49

A Zambian Businessman has appealed to the South African Government to ensure that Justice prevails in a matter were Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has been arrested on charges relating to fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

Shadreck Kapasa, who is involved in mining business, has lamented how Prophet Bushiri had him arrested 2 years ago for demanding payment of his money after supplying 500 grams of Gold worth 16 Million US dollars. Kapasa was arrested in South Africa on allegations of fraud.

Mr. Kapasa told journalists in Lusaka that he was requested to travel to South African to receive his payment but instead was arrested by Police after Prophet Bushiri reported him as a fraudster together with his 3 other Zambian business associates Daniel Phiri, Andrey Nawa and Ephraim Musukwa

Mr. Kapasa said he served 8 months together, in a South African Prison and was released after interventions by Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa Emmanuel Mwamba and has to date not received his money.

Mr. Kapasa is disappointed that such acts are being perpetuated by a Man of God and has questioned his standing with God.

He has also cautioned Zambian Businessmen who are in the process of engaging in business with Prophet Bushiri to disengage themselves.

The Self-proclaimed prophet Bushiri and his wife who on Monday appeared in Court were arrested by the Hawks on Friday last week in Rustenburg on charges of fraud and money laundering.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the arrest and said the case against the couple was linked to alleged offences of fraud and money laundering, as well as the contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA), which had been committed from 2015.

The contravention of the Act was in relation to Exchange Control Regulations relating to foreign currency of $1 147 200 (around R15m).

ZNFU calls for coordinated effort to address urgent issues affecting Agriculture in Zambia

2

The President of the Zambia National Farmers Union and the Minister of Agriculture,Michael Katambo, accompanied by the new Permanent Secretary met yesterday to discuss operational modalities on how the agriculture sector can be
revamped going forward.

Welcoming the new Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Mr. Songowayo Zyambo, the Union reiterated its commitment to dialogue and consultation with the MoA as it is the anchor for agriculture development in the country. The duo agreed to create a platform for periodic discussions to take place in a coordinated manner so that there are no surprises on both sides even when the parties agree to disagree.

ZNFU, as a body representing farmers, highlighted some pressing issues which need urgent action by way of consultation and action. Among the issues discussed were: –

1.The importance of uplifting of the maize/mealie meal export ban quickly to enable sales to take place as the country prepares for the next marketing season.

2.The need for Government to prioritize funding for the agriculture sector so that come marketing time farmers will be paid on time and inputs positioned on time at planting time (the Union bemoaned blame being heaped on farmers for poor yields, yet farmers are paid late, and inputs are supplied late).

3.The need for credible data to guide policy decisions (declaring a surplus through the crop forecast then banning grain exports; sending conflicting market signals).

4.The importation of agriculture products taking place at the expense of expanding local production when the country should be harnessing production at all costs.

5.Farmers facing financial distress due to policy inconsistencies and external factors resulting in foreclosures.

6.The tobacco industry,a commodity which is a leading foreign exchange earner is now gripped with uncertainty.

7.New costs imposed by new Statutory Bodies threatening the viability of farming hence the need to reposition the sector for growth.

The Union is confident that a first step has been set and that the platform for dialogue will materialize soon so that the issues are tabled, solutions proposed, and implementation followed through. Meanwhile, the Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Katambo, indicated that he is committed to work with stakeholders so that the sector speaks with one voice.

Movie Review : Glass

M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable and 2016’s Split, in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within.

PROS

  • Great performances by the whole cast especially James McAvoy.
  • Interesting unpredictable story line.

CONS

  • If you have not watched ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘Split’ you will not be able to follow the story, as they did not do a good job of introducing the characters to new viewers.
  • The pacing of the movie is too low at times.

FAVORITE QUOTES

Elijah Price: First name, Mister. Last name, Glass.

Dr. Ellie Staple: I don’t think we are particularly evil, and we don’t choose sides. We try to stop both of you. If there is one of you, the opposite of you appears; it escalates, we step in. There just can’t be gods amongst us.

CONCLUSION

Glass is the conclusion of a super hero movie trilogy. The main problem with this trilogy is the sheer amount of time between movies. 16 years between the first and second film, 3 year between the second and third film. This makes it hard to follow at times as you will be required to remember what happened in the previous films.

In an era filled with Marvel and DC super movies, Glass is rather refreshing in its non traditional approach. Glass has a down-to-earth believable, gripping story line. James McAvoy, who played the character of Kevin Wendell Crumb, was the star of the show. His portrayal of the different personalities of Crumb was simply amazing.

Unfortunately Glass concludes Shyamalan’s superhero movie trilogy in a manner that manages to be absorbing, frustrating, and bewildering at the same time.

Prophet Bushiri hires top criminal lawyer – Barry Roux

04 February 2019: Followers of Shepherd Bushiri came out in their numbers to support him as he appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court with his wife on February 4 2019. Bushiri has hired Oscar Pistorius advocate Barry Roux to represent him and his wife Mary. Picture: Thapelo Morebudi/The Sunday Times.

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri who has been selling anointing oil to his followers including appointments for prayers is in hot soup for hiring one of the most expensive criminal lawyers, Barry Roux, as a lead defense attorney.

