Chieftainess Kawaza of the Chewa people of Katete District in Eastern Province has called on Government to address churches that are misleading people from taking Anti Retrial Viral Therapy (ART).

Chieftainess Kawaza said the trend by certain churches to tell people who are on ART to stop taking medication was on an increase and was leading to loss of lives.

The Chieftainess was speaking during the commemoration of the World AIDS Day held under the theme ‘Ending AIDS by 2030 starts with me’.

“We are asking you Government, talk to these churches especially the mushrooming churches that are telling people to stop taking ARV medication. The pastor is taking meanwhile he is telling the people not to take that I will pray for you,” she said.

She said people were dying because of these men of ‘God’ who were misleading them by telling them they will be healed after being prayed for.

The Chieftainess also cautioned the public to refrain from stigmatizing those on ART as it was not only them affected but the whole nation was.

She said it was important that the public got to a point of seeing another person’s problem as their problem as well, because the AIDS pandemic was not just a battle for the infected but a battle for all.

The Chieftainess also urged women to refrain from cultural practices that increased the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

She said certain traditional practices that women engaged in, increased the chances of contracting the disease.

Chieftainess Kawaza said this in reference to the prevalence rate of the disease among women between the ages of 15-45 years old of which was at 1.08 percent compared to men who were at 0.33 percent.

Meanwhile, Katete District Commissioner (DC) Joseph Makukula said about 117, 958 people were tested for HIV/AIDS in Katete in 2016, and about 3, 109 tested positive.

“The cumulative figure of people in our district who are on ART stands at 9, 060. The above statistics are quiet high and worrying for a country like Zambia,” he said.

MMD Serenje Central Member of Parliament Maxwell Kabanda who is being courted by PF Secretary General Davis Mwila has come under fire from his party for allegedly enticing members to go with him to the PF.

Speaking when the National Executive Committee and Central Province Executive Committee of MMD which is on a tour of the Central province visited the district on Monday, Serenje District Chairperson Kennedy Kango accused the law maker of forgetting who took him to parliament.

Kango explained to the NEC that the party was finding it hard to reorganise Selenje District because the person they suffered for to take to parliament had not only neglected the party but he was busy confusing members that the two parties had merged hence they should officially be co-opted in the PF structures.

He explained that Kabanda was more interested in attending PF meetings as opposed to working with the people and the party that helped take him to parliament.

He urged the National Secretary to discipline Kabanda and ensure that he is put in ‘line’ before he completely destroys structures of the party.

In response; party National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda acknowledged the complaint saying he had hard so much about the happenings in the district and that the team was in the area to ensure that they get to the bottom of the matter.

He said now that he had head from the district and the province he would invite Kabanda to the party national office to get his side of the story because it would be improper to judge him when he was not present and had not presented his side.

He said the party will ensure that the misunderstandings are ironed out for the benefit of growing the party.

Meanwhile Chairperson for Elections in the MMD Gaston Sichilima told the district officials to be careful when selecting people to stand on the party ticket.

Sichilima said some people came to stand on the party ticket because they knew that they would work with hard working people who would deliver the seat because they know that the party was well organised at the grass root level which wins elections.

He said going forward party members should scrutinize the people they chose to put on the party ticket.

Sichilima also urged members of the party to stop complaining when they are approached by PF officials to join them but to take that as a sign that the two parties were separate entities with different ideologies and that they should also start recruiting new members.

He said MMD still remains an independent party despite being in a working relationship with the PF.

He said those coming with lies that the party has been swallowed by other political parties should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve because the MMD is a national institution hence is not shot of leaders.

And Provincial Chairperson Gorge Kangwa said there was need for the party to embark on party elections in the lower organs of the party up to the provincial executive and a card renewal exercise to ascertain who is still with the party.

He said having elections will ensure that new blood is brought on board and ensure a robust reorganisation of the party.

The National Executive Committee members visiting the province include Chairperson for Women Maggie Musonda, National Youth Chairperson Dauzen Tembo, Chairperson for Education Henry Mulenga and Mary Phiri who is the Chairperson for Tourism.

The team had a meeting in Serenje District before proceeding to Mkushi District were they had a similar meeting.

The World Health Organization says the Cholera outbreak that has killed 15 people and made 547 sick in Lusaka and the rising caseload is expected to grow further as the rainy season starts.

And the UN body has advised against any restriction to travel to and trade with Zambia based on the information available on the current outbreak.

The Cholera outbreak began on September 28 but appeared to die down by October 20, with fewer than five patients reported weekly until November 5.

But then the number of cases surged, with 136 in the week beginning November 26.

WHO said in a statement that the main affected areas are the densely populated districts of Lusaka, Chipata and Kanyama, where poor sanitation may favor the spread of the disease.

