CFFA of Madagascar.

Writing in his column called President’s Corner, Kamanga said he expected Zambia’s four representatives in CAF club championship to excel in the preliminary round.

Zanaco and Red Arrows advanced further in the Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively after excelling in the preliminary round.

“We had expected all our flag carriers to sail past the first hurdle given the credibility of our envoys. Our envoys’ duty on the continent goes beyond just representing the club but the nation at large,” Kamanga wrote.

“By any standards that is a decent score although we could have loved all the four envoys to sail past the preliminaries. Congratulations to Zanaco and Red Arrows for qualifying to the next round while Kabwe Warriors and Zesco United are encouraged to pick themselves up after stumbling at the first hurdle.”

“We have repeatedly stressed the importance of our teams to do well in continental assignments to retain the credibility of our league that is ranked in the top 10 on the continent. The more our teams get competitive action on the continent; it could reflect in the quality of the local players that are part of our national teams,” he added.

Chiyangi Relieved After Green Eagles Beat Power Dynamos

0

Coach Aggrey Chiyangi was relieved to see Green Eagles beat Power Dynamos 2-1 in a FAZ Super Division match played in Kitwe on Sunday.

Eagles have bounced back after starting the new season with a 2-1 home loss to Buildcon in the league opener.

Chiyangi said he expected a tough match against his old club Power.

“The loss at home was very bad for us. The goodness was that even the players realised that what they gave was not good so they really pushed hard in training and they were focused to come and play Power,” Chiyangi said.

“The players knew that the game was going to be tough. Like I said again, if they (Power) make mistakes we can capitalize and get a good result,” he said.

Eagles’ next match is against Nkwazi away in Lusaka on September 25.

UPND not behind tombstone destruction in Mwinilunga-Chinyimba

14

Mwinilunga town council chairperson Jonathan Chinyimba says social media assertions that members of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) in the district were behind the destruction of 25 tombstones at Kawiko cemetery last week are malicious.

Mr. Chinyimba said allegations that the UPND in the area targeted graves of former Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja’s deceased relatives were unfortunate.

“A lot of graveyards were affected without regard to families, I was there with the police,” he said.

He said a number of graves and tombstones were affected with no regard to which family they belonged to.

The civic leader said the official statement on the matter by the police and mainstream media reflected the correct events that occurred at the graveyard.

Mr. Chinyimba has since advised people to avoid fabricating lies against the UPND.

He further advised anyone who may have scores to settle with the Kanganja family to handle them without involving innocent people and entities.

“The issue of trying to portray a wrong picture against the UPND is not good,” he said.

Mr. Chinyimba said people of Mwinilunga are peace-loving and have no grudges against anyone, including the Kanganja family.

Last Wednesday, unknown people destroyed 25 tombstones and attempted to exhume a coffin of a 103-year-old man at Kawiko cemetery in Mwinilunga.

23

President Hakainde Hichilema last night left the country for the 76th UN General Assembly in New York, United States of America. According to the president, while in the US, his team will ensure that all engagements and meetings will discuss matters of interest to the people of Zambia.

The President said that his team’s focus areas during these engagements will be on economic development, jobs, business opportunities, education and quality health care services for the people of Zambia, and as he promised before taking office, he will ensure prudent management of public resources and has therefore travelled with a lean team that is composed of Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance, Honourables Stanley Kakubo and Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane respectively.

The President further said that at the General Assembly his team will share our development plan for Zambia with the wider global community and as he addresses the meeting, he will present a case for that child in Chipulukusu, Chief Kambombo, Chama, Mugubudu or indeed Sikongo.

President said that his focus was turning around Zambia’s economy and that he is working round the clock to ensure that this comes to fruition.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema will join other Heads of State and Government at the Food Systems Summit convened by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres during the 76th UN General Assembly in New York, United States of America, according to a joint statement by the UN bodies based in Zambia.

“Climate shocks, limited crop and food diversity, high pests and disease burden and post-harvest food losses in addition to low intake of nutritious foods; all contribute towards Zambia’s food system challenges which must be addressed in order end hunger as the springboard for achieving all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The Summit is a platform for Zambia and other nations to recommit to the 2030 sustainable Development Goals only this time to also state actionable commitments that ensure everyone Zambian has access to affordable and nutritious foods for a healthy and productive people,” said Dr. Coumba Mar Gadio, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Zambia.

