Zambia Police need to send a strong signal against lawlessness of inciting students and the public-Pule

The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) has urged the Zambia Police Service to be firm on people that are abrogating the law.

Party President Dan Pule said that people have continued inciting students and the public because the Police service has not sent a strong signal to them that lawlessness will not be allowed.

Bishop Pule said that he expected the police to be on high alert and prevent crimes such as student riots even before they happen, adding that the rate at which some citizens are issuing false statements is alarming and that something needs to be done about it. Bishop Pule said Zambia is a peaceful country and those who want to promote trouble should not be caged.

And a Kabwe based clergy man has urged Christians to disregard politicians who are propagating hatred against foreign nationals. Covenant of Grace Bishop Simon Banda said that it is unchristian to incite people to rise against others.

Bishop Banda told ZNBC news that if a Chinese breaks the law the due process should be allowed to take its course as opposed to some political leaders inciting Zambians to rise against them.

He challenged those condemning the Chinese to publicly state if they will not work with China if at all they ever form government.

Bishop Banda said Christians are not expected to follow political leaders that want to make the country ungovernable using violence.

Opposition APC President Nason Msoni

However, opposition All People’s Congress party president Nasson Msoni has castigated the Zambia Police for their swift response when dealing with statements from opposition political party leaders when they don’t exhibit the same levels of energy when dealing with crimes in communities.

Msoni says the Police have no business policing political statements as their job is in communities were real crimes are committed everyday.

He explained that it has become useless to call the police when under attack but that the police will react with lightening speed to deal with opposition leaders.

“There are so many violent crimes happening in our communities every day requiring police intervention and yet they don’t even bother to respond to the calls.

“Police are nowhere to be seen in many circumstances requiring their prompt action . Now it’s even worse and useless and a waste of time to call for help from Police at night when you are under attack from Criminals. Most likely they will not even turn up giving the usual silly excuses of no transport.

“In all this apparent failing surprisingly Police is responding at lightning speed to the summoning of Opposition leaders over harmless political statements. We think police have no business policing political statements made by political leaders. It is certainly bad policing antics to be snooping on Opposition leader’s statements with a view to summoning them for further clarity and interpretation,” he said.

Msoni has since called for reorientation for the Police to understand their role in a democracy.

“The need for Police orientation is imperative and a necessary process for our police officers to undergo in realising that in a democracy citizens and political activists are entitled to issue political statements that do not please the government of the day. As citizens and political leaders we demand professionalism in our police services. We reject a police service that operates in a cadre like fashion,” he said.

PF Media Director Sunday Chanda has reported lawyer Martha Mushipe to the police for allegedly circulating a message suggesting he was calling for the attack of the UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema’s House.

Mr. Chanda alleged that Ms Mushipe circulated the message in question using social media which has a huge following.

He says the message is dangerous as it may promote hate and disorder.

Mr. Chanda says he wants the police to find out from Ms Mushipe as to where she got the message that she is allegedly spreading.

He said this during the PF interactive meeting in Lusaka today.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chanda says he expects the UPND Leader to cooperate with Police when he goes for interrogation.

Mr. Chanda alleged that the youths who are being mobilised to disrupt the smooth running of the investigation will have themselves to blame.

And when contacted for a comment, Ms. Mushipe said she has no obligation to respond to ZNBC before cutting the call.

IMF team with Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe

A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which has been in the country to assess Zambia’s economic situation has concluded its mission. The team was in the country to exchange information on economic data that will facilitate the development of a macroeconomic framework for use during the Article 4 Consultations, in the first quarter of 2019.

The framework will also provide a basis for determination of any policy adjustments required going forward. Finance Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe has disclosed this in a statement to ZNBC news in Lusaka.

Mrs. Mwanakatwe said during their visit, the team engaged the ministry of finance, the Bank of Zambia, Zambia’s Cooperating Partners, and Non-State Actors. She has described the meetings with the IMF team as cordial and grounded in mutual respect.

