Gridbow denies blaming government for delays in Farm block solar project

Gridbow is an EPC infrastructure company based in South Africa. The
Company has been executing multiple projects on behalf of various clients in
South Africa and other African countries such as Zambia, Zimbabwe,
Swaziland, Benin and Malawi . In line with its growth strategy, an international
Division was formed in January 2015 to successfully execute Engineering,
Procurement and Construction Projects, as well as affordable and
sustainable renewable energy solutions to multiple sectors including
agriculture Sector.

The Government of the Republic of Zambia has identified agriculture as one
of the engines to economic development hence the commitment to develop
agriculture as the main stay of the economy. To this effect every province is
proposed or already has at least one productive farm block. To support
Government’s efforts to diversify the economy, Gridbow Engineers hopes to
partner with Government to supply power to these farm blocks.

In January of 2017 the Government of the Republic of Zambia granted rights
to Gridbow Engineers and Technical Services Pty Limited to invest in the 10
Farm Blocks with solar energy solutions that would produce electricity for
irrigation and other productive uses in the farm blocks including provision of
lighting to homes surrounding the farm blocks , clinics and schools. The
proposal involves the provision of power from a containerized independent
Solar solution to dedicated productive establishments in the farm blcoks with
consumption of energy recorded via a metering system. Gridbow will offer its
end users installation, as well as continuous operation and maintenance
services .The end users are expected to be the farmers .

The company is working with funders who are very keen to invest in the
project. However, they have requested for a lot of risk imitigating information.
The availlable information with Government was not meant for a project of this
kind which also is a first in Zambia, but was meant for other equally
important uses, though relating to the famrblocks themselves, albeit not for
our proposed solutions. We have since resolved as a company to conduct
our own feasibilty studies with the support of Government which will
supplement the already available information and which we shall submit to
the Funders.

A project of this kind takes time to kick off as there is need to
estalish the number of off-takers as well as calculate the required loads per
farm block before construction can commence. Each farm block for example
will be growing different products which will not be entirely rain fed and will
require irrigation systems. There is need to acertain the require loads to
drive the pumps for irragation systems and so on and so fouth.

Gridbow Engineers does not at all blame Government for any delays on the
project. Infact the company is very grateful to Government for the opportunity
and we hope we can realise the vision of offering affordable and sustaible
clean energy to the farmblocks and supplement Governments efforst in
diversifying the economy.

We wish to conclude by placing on record that the Government , through the office of the Permanent Secretary , Ministry of Agriculture has been very supportive and accommodating. As a matter of fact, having worked in different countries, we must state that Zambia is being led by one of the most open and accomodating Governments we have ever conducted business with. The fact that Government has offered us an
oppotunity to invest in the farm blocks is a clear indication and demostration of their desire to bring investments into the country and uplift lives of its people.

Government says it is concerned on the increased noise pollution in Livingstone city saying the trend is negatively impacting on the tourism industry in the tourist capital.

Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale says government in concerned on the noise pollution mainly emanating from bars, night clubs, taverns, and churches’ overnight prayers, respectively.

Dr. Hamukale says the development is discouraging and forcing tourists to desert the tourist capital’s hotels and lodges in preference for quitter areas on the Zimbabwean side.

Bars, taverns, night clubs and churches that conduct overnight prayers should be responsible and consider notifying the councils if they wish to go beyond stipulated time, he said.

Commenting in government curtailing the freedom of worship by regulating noise generated during overnight prayers, the minister said government was not frustrating worship but wants churches to be responsible and follow the concept of prayer and worship.

And the minister has urged bars, restaurant, taverns, and nightclub owners to exercise optimum hygiene.

Dr. Hamukale said government was aware that the named entities were among the generators of solid as well as liquid waste and has since urged such business entities to put up litter bins in order to keep their environments clean.

With influx of refugees, Government urged to control spread of cholera

0

A Public Health technocrat has called for stringent measures aimed at preventing the further outbreak of the cholera epidemic in the country following the influx of refugees into Zambia through Cheingi district in Luapula province.

Dr Abraham Miti who works at Chikankata mission hospital says the Ministry of Health should consider putting up stringent measures in Chiengi District and the surrounding area to curb the spread pf the disease which has so far claimed over 500 lives in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The medical doctor was speaking in a telephone interview with the Zambia News and Information Services(ZANIS) adding that it is prudent to ensure that necessary measures are in place to curb the spread of the killer disease in Zambia.