The Summit was conceived in 2019 by the UN Secretary-General as a “bottom-up” process to discuss and explore ways to achieve sustainable food systems by 2030. The solutions would come from dialogues between actors at all levels of the food system – the world’s 500 million small farmers, refugees, governments, NGOs, corporations, universities and think-tanks. The Summit is intended to catalyse momentum to transform the way the world produces, consumes and thinks about food. The Food Systems Summit is open to all people and its success depends on the engagement of citizens all over the world.

Under the leadership of the National Dialogue Convener, Zambia has conducted several district, provincial and national dialogues to solicit inputs from various stakeholders in developing a blueprint outlining the country’s commitments and transformative food systems pathways, actionable by the Zambian Government.

The preparation for Zambia’s participation at the Summit is being supported by the United Nations, cooperating partners, experts in line ministries, academia, and civil society under the National Food and Nutrition Commission as Secretariat.

HH wants Zambians’ Emotions Sufficiently Inflamed to support his Intention to lift President Lungu’s Immunity

50

By Sean Tembo – PeP President

1. Zambia is a beautiful country indeed. But the more things change, the more they remain the same. For me, perhaps my biggest undoing is my strong sense of fairness. I always believe that everyone must be treated fairly. By the way, treating someone fairly does not mean favoring them. It simply means adhering to the rules of natural justice. With the new administration coming into office, People’s expectations are obviously high. Each person has their own idea of the change that they want. Others believe that all those who were associated with the former PF regime must be lynched. But then, what kind of society would we be building if we did that? My belief has always been that we need to live in harmony as brothers and sisters if we are going to build this country into the great nation that it deserves to be.

2. That is to say those who served in the last administration need to be treated with dignity and respect. Of course the ones that erred and committed criminal offenses need to be charged and subjected to the due process of the law. But that should be done with dignity and humility. There is a thin line between persecution and prosecution. A few days ago, l complained about the high appetite by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to be sensational in their corruption fight. In recent days, we have seen the disclosure of intimate details of on-going corruption investigations such as the alleged purchase of a bank for K300 million by a former Councillor and more recently the alleged discovery of K65,330,000 cash and some dollars in a house in New Kasama, Lusaka. And yet no arrest has been made in any of these cases. As a former Police Officer, l can tell you that there is no decent investigative wing out there, worth their salt, that will disclose intimate details of an active investigation in which no one has been charged and arrested yet. Even if a case was to leak to the media, the standard response by any decent investigator is “No Comment”. Until such a time that the investigation has been concluded, the perpetrators and their conspirators of any, have been arrested and the case is ready for trial.

3. But what we are seeing under the new administration is totally different. We have investigative wings that are calling press briefings every day to update the public on the intimate details of ongoing major investigations. The question then becomes; to achieve what? It’s definitely not for purposes of building a strong case that can stand in court. A strong case cannot be built by sharing intimate details of an investigation with the public. By so doing, our investigative wings are simply arresting the co-conspirators to either run or destroy evidence. The end result is that these cases will be bungled and may not stand on all four when presented to the court. Guess who the biggest losers will be when that happens? You and l. Or in short, the Zambian people. Whatever money was stolen by members and associates of the former PF regime needs to be recovered and taken back to the treasury. But that can only happen if sober and professional investigations are done, and not this playing to the gallery that we are seeing.

4. The pattern that l am seeing here is that HH and his Government appear to be more in the business of portraying to the world how corrupt the PF administration was as opposed to prosecuting those specific members of the PF administration that stole and recovering the money. And here is the point fellow countrymen and women; when President Hichilema allows professional investigations to be undertaken which resulted in the arrest and conviction of perpetrators as well as recovery of stolen money, that is of benefit to the nation. It benefits you and l. However, when President Hichilema engages in grandstanding by merely portraying the former PF regime as corrupt through the media and ends up compromising these cases in court, that does not benefit you and l. It only benefits HH and his political fortunes. And my point here is that President Hichilema needs to act in a manner that puts the national interest first and not his personal or partisan political interests. We know that HH fought the PF for 15 years, and now that he is Head of State, he needs to focus on the national interest as opposed to continue with his fight against the PF, albeit now using state resources.

