Luanshya Man Hacked to Death by Girlfriend

26

A 52-year-old man has been hacked to death by his 22-year-old girlfriend in Luanshya.

Police have since arrested the woman of Mpatamato Township for murder. She is alleged to hacked the man with a hoe on Christmas day.

Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Charity Katanga identified the suspect as Bwalya Komakoma of house number 310 section 21, and the deceased as Stephen Mulenga, 52, of Mpatamato township.

ZANIS reports that the incident happened between 03:00 and 05:00 hours when the deceased went to visit Komakoma at her house where she was with another man.

Ms. Katanga said it was then that Ms Bwalya together with her other boyfriend only identified as Kalela attacked the deceased, beating him up and hacking him with a hoe.

She explained that the deceased sustained multiple head injuries and was rushed to Roan General Hospital where he was hospitalised and later died in the early hours of Tuesday.

Ms, Katanga said Ms Bwalya, who was initially charged with unlawful wounding, was later charged with murder and will appear in court soon.

She however said police were still searching for Kalela in connection with the murder.

Government says it has this year spent about $480 million to import power to cushion the power deficit that country has been experiencing.

Minister of Energy David Mabumba says the ministry is however taking necessary steps to ensure that the country’s power deficit is addressed.

The minister noted that Zambia and Zimbabwe plans to set up a common dam on the Batoka gorge and also construct separate power plants that are expected to generate 1200 megawatts each at a cost of about 3.6 billion kwacha through debt financing.

He added that the ministry also plans to indentify the four potential sites on the Luapula river basin which have potential to generate 1000 megawatts.

The minister said the Development Bank of Southern Africa has provided a grant worth 6 million dollars to undertake feasibility studies on the Luapula river basin.

He further said that the ministry of energy will also ensure that the transmission lines are worked on to enhance interconnector corridors.

The minister was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka.

And Mr Mabumba also noted that the government will allow the private sector to procure petroleum products with the aim to empower them.

He said the ministry will next year begin a gradual process to build capacity in the private sector to enable them procure petroleum products.

Mr Mabumba added that the government is not selling ZESCO, INDENI or TAZAMA but will seek to improve their efficiency and effectiveness.

KCM releases $4.5 million for labour contractors

6

KCMKonkola Copper Mines has released 4.5 million US dollars for labour based contractors.

KCM Chief Financial Officer Sharad Gargiya says the payment is for a few contractors while suppliers will be paid next month.

Mr. Gargiya says all the contractors and suppliers will be paid by the end of January, 2017.

And Minister of Mines Christopher Yaluma has warned KCM that he will revoke its operating license if it does not fulfil its promise to pay all the contractors and suppliers by the end of January.

Mr Yaluma says he has been briefed about the KCM financial challenges and he understands what the company is going through.

And one of the contractors Blackwell Siwale said the 4.5 million US dollars released by KCM is a step in the right direction.

Mr Siwale said KCM should finish paying all contractors as promised in order for them to sustain their businesses.

On Friday, hundreds of contractors and their employees protested and blocked the entrance to the KCM General offices in Chingola demanding payments.

This forced the contractors, KCM management and the Ministers of Mines and Labour to hold a six hour closed door meeting in which the KCM Chief announced that contractors would be paid by Tuesday.

MMD has higher chance of offering checks and balances from inside

10

Raphael Nakacinda
Raphael Nakacinda
MMD National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda has advised the media to stop pushing politician into what he termed as the battle for power.

And Mr Nakacinda says the duty to prepare the MMD President for the presidency is the responsibility of his Party, the MMD and not any other Party.

Speaking when he featured on Muvi TV’s the Assignment Program Mr Nakacinda observed that there is a tendency by the media to push politicians into power play and that it is detrimental to the development of the country.

He said there is no need for politicians to continue fighting after elections because time for campaigns ends the day before the elections day and that offering checks and balances does not mean being confrontational.

He explained that it has become common for the media to interrogate sources from a dramatic point of view as opposed to what is in the interest of the Zambian people.

He also added that MMD was better placed to offer checks and balances to the PF government because they are able to sit down and advise each other.

“…a person who talks from outside and attempting to influence what is inside and a person who is actually on the table and saying we can’t do this but I think we can attempt to do it this way, because I think it will benefit the Zambian people, who has a higher chance of succeeding? He who is in Cabinet or he who is at the High Court trying to petition the elections results which will never happen. As MMD we are better placed to offer checks and balances and contribute to bettering the lives of the Zambian people.

