Catholic Bishops appeals to leaders to protect children from suffering the trauma and life-long effects of the humanitarian crises

0

The Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) has appealed to leaders to do everything possible to mitigate the impact and protect the children from suffering the trauma and life-long effects of the humanitarian crises.

On the occasion to mark the day of the African Child which falls on the 16th of June every year, ZCCB Bishop Director for Education and Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults and Minors, Rt. Rev. Patrick Chisanga O.F.M. Conv, said that civic, political, traditional, religious leaders as well as individual families leaders need to do everything possible to mitigate the impact and protect the children from suffering the trauma and life-long effects of the humanitarian crises such as floods, droughts, health crises as well as human-made disasters that are often brought about through armed conflicts and dictatorial political regimes.

Bishop Chisanga observed that it is in such situations that the abuse of children and violation of their rights are heightened and often unchecked.

Rt. Rev. Chisanga has further observed that abject poverty, limited access to education, poor health, food and nutrition, inadequate supply of clean water, poor housing, child labour and child marriages are other concomitant challenges that negatively impact on the welfare of the African Child.

Bishop Chisanga who is also the local ordinary for Mansa Diocese said that the vulnerability of the African Child has been worsened further by the current novel global health crisis of the covid-19 that has exposed child to more abuses and increased poverty due illness and death of the caregiver.

He reiterated Pope Francis’ appeal for “an all-out battle against the abuse of minors both sexually and in other areas, on the part of all authorities and individuals.” The Holy Father made this appeal to Presidents of Bishops’ Conferences in February 2019 on the protection of minors.

Bishop Chisanga also said that the Catholic Bishops in Zambia, on their part, have made a clear commitment to promoting an enlightened community where the rights of a child are upheld, respected and safeguarded.

He added that as Africa celebrates the day of the African Child this year, the Catholic Church in Zambia would like to see an environment where every child is loved, safe and cared for.

“Every child in Africa should have access to good and quality education, in line with the aspiration number 6 of the African charter on the rights and welfare of the child. The church is fully aware that a lot of effort has been put in towards attaining this dream. however, there is a lot of work yet to be done, “he said.

“In order to complement the efforts of the government, the Catholic Church in Zambia pledges to continue providing quality education for all children, with particular focus on the most vulnerable in our urban as well as the remote parts of the country. The Church further commits to continue giving the children an integrated learning experience that maximizes their physical, emotional, social and spiritual qualities and abilities,” Bishop Chisanga added.

The day of the African Child celebrations date back to 16th June 1991 when it was institutionalized by the then organisation of African unity.

This year’s theme is: “30 Years after the Adoption of the Charter: Accelerate the Implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa Fit for Children.”

Additional consignment of the COVID-19 dose of AstraZeneca vaccine expected in Zambia this month

14

Zambia is expected to receive an additional consignment of the COVID-19 dose of AstraZeneca vaccine later this month and another consignment in August 2021, Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Kennedy Malama has announced.

Dr. Malama says the government has already finalized the requirements under the COVAX facility and the donation of Sinopharm doses by the Chinese government.

Speaking during the COVID-19 update in Lusaka, Dr. Malama urged all those who have received their first dose of AstraZeneca not to worry as he guaranteed that the government has secured the second dose which will commence next week.

Keeping in mind the sharp rise of COVID-19 positive cases during the third wave, Dr. Malama explained that the vaccination programme remains a key pillar among the nine-pronged response.

“The pause in the vaccination campaign has given us ample time to prepare for the roll out. We are also aware of a number of key questions being asked by the public regarding the vaccine. Top most being the date when the second dose of AstraZeneca will be administered,” Dr. Malama stated.

The Permanent Secretary announced that Zambia has recorded the highest number of deaths at 28 cases in the last 24 hours.

He advised that with the alarming numbers, calls for people to put all their different opinions and beliefs aside and bind together to effectively respond to the current situation.

“The breakdown of the new deaths by Province and facility is as follows: Lusaka province 20, with Levy Mwanawasa hospital recording 10 deaths, University Teaching Hospital(UTH )three , Maina Soko two, Kanyama First Level two, Chelstone one, Chawama First Level one and Chirundu one.

He said Copperbelt province recorded six deaths where Kitwe Teaching Hospital had five deaths and Roan Antelope one.