5. I know that some readers out there are asking to what end President Hichilema would decide to allow his law enforcement agencies to engage in grandstanding against the former PF regime as opposed to pursuing genuine cases in court. Well, my take is that HH wants to lift Lungu’s immunity and so he is trying to create a narrative for his next move. He is trying to inflame the emotions of the Zambian people and the surest way is to release sensational details of active investigations to the media. Details such as the purchase of a bank and its assets for K300 million by a mere Ward Councillor. Details such as that the coffers are empty even though there is US$2.9 billion. Details such as K65.33 million recovered, even if we have not seen pictures of the actual loot as the only pictures shown to us were downloaded from the internet. In other words, President Hichilema appears to have no intention to secure an actual conviction and recovery of stolen assets in court. Provided the emotions of Zambians are sufficiently inflamed to support the lifting of Lungu’s immunity, HH will be happy and he would’ve achieved his objective. In other words, you the Zambian people are being used as pawns in HH’s personal fight against Lungu, with no benefit to the nation.

6. And the worst part of all this drama is that we have seen it play out before. I for one remember vividly that day in 2002 when late former President Levy Mwanawasa addressed Parliament and made grandiose claims of criminality against late former President Fredrick Chiluba and his associates. We the Zambian people cheered and clapped for Mwanawasa at that time. But when the cases were taken to court, what was the end result? President Chiluba was vilified for owning expensive suits and shoes. Meanwhile Mwanawasa made his lawyer friends stinking rich as he paid the billions of Kwacha of taxpayers money for the private prosecutions against FTJ. And a lot of people’s lives were needlessly destroyed. People such as Faustin Kabwe and Aaron Chungu who had worked their butts off building a prosperous indigenous Zambian company; Access Financial Services Limited, had their company forfeited to the State for no sound reason whatsoever. All because Mwanawasa wanted to settle his personal beef against Chiluba? The question that each one of us must answer honestly today and now is; how much destruction of innocent people’s lives is acceptable as President Hichilema embarks on this familiar journey of settling his personal scores against former President Lungu? Fellow countrymen and women, I submit that President Hichilema should restrict himself to prosecution of alleged wrongdoers and not persecution.

God intervened during August 2021 general elections-President Hichilema

14

President Hakainde Hichilema has attributed the success of the August 2021 general elections to God’s grace and mercies.

President Hichilema says the electoral journey had a lot of challenges at every stage of the process but that God intervened.

ZANIS reports that President Hichilema was speaking during the national ecumenical thanksgiving prayers for peaceful elections, held at the Cathedral of the holy cross in Lusaka yesterday , stating that Zambians have a reason to thank God for the peace that characterised the whole election period.

The Head of state noted that the Lord has brought the country this far and that he will surely carry it through going forward.

Mr Hichilema called on members of the public to value and cherish the peace the country is enjoying to achieve economic development and stability.

“I have not heard of any country that has managed to achieve economic development in the midst of violence, wars or instability,” he added.

President Hichilima said church leaders should cooperate with the government to ensure peace is maintained in the country, adding that peace is not only the absence of wars but the absence of poverty, joblessness and literacy.

“The new dawn government came into service under difficult circumstances. We have a bigger responsibility to unite the country. All Zambians will feel that they have equal opportunities,” he said.

The Head of state has pledged to work with all churches and that the government will ensure all churches have space to operate and worship freely.

“The Church should not hesitate to call on us, to advise and challenge us because the church is a tool of God and responds to divine mission as well as provides cheques and balances,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) Board Chairperson, Paul Mususu said there is a lot for Zambians to be grateful to God.

Bishop Mususu said the former President Edgar Lungu’s willingness to help with the smooth transition is one of the reasons to be thankful.

“We do have needs, but now we need to say thank you. Even when we have lost, it is a requirement of God to give thanks,” he said.

And Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) Vice president, Charles Kasonde said the new government in place is a sign of God’s power.

Rev. Kasonde, who is also Solwezi Bishop, called on political leaders to always look up to God to avoid failing.

Warriors Booted Out of CAF Confed Cup

1

Kabwe Warriors’ 28-year continental absence ended on Sunday after losing 2-1 at home to CFFA of Madagascar at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The result saw Warriors bow out of the CAF Confederation Cup at the preliminary stage.

Warriors exit the CAF Confederation Cup by the same aggregate score line following a 0-0 in the first leg fixture played in Antananarivo on September 12.

Claudel Fanomenzana converted a penalty in the 17th minute to give CFFA the lead but Prince Mumba equalized in the 29th minute to see the sides go 1-1 into the break.

But Miravo Razafindrasata broke Warriors hearts with CFFA’s winning goal in the 73rd minute.

Warriors are Zambia’s second continental casualty in the preliminary stage joining Zesco United who were eliminated from the CAF Champion League by Royal Leopards of Eswatini just 24 hours at the same venue.

Zambia’s last men standing in continental football heading into October’s second knockout round are Zanaco in the CAF Champions League and Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup.