The ministry of health should be alert and ensure that the area bordering areas in Luapula and Northern provinces are cordoned against the outbreak of the disease.

He said the Ministry of Health should be on the alert especially that the rain season when the diseases prevalence become high in Zambia.

Dr Miti said time to prevent the outbreak of Cholera is now and that the Ministry should not wait until the diseases breaks out but that remedial and preventive measures should be put in place as a proactive strategy.

And Doctor Miti also told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chikankata district that Zambians should also be alert and ensure that they keep their surroundings clean to prevent outbreak of disease..

He said Zambians should always remember to exercise maximum hygiene standards during this time of the year to avoid un necessary loss of lives due to non-adherence to good hygiene standards, especially during the rainy season.

President Edgar Lungu wants to create more jobs and slash poverty levels through a deliberate creation of an efficient communication network that reduces the cost of doing regional business especially in the railway sector said Mr Amos Chanda, the Presidential Spokesman.

Mr Chanda was speaking when he met in his office, a delegation of influential business from Sweden targeting the railway sector for fresh investment that could open Zambia to ‘new’ western money markets and broaden its business reach in the sub-region as a key ‘land-linked’ country player.

Zambia’s Charge d’ Affaires to Sweden Mr Anthony Mukwita who brought a high-powered delegation of TEAM SWEDEN for a series of consultative meetings in Lusaka with Finance Minister hon. Felix Mutati last week, among others, revealed this in an interview after a scheduled meeting in Mr Chanda in his office.

“President Lungu strongly feels that improving the communication sector (transport, airline etc) as much as possible would in the long run boost Zambia’s economic growth, create jobs and reduce poverty,” said Mr Chanda.

The presidential spokesman said President Lungu would henceforth ensure business interest groups from as diverse backgrounds—such as Sweden—as possible get involved in achieving his greater poverty reduction and job creation aspiration as possible.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu is fully aware of TEAM SWEDEN plans to ‘actively’ participate in the development of the railway network in Zambia that increases Zambia’s ‘inter-linkedness’ in the region as a crucial member of SADC and COMESA.

“He (President Lungu) is aware of the need to allow companies such as Bombardier from Sweden and others from Asia to achieve a greater goal of efficient transport communication,” said Mr Chanda.

Mr Chanda said, “the President is fully cognisant of the fact that the countries that have improved the most in history globally have done so riding on an efficient and cost-effective transport network.”

TEAM SWEDEN, supported by the embassy of Sweden in Zambia was represented at the State House meeting by Mr Christian Bengtsson, Bombardier Head of Swedish Rail Export Programme and Mr Johan Oldhoff, Head of Bombardier Bids.

Charge d’ Affaires Mukwita represented the Zambian embassy in Stockholm.

Prior to the meeting with Mr Chanda at State House, TEAM SWEDEN had progressive discussions with the Minister of Finance hon. Felix Mutati and Permanent Secretary Mukuba Chikuli according to the diplomat.

Mr Mukwita described discussions with Minister Mutati and TEAM SWEDEN as “optimistic and progressive” for Zambia’s railway sector and, “hon. Mutati’s desire to diversify financing even more heart-warming.”

The Zambian diplomat said because Bombardier is the ‘world’s number one railway company’ means less worries for Zambia as business discussions progress.

“Their tested global record of executing crucial jobs at reduced costs but achieving world class results is one thing that makes their proposal attractive for railway job engagement in Zambia.”

He said the Bombardier team now awaits advice from Finance Minister Felix Mutati on ‘a progressive way forward’ for the finance package.

The decision would have to be made on whether Zambia continues or discontinues discussions with the world’s number one railway company.

“The great thing in my view of opening up a business line with Sweden is that as a leader in the Scandinavian world,” said Mr Mukwita, “when you are in bed with Sweden you open doors for greater and diversified business with Norway, Denmark, Finland etc and many more in that part of the world.”

Mr Mukwita adds that, “their AAA corporate governance records (Scandinavian countries ratings) simply helps Zambia globally hurts it in no way.”

Mr Mukwita said Minister Mutati had shown a greater commitment to diversify infrastructure development financing to safe guard Zambia from any danger of an economic bubble burst in one region of the economy.

