APR coach Jimmy Mulisa says they achieved their first leg objective by holding hosts Zanaco on Saturday.

The Rwandans held Zanaco to a 0-0 result in Lusaka to hit the hosts hopes of making a promising start to their 2017 CAF Champions League campaign.

“There is still a long way to go, we still have a last leg to play. We just wanted to show that we were also champions in Rwanda and we are just waiting for the result leg in Rwanda and see what will happen,” Mulisa said.

“To be honest, with all due respect, Zanaco is a good team with a lot of experience.

“We will be cautions and see how we are going to finish but I believe it is going to be a very tough game.”

The two sides will meet this weekend in Kigali to decide who goes through to next month’s first round.

Female students should stop cooking meals for their boyfriends-Nkandu Luo

FEMALE students in higher learning institutions should stop cooking meals for their boyfriends because they are in school to learn.

Minister of Higher Education Nkundu Luo is disappointed that female students in some higher learning institutions have added extra responsibilities to their academic time-table.

Professor Luo, who surprised some students at Kwame Nkrumah University in Kabwe with her visit to one of the libraries as they were studying, said female students should take their education very seriously.

“What I know is you come to school to learn and not to cook. Anybody who is doing that must stop, pay attention to school,” Prof Luo said.

Prof Luo, who shared with the students her brief academic journey, also said Government will not condone lecturers who resort to having relationships with students.

Prof Luo said female students should guard against being lured into relationships by their lecturers.

“If there are any lecturers that want you, anyone should pick up the phone and report to me so that I phone your vice chancellor (Racheal Kabeta),” she said, and proceeded to give the students her mobile number after they demanded for it.

Prof Luo, who was accompanied by Central Province Minister Sydney Mushanga, Ministry of Higher Education director in the department of vocation education and training Muzano Simumba and Dr Kabeta said students in higher learning institutions should “jack up and take the space”.

The first female professor in Zambia has encouraged female students to aim high and not end at getting degrees.

“There is nothing exclusive for men, women can do anything. Boys should stop making girls to cook for you,” she said.

Prof Luo, who also visited Mulungushi University in Kapiri Mposhi and Kabwe Institute of Technology in Kabwe, challenged women to show that they are capable of doing many things in different spheres of life.

And Government has collected K19 million after the introduction of human resource and skills development levy, Prof Luo has said, reports Nkole Mulambia in Ndola

Prof Luo said the levy which is administered by Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) is aimed at promoting skills development in Technical Education, Vocational Training and Entrepreneurship Training (TEVET) institutions.

“Within the month of January this year, we have collected K19 million from the levy. We are compelling the private sector to give back to the skills development. This is law and money has started coming in. We are just putting in place modalities of management to monitor the usage of the money,” she said.

She was speaking when she addressed lecturers at NORTEC in Ndola last Friday. Prof Luo was touring institutions on the Copperbelt and Central provinces.

And in Kitwe, Mwila Ntambi reports that Prof Luo has directed management at the Copperbelt University (CBU) to come up with a programme for students to participate in cleaning their hostels and surroundings at least once a month.

Speaking to Journalists after she toured CBU Riverside campus in Kitwe yesterday, Prof Luo said she was disappointed with the way students were keeping their hostels.

She said the hanging litter bins and clothes on walls gave a bad impression about CBU especially to first-time visitors at the institution.

Today’s Message: Ask Big

6

Today’s Scripture

“Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”
(Psalm 2:8, NIV)

Ask Big

God doesn’t want us to just barely get by in life. He wants us to thrive and experience the fullness of His blessing. Not only does He want to meet our needs, He wants us to be in a position to reach out and help meet the needs of others, too. When we pray and ask God for something, it opens a supernatural door. Our faith gives God something to work with. Faith is what pleases Him. Faith moves mountains. Did you know that it pleases God when we pray bold prayers and ask Him for big things? God loves it when we step outside of the realm of the possible and totally believe what He can do. With God, all things are possible!

Today, get bold with your prayers. Ask God for big things. Believe that He is working behind the scenes on your behalf. Put your faith to work because God is faithful. He has big things in store for you, and He says to ask Him!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, today I come to You with an attitude of faith and expectancy. You said that if I ask anything according to Your will, it will be done. So I thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life and believe for big things in 2017 in Jesus’ name! Amen.”

The Center for Reproductive Health Education (CRHE) has refuted claims by FDD Spokesperson Antonio Mwanza that the government and other stakeholders are distributing condoms and contraceptive pills in schools.

Center Executive Director Amos Mwale says all stakeholders in sexual education sector and the government through Ministries of Education and Health have sat and agreed on this matter.
Mr. Mwale says the statement issued by Mr. Mwanza is misleading and should not be taken seriously.

He explains in an interview with QTV News that what is happening is that pupils are only given information on how they can avoid getting pregnant which can lead to them dropping out of school.

Mr. Mwale says politicians should be talking about the pupils who have dropped out of schools as a result of getting pregnant and not issue unsubstantiated statements .

APR give Zanaco uphill battle to avoid early African exit

Zanaco’s hopes of emulating Zesco United’s success in the CAF Champions League are looking dim.

This is after Zambia’s representative in the 2017 CAF Champions League were held to a 0-0 home draw on Saturday at Nkoloma Stadium by APR of Rwanda.

Last season, Zesco set the standard when they became the first Zambian club to qualify to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Zanaco have not failed to advance in continental football since 2003 when Egyptian club Ismaily beat them 1-0 away in Alexandria to boot them out by the same aggregate scoreline.

Not even the return from trials at Russian club Spartak Moscow by striker Fashion Sakala could seriously threaten visiting APR.