“….I want to advise you the media to stop pushing us politicians into this power play and battle for power because this is what is making us fight. It is not about how I feel but what impact something has on the Zambian people,” he said.

When quizzed if it is indeed the media making politicians fight, Mr Nakacinda said “it is the way the media goes about their Interviews and interrogations, you conduct interviews from a dramatic point of view, it should not be about me but the Zambian people.”

And on assertions that the MMD had taken over the PF and that their President Felix Mutati was being prepared for the presidency in 2021 Mr Nakacinda said it is the duty of the MMD to prepare their President for anything and not the PF.

He said his party is in an alliance with the PF but that it is an independent party with its own program of rebuilding after what it went through in the past five years.

He further said those former MMD members being seen to have swallowed the PF are members of the PF who defected to them and were accepted by the ruling party hence should be considered as such because they are no longer MMD members.

He also said it is not in the best interest of neither the PF nor the MMD to destroy each other because it detrimental to not only the two parties but the nation at large as both parties have a role to play in the development of the country.

Asked if there is any reconciliation plan with former Party President Nevers Mumba, Mr Nakacinda said he had reached out to his former President but that he has not answered to any of his invitation for reconciliation.

He said the MMD was open to welcoming any of its former members but that the Party will not allow anyone with negative energies to come and derail the process of rebuilding the Party.

KCM has to pay contractors and suppliers in full-Yaluma

Minister Yaluma making his presentation at the Country Case Study on Zambia session at the 2016 Mining Conference in Cape Town on 10th February.
Minister Yaluma
Minister of Mines Christopher Yaluma has warned Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) that he will not allow the firm to pay contractors and suppliers in installments.

This is because the firm last week pledged to pay the 200 million dollars debt in full by yesterday.

Speaking when he met contractors in Chingola on Tuesday, Mr Yaluma said it is wrong for the mining giant to think of issuing partial payments when contractors have been waiting for their money for months.

He said he is back in Chingola as promised on Friday last week to ensure that all contractors and suppliers who are owed are paid by Tuesday.

He has warned that if KCM does not serve the interests of the nation, the mining giant may lose its operating licence.

And one of the contractors Blackwell Siwale has revealed that no contractors have been paid today as promised by KCM.

Mr Siwale revealed that the KCM process of payment to contractors takes a minimum of five days and it is not possible that the contractors will receive their money this week.

On Friday, hundreds of contractors and their employees protested and blocked the entrance to the KCM General offices in Chingola demanding payment.

This forced the contractors, KCM management and the Ministers of Mines and Labour to hold a six hour closed door meeting in which KCM Chief Financial Officer Sharad Gargiya announced that contractors would be paid by yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Mines is this afternoon expected to meet KCM management to find out why contractors and suppliers have not been paid.

Mpombo’s Son to be put under Detention for at least 10 years for the charge of murder

50

Ndola High Court Judge-in-charge Emelia Sunkutu has recommended that former Defence minister George Mpombo’s 17 year old son be detained under the President’s pleasure for at least 10 years in a charge of murder.

And Judge Sunkutu has send the juvenile to 12 months at Katombola reformatory school.

Passing judgement in a matter where Mpombo’s 17 year old son is facing two counts of murder and attempted robbery contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

In the first count the Juvenile offender is alleged to have on January 11, in Ndola, murdered his girlfriend Ruth Phiri.

In count two, it is alleged that the juvenile on January 16, armed with a firearm, attempted to rob Lewis Mpundu of his property.

Mpombo’s son is alleged to have stolen his fathers nine-millimetre pistol, which he used to kill his pregnant girlfriend before beheading her.

Last week Judge Sunkutu said she could not pass the sanctions without a social welfare report.

Senior probations officer Chrissy Hilweele recommended that the juvenile be taken to Katombola to reform.

“The juvenile needs institutional care for him to be safe. He needs physical care. Let the juvenile be taken to the reformatory school for him to reform. Removing him from society is the only way he will reform,” Hilweele said.

But Judge Sunkutu said sending the juvenile to Katombola reformatory school will be a de-service to the offender and society.

