By Benedict Tembo

Rose Nkandu, a trader of Chingola’s Kasompe township has every readon to be joyful.
Ms Nkandu shares the joy with several other residents of Chingola and beyond, of a phenomenal reduction in the price of mealie meal.

The resumption of mealie meal production by Zambia National Service (ZNS) in Chingola District has influenced a drastic reduction in the price of the staple commodity in the Copperbelt Province.

A 25 kilogramme of breakfast mealie meal which was costing around K320, is now fetching at K195.
ZNS, which is running Mussi Milling under a joint venture with the Kazenene family, has flooded the market with the Eagles brand of mealie meal and stabilised the price of the commodity.

Albina Mwansa who plies her trade in Chingola’s Chiwempala township, testified that both breakfast and roller meal manufacturered by Mussi Milling is a real deal. Her joy is shared by Chingola mayor Jonathan Kangombe, who is happy with the positive intervention ZNS has made through its Eagles mealie meal brand.
Mr Kangombe noted that consumers in Chingola and beyond now have a choice between the expensive mealie meal and the reasonably priced commodity by ZNS.

He said the gesture by ZNS has seen workers who were laid off during the hiatus being recalled. ZNS Liaison officer at Mussi Milling Major Suwilanji Sikombe noted the overwhelming demand for the Eagle brand as traders are coming from all parts of the Copperbelt. ZNS is offering the 25 kilogramme bag of breakfast at K185 wholesale price while roller meal is at K160.

Major Sikombe said Mussi Milling currently produces 3,000×25 kilogrammes bags of mealie meal per day.
He said the milling plant can produce up to 3,800 bags per day.

Speaking during the flagging of the milling plant last month, Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo said Government has placed a high premium on stabilising mealie- meal prices across the country through such ventures.
Mr Matambo said the partnership is cardinal because it will not only add to the variety of mealie- meal brands on the market, but will also make it available to the people of the Copperbelt at an affordable price.
He said the flagging off of the sale of Eagle mealie-meal will go a long way in addressing the situation and fulfilling Government’s resolve of providing cheaper Mealie- meal to its citizens.

Speaking at the same occasion, ZNS Deputy Commander Major General Reuben Mwewa said ZNS was committed to supplementing the Government’s efforts of producing affordable Mealie-meal.

Maj. Gen. Mwewa explained that the Government through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) had allocated 5, 000 metric tonnes of maize to ZNS to produce Eagle breakfast and roller meal at the Milling Plant in Chongwe, Monze, and Mpika.

“ZNS is always ready to work with the local private sector to help better the lives of the citizens,” he said.

Kapasa Makasa students riot

11

Students at Kapasa Makasa University in Chinsali district have staged a riot following the death of their fellow student who died in unclear circumstances yesterday.

Kapasa Makasa University Assistant Registrar in charge of Public Relations and Administration Tabitha Nkomeshya said the death of 20-year-old David Mbale, a first-year Animal Science student from Ndola who died yesterday after being found unconscious in his room, has fueled the riots at the University.

Ms Nkomeshya, who confirmed the incident  in Chinsali today, said Mbale died on Sunday,  August 13,  after he came back from attending a church service.

She said his roommate later found David unresponsive on his bed after which they rushed him to the campus clinic where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

“Our health practitioners tried their best, but it was unfortunate that it was too late,” she said.

Ms Nkomeshya further stated that the body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary awaiting for post-mortem to be conducted on him.

She has since appealed to the students to remain calm and desist from the riotous behaviour, stressing that the University administration is equally saddened over the death of the student.

Kapasa Makasa University Students Union (KAMUSU) president, Brian Bwalya has bemoaned the lack of quality healthcare services at the University.

Mr Bwalya said the death of their colleague could have been avoided if there was a prompt response towards health care emergencies.

He stated that there is a need for the University to immediately procure an ambulance in order to urgently address emergency health matters to avoid such deaths.

“In January, we lost a student owing to lack of an ambulance, we cannot continue to live like animals and we will not open that road until we see an ambulance here,” he stated.

The students blocked the Great North Road near the entrance of the University by burning tyres, causing a jam in the flow of traffic.

Kasama street vendors removed

4

A combined team of state and Council Police have swung into action and removed trading stands for street vendors who operate from the Central Business District (CDF) in Kasama.