The Zambian diplomat said as the nation pushes its economic development agenda, engaging the Swedish company for the railway assignment could mean greater job creation, poverty reduction and an increased economic activity in the transport sector.

“That is what we know President Lungu wants,” Mr Mukwita said, “a vibrant job market and an efficiently linked Zambia that plays a leading economic role in both SADC and COMESA while benefitting the local community.”

The Presidents spokesman Mr Chanda assured TEAM SWEDEN that President Lungu would hear of all concerns they have as the continue to discuss participation in Zambia’s railway sector.

Mr Chanda said President Lungu is determined to ensure as many few trucks used the roads to also cut down on loss of lives as possible by diverting traffic onto the railway lines.

Mr Mukwita and his delegation have since returned to Sweden awaiting progress from the Zambian side.

Others that attended meetings with Hon. Mutati and PS Mukuli include: Swedish Embassy deputy head of mission Karin Sveken, Trade and Communication Officer Anna Dloski, Ruth Phiri from Business Sweden, Johan Oldhoff and Christian Bengtsson both from Bombardier.

Mr Mukwita described the talks as fruitful adding, “the ball is now in the court of hon Mutati and his Permanent Secretary Mr Chikuba Mukuli.”

Some of the computers handed over to Namuseba Primary School in Monze District today by Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) in a bid to complement government’s efforts to spearhead Information, communication and Technology (ICTs) learning in schools.

A Zambian in diaspora Pascal Nsokolo has donated ten desk top computers worth thousands of kwacha to four institutions in Mbala District in Northern province.

Three computers have been given to Mbala secondary school while one has gone to Kaka secondary.

He has since warned the community to guard the computers that have been purchased at huge amounts of money.

Zambians having fewer children

23

The Zambia All Parties Parliamentarians on Population and Development-ZAPAD-says the country’s fertility trends in urban areas have gone down from 7 children per family in 1970 to 5 children per family as of 2013.

The trend has remained constant in rural areas because people have not fully internalised family planning.

ZAPAD Chairperson Jonas Chanda disclosed this on arrival in New Delhi, India.

Dr Chanda is in India to attend a three-day conference dubbed “enhancing the role of Parliamentarians in the interlinkage between population issues and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development part 3.”

Dr. Chanda, who is also Parliamentary Committee on Health Chairperson, says Zambia has put in place measures to benefit from the population dividends through investment in health, education and employment.

The Bwana Mkubwa Lawmaker said Parliamentarians are lobbying for aggressive actions on family planning because it is both a health and a development issue.

Dr. Chanda said the Parliamentarians want to join hands in working with Government to decentralise policies on family planning because the dependence ratio on the well to do is very high.He also said it is sad that 16000 girls, on average, drop out of school every year due to early pregnancies.

Dr. Chanda said ZAPAD is advocating that Government implements policies which are already in place to curb pregnancies related to school drop outs. This is contained in a statement made available by First Secretary Press and Tourism at the Zambian Mission in New Delhi, India, Bangwe Naviley.

Exposing Zambia’s Fake Heroes by Chitimukulu (Part1)

94

By Henry Kanyanta Sosala

Preamble

There was an ideological tug of war to dominate their influences over the emerging African states between the western countries and the Communist states i.e. The Union of Sovereign Socialist Republics (USSR) or popularly known as Russia. In fact Africa has had five great Marxists: Sekou Toure of Guinea, Samora Machel of Mozambique, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, M. Babu of Tanzania and a lawyer Henry Chilufya Chanda of Zambia.
Professor P. B. Harris in his book, Studies in African Politics wrote:

‘’President Sekou Toure the most radical Marxist in West Africa rejected the referendum when President Charles de Gaulle of France came to power. The new French President decided that since the Guineans rejected the referendum, then they chose disengagement and should therefore have it. And within days, French civil servants withdrew and out of 4,000 all but 15 had gone in three weeks. Cash registers were ripped out, the weapons of the police were withdrawn and even the library at the Ministry of Justice was removed. The Governor was ordered to remove the furniture from Government House and strip all fittings movable and immovable and ship them back to France. Fruit trees were cut, walls were torn down, gardens decimated, telephone wires were cut and a ship bringing 5,000 tons of rice was re-routed.’’