“Sending you to Katombola will be a de-service to you and society. Therefore, I order to the offence of murder to be detained at the President’s pleasure. I will submit a report to the President and the recommendations from the social welfare. The court shall send you to the President’s pleasure for a period that will be suitable for your detention. You should be confined for at least 10 years,” Judge Sunkutu said.

“On attempted aggravated robbery, am sending you to Katombola for a period of 12 months. So you will go for 12 months at reformatory school. For the murder, like I have said I recommend to be detained at the President’s pleasure for at least 10 years.”

Bwalya accuses Tonga Chiefs of stopping farmers from growing maize to create food crisis

65

The ruling PF has launched a sensational attack on some Chiefs from the Southern Province over reports that they are discouraging farmers in their areas from planting Maize.

PF Deputy Spokesperson Frank Bwalya said the party has verified reports from Southern Province that some Chiefs and Headmen and women are telling peasant farmers not to collect and plant seed distributed by Government saying that the government was late in delivering the inputs.

Mr Bwalya claimed that the traditional leaders are misleading unsuspecting farmers that it is too late to plant hence they should not collect the inputs.

He said two chiefs and one headwoman have been quoted saying disparaging remarks against the leadership of President Edgar Lungu and accusing him of knowing nothing about agriculture hence the delay in delivering farming inputs.

“Therefore, we strongly believe that the traditional leaders who are discouraging peasant farmers in Southern province from planting on grounds that it is late are not only compromising food security but endangering national security as well,” Mr Bwalya said.

He added, “Last year the rains started late and then disappeared creating a drought that caused the destruction of crops mainly maize in Eastern province and other parts of our country. After 15th January 2015 rains drastically improved and farmers were advised to replant.”

“Many farmers replanted and the result is known to everyone namely the bumper harvest mainly of maize that we recorded even in areas where farmers had to plant late. It is therefore strange that a chief or headman or woman can discourage poor peasant farmers from collecting seed provided by GRZ under FISP arguing that it would be a waste of time because the inputs arrived late.”

He said every Zambian should be afraid that if the farmers in Southern province, mainly peasant farmers listen to these powerful traditional leaders and decide not to plant there will be hunger in the area which produces a lot of maize when the weather is good.

“Should that happen, the same traditional leaders will turn round and convince the people that the cause of hunger in their area is the PF. Against this background, we believe that what these traditional leaders are doing is unacceptable. It is a recipe for hunger and associated suffering,” Mr Bwalya said.

He said the PF is investigating the real motive for the action of these traditional leaders whom he said are clearly trying to create a national food crisis.

Mr Bwalya added, “Our government has a responsibility to feed our people in the case of hunger. This is the rationale behind the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) buying crops such as rice and maize for strategic reserves. However, it is an act of sabotage to cause hunger by discouraging peasant farmers from planting.”

“We are passionately appealing to the culprits to stop discouraging farmers from collecting their seed and going ahead to plant. We are also appealing to other traditional leaders in Southern province to rise to the occasion and stop the trend.”

Nawakwi is the sole FDD funder, Removing her would derail the party

57

FDD Presidential Candidate Edith Nawakwi
Edith Nawakwi
Edith Nawakwi is the sole funder of the Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Party for which she is President and any attempt to remove her will derail the party former FDD chairperson for energy Yotam Mtayachalo has observed.

Mr Mtayachalo said that most of the finances of the FDD had been coming from the party president Ms Nawakwi and that the party would stumble financially without her support.

He disclosed in an interview with Daily Nation that if Ms Nawakwi was not given another mandate the party would struggle to find its financial ground through another leader.

Mr Mtayachalo however said that individual members of the party also had been contributing to the party in whatever small way but that Ms Nawakwi was the soul funder.

“Ms Nawakwi like many other party presidents has been the soul funder of the party. So without her the party will struggle to find it ground through another leader. We all have been contributing to the party in whatever small way, I funded the most party of my campaign in the last elections” he said.

Mr Mtayachalo reiterated that there was need for the party to be self-sufficient and that it should not be dependent on any one person.

He advised that the party should have its own sources of income and maybe venture into business to sustain its operations.

Mr Mtayachalo also said that individual members of the party should be able to contribute financially to the party in whatever small way they could.

Meanwhile, FDD national secretary Nathan Mulonga said that Ms Nawakwi was still illegible to contest the party elections at the convention.