The exercise which started around 05:00 hours was aimed at eradicating street vendors from the streets.

The Police are now patrolling the central business district to ensure that no one is allowed back on the street.

Kasama Municipal Council Assistant Public Relations Manager, Charity Chaiwila said the move to remove street vendors is aimed at restoring sanity in town.

Ms Chaiwila explained that the local authority had earlier engaged stakeholders who include traders on the need for vendors to move from the streets.

She said the vendors were given an ultimatum to vacate the streets by August 10,2023 adding that the team has since moved in to eject those who were not willing to move on their own.

She said the local authority had secured enough trading spaces in the markets where the vendors will be allocated.

“The local authority has enough spaces in existing markets which are not occupied,” she disclosed.

Ms Chaiwila has also warned the public that the local authority will not tolerate any vending in the central business district.

Ms Chaiwila has also thanked all those who complied with the directive to vacate the streets.

Ms Chaiwila said this in an interview with ZANIS in Kasama today.

And a local businessman in Kasama has commended the Kasama Municipal Council for enforcing the law to remove street vendors.

Francis Mutale who runs a business complex said the presence of street vendors in Kasama had compromised the sanity situation in town.

He called on all stakeholders to work with the local authority in restoring sanity in town.

Mr Mutale said it was difficult to drive around town because street vendors had occupied the drive ways.

He also advised politicians not to politicise the move by the local authority but to support the move for the betterment of the people in the area.

Meanwhile, some affected street vendors have vowed to return to the streets.

Moses Mwenya said he has been in the markets before and business is not as good as it is in the streets because people prefer to buy from the streets than going to the markets.

Mr Mwenya appealed to the local authority to find a place within town where the council can allocate them space to be trading from.

The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has commended the National Heart Hospital for recording 95 percent success rate on surgeries it has so far worked on.

HPCZ Public Relations Manager, Terry Musonda says this a clear demonstration that the country has competent local human resources, especially that the hospital conducted over 60 operations within the country.

Mr Musonda was speaking in an interview in Lusaka today.

He said previously all the operations were conducted in different countries which was expensive for most patients.

“As a nation we should be proud and as a regulator we are very much happy. This is commendable,” he said.

He said heart surgeries are complicated and for the country to carry such operations it speaks volumes that the nation is improving access to quality health care services.
The National Heart Hospital commenced heart operations   two years ago.

Samukonga still a doubt for Budapest World Athletics Championship

4

Commonwealth Gold Medalist Muzala Samukonga’s fate to take part in the World Athletics Championship slated   for Budapest, Hungary from the 20th to 27th August is still doubtful.

Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) General Secretary Davison Mungambata says Samukonga has been receiving treatment from three medical doctors from Germany and the United Kingdom who confirmed that the process of healing is going smoothly.

Speaking in a telephone interview , Mungambata says that a Physiotherapist from the United Kingdom is scheduled to attend to Samukonga on August 15 to make a final assessment that will ascertain if the athlete is ready to compete in a tournament.

Samukonga got injured after he suffered a hamstring injury during the Diamond League in Poland last month.

Meanwhile Mungambata disclosed that 400 meters sprinters Niddy Mingilishi and Patrick Nyambe’s participation at the World Athletics Championship has been ruled out.

If Samukonga is cleared by doctors, he will join Rhodah Ndlovu in representing Zambia at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest.

Mungambata revealed that sprinters Nyambe and Mingilishi missed the final World Athletics compilation for Budapest after their qualifying times were overtaken by athletes from French speaking countries who competed in the latest qualifying championships.

Tragic Elephant Attack Claims Life of Woman in Kazungula District, Adding to Rising Concerns

10

A somber cloud hangs over Machenje Village in Chief Mukuni’s jurisdiction, Kazungula District, following a devastating incident in which a 32-year-old woman lost her life to a lone elephant attack. The unfortunate event marks the second human fatality by elephant within a span of just one week. Earlier, a security guard in his 70s met a similar fate in Livingstone.

The victim of this recent tragedy, Threaza Simata, was accompanied by her husband and a family friend as they journeyed back from a funeral within the village, around 18:00 hours. The sudden encounter with the charging elephant left little room for escape. Oliver Sikiti, Threaza Simata’s husband, recounted the terrifying moment when they realized the peril they were facing. He suspects that his wife’s white attire may have drawn the elephant’s attention.