He added that in the Southern province, Livingstone and Choma recorded one each.

Dr. Malama revealed that the country has continued to record a surge in COVID-19 cases with 2,690 new confirmed cases out of 11,999 tests conducted, giving a 22.4 percent positivity in the last 24 hours.

He indicated that the cases were reported from all the ten provinces with Lusaka recording the highest number of 869 cases, thereby, bringing the cumulative number of positive cases recorded to date at 115,824 cases countrywide.

Dr. Malama disclosed that there are currently 14,485 active cases, of whom 13,764 are under community management and 721 are admitted to COVID-19 isolation facilities of which 195 were newly admitted patients within the last 24 hours.

He said a total of 901 discharges were made from both the COVID-19 isolation facilities and home management, which brings the cumulative number of recoveries to 99,895.

Among those currently under admission, Dr. Malama stated that about 485 are on Oxygen therapy and 101 (14%) are in critical condition.

The Permanent Secretary, informed that health facilities are now operating at 100 percent bed occupancy and also still mobilising more bed space.

He however, noted that the 766 health workers who were recently employed by the government are now reporting to their respective stations to join the COVID 19 fight and in the provision of routine health services.

He said some multilaterals and organisations have also committed to supporting recruitment of extra health personnel to strengthen the response towards the virus.

Dr. Malama urged Health Care workers to focus on caring for those coming to the facilities during the critical period of the pandemic.

The Permanent Secretary has sternly warned some unscrupulous people in both the public and private sector who are taking advantage of people’s desperation and anxiety for their own personal gain, charging exorbitant amounts for COVID-19 testing among other malpractice.

He reiterated that a team of Permanent Secretaries met to review the current measures to curb COVID 19 in the country and appropriate recommendations have been made and the nation will be communicated to.

ZIFLP gives community forest group K800, 000 for bee-keeping

14

The Zambia Integrated Forestry Landscape Project (ZIFLP) has given 800,000 Kwacha subgrant to the Malambalala Community Forest Management Group in Kasenengwa District for bee-keeping.

The sub grant will be used to procure beehives for honey production as an alternative source of livelihood that is less destructive to the environment.

ZANIS reports that Chipata District Forestry Officer, (DFO) Emma Sakala, has confirmed the disbursement of the funds.

Ms Sakala said the community group has already procured 350 beehives after receiving 25 percent of the sub-grant from ZIFLP.

She disclosed that community members from 25 villages surrounding the 466 hectares of Malambala forest, were trained in forestry management and bee keeping, sensitised on the consequences of indiscriminate cutting down of trees and are now contributing to managing the forest.

She said following the ZIFLP empowerment, the community group is now promoting efforts to stop indiscriminate cutting down of trees and safeguard the 466 hectares Malambalala community forest.

Ms Sakala explained Malambala has in the past experienced a lot of tree cutting for charcoal burning and some agriculture practices that were harmful to the environment.

“Some of these activities that were done by the people from Malambalala area led to some wild animals running away from the forest,” she said.

She stated the training in forest management and bee keeping has somehow reduced destructive human activities in the local forest and that there are signs of some animals returning back to their repaired habitat.

“This safeguarding of the Malambalala community forest will greatly benefit the local people a lot,” Ms Sakala said.

The District Forest Officer is happy that the community members have adequately accepted the initiative that ZIFLP has undertaken in the area and they are protecting the forest reserve based on the best guidelines of forest management.

“The community is ready to take care of the forest in Malambalala area, the initiative of the forest management is backed by the Forest Act Number 4 of 2015. The benefits from the community forest will be divided among the members of the CFMG in Malambalala area,” she said.

And Emmanuel Banda, a member of the Malambalala Community Forestry Management Group, is happy about the drastic reduction in charcoal burning attributed to conservation efforts being undertaken by the forest management team.

He said the area is currently receiving good rainfall because the trees in the community forest are protected.

Mr Banda commended Chief Madzimawe of the Ngoni Speaking People in Kasenengwa District for his role to ensure the community forest is protected from any harmful human activities.

And Malambalala forest management group treasurer, Olipa Phiri, said 50 people were trained in bee keeping and are now ready to venture into the activity.