Mr Mulonga said that the party was not aware of any court judgement prohibiting Ms Nawakwi of contesting the party elections for a third term.

He said that there was no need to question how Ms Nawakwi had been supporting the party because she had done a lot for the party.

Mr Mulonga reiterated that aggrieved members of the party should not be rushing to the courts but seek an audience with the party leadership.

He said that all members were free to contest the party elections at the convention which he said would be held soon.

Kakoma says banning the wearing of political party regalia at court is a violation of individual rights

27

Charles Kakoma
Charles Kakoma
GOVERNMENT’S decision to ban the wearing of political party regalia at court is a violation of individual rights, UPND spokesman Charles Kakoma has said.

The ban, he said, was an infringement of human rights because people had a right to wear whatever they wished at any particular event, adding that no one should decide for the people what to wear without being harassed.

Last week Minister of Justice Given Lubinda announced a ban on wearing of party regalia at court premises to eliminate confrontation and political violence.

Mr. Kakoma said the ban was uncalled for.

But Green Party president Peter Sinkamba said he was in support of Justice’s Ministers decision to ban cadres from all political parties from wearing party regalia at court premises because the materials made cadres behave in an uncivilized manner.

Mr Sinkamba said that there was also need for political leaders to minimize the number of supporters to courts as it was easier to control a small crowd than a large group.

“Even before the elections were held several meetings suggesting that cadres should be banned from wearing their party regalia as it was discovered that the wearing of the regalia was one of the cause of political violence’’, Mr Sinkamba has said.

And Gallant Youth in Zambia executive director Henry Mulenga said the banning of wearing party regalia at the Court premises had come as a measure to curb political hooliganism that wanted to dent the image of the country’s judiciary system.

Mr Mulenga said it was a shame that some political parties wanted to use force in trying to satisfy their personal agenda, saying turning the court ground into a battle field was unacceptable.

He said politicians should instill discipline to their members and use other avenues if they wanted to address their grievances, saying recent unnecessary attack on the judiciary by the UPND should not be tolerated.

Mr Mulenga thanked the Government through the Zambia Police service and the Minister of Justice for their timely interception for it was their duty to ensure that law and order was upheld. Mr Mulenga said the judicial independence should be respected by all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliation, adding that no single political party should have monopoly over national events, saying all the public institutions deserved respect.

“Time and again we have cautioned our political cadres to restrain themselves before violence accelerate to levels of even disrespecting the autonomy of honourable courts of law.

If we cannot wait for the courts to adjudicate on matters of law with a free will, then that indicates failed leadership or that those agitating violence have no alternatives to provide credible checks and balances thereby resorting to physical confrontation,” he said.

Mr Mulenga urged youths not to accept being used as political tools of violence by selfish individuals. Meanwhile, MMD National Secretary Raphael Nakacinda said stopping people from wearing political party regalia was not a solution to ending political violence.

Mr Nakacinda said government should not be scared to sanction unruly cadres who behave in uncivilized manner.

“Government should not be skeptical around the issue the issue because the law is very clear on the sanction against such behaviour,” said Mr Nakacinda.

And People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti was against the ban because it was not a solution as regalia were not a tool for causing violence.

Earlier Minister of Justice Given Lubinda banned the wearing of political regalia at court premises following the fracas that happened a fortnight ago when police were forced to fire tear gas canisters at the unruly UPND cadres who were protesting the adjournment of the election petition by their leaders Hakainde Hichilema and his vice Geoffrey Mwamba.

Mr. Lubinda said the ban which applied to all political party cadres would will help de-politicize the dispensation of justice.

identified the woman as Florence Chitalu.

Mr. Namachila said Chitalu stabbed the husband, Gideon Chanda, 51 with the

lambasted her for accruing unnecessary debts without his approval.

ZANIS reports that the Police Commissioner said Chanda was immediately
rushed at Mufwaya clinic in the same area where he was pronounced dead upon
arrival.

He said the body of the deceased is lying in Kawambwa Hospital mortuary
awaiting postmortem while the accused who is also breastfeeding a one and
half year old baby is in police custody and will soon appear in court for
murder.

And the Luapula province Police Chief has also confirmed the suicide case
of a 17 year old boy of Muyembe village in Chief Munkanta’s area.