The team comprised David Robinson – IMF Deputy Director for the African Region, Dan Ghura – IMF Mission Chief for Zambia, and other staff specialized in various sectors such as the fiscal and macroeconomic framework, monetary and financial affairs, external debt, and real sector matters.

Mrs. Mwanakatwe said Government looks forward to the coming of the IMF staff team for Article 4 Consultations in the first quarter of 2019. The IMF team which finished its mission on Friday has returned to Washington, DC, United States of America.

ZANASU welcomes restoration of student leadership at UNZA

The Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) is gratified to finally note that the University of Zambia now has a student leadership elected based on the free will and choice by students themselves. The decision by UNZA to elect the Warren Hamusanga-led Union Executive is an indictment that UNZA students will not fall for prey to candidates who use money to elect leaders or advance the ugly undertones of tribal identity.

We also want to commend Minister of Higher Education for partially abandoning her quest to replace Students Unions with the guild leadership because students Unions are the only legally recognised bodies in institutions of higher learning. Minister Luo had, on 30th June 2017, told Parliament that “I do not think our institutions should have student unions…We need to introduce guild leadership in our institutions. I will be carrying out consultations with the students, stakeholders and the churches so that Zambia moves away from unionism in our institutions of higher learning to another level of leadership already mentioned- guild leadership.”

The return to student unionism to UNZA albeit new positions that were meant for the guild heralds the fight done by both students, members of Parliament, well-meaning institutions in our society to protect the law as it stands. We also call on Government, through Minister of Higher Education, to allow student unions in other public universities such as Copperbelt University, Nkrumah University, Chalimbana University, Mulungushi University, among others.

ZANASU closely followed the UNZASU campaigns in which candidates were heavily funded, and some of whom championed tribal undertones in order to secure their election but also had positioned themselves to work in isolation of the student movement in the country, once elected into office. However, it was the decision of the students themselves at UNZA as ordinary voters that makes us believe in our fellow students at the University that money, tribal undertone and seeking to advance an agenda that causes divisions in the students movement will remain rejected by those that believe in the democratic apparatus.

Going forward, ZANASU appeals to our Minister of Education to further reconsider her position and begin to view students Unions as providing a platform for both government and students to engage in addressing challenges affecting institutions of higher learning. We believe her remarks in Parliament on 2nd November, 2017 that “..I believe the students have the right to speak to the Minister and do not have to speak through students’ unions… (as) Unions are not the only vehicle that students should use for dialogue.”

ZANASU wants our student Unions to become a vehicle for dialogue with government and other stakeholders because it is only through the Unions that students can effectively speak to authorities. Students don’t need to individually queue everyday to see their Vice Chancellor, management or indeed the Minister herself.

The ZANASU leadership will engage the newly elected student leadership at the University of Zambia, as it is doing with many others, to discuss ways of collaboration and ensure the student movement regains its position as a champion of both student and national causes.

The voting patterns in the country has changed – Justice Lisimba

6

The Commission of Enquiry into Voting Patterns and Electoral Violence has observed that it is apparent to everyone that the voting patterns in the country have changed.

Commission chairperson, Justice Munalula Lisimba, says in the recent past, the country has continued to experience regional and tribal voting patterns as well as electoral violence which he said have immensely destabilized the country’s peace and unity.

Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Central Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Felix Mang’wato today , Justice Lisimba said it is in this regard that President Edgar Lungu mandated the Commission to find out about the trend and whether there are external factors influencing the country’s voting patterns.

And Central Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Felix Mang’wato, said the province has welcomed the programme and will give the Commission the necessary support in order to ensure that the programme is successful.

Mr Mang’wato said the coming of the Commission will also help the province to carry out extensive sensitisations that will hinge on the importance of preserving the country’s peace and unity.

He advised the Commission to be at liberty to call on the Provincial Administration for support wherever possible because their program is important to the well-being of not only the province but the country as a whole.

The sittings will start with Serenje, Kabwe, Kapiri-Mposhi and Itezhi-tezhi and the programme will run from Monday, 12th November to 16th November, 2018 and that thereafter, the Commission will make recommendations to the government on the way forward.