In an interview with ZNBC News, Oliver Sikiti expressed his heartache and shared that despite his efforts to intervene, he could not prevent the fatal outcome. While he sought help, the elephant’s swift and ruthless attack claimed Threaza Simata’s life.

The tragedy has left the local community in shock and fear, prompting Village Headman Kavai Mundila to call upon the Department of National Parks and Wildlife for assistance in addressing the escalating elephant-related incidents. The villagers of Machenje are grappling with the constant threat posed by frequent elephant visits that encroach upon residential areas.

Anthony Munzabwa, the Manager of Njovu African Wildlife Conservation, shed light on the challenging human-elephant conflict in the area. He explained that the encroachment occurs as elephants venture into residential zones in search of sustenance. Munzabwa assured ongoing efforts to sensitize communities near the Mosi-oa-tunya National Park, aimed at mitigating conflicts and enhancing coexistence.

Netizens Roast Ignorant Kalaba!

16

The other day, leader of an obscure political enterprise going by the name – Citizens First, Harry Kalaba, could not escape the fury and frustrations of social media fanatics for crossing the line and pretending, or attempting to demonstrate he is hewn from the same fabric as Rocket Scientists by claiming the much touted Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is nothing, but a scam!

According to a News Diggers Newspaper story carried on their Facebook page, Kalaba insisted that the K1.6 million they used to receive as CDF when he was member of parliament was doing more tangible things than the current K28 million which only exist on paper. He said this when he featured on a Camnet TV programme, Tuesday.

However, some alert netizens, obviously more conversant with current affairs, couldn’t take Kalaba’s insinuations lightly. They immediately went for his throat! Social media enthusiast and fervent blogger, Haggai Muzeya, was first to come out with guns blazing! He dismissed Kalaba’s assertions as cheap politicking and mere propaganda; further citing a report on the impact of CDF around the nation as compiled by the CIC press team. “In order to enable everyone benefit from the national cake,107 groups have received grants amounting to K2.1 million while 39 beneficiaries have received K3.2 Million in Mongu. To boost trade in the area, the Mandanga market was completed through CDF at a cost of over K1 million and will be handed over to the community soon,” the report states in part.

“News Diggers, you claim to be “the home of investigative journalism in Zambia”. Did you validate this assertion from Kalaba, for it to be news?” wondered Mbinji Mufalo. “I subscribe to News Diggers and it is the first news media I read every day, because ND is an appreciated news media. However, lately it seems you are slowly sliding into a “he/she said yaketi yaketi” news media.”

Mundia Lubinda seemed to be on the same page as Mufalo. “How can a newspaper write such nonsense when they can see what’s obtaining in the constituencies e.g. procurement of earth moving equipment, construction of bridges and schools, disbursement of grants and loans etc and yet you give room to Kalaba to brag that the K1.6m was doing great things!” he wondered.

Angelina Angelic chipped in and quipped that “atleast it’s a scam which has reached all constituencies unlike the K1.6m which was only available in previous regimes strongholds and this time around only sharp and intelligent MPs like Sunday Chanda, Clement Andeleki etc are able to utilise the CDF.”

On the other hand, Sandra Chileya advised Kalaba to consider visiting Kanchibiya Constituency just as an example so that he can see, “how CDF is being effectively applied in the area.”

While Kaji observed that HH has mesmerised the likes of Kalaba with his spectacular performance such that they are now unable to pinpot Achilles heels on which to hanker their criticism, others such as Mwila C. Bwanga agreed that CDF is indeed creating an impact in certain parts of the country with Yamikani Daka remarking that only incompetent MPs including some in the government and those from certain disgraced opposition political parties are failing to utilize CDF to deliver development in their constituencies.

“If Kalaba bothered to step out of his comfort zone for once; he’ll certainly appreciate that CDF has triggered development, especially in rural areas,” wrote Zak Zim. In apparent agreement with him, Collins Munthali stated that HH has indeed fixed the rural areas; what is remaining is just fixing the urban areas and the likes of Kalaba will be left with their mouths agape!