He named the boy as Bobo Chama who committed suicide on December 25th by
hanging himself in a mango tree at the neighbour’s house using the shoelace.

Mr. Namachila said police did not suspect any foul play and allowed the
family to bury the body on the same day.

In another development,  atwenty six –year old man of Chipata District has also died after hanging himself as he was celebrating Christmas.

Chief Chanje of the Chewa people said on Monday that Luckson Soko of Bonzo village is believed to have hanged himself after picking up a quarrel with his relatives as he was celebrating Christmas.

ZESCO lit up 174 grass thatched homes in Chipata villages

18

Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO )Limited has connected 174 grass thatched houses to power at Luangeni Village in Chipata District in Eastern Province.

The project of connecting power to grass thatched is earmarking to benefit 361 houses at a cost of K1.6 million.

Both Luangeni Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Zulu and ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata disclosed on Monday that the project was meant to reach out to the low-income communities.

Mr Kapata said he was happy that the project was going on well adding that out of 361 grass thatched houses earmarked for connection at the village, 174 have already been connected since the project started.

He explained that the project had also seen the connection of power to nine schools in Luangeni.

Mr Kapata said the project which was also being implemented in Mwansabombwe would be an ongoing for the benefit of the low income community.

“So far we have connected power to 174 grass thatched houses at Luangeni village out of 361 earmarked for the project. This is at a cost of K1.6 million and we have also connected power to nine primary schools which includes Nthombimbi,”he said.

The ZESCO spokesperson has also dispelled  fears that there was no effect in the connection of power to grass thatched houses.

He said ZESCO was installing earthling cables to the houses benefiting from the project as well as other appliances which could determine the short circuit.

Mr Kapata said beneficiaries were happy that the project of such magnitude was being implemented.

And Mr Zulu who is former Energy Deputy Minister expressed happiness with the project.

He said the Patriotic Front (PF) Government was accelerating the provision of electricity to all households.
Mr Zulu also pledged that he would work hard to ensure that developments were executed in Luangeni constituency.

Hakainde should have apologised to Chief Justice, JCC over cadres ‘protest

41

Outspoken president the newly formed Economic and Equity Party (EEP)  Chilufy Tayali says opposition UPND President Hakainde Hichilema should have written a latter of apology to the Chief Justice and the Judicial Complaints Commission (JCC)  as opposed to complaining about Judge Chitabo.

Mr Tayali observed that it is the duty of Mr Hichilema to take responsibility for the actions of the cadres at the Lusaka High Court.

He further castigated Mr Hichilema for his failure to recognise the need for an apology.

He also called on the Chief Justice and JCC to ignore Mr Hichilema’s letter and concentrate “more important matters.”

“I, therefore, think that the letters by HH to the Chief Justice and the Judicial Complaint Commission against Judge Chitabo are in bad faith and failure to accept the mistakes by the UPND in keeping law and order.

“If HH was a responsible leader, he should have written an apology letter to the Chief Justice and Judge Chitabo (through HH’s lawyers) for the fracas  at the High Court. But, no, HH and the UPND are never wrong, it is Judge Chitabo who needs to be disciplined and not HH and his cadres.

He urged the  Chief Justice and the JCC  to ignore Mr Hakainde’s letter  so that theyccould concentrate on other things more important and If anything, they should ask Hakainde to apologise and repair the damages on the Courts properties.

He said political parties should stop revolting when a judge rules against them as judges dispense justice in their wisdom.

“Of course others are compromised but Judge Chitabo has been very fair otherwise the UPND would have closed this case when the Attorney General applied that the case be be thrown out. They celebrated when Judge Chitabo ruled that the case should be heard, now they are throwing stones at the same Judge that he should recuse himself, just because he is trying to prevent anarchy,” he said.

Four children perish as house collapses on them in Siavonga

9

Four children of the same family have died when the house they were sleeping in collapsed as a result of heavy rain in Kanyelele compound in Siavonga District in Southern Province.

And two more houses have collapsed in the same compound and one person has been injured.

Siavonga District Commissioner (DC) and Siavonga Member of Parliament (MP) confirmed the Development to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) that the incident happened around zero two hours today.

Siavonga District Commissioner (DC) Lovemore Kanyama said at the scene of the incident that the wall fence from the neighbour‘s house collapsed on Mr Kenneday Chiti’s house and buried the children who were asleep.