“The coming of the rainy season, coupled with inadequate water supply and sanitation, increases the risk of outbreaks in Lusaka and other parts of the country,” WHO said.
There is also a high risk of disease outbreaks in Zambia’s Nchelenge refugee camp, which is more than 1,000 km from Lusaka, and holds more than 60,000 refugees, mainly from Democratic Republic of Congo, which is also suffering a cholera outbreak.

It said one third of the cases are children under five years old and two thirds are persons five years and older.

The UN body said it is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and other partners to control the outbreak.

“Five Cholera Treatment Centres have been established in Chawama, Chipata, Kanyama, Matero and Bauleni sub-districts to manage cases. So far, 441 cases were successfully treated and discharged. Cholera Outbreak Guidelines and standard operating procedures have been updated and shared with health workers. The facilities in Lusaka District have continued with active surveillance, health education, chlorine distribution, contact tracing and environmental health monitoring,” it said.

The WHO has since recommended proper and timely case management in Cholera Treatment Centres.

“Improving access to potable water and sanitation infrastructure, and improved hygiene and food safety practices in affected communities, are the most effective means of controlling cholera. Use of oral cholera vaccine may also be used for outbreak control. Key public health communication messages should be provided,” it said.

Cholera is spread by ingesting fecal matter and causes acute watery diarrhea.

Although most sufferers have no symptoms or mild symptoms that can be treated with oral rehydration solution, the disease spreads rapidly and can kill within hours if not treated.

THE Bank of Zambia (BoZ) is engaging the banking sector on the need to reduce the cost being charged on banking services to attract more people into being part of the banked, deputy governor – operations, Bwalya Ngandu has said.

Dr. Ngandu said there is need for banks to understand that when they charge less on banking products they will attract volumes which will then translate into increased income.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Nation, Dr. Ngandu said the central bank had received numerous complaints on the costs attached to banking in Zambia, adding that this has become a source of concern.

“We are having discussions with the banks concerning the pricing of various products because people are complaining that fees are too high and that is an issue on which we are engaging the banking sector to ensure that the cost of services and products are within range as this will encourage more people to use the banking service,” Dr. Ng’andu said.

He noted that receiving complaints from the business community was a sign that there was need for engagement between the central bank and the banks operating in the country.

Dr. Ng’andu said there is more that needs to be done by the banking sector to ensure that more players are attracted into banking.

By the year 2015 records were showing that, 86 percent of Zambians do not have bank accounts, and that these individuals are aged above 10 years. This largely explains the rhetoric that a majority of Zambians are not banked.

Financing tops list of challenges for Zambian small and medium-sized businesses

The Zambia Development Agency has said that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital to creating jobs in Zambia and ensuring economic growth. Based on various studies, The World Bank estimates as much as eighty percent of Zambia’s private sector business comprises of SMEs, employing seventy-six percent of the country’s labour force.

Yet, these same SMEs have stated that access to affordable financing remains one of the biggest challenges in trying to expand their business. Sage South Africa unveiled similar findings in their own study, suggesting the challenges are similar for SMEs across Africa.

However, the problem of financing is not wholly attributable to government or private industry. Banks have long offered opportunities for SMEs to take advantage of free business advice, or even pitch to investors, including the “SME Catalyst for Growth Programme” offered by J.P. Morgan in partnership with Cadiz Asset Management.

“Governments, over the years, have used interest rate subsidies, directed lending, guarantee funds and a variety of other approaches to fuel the financing needs of the SME sector but all to no avail,” said the authors of an African SME financing study.

While government and banking entities should do more to ensure these opportunities are more widely known, Sage’s study also reveals that owners can work towards resolving their challenges by better utilising modern best-practice techniques and technologies to manage their time more efficiently, delegate workload, and improve customer engagement.

“Use technology! Digital tools can save a lot of time, some are free, some you have to pay for, but it’s worth a small outlay upfront so that you get those few extra hours a month to spend on money-making activities,” advise Sage, making reference to the rise in easy-to-use, smart applications which can help owners from automating their admin to producing social media adverts.

The recent trend in artificial intelligence has enabled entrepreneurs to tackle a number of these business challenges. Late payments and cash flow problems remain a common problem for African SMEs, yet, invoice-management software, like Tipalti, not only reduces the administration owners need to complete, but automatically invoices clients, meaning payments are made in a timelier manner.

While there is a wealth of free information online for owners to ensure they are utilising the latest methodologies and technologies to optimise business management and growth, African SMEs are placing themselves at a disadvantage by failing to expand their teams.

Seed Academy reported that the majority of African SMEs are sole entrepreneurships. Sage advise that, by hiring employees or a virtual assistant, it is easier for owners to delegate responsibilities to others. Not only does this reduce owner workload, but it means they can more easily stay on top of the latest industry news and tools necessary for ensuring continued growth.

With Zambia currently below its target of six percent GDP growth by 2020, it is essential SME leaders educate themselves with current trends, so they can continue to maximise their growth.