And it was APR who showed their teeth first but Issa Bigirimana’s 27th minute free-kick came off the post.

Zanaco midfielder Saith Sakala then hit the outside netting in the 39th minute while Augustine Mulenga saw his 76th minute header gathered by APR goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure.

The two sides meet this weekend on February 18 in Kigali with the winner progressing to the first round to play either Young Africans from Tanzania or Ngaya of Comoros.

George Lwnadamina’s Young Africans are away on Sunday in Moroni.

The World Wide Fund for Nature Zambia (WWF Zambia) has commended First Lady Esther Lungu for her support towards positive climate action in Zambia.

WWF Zambia Country Director Dr. Nyambe Nyambe says Climate Change is a serious concern that is affecting Zambians on a daily basis.

Dr. Nyambe made the remarks when officials from his office paid a courtesy call on the First Lady at State House on Thursday.

He says the country has seen first-hand the severe consequences of climate change noting the unpredictable weather patterns that have characterized the last two years.

“You will agree that there has been poor rainfall pattern over the last few years while this year we are facing potential floods; this has had grave effects on the Country’s energy production and agriculture output among other sectors,” he said.

Dr. Nyambe further highlighted the importance of taking positive climate action such as exploring renewable and sustainable energy as a compliment to hydroelectric power for sustainable development.

And Mrs. Lungu lamented that the effects of climate change are felt the most by mothers and girls who are primary caregivers at household level.

“Mothers and girls are forced to spend a lot of time fetching firewood for cooking or exposed to dangerous fumes from charcoal Because of the energy crisis and this is to the detriment of other activities that would empower them such as education,” she said.

She also noted that Climate Change has affected farmers which has resulted in dwindling yields in the past two years or having their crops washed away by heavy downpour this year.

The First lady commended WWF Zambia for its efforts towards raising awareness on Climate Change particularly through its Earth Hour initiative.

Meanwhile, WWF Zambia Head of Communications and Marketing Eneya Phiri who was also part of the delegation to State House says the First Lady’s support towards Earth Hour 2017 is very encouraging.
Mr. Phiri said Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative aimed at creating public awareness by encouraging people to take responsibility towards a sustainable future.

“We paid a courtesy call on the First Lady to leverage her support towards #EarthHour17. Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative aimed at creating awareness of people taking responsibility towards a sustainable future. We made the case that Climate Change is a real issue and given recent weather trends. we are clearly facing its impacts in Zambia,” Mr Phiri said.

“In line with this year’s theme for Earth Hour ‘Shine a light on Climate Action’, we believe everyone has a role to play in taking steps to addressing Climate Change! The First Lady is committed to ensuring that her office, working with government departments and other stakeholders, mitigates the harsh consequences of climate change especially on women and children.”

He says the theme for this year ‘Shine a Light on Climate Action’ is very opportune given that the country is beginning to realize the full impacts of Climate Change.

Millions of people around the world will be celebrating Earth Hour on 25th March 2017 and WWF Zambia will be working with various stakeholders to raise awareness on energy conservation and Climate action.

The Zambia National Blood Transfusion Services (ZNBTS) has said that the Copperbelt Province has a blood deficit of 10,000 units, with increased road traffic accidents, among other factors, being cited as one of the triggers for the spike in the demand for blood.

ZNBTS regional manager Masiku Phiri said his organisation needed at least 30,000 units of blood for it to be self-sufficient and working on boosting the reserves.

“The demand for blood in the province has increased due to the increase in road traffic accidents. There are also a lot of people, such as young children, pregnant women and accident victims that need blood,” he said.

Dr Phiri said this during a blood donation session at the Dangote Cement Plant in Masaiti District during the week where he thanked the employees for helping to boost the national blood bank.

He said the gesture by employees at the cement manufacturing company would help the institution reach the target of 30,000 units.

Dangote Cement chief executive officer Desmond Maharaj said the blood donation was part of the corporate social responsibility of serving communities.

Mr Maharaj said management was sensitising workers on the importance of donating blood and they were willing to donate on a quarterly basis.

President Edgar Lungu has urged Zambians not to depend on foreigners to develop the country.

President Lungu says it is only Zambians who can develop the country and not anyone else.

Speaking when he addressed workers at Kawambwa Tea Estates in Kawambwa, President Lungu said Zambians must always work towards developing the nation.

ZNBC’s Michael Kaumba reports from Kawambwa that the President who toured ZAFFICO Plantations and the Tea Estates said it is allright to attract investment and look at foreign models in developing the nation.

Earlier, ZAFFICO Chief Executive Officer Frightone Sichone said his firm is looking forward to supplying ZESCO limited with poles which the power firm is currently importing.

Mr Sichone said his firm is not asking for government handouts and is ready to add value to timber.

He also thanked government for revamping the Kawambwa Tea Estates saying the move will soon start paying dividends.

And Luapula Province Minister Nickson Chilangwa said the government is committed to creating wealth and jobs for the local people.

Meanwhile in an another development, Northern Province Minister Brian Mundubile says the country’s development goals cannot be attained in the absence of a professional and committed workforce.

Mr. Mundubile says Zambia needs a dedicated and professional work-force if meaningful development is to be realised.

Speaking when he addressed civil servants and other stakeholders in Mungwi District, Mr Mundibile noted that failure to uphold professional ethics by public service workers hampers development.

He said this usually triggers conflict between workers and the communities they serve..

And Mr. Mundubile has urged government heads of departments to be resourceful and innovative in managing their departments.

Meanwhile, civil servants in Mungwi assured the Provincial Minister that they will remain committed to duty.

The workers said this through their representative James Simpungwe.