Apart from this, Lisa Miselo cautioned the opposition leader to stop pretending and acknowledge the development taking shape in different parts of the country. “We have witnessed what once were mere thatched schools being transformed into modern infrastructure. Where’s the money to finance such projects coming from, if I may ask?” She mused.

The tone of the debate then changes afterwards with most bloggers not having any kind words for the CF leader.

Mwansa Rampa Have who claims to have been to Bahati where Kalaba once served as area MP retorted, “this guy is a joker! He did nothing for the people of bahati. Even the previous MP who stood on his party ticket was voted out by the people of bahati.”

“What is our former foreign affairs minister smoking for him to fail to comprehend what is taking place around the country?” wondered Dugan Chisense while Eugene Ngosa described the issues Kalaba was raising as childish and laughable; “no wander he failed to develop Bahati constituency!”

Others such as Henry Mulenga dismissed Kalaba as an unwise individual who has failed to establish that his Malawian mentor and pastor, Bushiri, is simply a magician busy at work hoodwinking gullible members of the public, while Zack Dony added that, “Kalaba alaba bwangu.” He concluded by stating that anybody who passed through PF has a mental problem!

“The Citizens First leader is simply a confused and frustrated chap!” exclaimed Bernard Mtayachalo as Newton Kayumba described him as worse than the late Chama Chakomboka. “I wonder why his brains fail to coordinate with his mouth at critical times.”

The likes of Mumbi Mukuka took it upon themselves to ‘educate’ Kalaba that a total of 32 projects have been completed in Chinsali under CDF so far; including loans, grants, school bursaries, desks and skills development.

Interestingly, Sylvester Nsofwa bemoaned that, “If there’s a President in Zambia that people have to come to hate with a passion and for no apparent reason, it’s HH.
Whatever he does essentially has no approval from the so called opposition. They harbour grudges against the president for a number of reasons: being Tonga, being highly educated, being successful, being smart, being a family man with no record of infidelity and lastly winning the elections with a landslide!”

Not being one to disappoint; Local Government & Rural Development Minister, Hon. Gary Nkombo, stepped in and delivered a knockout punch. He emphasised that the Citizens First leader should strive to have even one MP for his party who will help him understand what’s going on in government.

“Even a grade two pupil would know that K28 million CDF can do more things than K1.6 million!” Nkombo, fondly referred to as Mazembe by many scoffed.

7

Senior Chief Ishindi, of the Lunda people in Zambezi district, has voiced a compelling request to the government, urging the consideration and establishment of a university within North Western Province. The traditional leader emphasized that the province is ripe for a university, which would alleviate the financial burden of sending students to institutions in other regions.

Speaking from his esteemed Mukandankunda royal palace, Senior Chief Ishindi passionately articulated the need for a university to foster local education and provide accessible opportunities for higher learning. He underscored the potential benefits, such as boosting educational attainment, encouraging local talent, and driving regional development.

Additionally, the chief proposed a strategic move to further equitable development within Zambezi district. He called on the government to consider the delimitation of Zambezi East Constituency into Zambezi North and Zambezi South. Such a step, he argued, would facilitate a more even distribution of development initiatives throughout the district.

These recommendations were shared during a meeting with Local Government and Rural Development Minister Gary Nkombo, who visited Senior Chief Ishindi’s palace. The discussions took place in anticipation of the forthcoming 38th Lunda Lubanza Traditional ceremony of the Lunda people in Zambezi district.

Minister Tang assured Zambian farmers of a guaranteed market, emphasizing that China is eager to purchase substantial quantities of soya beans, regardless of the volume.

As the first Zambian to achieve a world record in athletics, Matete stressed the importance of nurturing young talents from an early age by promoting sports in schools. Matete highlighted the evolving landscape of sports, noting that it has become a lucrative industry capable of absorbing numerous youths, thereby positively contributing to the nation’s economic growth.

Chairperson of the Ibenga girls’ fun run fundraising initiative, Mwaka Siluonde, expressed gratitude to Matete for his significant support. Siluonde, a former pupil of Ibenga girls, explained that the fundraising drive targets 1.2 million kwacha to revamp the school’s kitchen facilities.

5

North-western Province Permanent Secretary Gladson Katambi has urged the council in Mufumbwe district to facilitate the easy acquisition of land for public service workers.