A foreigner’s guide to dating a Zambian man

57

By Sampa Kabwela

Welcome to Zambia! In addition to the anti-malaria tablets, mosquito repellent, sunscreen lotion, A-Z vitamins, maps, a copy of Lonely Planet, GPRS, energy bars – which we all have here – I thought I should share with you insider information into our men, the Zambian man. Oh! before I forget, this guide is written with the ‘Western’ woman in mind.

While in Zambia, should you find love or plan to marry a Zambian man, here are a few things you need to know in advance. By all means, this is just a guide; there are variations to the Zambian man and your experiences on the ground might as well be the opposite, but typically this is what you must expect.

First things first, our men don’t ‘split the bill!’ The Western idea of splitting bills is not Zambian. When a Zambian man invites you for dinner, he will not add the caveat ‘it’s on me’ because, by default, it’s on him. Our men are raised to settle dinner bills! If you meet a Zambian man who stares at the bill, disappears to the bathroom or expects you to pay half (without you offering or insisting) he is either a freeloader or has picked up the habit from the diaspora. It is not that we Zambian women can’t settle the bill, far from it, it is just what it is, men pay bills here. Ditch the equality argument. Here, men pay bills in the same way that you don’t open car doors for your men. Frankly, it can be shocking for us Zambian women who find ourselves on a date with your men to be expected to half pay for dinner, we don’t do that here, but we have now assimilated.

The display of affection in public, which comes naturally with your men; kissing, touchy-touchy doesn’t come naturally with our men. You will not be kissed in public or looked into the eyes every so minute and be re-told how much you are loved. It is not that our men are not romantic, or unloving, far from it, it’s just what it is over here. Affection is expressed in privacy and in most cases behind a locked bedroom door, not even the living-room is private enough. Some men, fresh from the diaspora kiss in public; looking all laboured, stiff and contrived as if under duress. Here, us women know what we know, our men love us and they do so relentlessly and hard.

If your idea of a man is one who can cook, run his own bath and clears the table after eating; you have arrived in a wrong country in search of a wrong man. Without exception, a Zambian man does not do dishes! He doesn’t cook either unless of course, he stays alone. This birthright cuts across class, religion, ideology and ironically even the most liberal and learned of them all. Even those who wear the Western diaspora badge of honour may adopt a questionable or even convincing accent, acquire the taste for salmon and even enjoy Mozart, but dishes they do not do!

Our men are Kings! Ruling over small kingdoms, some with as few as a single subject and living in palaces as little as one room, but mighty kings nonetheless. As a wife, this is how your palace life might look like – In the morning you will prepare or run a bath for the king, and you will also un-run it. It is his irrevocable right to have clean ironed clothes at all times as it is your irrevocable duty to ensure that all his clothes are clean and ironed at all times.

The right of your Zambian man to eat is solely your duty. He is incapable of fixing himself any meal even if its just pouring cereal, sugar and milk in a bowl. The kitchen is one area of the house he has little knowledge of; it’s a foreign land, a minefield.

Forget the culture so ordinary and common where you are coming from where the kitchen is the centre of the house, a place in which your lives are lived and shared, trading the goings of the day; where even if a man can’t cook, he helps with peeling onion, cutting tomatoes, keeps you company or minds the babies.

I will be pleasantly surprised if you will find yourself among our men one who can spend more than two minutes in the kitchen at any given time. You will be a special woman if the Zambian breed of a man you will find is one who can make a meal even once a year or one who can find sugar from the kitchen without turning the entire kitchen upside down.

If our everyday experiences are anything to go by, you will cook all the meals, juggle the children, run around and do all other things. For his part, he will await his meal while face-booking, texting, watching tv, anything, but the kitchen. After eating, do not expect the simple but loaded gesture of appreciation expressed by taking one’s plate to the sink. He can’t because by doing so, risks becoming less of a man stripped of respect and masculinity.

Pregnancy; our men don’t hang around in labour wards witnessing the messy and bloody business of birth. At most, he will be outside the labour ward. It will be pretty much a normal day for him, if he is the English premier league type, he will be watching his match until he gets the phone call from the hospital. The new baby will pretty much be your business too.