Bushiri was arrested on Friday together with his wife for alleged fraud and money laundering and has acquired the services of top defence advocate Barry Roux whose daily fees is reportedly close to R50 000.

Hiring of Roux who gained fame when he defended murder convict Paralympian Oscar Pistorius in 2014 has landed the Malawian born televangelist in trouble with some people accusing him of being a fake prophet.

Life is: Prophet hires a prominent lawyer to defend him while his brainwashed people uses his water when in trouble”

Writing on Facebook, Gitta Phiri said: “Same lawyer that represented a murder will representing a prophet.

“When you cant do yourself a miracle to get bailedl”! Lets all agree that dude don’t perform any miracles full stop!”

“Life is: Prophet hires a prominent lawyer to defend him while his brainwashed people uses his water when in trouble” posted Raynolds Liabunya on social media.

Jozi News, one of the tabloids in South Africa accused Bushiri of disregarding his anointing oil in a story headlined Self Proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri Prefer Barry Roux Over His Anointing Oil.

South Africa’s renown advocate and whistleblower, Man’s Not Barry Roux who tweets at AdvBarryRoux alleged that Bushiri’s followers will foot the embattled prophet’s legal bills.

“So, Barry Roux has displaced Annointed Oil?…Now it’s no longer ‘Jesus fights our battles, no stress’ but ‘Barry Roux will try his best to fight out battles’!.. conmen in times of difficulties and tribulations will jump onto fellow men for help. This how you can know them” another commented.

But Bushiri’s Communications Director, Ephraim Nyondo, said that Roux has always been a family attorney.

“There is no change in the usual legal team of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri’s as he goes for bail hearing tomorrow with South Africa’s top advocate Barry Roux, again, leading ECG leader’s defense team. Advocate Roux has always been Bushiri’s family lawyer” said Nyondo.

Bushiri and his wife are expected to appear in court this morning to file for bail.

UK to resume funding to Zambia’s health sector

9

The British High Commissioner to Zambia, Mr. Fergus Cochrane – Dyet has announced the decision by the United Kingdom to resume funding to Zambia’s health sector.

High Commissioner Cochrane-Dyet stated that the decision has come in the wake of the financial reforms that the Zambian government has put in place.

“This resumption of systems follows the suspension of funds which we communicated to the Ministry last year,” he said.

The High Commissioner said this at the Intercontinental Hotel, during the Ministry of Health Annual Consultative Meeting in Lusaka yesterday.

High Commissioner Cochrane-Dyet stated that the traditional risks that arose from giving funding directly to government had been a source of concern to the British Government and possibly other Cooperating Partners as well.

And Health Minister Dr. Chitalu Chilufya stated that the Annual Consultative Meeting with strategic partners was an opportunity for the Ministry of Health and its strategic partners to jointly review the performance of the sector, interrogate challenges facing the sector and jointly agree on strategies to strengthen health systems and ultimately improve service delivery across the continuum of care.

Dr Chilufya stated that the government placed high premium on ensuring that the citizens are healthy and productive as this would spur government to attain economic and social development as espoused in the country’s 7th National Development Plan.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Henrik Cederin, the Swedish Ambassador to Zambia and lead Cooperating Partner for Health, High Commissioners and Ambassadors, Permanent Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, Country Representatives from the United Nations Agencies and Representatives of international and local NGOs.

Mwanakatwe confirms that bids to sell part of ZCCM-IH have been received

Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe

Zambia has received bids from Canada’s First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and others for a 17 percent stake in state mining investment arm ZCCM-IH, the finance minister said on Tuesday.

“There are multiple unsolicited offers on the table, including from FQM, which are based on preferential share conversions,” said Margaret Mwanakatwe on the sidelines of a mining conference in Cape Town.

“The offers relate to the ministry’s 17 percent holding in ZCCM-IH and a sale would be subject to cabinet approval,” she said.

Meanwhile, political analyst Sishuwa Sishuwa has claimed that former ZCCM-IH Chief Executive Officer Pius Kasolo was fired for his refusal to sanction the sale of Zambia’s 20% stake in First Quantum Minerals.

Dr Sishuwa said a very reliable source has just told him that President Lungu’s regime is now moving fast and that representatives of Government & FQM are currently in South Africa to conclude the deal which he called extremely nauseating.

“Unless they abandon the deal, the outcome is sealed,” he twitted.

But Former Lusaka Securities Exchange Chief Executive Officer Brian Tembo is doubtful that the deal is on the table.

Mr Tembo has since urged the public to visit the LuSE to understand the provisions of disposal of assets of a listed company to determine the truth around this issue and whether or not the correct process is or has been followed.

“ZCCMIH is listed in London, LuSE and on an unregulated French market. If at all there is truth in the 20% stake sell in one of its investee companies that clearly affects the earnings of shareholders (of which I am one). Listings Rules require that the company notifies existing and potential shareholders through a specific notice : Cautionary Notice.”

“The said notice requires to be sanctioned by SEC/LuSE. This is done as soon as the company gets approached by a buyer or intends to dispose off,” Mr Tembo said.