She said the community forest management group has a target to supply honey to all parts of the country and beyond, adding that bee keeping is a viable business that can earn someone a lot of money than charcoal burning which only contributes to destroying the environment.

Thank you for Ending Load Shedding: “Zambia has lost productivity worth billions of dollars due to energy poverty”

31

By Johnstone Chikwanda

A few weeks ago, Zesco Senior Manager for Corporate Affairs Dr. John Kunda was hosted on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) TV1 19:00 hours news to give an update to the nation on the state of electricity supply. Using this media platform, Dr. Kunda eloquently informed the nation that load shedding has finally ended in Zambia.

Demand for energy has been increasing in Zambia every year. Not only has there been increased demand for electricity every year but also for fuel. According to national consumption statistics obtained from the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), annual fuel consumption has doubled over the past 10 years. This can only be attributed to national economic growth. Multiple research findings have axiomatically concluded that demand for energy is directly related to economic growth. Comparatively, national security is also directly related to energy security.

Zambia has for a long time experienced excruciating electricity rationing due to energy poverty. Energy poverty is a state of not having enough energy as and when it is needed any time. The bane of this energy poverty is attributed to inadequate investment in the sector over the past 30 years. As the economy grew, demand for energy concomitantly surged upwards thereby creating a vexatious and elusory demand-supply imbalance.

With the vagaries of climate change taking a toll effect on hydro power captive markets such as Zambia, the lessons harvested from prolonged hours of load shedding which lasted up to 16 hours a day will never be forgotten. Naturally, the electricity generation capacity of a country is built around its national arbitrage. Therefore, being consonantly situated in its endowed massive water bodies, Zambia is heavily dependent on hydro-electricity. To this end, the climate change impact has been axiomatic.

To turn around the status quo, energy sector reforms aimed at creating an attractive investment climate had to be launched. Energy sector reforms are a harbinger for improving energy security. Well crafted and implemented reforms can serve as an effective tool for repainting the canvas of a fledgling energy sector. This is what the Government of the Republic of Zambia has done over the past 10 years.

At the heart of the energy reforms lies a journey to remove costly and unhealthy subsidies, diversification and removing industry imperfections. Trapped in a trilemma, painful and difficult decisions which included electricity tariff upward adjustments by 75% in one year a couple of years ago had to be made and implemented. Currently, Zambia’s energy transition is being informed, guided, directed and mentored by the National Energy Policy of 2019, Electricity Act of 2019 and Energy Regulation Act of 2019.

In view of the foregoing, it is not shocking news that in 2020 Zambia attracted projected investment of $1.7 billion in the energy sector as announced by the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) last week. Indeed, energy sector reforms are serving as a plank for advancing the development of the sector. Solar power and coal-fired power plant have been commissioned. A plethora of off-grid installations has been concluded.

Not only that, but considerable donor funding from the World Bank, United Kingdom, United States of America, European Union and other bilateral support has been poured in Zambia’s energy nexus. One such support includes the World Bank funded Electricity Supply Access Project (ESAP) which has benefited thousands of households just to mention but a few. The entire off grid topography has changed in Zambia as some investors in off grid household solar installation business have connected hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries in different parts of the country.

Zambia’s energy story can not be told without mentioning vertically integrated power utility Zesco Limited. As a front runner at fostering energy security, it has invested heavily in modernizing and expanding its generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. Among the main projects concluded is the 750 MW Kafue Gorge Lower (KGL) plant; a game changer in Zambia’s energy fortune basket.

Kafue Gorge Lower is a legacy project which required very strong leadership on the part of those who occupy alpha positions both at national level and Zesco Limited. To this end, I wish to commend Government of Zambia under the watch of the current President Dr. Edgar. C. Lungu for driving this project to where it is today and for ending load shedding. I also wish to commend the Chinese Government for its role in this gigantic piece of energy infrastructure which straddle across the 1,576 km Kafue River.

It would be unfair for me not to commend Zesco management and staff for this power plant which will be commissioned this year according to the National Economic Recovery Plan for Zambia. Am very convinced that Zesco Managing Director; a former engineer at Africa’s biggest power utility company Eskom is a happy man not just for concluding the 750 MW KGL among many projects concluded but also for ensuring that load shedding has ended under his watch.