In the Kitchen with Kanta: Roasted Lamb

1

In-The-Kitchen-With-Kanta-Logo (1)

The countdown for Christmas begins, so join me as I share some of my favourite Christmas recipes. First this week is roasted Lamb.

Ingredients

  • 1 leg of lamb
  • 3 heaped tsps powdered garlic
  • 3 tsps Paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste
  • ½ garlic bulb
  • ½ bunch rosemary
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 carrots, cut into large chunks
  • 1onion, cut into quarters
  • 1.2l beef or lamb stock

Method

Season the leg of lamb with garlic powder, paprika salt and pepper; making sure to rub the seasoning in well. For best results do this in advance, and cover the lamb with cling film and leave in the refrigerator overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hr before roasting.

Heat the oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Heat a large frying pan, add a little oil and brown the lamb all over. Scatter the carrot, onion, garlic and rosemary in a large roasting tin, pour in the stock, then place the browned lamb in the tin.

Roast for about 1 hr 45 mins. Turn the lamb halfway through. When cooked, remove the lamb and allow to rest in a warm place covered in foil for about 30 mins.

While the lamb is resting, make the gravy. Pour all the stock from the tin into a saucepan. This stock should be rich, slightly thick and have a great lamb flavour, keep it on the cooker for a bit longer if you wish to thicken it more.

Serving

Serve the lamb with the gravy, potatoes and extra vegetables if you would like e.g. Brussel sprouts, parsnips etc.

Chambeshi Farmers worried with delayed payment for supplied maize

4

Chambeshi Farmers in Kasama district have expressed worry over the continued delay by Jedo Trading Limited to pay them for the maize they supplied to the company during this year’s marketing season.

Group Representative John Babyo told ZANIS in Kasama that the continued delay by Jedo to pay them has hindered them from planting their crops this farming season.

Mr. Babyo said according to the agreement, the money was supposed  to have been paid in full by October this year, but that the company has been releasing money in installments making it difficult for them to plan ahead.

He added that if monies are not released on time, farmers of Chambeshi
and surrounding areas are likely to face hunger next year.
Mr. Babyo has since called on government to intervene in the matter so as to help them get their dues.

But when contacted for comment, Jedo Trading Limited General Manager Muleza Chilembo said they have disbursed over K42, 000 out of the K72, 000 they owe Chambeshi farmers.

Mr. Chilembo also added that the company has also paid farmers in Mungwi and Mbala districts.

He said the company has made arrangements to settle the remaining 60 percent of the total amount within the course of next week.

The Zambian Mission in Turkey has partnered with Turkey Travel Agencies Association (TURSAB) to raise the bar of Zambia’s profile as a tourism destination of choice.

Charge d’ Affaires of Zambia in Turkey Bwalya Nondo said the mission has lined up tourism promotion events in Turkey’s key cities of Istanbul, Antalya and Izmir.

Mr. Nondo added that government’s rates tourism highly as an engine for economic growth hence, the need to turn the sector into a wealth spinner for the nation.

He said that during the promotions, the mission will make presentations and show videos depicting Zambia’s tourism attractions.

Mr. Nondo was confident that tourist inflows into Zambia from Turkey and the surrounding regions would increase sharply given Zambia’s indisputable tourism gem coupled with political stability and peace.

He said Zambian mission would take advantage of the tourism promotion events to reiterate the need for a direct flight by Turkish Airlines between Zambia and Turkey as this was a key catalyst to promotion of tourism

This is contained in a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today by First Secretary at the Zambian Embassy in Turkey, Jerry Munthali.

Kambwili condemns PF Copperbelt WhatsApp Admin Workshop

35

Roan PF Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili has condemned the ruling PF for holding a workshop for its Copperbelt based WhatsApp group administrators.

Mr Kambwili said what is of great concern at this meeting held is that, resources which would have been effectively channeled towards student allowances at the Copperbelt University were being used to brand water with Edgar Lungu’s image.

He said all these resources were done for a meeting which lasted only a few hours.

“Why are we silent as the government wastes resources on “branding water” and yet Copperbelt University Students are not paid their meal allowances and when they demand for it, they are beaten and kept in cells,” he said.

Edgar Lungu branded water bottle during the workshop

Mr Kambwili said it is unfortunate that some Government officials were holding a WhatsApp workshop a few days after the unfortunate student brutality at CBU.

“Dear Zambians, I urge you, don’t be silent on this issue, it is not right that students can be assaulted in such a manner and yet the Government is silent about it. Ask yourself, if they turn a blind eye to issues affecting our Education system, our children; the ambassadors who are pursuing greatness and preparing to develop our beloved country, then where is their attention focused?”

He said “in such situations, I am reminded of Desmond Tutu’s words” If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

“Fellow parents, aunts, uncles, brothers and Sisters, stand up against such Injustice treatment especially in a government where there is clear evidence of misappropriation of funds. I speak out because I refuse to be neutral in situations of injustice, and I invite you all to join me, for the development of our nation, Zambia.”