And to President Sekou Toure this was a chance to turn openly to the Communists and it was not long that the French President realized his terrible political blunder. And here is what Professor Harris wrote:

‘’As far as Guinea was concerned this was an unprofitable exercise. De Gaulle agreed to resume technical and financial aid to Guinea complete with grants-in-aid.’’

The Consequences After the End of the Cold war.

The fall of the USSR has had detrimental consequences on Africa. The end of the cold war has strengthened western nations’ dominance in Africa. The best example is Zimbabwe and how the greatest true son of Africa and the barometer of the African consciousness, President Robert Mugabe and the great people of Zimbabwe have been subjected to all kinds of abuses by the capitalist-exploiters and their African parasites and puppets. Senegal’s President Abdoulaye Wade bemoaned the fact that Africa had not done enough to assist Zimbabwe in its hour of need.

’’African leaders left President Mugabe alone to resolve the imbalance of land ownership and we should have been collectively more involved.’’ (New African magazine winter 2008).

It is a matter of record that in a land of more than 11 million people the whites who made up less than 2 per cent of the population, controlled more than 60 per cent of the arable land. Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe is an Ndebele word for ‘’slaughter’’ and it refers to the savagery of the white settlers who crushed the attempt by the indigenes to fight back and leading king Lobengula to swallow poison rather than be captured.

And what had really happened to king Lobengula? Historian Cyril Dunn in his book, Central African Witness wrote that Cecil John Rhodes’ agents signed the Rudd concession with King Lobengula. The Rudd Concession was signed in 1888 by King Lobengula of the Matabele, under various and considerable pressures and with the encouragement of British missionary advice. He believed that he was selling to an organization of white men no more than the right to dig holes in the ground for gold. In return for which he got sterling 100 pounds, one thousand Martini-Henry rifles and the promise, never discharged, of a steamer for royal jaunts on the Zambezi.

Who was John Cecil Rhodes? Bertrand Russell, a British philosopher, mathematician and historian who described Rhodes as ‘’a bad man in Africa’’ wrote in Freedom and Organization:

“Cecil Rhocldes created a vast system of political corruption both in England and in South Africa. The British South African Company obtained a Charter from the British government which was secured by means of support in high quarters and among them was the Duke of Fife (King Edward VII’s son-in-law) and through him the British Royal Family became implicated in Rhodes’ doings.”

We find the same slippery tricks by Her Majesty’s Government with the Rudd Concession as Mr. Bertrand Russell wrote:

‘’Meanwhile Lobengula discovered that the document to which he had set his mark was more far-reaching in its effects than he had supposed. He dictated a letter to Queen Victoria, saying among other things:

’A group of white men came to see me and the leader called himself Rudd. They asked me for a place to dig gold and said they would give me something in exchange. I told them to bring what they would give and a document was written and given to me for signature. I asked what it contained and was told in it were my words and the words of those men. Although three months later, I heard from other sources that I had given by document the right to all the minerals of my country. I called a meeting of my indunas and also of the white men and demanded a copy of the document. It was proved to me that I had signed away the mineral rights of my whole country to Rudd and his friends. I have since had a meeting of my indunas and they will not recognize the paper, as it contains neither my words nor the words of those who got it….I write to you that you may know the truth about everything,’

‘’A few months later, King Lobengula sent another letter, in which he complained that ‘the white people are troubling me much about gold. If the Queen hears that I have given away the whole country, it is not so.’ The Queen, through her colonial secretary, replied that it was impossible for him to exclude white men, and that, having made inquiries as to the persons concerned, she was satisfied that they ‘may be trusted to carry out the working for gold in the king’s country without molesting his people, or in any way interfering with their kraals, gardens or cattle’,’’
In 1949, Roy Welensky became Member of Legislative Council or Parliament for Broken Hill (now Kabwe), and he became the political Supremo in the North. He was later knighted and became the Prime Minister of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (i.e., Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

He told Parliament ‘’Now I ask the House in all seriousness ___ was it possible, __ does the House believe that it was possible for an African king, sixty years ago to have understood the delicate differences when he was negotiating with a Company, and when he was negotiating with a King__ because if the House is prepared to believe that then I think the House will believe anything.