Mr Kanyama said efforts to save the Children by the parents failed as the time they managed to remove the rubble that buried them they had already died.

The DC has since expressed sadness at the death of four children Harriet Chiti aged 12, George Chiti 15, Robson Chiti 10, and Bwalya Tembo aged seven years.

Mr Kanyama said government will ensure that the bereaved family is assisted through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

Siavonga MP Darious Mulunda has also expressed shock at the sudden death of the four Children and called for unit among the residents of Siavonga to ensure that the burden for the bereaved family is alleviated.

Mr Mulunda described the incident as unfortunate especially that the collapse of the house was as a result of the wall fence from the neighbour which fell on it.

The Bodies of the four children are lying in Siavonga district hospital.

From waste to wealth : Meet Harrison Musonda, a successful entrepreneur thanks to Manja Pamodzi

22
Meet Harrison Musonda – an entrepreneur turning waste to success

The story of Harrison Musonda is a relative rags-to-riches story with a difference: it is the rags and other household waste that are now bringing Musonda prosperity, and helping the community at the same time.
Musonda earns a living by selling litter and recyclable waste as part of the highly successful Manja Pamodzi project, a community-based initiative that has seen parts of Lusaka where the project has been launched cleared of refuse, and recycled material for cash.
Dealing in other people’s household waste has always earned the 29-year-old Musonda enough to survive, but since becoming an aggregator for the Zambian Breweries-supported Manja Pamodzi initiative, he has enjoyed a noticeable improvement in his standard of living.
His role involves buying litter in bulk from collectors so that he can then process the discarded material into bundles to be sold on to Manja Pamodzi. Thereafter; companies specialising in processing of recyclable materials buy the solid waste and turn into useable material such as tissues and egg trays.
It is difficult to believe that Musonda at one time had to survive on picking waste from the dump site; now these days are long gone.
“Before engaging with the Manja Pamodzi project, I met up with some business people who would buy plastic litter in bulk. They would give us K50 a time. Later, I realised that there is value in this waste-picking business. I started selling a kilo for 30 ngwee. I would make between K300 and K500 weekly and I started saving,” he says.
As fate may have it, in March 2014 he met with some consultants who were conducting feasibility studies on recyclable material. This was a turning point in his life as it meant he could finally move on from his Chunga dumping ground litter-picking business. In 2015, the team came back for the Manja Pamodzi project with Zambian Breweries. That was the moment when it dawned on him that becoming an aggregator was a way out of the poverty trap which he was in danger of falling into.
“I realised that I could engage others and now have about 60 collectors. I have even engaged professionals and university graduates.”
The renowned Manja Pamodzi initiative is supported by Zambian Breweries and its sister companies National Breweries and Heinrich’s Syndicate. The aim of the environmental clean-up and recycling project is to minimise litter that can block drainage system and give rise to disease such as cholera and typhoid, especially during the rainy season.
Apart from giving people a sense of worth, a spirit of hope, and a future to look forward to, the project is generating enterprise development opportunities and thus alleviating poverty. Through the initiative the communities are also being given the chance to create their own businesses.
The collectors are identified through environmental education campaigns with the emphasis on recycling. The collectors gather polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, cardboard and other recyclable materials from target areas in their communities.
Musonda says he is happy to be part of the Manja Pamodzi initiative because as far as he is concerned, it is not just about the money he raises but the contribution he and his colleagues are making towards keeping the country clean. “I have engaged about 60 people under the Manja Pamodzi project. I have been to Chawama, Ngombe and other places in Lusaka collecting recyclable litter,” he recalls.
“I have grown up in a hard situation. I was a bin scavenger. I was getting food to survive by God’s Grace. Then I started visiting the Chunga dumping site, but I was also determined to work hard and make it in life. When I look at litter, I see business: I see money.”
He does not blame his parents for his harsh and humble beginnings: “It wasn’t my parents’ fault that I was a scavenger. Being a scavenger was a tough situation but I was doing it for survival. I am happy that through my business I have built them a house. God blessed me with a car and now I can take my children to a good school,” the father-of-two says.
Musonda hopes he can inspire schoolchildren to keep their environment clean: “I also provide leadership in schools and started working with Lusaka City Council (LCC). He has some words of advice for the youth of today, and that is to value your life, be dedicated to what you are doing, set goals and achieve them.