I can hear you dismissing this guide arguing that the man I describe is ancient, extinct, traditional and chauvinistic. The man I describe is young, Western-educated, liberal and exposed. When it comes to power structures and male privileges in a home, our men are notoriously traditional.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says the striking clearing Agents at Mwami Border in risk being charged with Economic sabotage.

Mr. Kasolo says the strike action by the Clearing Agents on both sides of the Malawi and Zambia Mwami border is tantamount to Economic Sabotage.

ZANIS reports that Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo told the Clearing Agents at the border that government will consider revoking the operating licenses of the clearing agents if they do not immediately resume operations.

Speaking during an meeting with Clearing Agents which was also attended by ZRA Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda, Mr Kasolo government has lost millions of kwacha since Monday saying they ( the Agents ) have risked being charged with economic sabotage as the country has not only lost revenue .

“ K4.3 million worth of exports and K3.5 million imports have been marooned since Monday . The move by the agents is tantamount to economic blackmail hence they have risked the relationship between Malawi and Zambia, “ he said.

The visibly annoyed Mr Kasolo who did not allow the clearing agents to speak said the agents have also risked the security of the nation and relationship between Zambia and Malawi.

Mr Kasolo suspects that the clearing agents have hidden motives as they are not only demanding the removal of the station manager but also want his predecessor who is currently on suspension to be reinstated.

And ZRA commissioner General Kingsley has warned the clearing agents that they will be blacklisted if they do not resume work by the end of the day.

He stated that their businesses that will not submit the entries will have their license revoked saying there is damaging to Zambia’s export market.

He states that the transporters have lost money as they need to move in order to make money and not by sitting at the border.

Since last Monday clearing agents downed tools demanding the immediate removal of Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) station manager, Vincent Ngulube.

The move has seen over 200 trucks have been marooned at Mwami border as a result .

Zambia Police

POLICE in Mumbwa working with two Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are holding a couple for having canal knowledge with its two biological daughters in an attempt to get rich faster.

The Police Victim Support Unity in conjunction with Mumbwa Child Development Agency and World Vision picked up a 36 years father and 33 years mother of Village Bwantu in Chief Mulendema whose identity have been withheld yesterday for having sex with its first born and second aged 18 and 15 respectively from 2013 to 2017.

Police sources said that the act was being consented by the mother and in 2015 the eldest was impregnated by his biological father but the pregnancy was terminated by the mother using traditional charms.

The source explained that after the first born got married, the biological father switched on to the second born daughter who has now attained the age of 15 until some members of the public reported the matter to Mumbwa Child Protection committee.

Police have charged the father with incest while the mother is still being investigated and they are both in police custody waiting to appear in court.

And Mumbwa Child Development Agency Manager Grecious Nkeete says it is unfortunately that the abusers of the girl children are coming from their households were they have grown from.

Mrs. Nkeete appeals to law enforcers to expedite the court processes so that the abusers are punished and send warning to other would be offender.

World Vision Mumbwa Child Protection Officer George Siame says her organization will continue to support the fight against early child marriages and other sexual abuses until the numbers are brought to zero.

Mr. Siame appealed to other well-wishers to help construct a safe house within the district where the abused girls can be kept.

HH is a crook with a malicious agenda to frustrate government efforts-Former IG

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in Chilanga Compaigning with UPND candidate Ms Musonda
FILE: UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in Chilanga Compaigning with UPND candidate Ms Musonda

Former Inspector General of Police Dr. Martin Malama has said that United Party for National Development UPND President Hakainde Hichilema is a crook with a malicious agenda to frustrate government efforts.

Dr. Malama, who is also Kanchibiya Member of Parliament, has called on the Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) to censure and strip Hichilema off his practice as an Economist for subjecting the name of the organisation to continuous ridicule through a series of lies and recklessness statements such as his Sun Fm malicious propaganda suggesting the sale of ZAFFICO to Chinese nationals.