Speaking when he addressed Civil Servants in Mufumbwe district, Retired Colonel Katambi said this helps them adequately prepare for retirement and curb destitution and lack of proper accommodation.

The Permanent Secretary said public service workers have limited time to do other things hence the need for the council to expedite processes for them to acquire land in the district.

“These guys spend most of their time in the offices, so Sir there must be a deliberate policy like I am telling your friends where you have new land give them an opportunity to also acquire land”.

Maiko Zulu Encourages Fred M’membe Amid Arrest Controversy”

Activist and musician Maiko Zulu has advised Socialist Party President Fred M’membe not to be afraid following his recent arrest and detention in police custody.

Police in Lusaka last week arrested and charged M’membe for the offence of Libel Contrary to Section 191 of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia

Police further warned and cautioned Dr. M’membe on an alleged offence of Communication of certain Information contrary to Section 4 Subsection 3 of the State Security Act Chapter 111.

But Zulu said he expected Dr. M’membe and the Socialist Party to have a rough ride under the UPND regime.

“When Zambians changed government in 2021, there was relief following the handing back of Prime Television broadcasting license which was suspended by the government. This was done through a welcomed public pronouncement by the Head of State Mr Hakainde Hichilema. However, the olive branch extended to Prime TV fell short of reaching The Post Newspaper which was earlier closed under the Edgar Lungu rule,” Zulu said.

“It was clear from then that Dr Fred M’membe and the Socialist Party were going to have yet another rough ride under the new regime and that is why it’s not surprising today that M’membe seems to be perceived as an ‘enemy of the system’ who risks facing a lot of trials outside the Courts,” said the reggae music specialist.

Dr. M’membe’s arrest is in connection with some statements he publishes on his Facebook page.

“With intent to defame, did publish an article and circulated it on social media to say that fired cop dies of depression and further did allege that the deceased Mr, Moses Kabamba a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police who was a Divisional Criminal Investigations officer for North-Western Division, had risen Blood pressure and died after he heard that the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Operations, Mr, Milner Muyambango had refused to obey instructions given by the Solicitor General Marshal Muchende, to introduce back on the payroll, retired police officers as a way to have their matter settled out of court.

The suspect has been detained in custody and will appear in court soon,” read a police report issued by spokesperson Rae Hamoonga

By Derrick Silimina

The mining industry’s safety record has raised alarm bells, with 12 fatalities and 14 perilous accidents reported by the Ministry of Mines by June. Paul Kabuswe, the Mines and Minerals Development Minister, voiced deep concern over the surge in accidents compared to the previous year. He issued a stern call to stakeholders and mine operators, stressing the urgency of prioritizing worker safety and adhering unwaveringly to mine safety protocols.

Kabuswe highlighted the role of the mining sector, represented by the chamber, in setting an industry-wide example that instills confidence in safe mining practices.

Speaking at the 16th Intercompany Mining First-Aid Competition in Kalumbila District, Kabuswe commended participants for their remarkable first aid skills and stressed the intrinsic link between a secure workplace and healthier, more productive employees. He underscored the broader impacts, including contributions to sustainable development and a favorable industry reputation. He reiterated his message from the previous year, asserting, "Occupational health and safety is not negotiable! We all have a responsibility to guarantee the safety and health of our workforce.

FQM Trident Mining Limited was lauded for hosting the event, under the theme Learn First Aid You Never Know When You Need It. Chamber of Mines President Godwin Beene echoed Kabuswe’s concerns, emphasizing that non-affiliated mining operations were responsible for the majority of fatalities. Beene urged the Ministry of Mines to engage these companies with the Chamber of Mines, providing access to vital safety programs.

The 2023 Intercompany Mining First-Aid Competition showcased over 20 teams, with Lubambe Copper Mine Support Services securing the top position with an impressive 76.93%. KCM Geology followed closely in second place with 75.75%. Teams from Mopani Copper Mine and KCM Nchanga mine secured third and fourth places, respectively.

Chamber of Mines President Beene’s call for collaboration echoed, as he urged the integration of non-affiliated mining operations into safety initiatives. The competition celebrated the dedication of high-performing teams to safety and emergency response. Kabuswe’s message resonated throughout – ensuring safety is a collective responsibility that leads to a healthier workforce, increased productivity, and a more resilient industry.