Ending load shedding is a very big achievement in a continent trapped in energy trilemma with over 600 million Africans with no access to clean energy. It qualifies for recognition and award. Zambia has lost productivity worth billions of United States Dollars over the past decades due to energy poverty. Therefore, gallant women and men who have immensely contributed to defeating load shedding need to be recognized. Not only has this feat been achieved but Government has undoubtedly placed Zambia on the path of becoming a leading net exporter of energy in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Ailing Nkana Seek Rebound at Zanaco

1

Nkana coach Beston Chambeshi admits they have reached the point of no return heading into Wednesdays FAZ Super League away date against Zanaco at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.

The former FAZ Super League champions have nine points left to fight for starting on Wednesday to try and ensure their survival.

Wednesday’s date also comes four days after Nkana’s promising three-match winning run was ended in Kafue by Young Green Eagles who beat them 3-2 to dent their survival hopes.

“We need to survive and we have seen the character in this team. The boys are not losing hope and we will see how we will handle the last three games,” a confident-sounding Chambeshi said.

“For sure we need to pick nine points in all the games.”

Nkana are fourth from bottom on 37 points and four points off the projected survival threshold where five other sides including their archrivals Power Dynamos are hovering around.

Meanwhile, for Zanaco, Wednesday is about cementing second place to make up for the heartbreak of Zesco United beating them in the race for the 2020/2021 league title with three games to spare.

There is also good news for Zanaco who will be with their big guns Moses Phiri and Roger Kola who have just returned from Chipolopolo’s June international friendly tour of Senegal, Benin and Sudan.

Phiri especially will be hoping to  extend his lead on the top scorers  chart that currently stands on 17 goals as the 2020/2021 FAZ Golden Boot comes into view in the last three games.

We will continue defending ourselves against PF aggression-UPND Youth Chairperson

The United Party for National Development (UPND) youths have vowed to continue defending themselves against any ruling PF aggression.

Addressing the Press at the UPND National Youth Command Center in Lusaka this morning, party National Youths Chairperson, Gilbert Liswaniso charged that nothing would stand in the way of the party’s quest to form a Government.

Mr. Liswaniso stressed that the UPND would ensure that the PF is not allowed to continue engaging in political stunts when it isn’t allowed to do so.

Liswaniso emphasized that the decision by the ECZ to ban roadshows across the country was aimed at washing the shame of the PF’s dwindling political fortunes.

Mr Liswaniso noted that it was unfair for ECZ to ban both the PF and UPND from campaigning when it was the former who had been perpetrating political violence against UPND.

A number of UPND National Youth officials including the national Secretary, Samuel Ngwira, deputy National Youth Chairperson, Trevor Mwiinde, national youth Spokesperson, Phinias Pumulo attended the event.

ZEMA working to address illegal sand mining in Magoye

3

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) is making strides towards addressing the issue of illegal sand mining in Magoye river in Southern province.

ZEMA Corporate Affairs Manager Friday Phiri said the agency is working with various partners such as the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation to deal with the issue of sand mining in Magoye area.

“We as ZEMA are working with partners such as the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation to come up with a comprehensive plan to address the issue,’’ he said

Mr. Phiri said ZEMA has noted that the issue of sand mining has become a livelihood venture for the local people in Magoye.

He said there is, therefore, need to find a balanced plan that will help local people transition from sand mining to other lucrative ventures.

“There is a process that has started which is called the protection and restoration which was developed by ZEMA and various cooperating partners. The idea is to come up with an alternative plan that will take away local people from sand mining so that the river remains protected,’’ he explained.

He added that the Magoye river has changed course due to sand mining activities in and around its basin, a situation that has resulted into the basin becoming shallow.

Mr. Phiri has since called on other environmental protection stakeholders such as the council to take part into coming up with a comprehensive plan that will help end the damage caused to the river.

Meanwhile, Mr. Phiri has disclosed that the new ZEMA e-platform has received positive feedback as clients are able use the platform to make payments.

He said clients are able to apply for licenses on the digital platform.

“The e-platform is live, members of the public are registering, and over 120 industry players are registered and interacting with us online which is a plus for the agency,’’ said Mr. Phiri.

He explained that the importance of the e-platform cannot be over emphasized as it helps people to work in a manner that can help reduce the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