Speaking when he addressed the residents of Kanengo Village in Pambashe constituency and in the company of its area member of Parliament yesterday, Hon Malama said he was extremely tempted to call out the UPND President for who he truly is, ‘a Mambala’, except it was Sabbath and he would therefore try as much as possible to resist the temptation.

Meanwhile, Pambashe lawmaker Hon Ronald Chitotela has said that the only reason as to why Zambians are being incited to disapprove of the Chinese was because Chinese investors are helping the ruling party under President Edgar Lungu to realise and achieve its election promises

Mr Chitotela reiterated that the UPND’s major setback and frustration against the Chinese is that by 2021, the opposition party will have nothing to use as a de-campaigning tool against the Patriotic Front.

Upon being repossessed, Kawambwa Tea was then handed over to be managed by ZAFFICO! Now tell me, how exactly will President Lungu successfully repossess those companies and industries previously sold by the likes of Hichilema, hand them back to Zambian, then today be accused of trying to resale the same companies.

“To emphasise on what Hon Malama has stated, we in Pambashe have not forgotten that when Hichilema auctioned Kawambwa Tea Estate which was later sold to the Zimbabweans, it took this Patriotic Front government to get the company back into the hands of Zambians.

“Upon being repossessed, Kawambwa Tea was then handed over to be managed by ZAFFICO! Now tell me, how exactly will President Lungu successfully repossess those companies and industries previously sold by the likes of Hichilema, hand them back to Zambian, then today be accused of trying to resale the same companies.

“ZAFFICO has not been sold to any Chinese. They are inciting Zambians to rise up against the Chinese because the Chinese are hardworking. They are frustrated because they have realised that our partnership with China will leave them with nothing to use as a tool to de-campaign the leadership of President Lungu in 2021,” said Hon Chitotela who spoke in Bemba.

The Pambashe lawmaker was in his constituency to receive the last crop of defectors from the UPND before proceeding to drum up support for the Lupososhi Council Chairperson PF Candidate John Clement Kwandangala Kaputula.

The newly created district in Northern province will go to the polls to elect its first Council Chairperson in a by-election slated for November 20, 2018.

It’s time for the Opposition to join forces and fight tyranny-Kambwili

Chishimba Kambwili.
Chishimba Kambwili.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on other opposition political parties to rise and join hands against the proliferation of tyranny and dictatorship in Zambia.

NDC consultant Chishimba Kambwili says it is high time that the opposition said no to such kind of governance in the Country.

Mr. Kambwili, who is also Roan Member of Parliament, is appealing to opposition political parties to, from now on, work together in ensuring that Democracy thrives in Zambia.

In an interview with Q-News by telephone Mr. Kambwili has encouraged the opposition to start by showing solidarity to UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema who has been summoned by the Police in Ndola.

Mr. Kambwili has urged all political parties who call themselves opposition to turn up on Wednesday with their supporters and give Mr. Hichilema support.

He thinks the summoning of Mr. Hichilema for questioning over the ZAFFICO riots is an alleged premeditate ploy to arrest him.

Mr. Kambwili states that this unfair treatment of innocent citizens must however not be allowed in a democratic Country like Zambia.

He says this is why he is encouraging all opposition political leaders to from now on be showing solidarity to whoever among them, is unfairly arrested.

Today’s Message: The Principle of Faithfulness

2

Today’s Scripture

“…Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”
(Matthew 25:23, NIV)

The Principle of Faithfulness

In the book of Genesis, we see that God established a system of sowing and reaping in the earth. When we are faithful with what God has placed in our hands, we position ourselves for increase. Many people pray, “God bless me!” But God is saying, “Are you being faithful with what I have given you?” Scripture tells us that when we are faithful with the little, God will make us ruler over much.

Remember, you can’t reap a harvest without first planting seeds. God has given each of us seeds to sow, so don’t hold on to them! Be faithful to give, be faithful to pray, be faithful to speak life over your future. Develop faithfulness in the small things. Develop faithfulness in your character. Be on time. Keep your word. Be dependable. As you develop faithfulness, God will see your good works, and He’ll make you ruler over much!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your promise of faithfulness to me. Make me a faithful follower of You as I seek to serve You in all I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