“In any case the company requires a Board and shareholders resolution to OK the transaction. Minority interests are particularly important in such circumstances. The CEO does not decide to dispose assets so I find those assertions strange but he or she implements lawful Board decisions.”

Train competent nurses, PS urges nurse training institutions

4

EASTERN Province Assistant Secretary, Beenzu Chukuba, delivers her speech during the graduation ceremony of nurses and midwives held at Mwami Adventist Mission Hospital in Chipata on Friday. 207 nurses and midwives from Mwami, Chipata General and Saint Francis Hospitals graduated.

Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary in charge of training Professor Elwyn Chomba has called on nurse training institutions to ensure they train competent health providers.

She says there is need to widen the training net in a bid to attain universal health care in the country.

The Permanent Secretary said this when she graced the General Nursing Council meeting with nurse training institutions.

Professor Chomba says the Private Public Partnership policy in the health sector is yielding positive results as more private health training institutions has come on board.

She said the country has 37 private training institutions and 38 public and church owned institutions.

And General Nursing Council Registrar Dr Aaron Banda says nurses play a critical role in achieving universal health care.

He called for continued collaboration between government and the private sector in the training of nurses in the country.

Meanwhile for Former Minister of Health in the MMD government Dr Brian Chituwo says insisting on quality standards is cardinal in achieving quality health care providers

Mine workers in one of the Zambian Mines on the Copper belt

Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) says it will engage KCM management to ensure that its members that have been given abrupt retirement letters are allowed to work up to the age of 60.

The union says it will dialogue with the mining company to ensure that the workers that are not ready to retire now can be given a few more years before they can be retired.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Kitwe yesterday, MUZ president Joseph Chewe said KCM should not retrench workers using the court ruling which ruled that the company could retire workers that have reached the age of 55 and above.

Konkola Copper Mine is currently in the process of giving out retirement letters to workers who have reached the age of 55.

The decision comes as a surprise to workers most of whom were not ready to go on retirement as they were expecting to retire at 65.

Mr Chewe said KCM should realise that people need to prepare and plan for retirement before they can finally be retired.

The MUZ president said the union has consulted its lawyers, the Ministry of Labour as well as the Labour Commissioner and has a few options of pursuing the matter if the planned negotiations with the mine management do not yield positive results.

Last week, Konkola Copper Mine started issuing out retirement letters to workers who have reached the age of 55.

The Financial Sector Deepening (FSD) Zambia, in partnership with MTN Zambia and Nkanmu Investments limited have announced a new initiative to deliver financial education through a mobile application called ‘Football Yatu’.

The initiative aims to reach over a thousand-young people in Kalingaling and Garden townships with basic financial literacy information that is crucial for them to make informed decision about their financial health.

Football Yatu is an android application that conveys real time access to the Zambian Super League including live scores, latest news and transfer information.

It is free for download on the android play store and currently boasts over Three thousand five hundred active users.

The application has been endorsed by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) as a partner in growing the game of football in Zambia.

The application now hosts the FSD Zambia portal where the Digital Financial Literacy training has been uploaded.

The three organisations are supporting 20 young lead facilitators who have been recruited and trained on the financial education topics such as saving, budgeting and insurance and will train over 1000 of their peers.

FSD Zambia Board Chairman Caleb Fundanga said that such initiatives that are deliberate about educating young people on their personal finances are a starting point for expanding the range of economic and social opportunities available to the youth in Zambia so that they are ultimately responsible for their own growth and development.

“The earlier children and youth are educated about finance, the better their lives can be. Early understanding pays off; young people across Zambia have consistently demonstrated that with the right skills and knowledge, they are able to unleash their potential.” Dr. Fundanga said.

And MTN Zambia’s Financial Services General Manager Mr. Edmund Barwuah noted that partnerships with FSD Zambia, Football Yatu and Mobile Money are fundamental in the Mobile Money ecosystem, hence his organisation’s partnerships with them.

“We currently serve more than 2 million mobile money customers, making MTN Zambia MoMo the largest platform in the country. We consider taking financial services to the unbanked and the youth a huge responsibility that demands constant innovation and this forms the basis of our partnership with the two organisations.”

“MTN Zambia is moving into the digital economy and Football Yatu has long been our partner and we are excited to be taking this partnership to the next level as this will spearhead innovative initiatives which will deepen financial access among the youths in the nation” Mr. Barwuah said.

Meanwhile, Football Yatu Founder Charles Nkandu said that the development of the application has increased the spectrum to see beyond football and deploy it to meet many social and economic needs of the Zambian people.

“To be able to host the Digital Financial Literacy Training for the young people in Kalingalinga and Garden township is such an honour for us. Football creates many conversations and has the power to unite and teach. Our work shall continue, and we are so thankful to our partners FSD Zambia and MTN Zambia for making this program possible” Mr. Nkandu said.

Minister of Sports and Youth Development Moses Mawere said the Football Yatu application will supplement government efforts in empowering the youth in Zambia.

In remarks given on his behalf by the Ministry’s Chief Youth Development Officer David Musonda, Mr. Mawere said such initiatives expand the reach of young people to understand their finances.