In support of his argument, he cited a judgement given by Lord Summer in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on the question of land rights in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe):

‘’Their Lordships cannot accept this argument, as well might it be said that a savage who sold ten bullocks, being the highest number up to which he knew how to count, had thereby sold his whole herd, numbering, in fact many hundreds…’’

In The Northward Trek, Stanley Portal Hyatt summed up king Lobengula’s disaster and pointed out that he was betrayed by the British:

‘’Lobengula was never sufficiently civilized to break his word. He was a native gentleman and because he tried to live up to the faith that was in him, trusting white men who appeared to be gentle too, his career ended in disaster both to himself and to his tribe. And even if Lobengula was ‘an unmitigated savage,’ he was under the protection of the United Kingdom Government when these events occurred.’’

The capitalist-exploiters have declared total war on President Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwean people. They have mounted a special radio programme to denounce Zimbabwean leadership on Studio 7 of the Voice of America. This is because the Zimbabwean issue has affected the superior race, otherwise if this was a matter of principle they could have done the same thing when the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin confiscated the properties and expelled Indians from that country.

It was reported in New African magazine that Britain’s chief of staff, General Charles Guthrie told Cole Moreton in an interview

‘’how Britain’s Prime minister, Tony Blair came close to invading Zimbabwe in a bid to restore white privilege.’’

It was also reported in the same issue:

‘’As part of the regime change in Zimbabwe, the American embassy in Harare has been deliberately engineering the mushrooming of NGOs and CSOS which are hostile to the government, by offering to finance them, according to a document unearthed from the archives.’’

President Mugabe has declared:

‘’Political power alone is meaningless unless people have land. The ill-fated sanctions against the innocent people of Zimbabwe can never subdue our resilience and inner propulsion to succeed.’’

And hence a new concept in the ideological armoury of imperialism known as ‘’statecraft’’ has been created, which is the art of aggressively wielding state power in the interests of the local elites and imperialism.

‘’Statecraft’’ is a concept and a practice that consciously aims to demobilize the people as a motive force for change and treats them as objects. ‘’Statecraft’’ is a ‘’craft’’ precisely because it is both an art and a set of particular outcomes in which control over state power is cleverly taken away from both and above the heads of the poor to attain class objectives and domestic compradorial and parasitic elites under the tutelage, protection and for the ultimate benefit of the capitalist-exploiter.

[pullquote]We have been taught never to see beyond the white man.[/pullquote]

The Brenthurst foundation is the brain-child of the powerful and multi-billionaire Oppenheimer family and is the founder of the Anglo American group of companies which serves foreign business interests in various African countries. The company is based in South Africa and that is where all the regime changes in Africa originate and South Africa has contributed so greatly to the mercenaries that fought in Nigeria during the Biafra session; in Congo; in Angola etc. And it was through South African contacts that the Chiluba regime came to power. It is important at this juncture to let you know the events that contributed to the regime change in Zambia. According to the CIA-trained career intelligence officer, Dr. Kamoyo Mwale, the coordinated intelligence exchanges between Zambia and South Africa at that time, the regime change in Zambia was initiated by the western nations who didn’t want the future ANC government in South Africa to be influenced by UNIP and Dr. Kaunda. Dr. Chiluba and his colleagues were given US$ 600 million, which was deposited at some embassy in Pretoria, from where they drew their campaign funds.(Sunday Post 26th March 2006). In this case the MMD was obligated to its source of existence and power. The English say, ‘’who pays the piper calls for the tune.’’

And in this respect, Ronald Sinyangwe will never forget how Professor Akuffo described the deception beneath the colonial education system:

‘’When a fool becomes wise, then the game is over since there is no one to play the game of a fool.’’

We have been taught never to see beyond the white man. This hypnotizing mentality has subverted the African personality like no other ideology since you can never outperform the self-portrait you have of yourself.

In fact we were done for, when Chiluba and his visionless and corrupt technocrats surrendered Zambia’s sovereignty to the capitalist-exploiters. The University of Zambia Development Studies lecturer, Frederick Mutesa wrote:

‘’The cold war African leaders that succeeded the founding fathers surrendered sovereignty in national policy-making to the Bretton Woods Institutions…..whereas the Nyereres, Kaundas and the Machels resisted the repulsive encroachment of foreign forces on the nations’ sovereignty, the Chilubas that replaced them chose to kiss neo-liberal policies in the morning, afternoon and at night.’’ (The Post 24th April 2004).
